Bad Travel Day - Autism On An Airplane
Vložit
- čas přidán 20. 07. 2019
- It was a bad travel day...it just wasn't a good day in general. This was one of those situations as a parent and as an autism parent that we just wanted to throw in the towel and start over but we couldn't. We managed to keep smiling but by the time we got in the car to go home we were just done. Autism on an airplane can be so hard for everyone because of the sensory issues, the anxiety, and the challenges it presents. Without a doubt it is hardest on Abbie and that's what really breaks our hearts. On the good side of it all...the world is a far more accepting and understanding place than you might assume.

Ignore the ppl who are telling you to discipline Abbie. Her behavior is not malicious and doesn’t need to be disciplined. I wish ppl would understand this more.
It's ridiculous. You can't discipline someone into not having autism.
annagitana1 Right?! Some ppl are uneducated and like to think that discipline cures all.
I feel like that comes from people who dont understand. I think thats the reason why I watch these videos, I learn so much. I wish others would try to learn about autism too!
Angelica C Thank you for taking the time to learn more about Autism. It’s challenging at times to have a child with Autism. My Katie is my all
It's like telling a kid in a wheelchair to stop being a brat and just walk.
Got beat up by his sister... Dad!!! Don't tell the whole world. Epic
Faith Stortz that was hilarious 😂😂😂😂😂
That was so funny!
he sounded serious too 😂
I wish he was my brother
I’m autistic, and I just wanted to give you parents a 10/10 for this flight. You guys were so incredibly patient with Abby. I wish all autistic parents could respond as patiently as you, she’s so lucky to have you both !
Me and my neighbor both have autism and she has a more severe case then me but I sometimes go over and help her mom out when she’s to stressed or needs to get stuff done.
Patricia, you are incredibly high functioning for autism, but I do know there’s a wide ratio for IQ
Your comment was awesome !
@@celinapalfrey6001 Thanks you so much! Also instead of high functioning and low functioning people with autism usually prefer verbal or non verbal.

I can only imagine how she perceives the sounds of the airport, I don’t have autism, but even I find the airport environment overwhelming. She’s so strong! The whole family it’s amazing 💖
I agree and am so sad they are subjecting her to this. Continuity is major for this affliction as is noise abatement. One would wonder how important this trip is for the family to take her through an airport?
I don't think they are amazing
@@arribaficationwineho32 if you watched the beginning of video you would know she has flown before without any issues. If they didn't take her places because she may have a hard time she would never leave the house and live in a bubble. It would be miserable for her because she likes to go. In fact on this flight the flight to Texas she did fine, it was only the flight back home that she had any major issues. Places she has been on previous occasions she enjoys and on subsequent occasions the same places and or experiences gives her sensory overload issues. So you would rather an autistic people person to stay in a bubble and not experience life? It would behoove you to do some research on autism and gain some understanding.
@@vanessajones9524 okay? 🤣
as a person with autism and is REALLY sensitve to sounds, this warms my heart! thank you
The airport staff seemed really friendly and handled it well! That's one plus!
I agree every one of them seemed to be well versed in autism they were very understanding and accommodating that's great to see!
Well they should be educated and understanding. No need to be ignorant when dealing with any type of person who is special needs. Period.
Yes flight attendants and airports actually offer support towards autism and other stuff like ADHD and stuff I’m autistic but learnt to write they help me a lot wen I flie
There are loads of autistic kids around especially travelling .
Proud of LAX. Glad to see they’re cognizant of special needs.
Her crying broke my heart. I actually have tears. How frustrating to be upset and not be able to express why.
You guys are doing A GREAT JOB. Period. She has a fantastic support team around her.
yeah same i seen alot of videos of the family im one of their newest subscribers when she cries i just hate it its so so sad i wish i could help her
She was probably tired, bless her heart..
AnimaSola3o4 why did she cry tho
It was probably the hardest thing I ever went through(I had a cleft
palate and autism), being so stressed but never being able to tell anyone, but when I told my friend that, they just said it wasn’t that’s hard to not be able to speak. Some people need education.
