Penn State at Purdue 1999 GAME STORY

- Penn State maintained an undefeated record with a challenging win in West Lafayette against Purdue. In a game where the Lions really struggled to get the running game and short passing game going, two explosive passing plays gave them just enough offense to supplement the defense. Anytime you're facing a Drew Brees offense, you'll give up yardage and points, but in this game, the two first-team all-americans came up with montrous plays to put touchdowns on the board from the defensive side of the ball. Between Arrington, Brown and Brees, this game certainly had star power.
Penn State's Top Performers:
Lavar Arrington: 4 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery, 1 defensive touchdown, 1 blocked kick
Courtney Brown: 2 TFLs, 1 sack, 1 interception returned for TD
Kevin Thompson: 9-15, 173 yards, 2 TD passes
Penn State moved onto an 8-0 record while 16th ranked Purdue suffered it's third loss of the season with five wins at the time. But the Boilermakers ended 1999 with a 7-5 overall record and an Outback bowl loss against Georgia. They finished the year with an AP national ranking of 25th, nationally.
LaVar Arrington and Courtney Brown. What a duo they were during that 1999 season. This game and the Pitt game were prime examples of those two destroying anything in sight.
Should've put them on offense as well.
Always a fun game to watch, but in hindsight looking back, it was a prelude to the problems that would start the next year. It took two blocked FGs, two defensive returns for TDs by the 2 best defensive players in college football at the time, and another bomb to Chafie that was well defended, he just made a play similar to what he did vs Miami a few weeks earlier. That's 21-27 points by players that wouldn't be on the team in 2000.
To be fair, if this team had made it as far as they probably should have, would we really have cared about a down 2000 and 2001 season?

Crazy game, amazing that the defense could overcome the absolute ineptitude of the offense

The matchups were crazy in this game future HOFer vs HOFer. Strength against strength. I remember being in a car and listening to the game. It really did come down to the last play of the game.
