  • (12 Jun 1961) The approaches to York Minster were crowded for the first wedding here for over 600 years. Inside, Princess Margaret and her husband were followed by the Queen Mother and Queen Victoria Eugenie of Spain. The bridegroom's mother with Princess Alexandra, the Duke of Kent, with his brother Prince Michael as best man. Then, Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Philip entered with the Prince of Wales. These were the final moments before the fanfare for the bride. Now came Miss Katherine Worsley, on the arm of her father, Sir William, in a beautiful gown, the veil sweeping down to the magnificent fifteen-foot train. The ceremony was conducted by the Archbishop of York (Archbishop of Canterbury elect). Then, bride and groom walked towards the choir of the Minster, for the signing of the royal register, witnessed by Her Majesty. Before walking down the aisle to the West Door, the Duke of Kent and his very charming bride paid homage to the Queen.

      My earliest memories of the Duchess of Kent is of her presenting the women's trophy at Wimbledon! 🎾 Always so elegant, Royal in every way! I've always liked her, as well as her husband the Duke of Kent. They were both loyal to their cousin the Queen and gave exemplary service in her stead wherever they went.

    Such a dignified,and beautiful bride in Katherine Worsley. I know times were so different back then,and this was a solemn occasion,but blimey,the expressions on some faces,you'd have thought they were attending a funeral. The Duchess has endured much in her life,'Bad with her nerves' as my mother would say,but she's always served her monarch with grace and dignity.

One evening the regimental band, of which I was a member, were told to don their best uniforms and get over to the officers' Mess as they were expecting the Archbishop of York for dinner. We played a programme of suitable music during which the Archbishop, Michael Ramsay came and had a few words with our Bandmaster - then he left. To my knowledge , apart from probably asking a Mess steward to refill his glass, he did not speak to anyone below the rank of a commissioned officer. What this old fart should have done, being a professional Christian was to visit the NAFFI and the NCO and Other Ranks Messes. At did Jesus Christ when he overturned the tables of the usurers in the Temple in Jerusalem, Ramsay did not have to stick to protocol

    Does anyone reading this know if Katherine Worsley by, any chance related to the Ms. Lucy Worsley (Historian / Curator) of Hampton Court and Historic Royal Palaces? She's always come-across to me as being someone who straddled the fence of both stuffiness and silliness, all rolled into one. Someone who could quickly change demeanor at the drop of a hat depending on the occasion. Does anyone reading this agree?

    • @chevalierdupapillon
      @chevalierdupapillon Před rokem +1

      Good question, to which the answer appears to be 'no'. I asked myself the same when I first came across Lucy Worsley's work, so I looked her up in the genealogy of Katherine Worsley's family (which is in Burke's Peerage & Baronetage because her father was a baronet) where she isn't listed. The Duchess herself, on the other hand, is a descendant (in the female line) of Oliver Cromwell, and the first of those to have married into the Royal family.

    • @manuellubian5709
      @manuellubian5709 Před rokem

      @@chevalierdupapillon OR, it could be that much like Anne and her 1st husband, Miss. Lucy's parents chose, NOT to endow (aka: burden) Lucy with the lifelong responsibility and commitment of being (end)titled. This is in large measure why Zara and Peter Phillips have been able to fly under the radar and enjoy much of their personal life out of the public glare.

    • @chevalierdupapillon
      @chevalierdupapillon Před rokem +1

      @@manuellubian5709 There are a number of reasons why that wouldn't have happened in the Worsley case though. Firstly, absolutely no title goes with being a member of a Baronet's family except for the male head of the family (who is titled "Sir Firstname Surname, Baronet" once he succeeds the previous Baronet) and his wife (who is then titled "Lady Surname"), and Lucy Worsley is neither. You can see this with the bride of 1961 too, who - as the daughter of a Baronet - was just plain Miss Katherine Worsley.
      Secondly, even if the family in question was sufficiently higher-ranking to actually have courtesy titles for some members (even then of course, only for the closest relatives of the head of the family), such as "Hon. Firstname Surname" or "Lord/Lady Firstname Surname", and even if on top of that this particular family had decided that Lucy shouldn't use that title, she would still be listed in Burke's Peerage, with just the addition of "doesn't use courtesy title" (something which you can see here and there, but which is extremely rare). Your own example illustrates this: while Peter and Zara Phillips were not given titles, they are nonetheless listed in all genealogies of the royal families.
      Finally, that very comparison with the Phillips family is also a good illustration of how different the stakes are depending on rank. Peter and Zara P. are the grandchildren of the Queen herself, and thus part of a family that was and is hounded by paparazzi because there is such an overwhelming, world-wide interest in them. (Incidentally, I am not sure whether not being titled has in fact saved the Phillips children much bother, because if you compare them to Lord Linley [nowadays 2nd Earl of Snowdon] and Lady Sarah Chatto, i.e. to their exact equivalents but for the title, it seems to me that the latter two aren't really harrassed that much more either. But that doesn't change the main point, as you are of course right about Princess Anne's intentions.) Belonging to the family of a Baronet, on the other hand (and not even being the Baronet's child, because these are all known and Lucy W. isn't among them, but rather being the child of a Baronet's uncle or cousin) gets you virtually no attention at all: there are thousands if not tens of thousands of people who have that status, and thousands whose titled relatives are much more high-ranking. So while one can see how the idea of making your children stand out a little less made much sense in the Philipps case, I don't see why it would have been necessary in the Worsley case.

      opposed the match because she wanted her son, Prince Edward,
      Duke of Kent to marry a European royal.
      Edward and Catherine postponed the announcement of their
      engagement and their wedding to "make sure that they really
      loved each other" and to appease his mother! Still, they decided
      to go ahead and get married despite his mother's objections.
      Princess Marina herself, had a very unhappy life and was not
      only widowed when the children were young; but because of
      her husband's death, the family was "poor" (for royals).
      Princess Marina probably did not like her daughter's choice
      of a husband (a commoner) or her younger sons choice of a
      wife (If she was even alive when they married ... I can not
      remember) Sadly Princess Marina died at a relatively young
      age.