Me too, it’s so sad that she can’t say why she’s crying
I guess most people didn’t expect Abby being an autistic girl, cause you can’t see it.
So they get confused from her actions.
Also all people started to be experts on parenting if a kid acts out.
Suddenly they got all the right advices how you should regret.
Even though they have no idea of autism or of Abby at all.
I think you doing great.
You guys always try to be calm and always try to be understanding and loving.
For Abby it was super hart. And you absolutely did amazing.
I'm a special needs nanny/ educator. I have a master's degree in special education. As parents you guys rock. You're daughter is doing fantastic. To the other people who don't understand she cannot control her actions, it the same if you discipline for breathing you have to breathe. The majority of Autistic children have a high IQ. Think how frustrating it is to them, when they have something to say but can't communicate their thoughts. Their thinking what's wrong with you, I know what I'm saying why don't you understand me. Children that are autistic are hyper sensitive to noises and new surroundings. You're daughter is a treasure. Keep up the great work your doing as a family.
Not to annoy you but in the last few sentences you said “you’re” which was wrong and then the final sentence you did “your” for proper grammar swap them…
@@alexbarker7511 why does that matter??? quit being the grammar police
That’s my dream job!
Thats a common missconception, they dont know what is going on, they dont have high IQ and cant conceptualize the world around them which usnt their fault (as with any disability or even any brain fuction) but romanticizing it in this way is incredibly dangerous and frankly wishful thinking. They can understand some commends and things but their brains just dont function the same way most people's do
Hi, I am a 31-year-old with Autism, I struggled a lot growing up, and I really wish I had a father as amazing and kind and understanding and patient as you. You seem like a really nice family.
Adeen it seems like you have gotten better, being able to write is amazing for autistic people!
@@sarahthebear2853 not autism is the same for everyone! different people are on different planes of the spectrum :)
I have autism and I’m 18 so things are sort of going ok but I need to learn a little bit more about life so that’s why I have a amazing family around me
I don’t get why this person is amazing just because he is saying what a nice family she has
Pokemonjammer nothing is “wrong” with you. Don’t let society tell you what’s “normal”. You are perfect the way you are and intended to be. Don’t let bullies break you down. You seem like a very smart kid and I hope you brush the negative things said about you, off. I’m sure you have amazing people backing you up and rooting for you ❤️ there are many autistic who live and do things just like anyone else. Never give up!!!
“Part of me wanted to leave you on the plane” - this is exactly why we love you guys so much! You tell it how it is, no filtering and making it all roses and glitter. And you know what? I’m 110% sure there were many parents flying that day who also wanted to leave their teenage daughter on the plane when they landed - special needs or not!!! 😂
Jessica Kelly I liked at the beginning where he talks about her beating her brother up and he’s in the back protesting. 😂
yes!! it's frustrating being talked to differently just because you're not neurotypical. i love that they're real about things and i don't know her so i definitely can't speak for her, but i think she loves it too
Yes! EXACTLY! Have two boys with autism, it's like this sometimes with us! They are my world, along with their sister and their dad! I don't know how I would get through this without their dad! I love them and am so proud to be their mom!
I don't think I would have ever told my young daughter that, though.
@@jamssnana4084 they didn’t tell her necessarily
She handles airports and planes way better than I do, and I'm not Autistic. When she got upset, it was like watching someone express outwardly what I feel internally in that situation.
Exactly what I was thinking. I feel like that a lot of times. She did a great job handling her experience. Go Abby!
Same i hate flying im so scard and overjwhelmed by it i hate it anxiety takes over
That breaks my heart.. knowing how amazing of a mother Pricilla is but watching her face as you guys got on to the second plane and seeing how she felt defeated makes me want to cry.... Abby is beyond blessed to have you 2 as her parents
The stranger saying “she’ll be alright” made me tear up.
What part?
You and me both.
Ella Kaukonen 11:35
why'd he say that lol I don't get it
@@mikaelakattenbroek2037 I'm assuming they could tell she was under a lot of stress from traveling. What a nice stranger.
why is no one gonna talk about how lovely and polite the staff at the airport and airplane was.
