Sardines and cod liver are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, but is one better for you than the other? Find out in this quick video.

0:57 Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA
1:10 Comparing sardines vs. cod liver

4:05 Learn more about the benefits of cod liver oil!
In this video, we’re going to talk about the health benefits of cod liver and sardines. Sardines are excellent for your health and a great source of omega-3s, but so is cod liver! You should consume both foods because they each have their own strengths.
Cod liver and sardines contain omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA. EPA helps reduce inflammation, while DHA supports the brain, nerves, and heart.
Sardines contain .9 to 2 grams of omega-3 fatty acids per serving while cod liver contains 9 to 11 grams per serving. Cod liver also contains significantly more vitamin D.
Sardines and cod liver contain vitamin A in its active form, retinol. Vitamin A supports vision, vision at night, and the inner mucosal membranes of your mouth, throat, sinuses, and lungs. It’s also important for your thyroid. Sardines contain 32 mcg of vitamin A, and cod liver contains 5100 mcg!
Cod liver does not surpass sardines in all aspects. Sardines are a better source of protein.
Cod liver is a rich source of folate at 300 mcg, while sardines only contain 10 mcg. Sardines contain 392 mg of calcium and 545 mg of phosphorus and cod liver contains 10 mg and 100 mg respectively.
Cod liver and sardines contain about the same amount of B12 at 10.6 mcg and 11 mcg respectively.
When comparing sardines to salmon, both fish contain B vitamins, but sardines are a better source of calcium, phosphorus, selenium, iron, magnesium, and zinc.

