I don't think it's about them getting it, it's more about not having to worry about vocals and focusing on performance. I really think every artist should use playback on TV performances, to protect their voice. Each stage takes almost 1h to record, they have to perform again and again to get all the camera angles. Can you imagine having to sing every time? For me live stage is for programs with this purpose and for concerts.

@@charred6683 At Queendom the result of winner was quite fair because at that time there were still live audiences and participants were judged by the audience and judges who clearly saw the show live. Yeah there's fandom voting too but not as hard as RTK and Kingdom.
Meanwhile, at RTK and Kingdom last year, due to covid, there were no live audience, not even the jury. The funny eh sad thing huhu is that in RTK itself the assessment is determined from fandom voting (only in even rounds) and voting from other groups without any judgment from professional judges:') (seriously that's still hurt me seeing ONEUS almost fail 2x just bcs voting from other groups 😭)

Kpop gives such a realistic expectation where gullible fans think people can sound perfect while doing insanely intensive choreo. No one can, not even Mariah Carey. Which makes it hilarious when you see fans fighting whether their favourite idols sing live or not whem it's obvious they're not. If it's live, you'll know it. Their choreography is very intensive. Most groups that focus on performance are bound to use pre-recorded vocals/autone because there is just no way they can sing properly while dancing heavily. Groups like Mamamoo have choreos made specifically so they can sing live. They're not very intensive and will let the one singing only stand and just do a light dance. If you expect someone perfectly dancing while also singing perfectly, it's just impossible.

Okaaay there are some really pressed Mooomoo's in the comments so let's have a chat. We all know they're some of the best vocalists in the 3rd gen. Most of you complaining didn't even watch the video and it shows.
1st, Why r u lying that saying I claimed they lip sync when Solar tripped? Uh 14:19 I Literally showed it and said Mamamoo are the only ones singing LIVE
2nd, Claiming I Miss you wasn't autotuned? 20:25 I want you to honestly tell me you're not delusional?
3rd, Showing older live videos is valid. lol ofc they won't sound the same, NO LIVE PERFORMANCE SOUNDS THE SAME. You're listening for the effects on their voice. As long as their vocals are unedited, any clip of them singing is a valid comparison, I chose the same song for reference to make it easier to hear.
*Come on guys, I love mamamoo too. I praise them in almost all of my video's. I know our fandom is better than that.*
Also Some people are confused about lipsync + Autotune both being used simultaneously. YES IT CAN BE BOTH :) Autotune can be fed live into the mic like for Mamamoo's Decalcomanie or a Pre-recorded track can be autotuned later in post production like with OMG's Twilight.
Kind of crazy how different each stage is depending on the round and idols. I would assume the idols got a lot more control over their stages but you never know who called the shots. The way Lovelyz was treated by the public was so hypocritical. I'm also sad only Kei got a chance to show off her voice in her duet with Hwasa since vocally Lovelyz is right behind Mamamoo in technicality/ range. What was your favorite stages? Mine were probably AOA's cover of Egotistical, Mamamoo's I Miss You & OMG's Destiny. (Plus Yooas MJ dance)

one thing to note that their stage was all live and recorded multiple times. mnet combined prerecorded track and performance separately. so who actually was on that live audience recording all know that they all are capable groups. lovelyz actually gained many fans after the show.

      @MrLunea Před 2 lety +24

I have a question: did you take performances from Queendom from mnet yt site, or do you have recordings of how they were aired on tv?
Because I didn't watch Queends myself, but I watched Kingdom and I swear that the performances were significantly diffrent when they were on TV and what we got later on to stream (on yt). Mainly you can hear the difference in the breathing. At the end, almost every stage - on TV you could hear their breathing clearly (so mics are on) , and you could hardly hear anything on yt. So I'm not sure if you can just judge if someone sang or used autotune because they wanted to, or if it was mnet ordered to 'improve quality' in post-production.

@@MrLunea Mnets CZcams is the only one that matters, so thats what I used. Korea only had on average 40,602 people watching every week. Give or take 10-20 thousand more for Global viewers. However each performance on CZcams has roughly 10 - 36 MILLION views. So it doesn't matter what the live streamed version may or may not have sounded like. 99% of People around the world only saw the autotuned versions on youtube. Most people don't even know another version may have existed once upon the ethernet years ago.

