    Episode Notes:
    1. I used Kega Fusion for the Paddle Control games. Mega SG for everything else.
    2. As time went on, some of these appeared in Brazil on Tec Toy's reissues. They were, to my knowledge, built into the system and were not stand alone physical releases as they were Japan.
3, As I mentioned, there are a few adventure games that were never released outside of Japan. I can't read them to play them, so they were not shown here.
    4. Some of these games are getting really expensive. Solomon's Key and Rygar are approaching $100 these days.
    5. The Paddle Control only has a handful of games that use it. I own one but it doesn't work anymore.
    6. Sega eventually rebranded the Mark III in Japan as the Master System. It had the FM Module built in.
    7. Opa Opa is often said to be Sega's first mascot. I don't agree with this line of thinking. Opa Opa was only used in mascot capacity in Japan, so he was only Sega of Japan's mascot. Sega's first true company/world wide mascot was Alex Kidd.
    8. Rygar does NOT have FM support. I had assumed both Tecmo games had it. Solomon's Key is the only one of the two that has it.

This is an interesting topic, and there's still plenty left over for a part 2...though I guess it was understandably the more text-heavy material you left out. The real elephant in the room when talking about Sega in this era is that according to their developers they had a 3 month development limit on games (even for arcade stuff). And people being what they are, that meant the bulk of the work - sometimes nearly all - got done in the crunch of the last few weeks. I really think that showed in Sega's Master System games in a lot of ways compared to what Nintendo was leading with from '86 onward. Sega also cheaping out with no enhancement chips also left their developers with one hand tied behind their backs. And it's a damn shame, because looking at what ace devs like Compile were able to get out of the hardware, and some of the later PAL stuff, showed it could have blown the NES out of the water and even put in a respectable showing against the PC Engine had Sega let it. But, in the grand scheme of things, being forced to move on to 16-bit early might have been the best thing for them.

I mean I'm not trying to crap on the Saturn but the marketing was what really ruined it that and just flat out not bringing a bunch of games over for whatever reason. I mean I know people bought it but I didn't know a single person that ever owned a Saturn. That's not a joke that's not hyperbole I seriously never knew one single person friend, relative etc that owned a Saturn during it's lifetime.
Everyone I knew had a PlayStation every single person, that I knew that gamed at the time. I mean now it's totally worth getting one just for the Japanese exclusives alone but back in the day not only was it difficult to just find a place that sold the Saturn.
(The only place I'm sure sold them because I saw them there were Toys r Us and Sears) Had I known then what I know now I definitely would have invested in stuff like magic Knight rayearth and some of the other better games that have become both incredibly expensive and beloved.

@@franciscor390 Right on. The arcade and Mark III versions of Rygar are quite linear action games, with only a few, simplistic vertical travel areas in a given level, while NES Rygar is more exploratory, with lots of vertical areas and even backtracking being required in some places to unlock progression; not to forget the overhead view areas as well. MkIII and NES ports are graphically on par with each other, which is kind of sad since the SMS/MkIII has quite superior graphical capabilities over the NES.

I didn't know that Rygar was made for SMS; I definitely would have picked that one up in 1987-1988 if it were theoretically released then. The NES game is a top three title on that platform for me and I know just by looking at it that the SMS version will not have equal level design, but still it would have been a good game to play through. Looks better then the Lynx version.

Wasn't Woody Pop at least advertised as "coming soon" in the west even if they ultimately nixed any plans to release it here?
I swear I remember Woody Pop as being one of the games on the fold out poster-style ads we got with Sega Master System games in Canada circa 1987. *EDIT:* I checked a couple of dozen Master System games in my basement and couldn't find the advertising poster. Maybe the poster didn't come with the games but rather with the Canadian release of the Sega Master System itself?

I think as well, a reason that these were in Japan is you mentioned that they use the paddle controller. I don't remember that really being a thing in the UK. I've seen it in catalogues if you wanted to order one but I don't know anyone who owned one?

Master System was a funny console. I never heard of the system till the early 90s when my cousins would get them from garage sales and stuff. They still called it a "Nintendo" and 10 year old me didn't know any better. Just a testament to how little push the system for from Sega, or how big Nintendo was.

  • @jeremygregorio7472

I don't think that the lack of games killed the Master system. The Master system never really had killer app. Nothing like Mario and Castlevania. And at launch it was $50 more expensive. I bought one anyway because I remembered playing it at a Sears and it blew me away, but if it wasn't for that experience at the Sears I probably would have eventually got a Nintendo instead of a Master system just because the Nintendo is 50 bucks cheaper, and that would have let me buy one or two more games

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  Před 2 lety +3

Well, not having a killer app kinda goes hand in hand with lack of games.