Thanks for watching! I hope you’ll try adding both sardines and cod liver to your diet. I’ll see you in the next video.
I like cod liver and a great recipe is: boil eggs as many as you want, a bit hard so that the yolk is firm. Cut the eggs in halves and take out the yolks. Mix the yolks with cod liver (one can to maybe four yolks) and use the spices you like. Put the yolk/cod liver mix into the egg halves where the yolks have been. Use any topping you like, or no topping.
Hope you understand this 😁 Greetings from Sweden 💖
Thanks for sharing but that's too much work for me, lol! And I never cook my yolks hard because a lot of the nutrients die. Soft boiled or poached are the standard recommendation by nutritionists.
I'm gonna try this, thanks!
Hey, thanks for sharing, will surely try it! :)
Can't go wrong with Viking recipes! :D
😘😘😘😘
Thank you! I am buying some smoked cod liver tomorrow, and will try this. In Canada, we call that "devilled eggs". You can mix different ingredients with the yolks, as well as toppings. Take care! xx :)
I'm 55. My grandmother, who raised me, was a nurse and kept a jar of Cod Liver Oil in the medicine chest. She recommended it for many ailments. This the first analysis I've ever seen about it's benefits and now I see why.
This is a major part of my dog’s diets. They’re beautiful and energetic, happy dogs.
Try raw mackerel, mine looked like they were French polished !
What about you not dogs?
Lucky dog
❤❤❤I been eating sardines for lunch. Wow, I seen these before. Great to know. Breakfast 2 raw egggs. Lunch sardines and avocado. And dinner Carne asada tacos. Thank you .. ill try them..
Sardines ❤eat everyday day n night
Awesome meals!
I found it is best to cook the egg whites and leave the yolks runny from a health standpoint.
Raw egg whites block protein.
I'd recommend trying to get down to 2 meals or 1, versus 3 different meals, which are eliminating you from getting any fasting, makes your body work more/rest less, etc.
What tortilla do you use? I am using the Almond Flour from Siete. I have tacos every Tuesday.... I am wondering if I should skip the tortilla.
I'm coming over for the tacos.
I mix Sardines in with my salads. Olive oil , hot sauce and chia seeds. Little bit of ACV. YUM!!
I have been eating sardines daily for many years. In the past year I added cod liver oil and canned cod livers as you recommended. Besides lower inflammation, it makes my skin GLOW. Thank you Dr. Berg!
What cod liver oil brand?
@@RoflJoker1994 Nordic Naturals cod liver oil (capsules) & Carlson’s cod liver oil (liquid, unflavored)
@@YasminA-jm9zs thank you
did you notice better tanning/reduced burning?
@@YasminA-jm9zs which one is best capsule or oil? I think Nordic naturals have oil also, have you tried it?
I’ve had a tin of cod liver in my cabinet for a year. After watching this video I finally wanted to try it, and I’m glad I did! It is delicious ! I will be buying more cod liver for sure…. Thankyou❤
Hi shel how r u,did u try the Cod liver
I was amazed at how delicious it is. However, I have friends who absolutely refuse to try it, because they JUST KNOW that it would taste terrible.
It's an acquired taste. If you didn't eat before, it's going to take a few tries. Go slow at first, treat it like an hors d'oeuvre- small bite size pieces of dark heavy German bread canopies
@@sandroandoes4787 I eat it with a teaspoon, about a third of a teaspoon at a time in order to savor the wonderful flavor.
...and I always toast my bread slices
Cod liver is the winner! We have beautiful cod here in the UK. You're wonderful as always, Dr Berg! Thanks for this great information ❤🎉
Where do you get it in the Uk? I can’t find canned cod liver like I can sardines, mackerel or salmon??
Love taking CLO in the winter. Dosage is 3 tablespoons/ day for 3 weeks. Then take a 3 week break. But its getting pricey here in the US. Any suggestion to save dollars and pounds?
@@NoName88837 Rarely see cod liver here in the US. But had it in Oslo regularly while visiting a friend.
and how do you eat the cod liver to mask the strong taste? I love sardines but I can't eat cod liver
I've never ever seen cod livers sold in UK. Where do you buy them?
Thank you, Dr. Berg! I didn't know you could buy canned cod liver. I ordered some immediately. More good food to add to my battle against inflammation and autoimmune issues. Your videos are life changing!
I chop up onions and coat the sardines in a touch of turmeric, fry then in olive oil slightly then garnish with coriander. Tastes amazingggg
Ohhhh mate! That sounds awesome I'm gonna try it bro!👍👌
I like sardines even though I'm not a fish-fan. In olive oil, a touch of mayo, hard-boiled egg, and some green olives. Have a lot stored up in case things get crazy. My mom used to give me cod-liver oil in a little orange juice when I was growing up. Going to add cod liver to my regimen. Thanks Dr. Berg, you're the best!
Chicken of the Sea sardines were on sale for $1 a tin and I bought 100, to have 2 tins a week for a year. I hate fish and hate sardines but I mix them with seasonings to get them down. I bought a box of Wild Planet sardines and they were so much nicer but so pricy.
@@UncleDavesKitchen Wow, that was a great buy! All the best!
I now eat both once a week but it's a new routine and thanks to your good advice in other videos. Appreciate this side by side comparison.
You're welcome. Wishing you good health!
Sardines. The ideal food to share with my dogs straight from the tin, they loved me for it.
Careful not to give them too much because of the salt content. I'm pretty sure dogs can't handle as much salt as humans, but they will not say no to it.
@@vagabondcaleb8915 Human + two dogs, I assure we did not over do it with a tin every few days, but they loved fresh mackerel too.
I bet dogs found it difficult to eat regular toxic dogfood...
I give my dogs sardines as well. I just mix them with their food though, once a week. And always sardines in water, only. As others contain seed oils. Take care.
Sardines get heavily oxidized sitting in cans...so they are not really worth it. If you insist on sardines, they will not oxidize as much if they are canned in olive oil....However, most olive oil is not pure...So, just don't bother with Sardines unless you have a great source. I don't know about cod liver.@@dominusstyx
I eat both I also add wild caught Alaskan salmon to the mix and then some shell fish like Oysters and muscles for zinc. I do this like a fish type of salad much like I used to make tuna salad back before I new to do better. I have been watching your channel since the doctor had diagnosed me with type two diabetes and following your information I reversed it in six months without meds with the approval of my doctor of course. I don't think my doctor expected the results because she was very surprised when she couldn't recognize me after six months. I was transformed. Even though I beat it I know I can never go back to my old unhealthy habits so I continue on my journey for good health. Thank you Dr.Berg for doing what you do. I am very grateful 🙏 😊
Leave aside our consuming but for your comparison is of immense value for our health perspective. We are blessed🙏
Thanks for explaining the difference between cod liver and salmon muscle meat!
I had no idea you could even buy these. I stay away from oil supplements because they are mostly oxidised but these are oncredible for omega 3! I got online and ordered some immediately! Thank you!
❤❤
I mix it together and add finely chopped onion and it makes a great meal❤
That's great. Enjoy!
Never knew. As always, great information. Thanks
Glad you the information shared here. Have a nice day!
Great comparison! Thank you!
I eat both products - I learned to love cod liver....it's really very good. I love sardines - especially Nuri brand....but I try all sorts - cheap to expensive....always in olive oil
I love fish, but have never had sardines. What does it taste like and how do you get pass eating the bones? Thanks
I heard that sardines are healthier packed in water instead of olive oil as the olive oil can't be trusted to be extra virgin, cold pressed and 100% olive oil and not a blend. If you can verify from the brand that it's at least 100% olive oil and not a blend then I would consume it. If not, I wouldn't.
Sardines are so small their bones are almost imperceptible! I believe most people would not know they were eating the entire fish, bones and all!
Dr Berg, I thought I’d be smart and get a ferment Cod Liver oil supplement. I experienced a migraine for 2 days after taking! There’s no question in my mind I have a low histamine intolerance issue. I’ll stick to the non-fermented😕
Where do you find canned cod liver?
Ordered this product---tastes great! Great video!!!
Smashing as always, Dr Berg! Loved to know more about cod liver. Thank you so much 🙏🏻
Hi cod liver is the best omega fatty acid Guyana South America Canada