    • @MrLunea
      @MrLunea Před 2 lety +5

That's not entirely true ... Programs like Kingdom and Queendom are all about increasing the popularity of groups. Those with a strong fandom from the rest of the world are to gain popularity in the country, and those with a lot of fans in the country are to gain fans from outside. That's why, the fanbases worked very strongly to share links where we could watched stream of TV version (e.g. twitch). I myself watched on twitch and the counter showed about 30k, and during the performances themselves sometimes the audience reached 70k. And there were at least 5 sepereted stream at that time. Additionally, on Twitter, later we could saw parts of preformances before mnet released them on yt.
Also, your narration in video is about how groups use autotune/lips sink/ live and not if mnet use postproduction autotune. So you kinda try to shows that it's group that cheating not mnet/TV.

@@CeCe1066 Queendom caused the members so much mental anguish that Woollim gave them a year-long hiatus. Idunno why some Lovelinus kept saying this was neglect when the members themselves spoke about how detrimental the malicious comments caused them and how they had to rely on each other to overcome those hate comments through vlives and other platforms like Jiae's radio. Imagine giving them work when they're not in the right mental state of mind...I just don't get it. Now, Woollim did neglect Lovelyz in the last year after they came back with Obliviate. I personally think this had more to do with prioritizing other artists who’d make more profit only because Woollim almost had to file for bankrupt a couple of times while managing just Lovelyz and Golden Child. The end of 2020 and all of 2021 was a very busy time for Woollim; Sunggyu was discharged in 2020 (everyone knows he’s Woollim’s princess so he's their #1 priority), they had to re-discuss contracts with Infinite from 2020 to 2021, Drippin debuted in 2020, Golden Child had become Woollim's highest-profitable group that had to bring in a lot of the dough so they were given quite a bit of work earlier on, Rocket Punch needed a comeback after their last one in Aug of 2020, Mijoo was FINALLY making a name and breaking through the variety scene, Eunbi and Chaewon's contracts with Izone ended in 2021 so Woollim had to use up what's left of their contract with Chaewon before selling it to Hybe/Source Mu., Eunbi had to debut, Woohyun was coming back from military service & looking for a solo comeback, etc. Lovelyz's Unforgettable album sold just under 40k copies (last time I checked) and 91% of the MV's views are unauthentic. Meaning only 9% of it is unique viewers and didn’t come from bots, ads, streaming. Their concept change is no doubt a gift to fans but unfortunately, Queendom had already tarnished all that they’ve worked for and accomplished up until that point and Woollim didn’t help by hiding them after Obliviate. Whether the girls were selling at Infinite and Golden Child's level or not, Woollim should have given them their last album. If Woollim had, Lovelyz would have most likely all renewed and it sucked that the girls feel so cheated that they collectively decided not to renew. Even now, Baby Soul who's stayed out of loyalty is nowhere to be seen. I know Soul is one of the less popular members and she probably wouldn't sell as much but Woollim just hiding her without giving her any work is so odd. Soul is so smart and she can definitely go solo as she's both a phenomenal vocalist and rapper, I just don't understand why Woollim isn't putting her rap into good use. Sorry for ranting towards the end >_< I'm just frustrated when I know Woollim used to treasure Lovelyz so much

    Yep you make solid analysis.
I'd like to make a side remark that the encore from a weekly music show ceremony is a flawed reference because nobody can be arsed to set up the in-ear monitoring channel just right; the performers might not even hear themselves for real. Of course badly set up monitoring can occur any other time as well, so well, we take what we can get. Apropos that, i bet this is a major reason we get such weird performances where mic is on but nobody ever sings.
There's probably also only one monitor channel for whole group even during normal weekly show performance with live singing, so one of the reasons why on stage, more than one person actually singing should be super rare. So harmonies = studio track.
12:51 finger too close to rear of grill of the SM58, i wouldn't find the nasal tone too surprising here. This mic can emphasise it at the best of times. In fact i positively hate this mic for this reason.

Encore stages are a last resort because yes the lack of ear monitor will make performing harder. BUT they don't have to dance so it's also easier. I'd argue the lack of dancing make it more accurate than not. The pros and cons of both cancel each other out.
Encore is still the only time you will ever hear a 100% live performance in Kpop now. There just aren't any live performances to show the audience an idols real voice not hidden in backtrack. On the flip side, Encore stages are GREAT for legit trained vocalists like Seunghee or Mamamoo here because they always always always sound better getting to stand and properly use their diaphragm.
At the end of the day delusional fans just can't scream and cry an idol sounds perfect dancing when they can barely project their voice in an encore just standing. it rips the Band-Aid off.

