Mainly cod liver was a natural source of vitamin D, that is how vikings managed to thrive in Northern Europe when in Central Europe people were suffering from rickets. But like they said in the clip, the modern processing destroys some of the vitamins and they get added on later.
Smoked cod liver spread on rye bread is lovely, if you like liver, fish and smoke flavour.

@Æsa It's a strange recurring theme (or maybe not so strange if you're conspiracy theorist). Many articles of "best cities to move to" often cite questionable destinations. Montreal is a common example that often top charts, but if you've ever lived there for longer than 3 (summer) months, there's no way you'll list it as a top spot.

My babci used to drink a shot of cod liver oil every day. In recent decades here in the US cod liver oil has gone down in popularity. It has been replaced by fish body oil from small fish. Usually, sardines, anchovies and mackerel are used. Supposedly, the smaller fish haven't bioaccumulated as much mercury and PCB's as the larger fish. There are processes to remove those toxins from larger fish. Yet, if you have to put vitamins back in why not just take the fish body oil?

First, Most of what has been said here is rubbish, How do I know? well in the early 70's before the Common Market destroyed the British fish industry, I did a couple of trips on a deep sea trawler out of Hull. On the deck there were two big vats which were fired up as soon as we started trawling, These Vats were tended by the Apprentices/Decky learners and the proceeds were shared by those lads, sort of as a bonus to make up for the small size of their share of the main catch. It was Cod Liver Oil vats, But any fish liver went in, Cod, Herring, Skate, even Coley liver went in. It was bought by Seven Seas usually, purified, bottled and sold as Cod Liver Oil. If we only caught Cod it was Cod liver Oil, BUT When other livers went in you couldn't tell the difference, But the lads prefered Cod because it gave the biggest yield. One trip we didn't catch any Cod at all, but the Vats of liver oil was still sold as Cod Liver Oil.

When I first started taking CLO I don't think it was going through all of those processes to make it taste better because it was really strong, fishy and really nasty tasty. But I learned how to choke it down. However for the past 2 years I've been taking it, it has been very mild and I don't mind the taste at all though I detect a very slight fish taste.

every nutritionist can tell you the benefits of liver. you could practically live on it. A, D, Magnesium, Potassium, Omega 3 without all the extra omega 6. All very difficult to get from any other source. The heat treating unfortunately destroys most of the vitamin A and D. It was great to finally see visuals on the collection of millions of fish, properly gutted for one single part, then the industrial processing of one single constituent of that one part, so that already well-fed humans can sip on an elixir made from the distilled dead parts of earth creatures. Looking forward to future concoctions from the species human, such as giraffe bone oil, lizard turd extract, and god’s hair clippings pizza

The first time I experienced it I was at work and had this weird feeling I was having a panic attack. I experimented with taking cod liver oil on and off and sure enough there was a connection. I can take krill oil. It does not cause me the indigestion feeling in the chest. Weird, I know.

@@niellalien Honestly, they all taste good to me. The cod liver itself is delicious. The cod liver oil, on the other hand, is definitely an unpleasant gulp but palatable enough when mixing with other food as part of a meal. Recently, I've just been taking cod liver oil as a supplement because the amount of oil in a single can is just a lot. I'm curious how much of the vitamin A and D are in the oil versus the liver itself. I wanted to compare the cost effectiveness of canned cod liver in its own oil versus cod liver oil supplement, but the nutrition labels for the canned cod liver are all over the place despite basically being the same product, so I'm not sure how comparable they all really are. It probably wouldn't hurt to just calculate vitamin A and D per dollar and just go with whatever is cheapest, but, then again, I wouldn't want to reward a manufacturer who inflates the nutritional values, so I'll probably just continue to buy from different companies since they're all essentially the same product.
If you're curious, these are the ones I've purchased and enjoyed:
      Threeline (currently $33 for a 12-pack of 4.3 oz cans-I paid $36)
      Belveder (currently $39 for a 12-pack of 4.2 oz cans-I paid $38)