Thanks, Dr. Berg for recommending Cod Liver a few years back. Been having it regularly ever since and often together with sardines or salmon! Very tasty combos!

That's very helpful. Thank you for daily education.
Thank you for the factual information. I eat sardines 3 times a week.
Delicious and my bloodwork is always good. Will experiment and try the cod liver by introducing it once a week. Still biased towards sardines because they really are delicious.
Me too. King Oscar Brisling sardines are the best, small and tender.
glad to hear it, I eat both, the cod liver once every 2 weeks in a salmon salad with 3 eggs and parsley (like an egg salad).
Yum, sounds great!
Dr Berg you did it again. I had been wondering about this 3 days of eating sardines? Wondering if it’s a necessary step to revamp your microbiome? I’ve been very happy 🎉since I learned about fat, carbs, protein. Ketogenic low carb has changed our lives. And your VIDEOS keep us alert to the many changes as you keep digging in your research 🙌🙌 thank you. I’m also seeing that carnivore is something I needed to do to get my inflamed psoriasis since I moved to NW central Oregon!
Thanks Dr… I have cod liver oil a few times a week, a tablespoon’s worth each time. Don’t have sardines often but local seafood shop sells them fresh
Thanks for this. Just the video I need.
You're welcome! Glad you found it useful.
Thank you for charging your researchs and good informations
Dear doctor, we learn a lot from you. We understand what and why we should do with our body. Thank you. From Central EU.
Alright Dr Berg I’m 41 and have never tried cod liver before but I’m gonna head to the supermarket tomorrow and I’m going to give it a try, wish me luck.
I ordered Belvedere from Amazon after this video. The flavor is amazing the texture I need to get used to.
I'm looking at iCan vs Belvedere the vitamin content is significantly different! I guess I should buy iCan oh well next order.
I've been eating mackerel in olive oil in these type of cans that i buy at walmart, but i'll start eating the sardines here and there as well. The cod liver i've never seen, i'm gonna hunt it down, thanks for another great video!!!
That is a very interesting video. Thank you very much.
You're most welcome.
Very helpful. Thank you.
Glad you mentioned the phosphorus amount in sardines. With my kidneys I need to watch the intake of phosphorus.
Doc i literally just started eating sardines adding cod liver now as well. Your timing has always been epic! Much love. Keep up the good work.
Fantastic!
I ate if for the first time last weekend, it tastes great. The idea made me kind of grossed out while eating it and saying “tastes like tuna….” When I had a few small bites i could eat it normally. Gonna gave it again this weekend, trying once a week. Still kind of nervous but also looking forward it because it tastes good and is so good for you…. I’m pregnant as well so it’s a mega vitamine
Thanks for highlighting the different values of both sardine and codliver oil . I take cod liver oil gel one a day.
Thank you for your great work
Glad to help!

