This is TOO surreal. I never thought I'd find a dedicated canned fish youtube channel, but I am glad that I did. I was eating a can of sardines after being inspired by your channel and it made me think about life. How sometimes we have these ideas in our head about a particular subject and can’t be convinced otherwise until we experience something that changes our perspective. Food is such a basic aspect of our life that we can all relate to and we’re all hardwired to seek food when we’re hungry. To be able to open a can of sardines and have your perspective changed goes to show that sometimes we have a very tenuous grasp on things in life. That sometimes life can still surprise us.
Life is like a can of sardines. There is hidden beauty all around us and sometimes we just don’t notice it. That sometimes even the littlest of things can be powerful and life changing.
There is something magical about sardines. You feel powerful after discovering sardines, like nothing can hold you back. That if you can conquer a can of sardines, what can stop you? You just experienced something incredible that the world has to offer and so many people walk around you without knowing themselves. It’s like knowing a powerful secret and all you want to do it share it. And if this secret exists in plain sight, what other interesting things in life are just waiting to be discovered?
I think canned sardines transcends being just basic food. It’s a metaphor for opening up our minds, bringing down walls in our life rather than raising them, and learning to try something new that at first seems strange and unwelcoming.

Just ate my first can of sardines.
Matiz Wild Sardines in Spanish Olive Oil.
I knew it was good for me and I like fish. You helped with the fear. I had a few beers, got the drunk hunger in me, and went to town.
I opened to tin to see three fat sardines. Being larger was definitely intimidating and I do kind of thing it might have been easier to start with a smaller fish, the King Oscar sprats or whatever else is recommended. I just went for it. No weird textures, everything was just smooth and tender. Taste was like the best canned tuna I've had- and I've had the fancy oil-packed stuff in jars. Having fat fish was probably a bonus in the end because it was very tender, moist, and delicious.
There was maybe the smallest textural element of scales and skin and bones but overall the entire experience was smooth and delicious.
I used a fork, it was kind of awkward. Your chopsticks technology seems good.
Don't be scared, it's cheap and healthy and delicious.
This sent me 🤣, next time I come home drunk the can of sardines are not surviving

“Its got a spine, but Youve got a spine too so dont be actin like its gross” had me DYING. Im not a fish guy or anything but my cousin gave me a can of deens yesterday and im nervous about trying them. I had them as a kid in mustard with crackers w my uncle when i was a kid, but ill be 21 this year. Anyways this channel is amazing
Deens in mustard is my favorite! Yum
Never before have i been more curious to try sardines. You actually made them seem more appetizing than i’d ever thought. aim going to have to try here soon. With my favorite hot sauce and saltines probably.
I just opened and ate a can that one of my buddies left at my house months ago. Do it. So good.
Sardines with hot sauce on crackers is a go to late night snack for me.
‘Tines n Deens all night baby
My favorite way to eat sardines is to add a drained can to tuna salad or replace the tuna with sardines altogether. It's a richer, elevated version and even makes the spine melt into the mix. A pinch of cumin and oregano makes it something to write home about.
good flavor but a bit too mushy if its just sardines. same with using salmon, too mushy. i think a hybrid is the ideal personally
You absolutely changed my view and I really enjoyed my first can of sardines yesterday. I am the type of person that won't eat chicken off the bone, or have issues with textures when it comes to meat/fish. The tail freaked me out, the spine freaked me out but it sorta melted and the spine was like a tiny crunch like a clump of sugar that melts right away, very interesting and fun. I love olives and it honestly had a similar taste of green olives. Thank you so much!!
omg i have that issue to 😭😭its ground beef for me
The spine provides some extra calcium too. So if anything, it’s for your health
I’ve just tried my first tin of sardines and am so completely pleased by the experience. I feel silly for having searched how to eat them but am appreciative for having come across your video. At 35 and with no particular aversion to any sort of food I feel slightly like I wasted a fair bit of time not eating them. One tin of sardines and a small hand full of mixed nuts and I am completely full! I will definitely watch more of your videos and definitely be eating sardines again.
