- Penn State traveled to Iowa City to snag a ho-hum type of win where the "between the tackles" running game couldn't get much going until the second half. There were a few big runs broken in this one which was kicked off by Eddie Drummond's big play on an end around to open up the scoring. Quarterback Kevin Thompson split time with Rashard Casey and when Casey was in, he made the Iowa defense cover the entire field with his running ability. It was Casey who loosened up the Hawkeye defense so that Penn State could score more later in the game. It could have been more of a blowout if it weren't for two interceptions thrown by PSU quarterbacks deep inside Hawkeye territory.
Penn State's Top Performers:
Eric McCoo: 13 carries, 128 yards, TD
Rashard Casey: 74 rushing yards, TD .. 54 passing yards
Lavar Arrington: 6 tackles, 1 sack, 1 PD, 4 QB hurries
Penn State moved on for another week without a loss on the season, and sat at 6-0. Iowa dropped to 1-4, and would end 1999 with a 1-10 record, which placed them dead last in the Big Ten standings.
Remember this game well! My son Joe Iorio first freshman walk-on debut at center. Fun stuff!
Joe Iorio first freshman walk-on to start in Joe Paterno era.
This penn state was so elite. Wish they had couple better players on offense to help the defense out.