They did, repeatedly🙄
hello how are you doing
You guys are awesome. People can only learn the Autism culture by exposure. It's a learning experience for everyone!
That is thier job to be polite and appear friendly to everyone, why would be any different with a someone with a disability .
Hmmm bc they were ACTUALLY doing their job??
Gentle parents with a gentle brother. ❤️
Abbie at 14:45 when camp was mentioned bless her. She looked like she totally appreciated having something nice to think about. It's that feeling when you're so upset and someone you love is trying to cheer you up by talking about all your favourite things and you just can't help but smile. I so felt for her. These moments really help me understand how overwhelming a situation like that can be. Thank you for sharing these moments.
She doesn’t need discipline, she needs understanding and Love.
cutetsuna having worked with children on the Autism spectrum, I can tell you that they understand a tremendous amount and do respond to various forms of discipline. They can be ‘naughty’ just like any other child.
I agree
EatPlums don’t tell austitic children to discipline they don’t understand sicko
And that is what she has from her family and us
Well we all know that she might never be able to express her feelings to the point of being understood
I hate air brakes too, Abbie!! They startle me every time.
You know it's coming, you prepare for it, you tense up just a little... and still it finds a way to rattle you each and every time!
I haven’t been on a plane in a while and I probably look dumb asking this but what’s an air brake?
Georgette Bershad you don’t look dumb at all! you know when a bus pulls up at a stop, and makes that sharp sound like air being released? that’s an air brake. it’s such a sharp shocking sound, and even though I know the bus is going to make the sound, it scares even me, and i’m neurotypical!
Ikr lol
I hate any unexpected, sudden loud noise or movement. I'm a special needs adult (I've improved greatly over my almost 22 years) but I have hypersensitive ears/hearing so loud noise such as air brakes really bother me. I usually have to listen to the air brakes twice so I can time them and plug my ears so I can't hear them.
Watching this to be prepared myself. Abbie is an inspiration! My worst problem is the security and checks and I wear my headphones and have a wheelchair and have priority which means I get through quicker and I don't have to wait in a big queue. My fave is going to the airport shops and getting teddies
I hate those loud noises too. They send chills through my body. I love how Isaiah is always trying to calm her down and protect her. Love your family!
People who mention discipline clearly don't have special needs kids
So true
I am a special needs mom too and I agree
Exactly!
🙌 AMEN to that 🙌
I wished I could have seen that comment.
I am a special needs mum to a special needs son. We both have autism, spd and other things with it
Videos like this have 2 emotions for me first is sadness your all having a hard time but then proud when you all get through it and other people show true humanity around you.
Well said.
Indeed !
I like how you guys talked to the flight attendants about how she isn't in distress, and in reply to that, the pilot said hi to her. Thats amazing. You guys handle everything so well. 🖤🖤
Abbi crushed it. I’m so glad everybody was respectful and caring. Gives me hope.
Dad: she beat her brother up
Bro: WAIT NO-
And 1M ppl saw
Clo Riv that’s what I thought 🤣
the stranger that said "she'll be alright" just awh
Her smile warms my heart! My nephew was recently diagnosed with autism so finding yalls channel has really opened my eyes to this world and is helping educate me on how to interact with my nephew! I truly love watching y’all and love what y’all are doing !
The guy who said you were awesome, was right. I once read something about children that said "they're not giving you a hard time, they are HAVING a hard time". The way you resonate that statement through your compassion and not giving the answers but acknowledging her feelings and anxieties is amazing. She is amazing for doing this. The feelings she must experience had to be so overwhelming. My baby girl is two years old and I hope to remain as compassionate as you towards her in all her challenges ahead. This really hit me hard but I have nothing but respect for you all. Thank you for sharing and caring so much for her.
"She jacked me up" I LMAO'D when Isiah said that!
If there was an Amazing Brother Award, Isaiah would deserve to win it every year!
Liane Morran oh we should all come up with something for him..he so deserves it..he reminds me of my big sister Cindy..she was always there to cheer me on..
