Six weeks later, Prince William of Gloucester died in a plane crash, Prince Richard became heir apparant to the duchy of Gloucester. He had to give up his career as an architect, because someone had to look after the estate and his father was suffering from stroke. Prince Richard became the 2. Duke of Gloucester in 1974, when Prince Henry died at the age of 74. He was the last surviving son of George V.
