Autistic Girl Had To Leave Restaurant

  • Abbie had to leave the restaurant after getting worked up. She does really well at handling a loud environment with lots of sensory input but she often gets to a point where she can't handle any more. I had to take her out of the restaurant for a little bit. It doesn't stop us from going though. She's come a long way.

    It comes up every time so I wanted to make sure I addressed it. "Autistic Girl" isn't a label. I often title the videos and descriptions to accommodate search engine terms. It helps our videos to be found by new people thus helping spread awareness and acceptance. Happy Thanksgiving #MaassSquad

    That lady is 100% right, people with special needs deserve to have the luxury’s we have. Yes we may be asking for behaviours by doing things but at- least we can go to bed at night with the thought “I’m giving them the best life possible”. I volunteer with special olympics and Work with special needs, and I strive to ensure that i make sure they live life to the fullest. There is not many people like this unfortunately in the world who will put in the effort fully. But I’m glad that we are those type of people. Abby is amazing, she has parents who work hard, who give her the best quality of life and I may not know you personally but I can see thru these vlogs that, that girl is one of the happiest girls and she loves her mom and dad and brother! You guys are such great parents and I hope I can continue to learn from watching you guys! ❤️

      Not being judgemental, I have an autistic child an being in pubic like that, with all the noise, is hell for her. It will never be something she'll get used to so why do it?

    • @KarlaAkins1
      @KarlaAkins1 Před 5 lety +7

      @@anneanne9009 That's simply not true. With time and persistence and consistent exposure, de-sensitization can occur. I have twins with autism. They started out quite severe, licking the floors and melting down everywhere we went. Now, they are amazing 24-year-old men who handle public situations very well. Now, that said, every single child is different. What one child responds to isn't what another will respond to. However, there are evidence-based practices that do help children with autism overcome fears and struggles with times in public. We all sometimes have a bad time in public. People with autism are no different. I've been in stores and restaurants before that I couldn't wait to get out of myself. It's not impossible and if Abbey is never exposed to these situations, she'll never get the chance to learn how to cope with her feelings. We learn by doing hard things. We don't grow if we don't try.

    • @anneanne9009
      @anneanne9009 Před 5 lety +2

      @@KarlaAkins1 We can agree to disagree, autism is a spectrum. Yes, their coping mechanisms can increase, they can go to school etc, but I think it"s a mistake to think you can 'normalise' them. Sure, they will get it, but it's hellish and kinda cruel really. Yes they cope, are they happy, are they okay and are they not living in a contant state of stress and anxiety? Who knows? I'm sure they know how you want them to answer that question.

    As a teacher in a self-contained autism classroom, I have to tell you how much I enjoy your vlog. I know what it's like for me as a teacher, but I don't think ANYONE who hasn't experienced parenting a child with autism can really understand what it's like for you. The amount of patience and love it takes me in my 8 hour day... you have to have exponentially MORE than that to do what you do. Thank you for bringing autism awareness out into the community in a very real, tangible, and honest way. Knowledge is power and education fights ignorance. Way to go!!

    I am so glad I found you guys.I have ADHD and often have trouble communicating and following multi step processes, even at 40mumble years old. It is a learning experience for me when you explain some of Abbys behaviors and how you are teaching her AND how she learns. In the past I have worked with disabled adults, all of whom had some brain related diagnosis. From Seizures, strokes, TBI's and yes, autism as well. This has explained some things I never knew and will help me in the future when I meet new people who have autism and other things that are all part of the same family tree.

    we took our kids to a restaurants yesterday on vacation. both of my kids are autistic, both are verbal though. One of them couldn't handle the sounds in the restuarant or even us talking to his sister to help her decide what to eat. I had to take him out of the restaurant for 30 minutes to calm down and read the menu in silence with his headphones on. the waitress was very patient with us but the table next to us arrived and ate before we got it together to even place an order. Days like that we tip double what we normally would. It's good to see Abby using utensils. Yesterday, I had to argue with my daughter to use utensils for pancakes in a resturant and the same for my son and a salad. My daughter told me that obeying social norms is optional and she doesn't need to use utensils if she doesn't want to. Well, I guess it's progress that she knows it's a social norm. Life is challenging, but we move forward and progress where and how we can. Thank you for blogging, it's nice to remember we're not the only ones going through these challenges even though I know the challenges are not exactly the same, it's still nice. My daughter is 12 and was diagnosed a year ago. My son is 10 and was diagnosed this past week.

    Love the Abbie throwbacks! I bought four ornaments and I am writing a little note with the ornament telling about Abbie, your family, fathering autism and what Mass Squad has become! Spread a little awareness in our gifts of Abbie's ornaments! I'm so excited! We are thankful for the maas squad family we have all built here and all the love they show your family and really do laugh with you and cry with you! True friends are hard to find and I feel very blessed at this group, brought together by a precious little girl and a father wanting to make the world aware of his amazing daughter and the blessings of having someone in your family with autism! Bottom line, I am thankful to Asa, Priscilla, Isaiah, and Abbie, a humble family who have taken a chance and put themselves out there to pave the way for their daughter and spread autism awareness and understanding and now we can jump in all over the country and create awareness! I'm so excited! Thank you for being you!

    The best pearl party group/videos I have found on Facebook are the Georgia Girls. They are autism/special needs moms and so helpful with questions and advice as well as great product. They also do custom tumblers and other products too

    I'm tearing up as I write this so if there are mistakes, please overlook them. I want you to know that I am thankful for you all for two reasons. Number one is that I am a Mom of three neurotypical kiddos (two boys and a girl) and one neuro-atypical son with autism so of course I love watching Abby grow and thrive. Reason number two is a little different. I lost my father in January of this year. I was his 24/7 caretaker for the last few years and I have really struggled to find my own soft place to land in my "new normal" life. Losing a parent rocks a person's world no matter what their age. After finding your channel, I have found myself smiling and appreciating life again. There is something special about Abby, Isaiah, and your entire family that just makes me smile. So please know that if nothing else comes of this channel, you have saved this Momma and as a result, you've helped my four amazing kids. After all, a kid can only be as good as the people who there to love them. Im finally finding my groove again and being the parent my kids need and deserve. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!
    Love, hugs, and prayers from my family always, Heather.

The shot of Abbie & Asa sitting side by side on that bench was so sweet! You both are such wonderful parents, it’s truly amazing. Look forward to your vlogs each day. 🌸💐😊❤️

    I love that you have people around you and a lovely community. I had to move over 5 hours away to find that sort of inclusion. This weekend past my son managed a large city cinema movie, The Sea Life Sydney Aquarium and a multi media interactive Star Wars identity Exhibition in a major museum for his 16th birthday ... He loved it and not a single issue. Amazing how far our Autsome Kiddos can go with the right people around them. The way you manage Abbie's moments when she is having a hard time ... I wish my son got that in those formative years. As much as I tried, I was not supported, and I always felt like I let him down until we moved and learned to support each other.

    I really have to thank you folks for showing the reality of what can happen when you take Abbie out and she has ALOT of difficulty handling whatever is going on. Most videos of Abbie I see the bright, smiling girl, who might be vocal/flapping hands, etc. And, I guess I then think that it must be easy to take her out. I see that it is not always like that. Thanks for showing... it... all! Much love.