This is one of my biggest issues with my son, it's so hard to go into public (he also has Crohn's and a genetic mutation...his meltdowns can get really bad) because we really worry about ruining other people's day. It's something we need to work on as parents. We have found lately, people are way more understanding and patient than we thought they'd be. Watching this channel has helped us (me for sure as I'm the step father and this was all new for me) and it's helped me to understand my son better, how to communicate better and for that I appreciate you. It's rough, but I wouldn't have it any other way
Jkfgjfj
I love how honest you are. Both about Abbie’s struggles, and your own.
How does Abby react to sensory headphones?? We don't fly with my brother without them. He's not too sensitive to sound, it's most likely the pressure that helps to keep him calm
Abby doesn't like having things on her head (such as hats, sunglasses etc). In other videos where they try to get her to put something on her face or head, she pretty much immediately takes them off. Actually in this video, at around the 14:14 mark... she has headphones on but takes them off and won't put them back on.
I dont have and of this problems but I am photosensible,so without sunglasses I have headaches
Earplugs that don’t clasp on her head?
They are such a lovely family.
I feel terrible saying this but I don’t know if I could handle what they go through on a daily basis
I hear you! But then again I think you could if you had to🙂
Being strong isn't a choice. It's what you are when it's the only choice you have. The truth is that you would manage. Not because you would be doing so well at this very moment. But if the situation appeared you would, because you have to.
Yah facts
Tt Roxy same I wouldn’t cope if I had a disabled child
Phil McGibney obviously lol thanks for pointing that out I had NO idea
I’ve traveled for work for over 20 yrs and there were times that I was overwhelmed. She did well! Travel days are long stressful days. Your videos bring more awareness keep it up
Nothing wrong with being frustrated and venting your feelings. Your patience with your daughter is to be applauded.
The pressure could really be hurting her ears
i had started to feel a cold coming on, with congestion and sinus pressure. then i had to get on a 4 hour plane..i thought my ear drums were going to burst. it was awful! i would have cried if i wasn't in the middle seat..
@@sandraarriaga832 Oh gosh I'm so sorry and to try to control the pain sitting in between 2 people must have been agonizing. I had my ear drum burst flying from the West coast to the East coast and had to go straight to the Emergency Room. The gave me a super steroid shot and antibiotics just in case and I had to stay put for 2 weeks then travel almost 3000 miles home by renting a car that took a week. It took me 7 years before I got the courage to fly again. The pain is excruciating for sure.
Lovely Lisa Warrior Queen ouch! That sounds like a nightmare😣
started crying on an airplane because i had an ear infection and my ear was popping like crazy, worst pain ever.
if you hold 2 styrofoam cups one over each ear creating a seal during take off and landing it totally help with ear popping. helpful trick with kids.
Isaac is the best brother he's so kind pricilla and ace you two are great parents to of raised such sweet children x
I don't understand how some people can't comprehend that people with disability may have a meltdown or just struggle at airports or on planes (especially multiple flights)
I'm not disabled but flying does my head in. I can't imagine how difficult it must be for her. I'm just glad her family are this amazing and supportive
You guys are amazing parents. I’m a paraprofessional at a day time rehabilitation school for kids on the spectrum and the way you guys just block when she’s trying to bite and just gently remind her she’s gonna be okay while also communicating with each other, is just phenomenal. Abbey is so lucky to have you guys and you guys are lucky to have her 💞💞 a tough situation that you got thru as a family unit.
Even though she beat up Isiah he still held her hand and walked with her through the airport, he is such a great brother.
He is! I‘m so impressed by him! He‘ll be an amazing father one day!
Isaiah looking over constantly when the flight gets bumpy, my heart.
“The world is full of amazing humans” I think you guys are all amazing humans. To have a stressful and exhausting experience and still be grateful for the positive parts and say something like that, you guys are just amazing.
My son has learning disabilities and has been diagnosed as not on the spectrum but has what we like to call “quirks,” and there are days where I feel exhausted and out of patience. But seeing you guys restores me. Thank you. Abbie, you are an amazing young woman and an inspiration. Isiah, you are an amazing young man and a wonderful big brother. Mom and Dad, you are probably the best parents I’ve ever seen in action. Sending you all so much love.