I felt like I've also wasted a good bit of time, NOT eating them! Sardines are super nutritious and filling, and was my go-to 'easy lunch' for all those work from home days in the past few years. I like the tomato-based ones, as the main sauce, served over linguine and garnished with chopped basil. Shake some Tabasco on it. Delicious.
Oh I too feel like an idiot for searching for videos for how to eat these! I have never eaten a sardine in my life. I am a little bit nervous! And for that I feel silly!
Hey, don't feel bad. I'm 70 and am just now searching for how to eat them because the thought of them having their heads attached to their bodies is so repulsive I haven't been able to even open a can. Now that I see that there's a brand that cans them headless, I can go ahead and try them.
Nice video!
@@jb6712all of the brands I have tried are headless and tail-less.
I’ve never seen a more matter of fact individual. I didn’t know I needed this channel in my life but here we are.
About 7 years ago a co worker opened up a can for lunch. I was like, “no way you really just opened that in the office…” he said, “try one”. I was instantly hooked. they’re super good on Scandinavian fiber crisps.
Man I needed to google what "fiber crisps" are xD
Way to really resonate with the audience at large citing “Scandinavian fiber crisps”
I bought a can, and am still trying to summon the drive. As many recovering picky eaters know, the texture is a big deal; and you are doing great work directly addressing the bones and tails.
Add some tomato paste and mush them up to crack the spines, then enjoy on hot buttered toast. Or enjoy with some spaghetti. Only deviants would eat them straight out a can.
I love the taste but have trouble with the texture sometimes. What I recently discovered is that you can find some brands that sell "fillets". Those have no bones and they're much easier for a beginner to get into.
@@accountnamewithheldWhen a filipino doesnt have money they tend to get a can of sardines from the government

As an alternative, they also have canned sardines that are skinless and boneless.
Honestly man, the spine was the biggest thing holding me back. Hearing you say it's ok to eat the spine made me believe I could eat the spines, and I did. Thank you sir for helping me unlock this nutritious and delicious snack to my pantry.
That (spine/bones), along with the concern that they might have packed the fish with the heads still attached to the bodies---I've seen that in some other videos about sardines---has had me hesitant to eat them. But now that I see that there's at least one brand that removes the heads, I can buy some and try them.
The smell and the taste hold me back.
@@MichaelTheophilus906same 😂😂😂 but today i will push my self to eat it
@jb6712 never seen em with the head still on tbh but I'm glad my mom put me on to them when I was a kid. An old French recipe is to mash them with butter or margarine and throw them on some crackers. SO i continue binging your canned fish files, and i start out small with some boneless skinless stuff from trader joes and i wasnt too impressed, BUT determined. My girlfriend is getting curious as to what im watching and i show her your videos and shes interested. So long story short my girlfriend and i now try out and test different brands, types and styles of sardines and canned fish every night while watching your videos and we love it and look forward to it every night, lol. We're from NY as well so we're gettin into all the stop and shop and trader joe brands for now. Thanks, Matt 👌🏼
Until recently I worked at a grocery store stocking shelves, and my "home isle", the isle i learned first and stocked most often, was the isle with sardines. They were on the top shelf in the back end of the isle with all the other canned fish/meat. The one kind of sardines they had was that exact King Oscar can. And every time I stocked them, which was not often since they did not sell quickly, I thought about grabbing a can to try. Now, literal days after I move on from that job I get a video telling me to try them.
King Oscar isn't bad, I'd recommend the jalapeno ones, pepper ones are a close second
I grew up eating sardines (in oil, or tomato sauce), and I typically ate them with sliced onions and steamed white rice. Then I switched to the Nuri brand the spicy kind and I can't get enough of them, even though each can is pricey now. There's a substitute from Morroco I sometimes find that tastes just like the Nuri brand but I can't recall their name at the moment. People usually gross out when they find out I eat sardines. 🤷♂
I'm from Morocco, and it's the biggest producer of sardines in the world. When I was younger they went for the equivalent of 0.2$ a kilo.
We have a super tasty dish where the raw sardines are filled with parsil, garlic and spices and then fried.
