Because I've used both and I see the advantages of both. I have multiple tips. Don't cut the straws that short, using clear straws they're less visible when the cake is decorated or easily camouflaged. Baking/decorating tweezers easily pop those guys out in the event they're cut short. No cutting strange cake pieces needed. Then if your love is the scewer you can use the straw as a quick guide instead of sacrificing dowels. Use the straw to measure your length. Then use it to measure out your dowels before cutting. I also cut my cake dowels with a bread knife on a cutting board. I hope these tips help you. 💖
Excellent tips! Thank you, Becky!
@@AmericanBaker You're most welcome my friend!!.
I carry tweezers(clean and only used to place sprinkles or grasp straws) with me when it is time to cut the cake...i grasp the straw tip with the twreezer and pull it off.
Such a great tip! Thank you. ❤
You can use hemostats to remove the straws. But I would rather use dowels, since they can be composted. Plastic straws just add more plastic to the environment.
Thanks for the tip! I agree. I always use wooden dowels and I have never felt guilty about it. Plus plastic straws are quite difficult to find these days.
Great tips!! Very interesting video!!Thanks for sharing my friend..

Why do you cut the dowels and straws that short? Isnt it suppose to help with holding the cake? Please explain, thank you
The cake is supported best if the straws and dowels are just flush with the top of the cake. If they stick out above that will actually make them less stable.
@@AmericanBaker I think the question should be.... Why are we doweling a cake layer instead of a cake tier...
It's just a demonstration.
Ive done some cake decorating before but never had to make a cake tall enough for dowels until now. I clicked this to see what i should buy and immediately thought of tweezers as a solution to her problem. she didnt metion any other big issues for straws so im wondering why anyone would use dowels is straws are that much easier to cut. are there any other big issues using straws, please let me know.
As mentioned in the video, there are no major issues with straws and most cake decorators prefer them. They hold up enough weight for up to a 3 tiered cake. If you want to go taller than that I would recommend a central dowel through the whole cake to keep it stable. If tweezers work for you to help you remove the straws, more power to you. Good luck!
My question is do you use milkshake straws or jumbo milkshake straws for support tier cakes❤😊
You can use either one. It should hold the weight okay. Just make sure the straws are straight and relatively chunky.
Leave the straw a little longer, it will secure the cake better and easier to grasp.
Thanks for the tip
😉😉😉
Is easy ------- just use tweezers
Is that the secret?