Moment of appreciation for those awesome airport workers
Poor baby, she is so tired at the end of that trip. I totally get it. I feel like crying after long flights and connecting flights.
Oh, those air brakes ARE awful!!!! As someone with PTSD, they do a number on me. Poor girl must be so terrifying for her. She handled everything like a CHAMP! And y’all are so supportive and wonderful advocates. Your love gave her the tools to cope as much as possible. For most people the airport is a nightmare and they don’t face a fraction of the challenges of Abby’s world.

I'm so surprised on how accommodating the airlines and airport is for her it makes me so happy. I have a younger brother with Autism and when we flew last out of Dallas they were not accommodating what so ever like this. This is simply amazing! I hope Abby had a great trip!!
Hey, we are in thr middle of watching this video, we are parents to an autistic boy. Our son Ryan is 12 and fortunately for us is a great traveller. You guys are doing fantastic and to whoever said you should discipline Abbey has no clue....She did an awesome job. We are 9 minutes into the vlog and had to stop and comment.

The brother must be amazing dealing with her the way he is he’s soo amazing. And even how he might not have a lot of attention and I’d want him as my brother tbh
He is amazing. I said that on the other video too.
Isaiah is a wonderful big brother to Abbie
I have a son with autism who is 12 and a daughter who does not have autism, she is 11. To watch her with her older brother when he is having a meltdown is so amazing. When you grow up knowing how to treat others with respect this is the kind of person, like Isaiah you get☺️
In the UK sunflower lanyards are used in airports/travel to show that someone may need extra time and assistance passing through security etc
I'm in England I have a teenager with disabilities similar to Abbie except he is also blind. I never had any idea that is what they were for thank you for that ☺️

They are great, more & more places are understanding what they represent.
I've been watching your channel for a couple of months and all I can say is y'all are a strong family unite. Many people couldn't muster up the patience to deal with her no matter how much love in their heart.
I really have to say i admire how wonderful your son handles everything and is so kind. Great parenting mom and dad.
“Guess what we are gonna get on another plane and you can try and touch somebody else’s head” 😂😂😭
I would totally be fine with the kid trying to touch my hair, I understand their setting guidelines for her but she’s also being impulsive in a close proximity situation, I have an autistic daughter and it’s extremely hard (a complete understatement because we don’t have any help or family). However even before my daughter I was always aware of special needs & felt compassion for anyone & families living with it. It can lighten the load by a stranger being kind and joking or being nice because as a parent you feel the looks of disdain & discontent as if you’re expected to fix something can can’t be fixed. Like a blind person wearing a T shirt announcing “I’m blind” bumping into things/people & hearing people become angry about “your problem”, that’s how it feels.
I just wanna say, she is so pretty, and she is so amazing being able to handle as much as she can.
With complete respect. She's not imo
Badi Kawi someone had to say it
Well that's your opinion then. I think she's a beautiful young lady despite her condition (I'm sorry if I offended anyone by saying illness I didn't know it was considered disrespectful. Thank u to those who educated me so I could fix my mistake) and is doing incredible
Mayday Deathday i think shes cute too. people only think she isn’t pretty bc she’s not wearing makeup or has the conventional looking instagram face. she’s a little girl with unique features and she’s adorable 😕.
Mayday Deathday autism isn’t an illness though

You guys are a great family…so much patience and caring! I applaud you !!!! You are a beautiful girl Abby!
Seeing Abbie so upset broke my heart .you are all doing such a amazing job
The stranger that said “ she’ll be right “ I think I heard “mate” at the end as well, was most likely Australian honestly , they weren’t trying to tell you Abbi would be okay, we use it as a general comforting saying , pretty much it’ll be okay, she’ll be right mate stay strong. Hope you took it the right way :)
Not Australian mate, Kiwi lol
You reckon? I’m bad with accents have no clue
Yeah bro. I am kiwi and so the difference sounds pre big to me lol.