This guy’s videos feel like an SNL skit. He’s just that got that dead pan serious but quietly hilariousness about him and I love it! I stumbled on these late one night and I do have a bunch of canned fish I got in case of emergency due to power grid troubles in our area, but honestly I have been kind of scared to try them. And he is helping me overcome that fear about this. My mom always acted like these were the worst thing in the world and said never to eat them, but she said the same thing about raspberries, which I didn’t taste until I was 21 and fell in love with them, so I’ve questioned her taste ever since. Grew up being told never to eat certain foods all because she hated them. Raspberries taught me that I have my own taste pallet and I’ll be willing to bet I like these, because I like fish and seafood.
The aesthetic and content is superb 🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼
I think a really excellent entry level sardine is the season brand from Costco. They’re bigger fillets so they actually have to cut them up and you don’t see the scales or bones. They are also in olive oil which I think is the easiest way to start eating them. I used to be a sardine hater until I tried that brand and now I don’t ever leave on a camping trip without a few in my pack. They’re a little bit expensive, especially if you buy them in singles, but I think they’re absolutely worth it.
Those are good. The smoked ones from trader Joe's are good too
In my life I have eaten may be a half a dozen cans of sardines, I'm 73 and sense i have been watching your channel I must have eaten dozens of cans. I have developed a taste for sardines. One thing I was told years ago that sardines were canned with all their guts, just the heads chopped off. I love smoked baby oysters, clams and now sardines. Thank you for your channel
I’m so happy I found this channel and this community. Back when I was taking adhd meds canned fish saved my life. I tried to be a vegetarian for 7 years but I decided to stop because I wanted canned fish to much.
Good on you! Meat is the only food you can live solely on and not be deficient. And you know what they say, you are what you eat, and you're made of meat.. almost everyone is deficient in omega 3's, real omega 3's. Most are protein deficient, which leads to overeating and lacking muscle and bone mass.
Anyone know the music he’s using in this vid?
Finally a vegetarian that understood that fish are fucking animals. Always found it so weird that vegans and vegetarian’s ate fish and tried keeping the bold face lie of being “vegan”
@mikafoxx2717 That's factually inaccurate. Eat meat if you want but don't lie to yourself to make yourself feel better.
If you don't mind asking me as a fellow Ritalin/Adderall kid why did they specifically save your life in relation to the meds, is it because your stomach was closed up and you couldn't bring yourself to eat anything else?

Also thanks for this video! I found your content a loooong time ago when I was getting ready to try some sardines, I wanted to watch someone open a can on CZcams and now here I am!
Coming from another Matthew Carlson, I really appreciated this video as I pursue my sardine journey.
NOW THATS WEIRD, i just had that conversation yesterday.
Thanks a lot Matthew! Subbed
Nice, back to basics video. King Oscar…can’t go wrong!
I started eating sardines a few months ago, I feel they’re probably healtheir than most other fish products you can get, especially considering their size, they have less toxins than a larger fish would, and the bones and stuff add to the nutrients
i was waiting for some special tips, tricks or background infos, but it‘s literally just a guy eating sardines. loved every second.
Anyone who says that King Oscar sardines are not the best for your dollar can FIGHT ME.
Decided to bite the bullet and try sardines after this video and learning about their nutritients.
The first brand I tried was La Sirena sardines in spicy tomato sauce. A bigger variety of sardine, but I was super into it after the first taste! While the spine was bigger because of the fish's size, the bone is indeed super soft, no crunch!
Second can I tried was King Oscar alongside some Triscuts. They're indeed a great set of sardines, and the crackers helped absorb some of the oiliness. All-in-all so glad I decided to give them a try! I'm a new fan!
The spicy tomato sauce is good stuff! It's a great change of pace from the Olive Oil and Mustard that I usually eat. It also seems like the bigger sardines are more common in Latin food stores.
Thanks for this video. Keep shining your light.
Happy to see youtube return to its roots. This is what the platform was made for. Nature is healing ❤
also great with sardines and crackers: just slice up a little mini cucumber and stick a slice on each cracker with it, man. so fresh and delicious.
Watched your video as I ate my first can of sardines ever at 51 years old. Was not expecting such a mild flavor. The King Oscar vinegar and capers was great
Welcome to the party Kathy!
Vinegar and capers!? How have I not found that version yet! To the supermarket....! :)
