  • We were stopped by security on the way into our first Jacksonville Icemen hockey game and had a near autism meltdown from sensory overload and nervousness. She is nervous about escalators, elevators, stairs and pretty much every non-level walking surface. Now that she knows what to expect we will be back and next time will be easier. GO ICEMEN!

This vlog made me have a total mommy moment. I have 4 kids. 3 boys and my youngest is a girl. All three of my boys are protective of their sister. But specifically my middle son Jacob who is 14. He genuinely cares for my daughter Kendalls wellbeing. In this vlog when you guys were making your way into the arena, Isaiah has this look of absolute, unconditional love for Abigail and says "you okay? Say I'm nervous" with the sweetest, proudest, big brother smile on his face. Was the sweetest thing ever and turned me into a blubbering mess. I know you guys don't need me to tell you how great he is. But it's important that he knows it translates through the videos and doesn't go unnoticed. He's going to be an amazing father one day.....far, FAR away from now.

We bring a huge diaper bag backpack with us whenever I take my 6 month old somewhere and it’s always been allowed in stadiums. She just didn’t see a baby, so she made assumptions before she even listened.

i do a security job like this and yes we are told in certain situations no bags and generally there is no exception for the "average public" but if its medical needs and things that are required throughout then of course it's allowed! Usually we would give the bag a quick once over to make sure there is nothing dangerous or harmful to other members of public. In situations such as this we usually have already been briefed by the manger to give the all clear for this kind of thing.

I have a special bracelet and card and a special bag that says "Attention Security!
I have autism, OCD and ADHD. This bag is important and has been approved to be taken though security checkpoints by law. " The bracelet says "SPECIAL NEEDS MAY HAVE TROUBLE COMMUNICATING" same with the card so security must read and must speak carefully as I may not understand and may get upset if I take it the wrong way.

Thank you so much for including the security bit and not fussing at the guards. You were calm cool and collected and that's probably a key factor why they let you in. If you were fussing and yelling the likelyhood they would make an exception and let you in is slim. This family is fantastic and amazing!!!!

I am a new subscriber from the UK. My daughter is autistic and is 16. Her official diagnosis is "Higher Functioning Autistic Spectrum Disorder". She does well at school (although at the moment the stress because of exam year is really getting to her, she's depressed and anxious with sleep issues too) but socially she really struggles.
I think you were fantastic in the way you dealt with the whole evening, but particularly the security area. You stood your ground with respect for both Abbie and for the staff.
My daughter loved ice hockey at Abbie's age. We are lucky enough to have a rink and town team about 3/4 of a mile away from home. It is very much sensory overload at first, and always very loud. Once it gets going, the game goes by so quickly.
I'm looking forward to getting to know you all better through your videos 😀

Like I have stated in a previous video it is important for society to see others who have issues and to treat them with respect. Abigail did great and perhaps the depth perception can freak her out but good old dad was there to make sure she made it to her seat and she got to rock and roll to the music. Wow! Great video! That really brought back memories of taking our son places when he was young. Having Type 1 Diabetes, he always had a medical kit with him and the same thing would happen to us. As he has gotten older, his pockets have come in handy for his things. I love watching your vlogs. I was a Special Ed teacher, started out in Jacksonville Fl (the Mandarin area) for 8 years and then moved up to N. Georgia. I also have a nephew with Autism ,Aspergers , and extreme social anxiety. Your family is adorable and is definitely educating people on Autism. Abbie is such a special, beautiful young lady, and Isaiah is such a wonderful brother and son. He also cracks me up all the time..he's hilarious!! :)

I'm so glad you guys understand how important it is to push Abbie, but not to the point of a breakdown. I think it's important for all kids. You guys rock!

You are AMAZING parents for pushing her past her comfort zone, and making her see how much fun she can have if she gets past that uncomfortable part.

Our family peeps on the autism spectrum are known to us as our “amazers”. They never stop amazing us with how they cope or choose not to cope in a new situation. Everyday is an Amazing Adventure taking the good and the challenges with as much grace as we can give. Well done, Abby!

I absolutely love and appreciate your talk at the end where you defended the security people. I know from personal experience how frustrating similar situations can be. But in the end security is doing their job. And frankly, my frustration is *because* they are doing their jobs so well! It's often times forgotten that if a security person were to let you in without talking to their supervisor, they would be risking their jobs, risking the lives of everyone in there (God forbid there's something malicious in the bag). Thankfully the supervisor was able to come down and remedy this situation. I'm just really thankful for what you said about security guards, because it's something I have to constantly remind myself of. I'm appreciative of the work they do, even if it means I have to spend extra time explaining myself and waiting for a supervisor. In the end, it's for the safety of everyone around me (and my safety as well)!

Just watched this video, and I get that you guys have to pick and choose your battles.. definitely the way to handle it....and security was just doing their job. However, I HAVE to say that prior to the supervisor....I just didn't get the feeling of much compassion from them. It stirs up so many feelings in me....I can only imagine how difficult that can get for y'all as Abbie's parents. It definitely reinforces the NEED for the awareness your videos are meant to bring about. I remember what society's reaction was like with my sister.....she was 15 years older than me....and there was very little tolerance or effort in understanding back then. I'm 50 now....and I just don't know that there's been as much of an improvement in that area as one would hope. God bless ya'll for your efforts in awareness. Something about this video, in particular, brought my memories "out of hiding". Also, been meaning to tell you guys...Asa and Priscilla.....my husband and I were highschool sweethearts. If ya did the math with the age of our oldest and the years we've been married....you would realize we have something else in common...lol. Unfortunately, we've seen a lot of marriages....followed by divorces throughout our almost 35 years of marriage. Congratulations on your dedication to not just throwing in the towel when the going got tuff. We understand, and I believe it's something that both y'all and us can be proud of! 👊