Whoever said it no matter the culture , was a sweet comment , Nz and Aussie slang is similar af
People in UK say that too
I am blessed that my autistic son loves to travel ! Meltdowns can take such a toll sometimes. You are doing a fantastic job with Abbie ! Much love, take care
Your family is an inspiration for all those in the same situation!!! You are blessed to have each other and we are blessed to have you in our lives as well!
My niece has autism & is non verbal. Abby reminds me soo much of her. You guys are doing amazing. it can be rough but beautiful all at the same time. I love this channel!!
"Part of me wanted to leave you on the plane" was the most real mom moment ever. We have all so been there momma!
You guys are awesome. Just started watching you and this past few weeks and I'm in awe of how you all work and blend fluidly as a family.
It might be a worse flight experience but you guys are awesome. Best family. Best parents. Love is radiating from all of you. Your are all doing a great job.
Her brother seems SO NICE I LOVE HIMM
I'm terrifed of plane turbulence, I'm impressed with Abby on not freaking out as much as i usually do. I have extreme anxiety when it comes to things that are out of my control.
Nicolette 20 yeah same it petrified me when there was turbulence on my way home from Italy with my school but teacher had to try and calm me down
If you think about it, plane turbulence actually helps the plane fly as you're flying against the wind it brings more air over the wings. Where as if you fly with the wind it can increase the stall speed of the aircraft. Think of turbulence as a pothole when driving a car
If this is your worst, you are so lucky. My son will not even get on a plane. Panics in crowded situations. You did great.
I saw by the date that this trip happened in 2019 but I have to say I am so impressed with your whole family but especially with Abby. I"m not even struggling with communication barriers that autism has given her and I get completely exhausted after a day of traveling and changing planes. Bless her heart. I would say she did amazingly well. You all deserve badges of honor. Bless you all.
Aw, that made me choke up when that stranger said, "She'll be alright." That's what you guys needed to hear and I was wishing the Fathering Autism fam was there to say to you. I'm glad that person spoke up. You guys did great, even Abby. I get cranky when I fly all day too :)
Her cry is so full of pureness it could make the whole world cry.
Thank you for sharing your flight experience. It really means a lot to see you guys keep striving thru the smooth/tough times. 🤗
Hi,, I totally understand, my son is 17, autistic & nonverbal,, it doesn’t matter what people do or say, she is picking up on everything!!!! Sounds from everywhere! Smells! Mom & Dads tension, with my son it seems to help if I stay REALLY COOL, and “pretend” his outbursts are ok 👍, do your best to not focus on her so intently, she is so pretty
I will never understand why people think we can discipline autism out of our kids.
I'm claustrophobic and that corridor puts me into anxiety attacks bad.
Completely agree.
because it's hard to grow up this kids 😁
Elaine Brock ignorance. Just ignore it.
That Gall No she can’t help it.
Despite it being hard, I love that Abbie gets to do all the things. People need to have real life interactions with all kinds of people and this is what allows us to build strong safe communities. Her smile makes me smile. Love the message of your videos and the strength of your family.
Watching this a year later and heard the kiwi saying “she’ll be right mate” was so cool. I just want to give you all a hug.
Thank you for this channel. You guys are amazing parents, and those of us who do not have autistic people in our everyday lives need to learn how to be more sensitive to the needs and challenges of others. I don’t think most people want to be rude. They just don’t realize what other people are dealing with in their lives.
You did fab! As a parent my child just cried for an hour as her ears hurt I couldn't do anything and as a mum it made it so stressful. Nice to see more people being understanding nowadays. I remember 20 years ago my sister was crying and the airhostess asked my mum to keep her quiet!
Dear sweet Abby had a long day. My 13 year old grand daughter is non verbal on the spectrum and having a blanket to hold and cover her head really calms . Hug family.
Awesome video, thank you for creating this. It gives us viewers a better understanding of what parents of an autistic child have to go through.
So loving, caring and patient. You guys are awesome!
You do as you feel fit! You’re doing a Great job with your daughter! You live with her 24/7 and know what’s best!