As live vocals are really hard while dancing, it's kind of understandable a lot of idols lip sync. Specially when thinking of how perfect they are supposed to be.

I did have a feeling the "live" performances these days are too perfect, I knew live stages are usually heavily backtracked and auto-tuned, but didn't know there were so many lip sync. I do think a lot of the idols are capable of singing very well but their companies didn't let them to show their real talent.
Fans always claimed that their idols sing live and what not, but I don't think heavily auto-tuned with a loud back track is considered "live".

I'm relatively new to Kpop (started about 2 months ago), and my first impression about live performances was admiring how there seemed to be a relaxed standard where any of the performers could just choose to sing along with their respective part in the live track if they felt like it. Until I saw this video, I had no idea that this wasn't an open secret, and worse, that the fanbases can be absolutely vicious when they realize that the so-called "illusion" is broken (and I put illusion in quotes because I still feel like the smoke and mirrors tend to be so apparent that they aren't trying to fool anybody). Here's to hoping that the fanbase culture can change a little to be a bit more understanding; this whole mindset of putting people to the chopping block for the slightest issue can't be healthy for any of the performers.

Actually the truth is almost all of the korean show touch up on the songs for broadcast purpose (I miss the good ol days when all shows & stages were aired without autotune. Guess this is what technology has brought us to...)
And for shows like this where they do covers, even on survival like Produce series, they always do a pre-record, especially since queendom actually released all the songs on music platforms. So when it's being broadcasted, mostly they just replace it with pre-recorded track. Especially with audience sometimes there'll be noises so they usually just mute the live audio entirely. At the end the only live audience can judge if they actually sang live on the stage.
Some of the live reference also is quite outdated, for example the lovelyz Ah Choo live are like few years before queendom aired date.
Honestly lovelyz has 2-3 members with weak vocals, but others have quite good live vocals, especially considering their songs are mostly super high pitched. I suggest everyone to search for their concert fancams online 😉 and mamamoo, word. Heard them in Kpop Concert live before, it's gorgeous af.

I think for the first season it was the same and I think you say it perfectly at the beginning: it's about the performance as a whole (even though I would say the audio tracks on spotify/apple music don't sound the same as the performance on the episode)

Hmmm.. for Mamamoo actually all of your references are from their old performances. Their performance at Queendom was the same as their live concert which is with a live band, and it's from fancam, so there's no glossing for their vocal and harmonization.
In my opinion, all the Mamamoo highlights errors in the video, have already been fixed by them. Maybe everyone says I’m biased because I’m a moomoo but I compare it with the fancam. Same with “I Miss You” at the 2nd round, was completely different from the original audio which was released years ago, in terms of their vocal but same with Yu Huiyeol’s Sketchbook (search it, it's well known to have background music that not overpowered the singer and dingo’s video their latest “I miss you” live performance).
If everyone is still not convinced that I’m not biased, then let me highlight one of the examples that I noticed became their weakness at their early debut (because I compared it with their latest ver.), Solar at their debut, and a couple years later couldn’t reach high note without bend over her body but now she can do it while still standing straight.
My point is that even though I’m a moomoo, I will admit if they really did it and won’t say a word, but compare it with their older videos, c’mon you must be smarter than that.
And fyi I’m not playing dumb or attacking the video’s maker just simply saying to do more research before making a video like this (not only for Mamamoo), I’ve been a Kpop fan for a long time, actually, I'm more familiar with 2nd gen and 3rd gen, it makes me notice that some singer from 2nd gen can completely different and better at their vocal now than when they debuted (since some group from 2nd gen are releasing new album now, you can really notice the differences).
A singer who is growing but doesn’t fix their habit by practicing, I would say it’s odd, and not only for Mamamoo, it applies for all the singers in the world, so if their weaknesses are still the same when we compare it with their performance 10 years ago, then no doubt that he or she didn’t practice

Wheteher its actually unfair or whatever you mean, but this is actually knowledge for fans so they dont just believe that if the idol always performs live, sometimes artist have bad days so their voices are also affected by that, and also this is a lesson for fans that autotune, lypsinc, or whatever, is not the wrong thing to do if the artist dont use it excessively.
but you are true tho, because rookie singer usually still need some exercise and lot of things to improve, and as time goes by and they often sing in many shows, the voice they have when they sing is really mature and good now.