Thank you Dr Berg!
🙋💕
Glad to hear that! Thank you for watching!
Wow! Good one. I'm going to crank up my intake of cod liver. Thanks!
Great video!
I'm over 70 and have never come across cod liver for sale in any store that I've shopped in. Maybe it was sold when I was a child living in NYC during the 50s, but my mom gave me cod liver oil.
I love sardines and other oily fish and buy them canned because they are cheaper and more readily available...and I buy cod liver oil at my local pharmacy.
Dont understand why people are so afraid of fat! 😂 Every day, I consume about 350 grams of fat from 5 tablespoons of coconut oil, 1 tablespoon of ghee, ½ pound of pecans, 1 stick of butter, 1 avocado, bout a pound of No Sugar Bacon and wow do I feel good! 🎉 I stay somewhere between 4% and 8%, and my body fat and muscles feel as hard as a cinder block 💯 Thank, you Dr. Berg! Have a great day, everyone! 🙂
Once you go fat, you never go back!
I don't know you, but I don't buy it
Exactly
I do the same. My Dr is impressed with the amount of good cholesterol I have. 1st the Dr used to say my cholesterol was high and wanted to put me on meds. But, I asked for the levels of my good cholesterol...that's when she was trying to tell me how bad it was and even if it was the good cholesterol it was high. I was told by 2 other Drs to continue to do what I was doing.
I feel good
I'm energetic, so why change
Fats are better than killer synthetic sugars

I love this guy, he got me started on both of these and I've been eating them for over two years now! How often do you suggest eating cod liver? Is it bad for raising cholesterol? Thank you!
I love Cod Liver. Thank you Dr Berg. I would have never tried it if you didn't approve of it so enthusiastically. About two or three times a week I CRAVE this stuff, it's so good and filling.

I blend a can of cod liver with a can of smoked oysters and spread on keto high fibre toast with avocado and olives on the side.

A video on "Fish Oil" vs "Cod Liver Oil" would be awesome! (I use Carlsons)
Grocery Outlet in Portland had premium Sardines in water for .23 cents a can vs $3.89 usual price because they were coming up on expiration. Bought half a cart full. 15x24qty boxes so I am set.
sardines are ok but I like mackerel better and yes I tried cod livers for the first time this year. now am going to combine the 2
I like mackerel more too, despite the strong flavour. Loaded with fats!
Great. Enjoy there!
Sardines are safer to eat.
I've been eating that exact same sardine brand that's in the advertisement for this video for a few months now......twice a week for lunch. I may give the cod liver a try as well.
Oh man! I know this is going to be great. I've eaten sardines for years, but just started enjoying cod liver (thanks to Dr. Berg's recommendation) both are so satisfying and delicious.

Lol I have bottle of cod liver in my fridge and it always weighs into my health equation 😊
We shouldn't go away from some things our parents or grandparents gave us for good health even if it does taste yucky 😂 as the benefits far outweighs the taste 😊
Cheers much again Dr Berg ❤
I bought that same exact can of sardines at Costco this week. Will look for cod.
i am from central Europe, and cod liver is very priced food. We used it for decorated toasts on holidays. Now I have one can every 2 weeks. Just discard oil to the bottle, and put the liver on plate. Sprinkle with ground black pepper, and chopped green scallion. You can smash it little bit with fork. And on the end sprinkle with fresh squeezed 1/2 lemon juice. It is so delicious. It suppose to be on slice of bred, spread with butter, but I don't eat any bread. The leftover of oil keep in fridge, and have a one tsp or Tbsp daily.
Not sure I've ever seen this at the store, I'll have to check
Thanks again for all these great videos 👍
