We Bought a Cheap V8 Range Rover
Vložit

- This week, Jack and Edwin make another questionable cheap car purchase, an unreliable classic V8 P38 Range Rover. They'll take it out on the road, see what it's like off-road on some of the UK's finest green lanes before taking it to a Land Rover specialist to find out everything wrong with our cheap 4x4...

This was awesome, Im glad the old girl has a caring new home, hoprfully she'll not decide to give you guys the boot like she did with me 😂
A pleasure talking with you about mine yesterday! See you soon when we try and fix the other one...
Scrap car lad only good to b rallyed in a feild till it blows and then brought to the scrap yard
@stephenroche3179 amazing comment, genuinely top notch. You must be so proud of yourself, good job champ 🏆
@@stephenroche3179do you, by any chance, work in a scrap yard? 😂
Andy is the MVP in this episode, what a laugh of a bloke, while still being obviously an expert. Such a joy to see.
came down here to say that, absolute geeza
Agreed!
Shame the content has gone dog shit since Alex left 🤣
Looking forward to picking up a £103,720 Range Rover for £400 in 20 years time
It won't survive that long 😁
I've got an 07 L320 V8. £54,330 new. 1700 quid now. But in great condition and runs like a dream.
@@hamstirrer6882 You may be right about the modern ones 😂
@@KravKernow Good job! “Kernow”, fellow Cornishman?
@@JAYPCARS Emmet migrant I'm afraid. But originally from Yorkshire (via London) so I do like a bargain. You know how anything land rovery is really sought after here (wish I'd kept my old defender) but range rovers are so cheap up country. Especially in cities that are about to introduce emission zone charging. So picked up my girl in the midlands. Made sure I was up to date with green flag before driving here home. But Steve Toyer reckons I got a real bargain.
Jack's presenting style has improved so much! He has really chilled! I also think they should get 'Uncle Andy' involved in Car Throttle, he is very witty, and seems like a knowledgeable, honest bloke.😀
I thought exactly the same. Since Alex left Jack's really come into his own and it's great to see!
Can we get his uncle his own channel? What a character
It would be like the anti Tyrrells's Classic Workshop
innit
And get him to take a look at the red Range Rover as well, see if the camera car is any better than the cheap toy.
that’s just a standard guy from Essex
Hey Jack, we need more of Uncle Andy! He’s seriously a cracker of a laugh, such a good bloke and does so well on camera! Certainly a high point of this vid!
That reaction to the total lack of beeps after turning the key was incredible 😂
Unrealiable??? Range Rovers are extremely reliable.... if you have the money to fix it... and maintain it.... and run it.... and tax it.... and insure it.... and to buy it. But otherwise fantastic cars
and have the time to chase the thieves that stole it
You sound exactly like High Peak Autos
@@sambarker7930 just needs a good buff and a car vertical history check
@@pjace2001 rude to talk about your mum like that
If everybody has the money then all cars are reliable?
Dennis from It's Always Sunny has elevated the status of the Range Rover.
"A starter car? This car is a finisher car! A transporter of gods! The golden god! "
THIS IS A FINISHER CAR
The p38 is my favourite range rover, still looks like it's meant to go off-road instead of built for the roads of alderley edge.
You guys should do a restoration on it, get it as good as you possibly can
Andy is my type of spanner man. No BS, infinite knowledge, good laugh and straight as they come. Top bloke..... he should have his own YT channel, as I'd watch it!
Edwin is such a clever bloke. Brilliant person for this amazing chanel I've followed for years
Andy needs to be on this channel a whole lot more. His personality is great and super happy! Please get him on here more, you could do all sorts of Land Rover stuff.
The water airbag button is in fact the amphibious exploring system. Some people forget to turn it on before taking it for a plunge
'Tatey one chief financial officer' aka T81 CFO number plate came with the rangy when I bought her in March 2019. She needs a completely new wiring loom to fix the intermittent electrical issues, someone before me had hacked the existing one to death. If you buy an old P38 take out the body control unit (BCU) and open it up. Check that the printed circuit boards are not coming loose, that is what kills the BCUs. She still needs front axle oil seals, shocks and bushings but then should be pretty well complete. Paint needs doing properly too. I bought it for when I regularly visited the UK to see my old mum. It was intended too as a project car. Renting a car for several weeks is expensive, and you end up in tiny uncomfortable stick shifts and I prefer automatics. The plan was to do the work myself, which I started by replacing all of the cooling system, changing the auto transmission oil and filter and a general engine service. That heater return pipe that you found, is metal and I hadn't noticed it was weeping. The front hubs, CV joints, rotors / discs, suspension air bags, air compressor, air conditioning condenser and filter are all fairly new. Kyle fitted them because I couldn't get into the UK with the travel restrictions. It also had a complete new exhaust system, pity some low life loser had to steal part of it.
Travel restrictions stopped me travelling to the UK until February 2022. As things happened, I used Tatey One for a few weeks until Mum passed shortly after in April. 2022. I then no longer needed the car and passed it to Kyle. Even with the cost, had Covid not hit, then it would have been cheaper and better than renting. If you fix the remaining issues, I think you will have a great vehicle.
I am delighted to see her getting a new lease of life and probably being cared for properly. Living outside the UK it would cost me way more to visit and sell the car than to basically give it away. Enjoy it.
At least Jack now has an air suspension conversion kit
I bloody LOVE a P38. Done a full engine rebuild on my 1995 4.6 in the last year. Your engine disabled issue is probably the micro switches in the drivers door lock. I had the same issue, change the lock assembly and itll probably sort it. Also, thanks to Andy for the top tip on switching off the annoying reversing mirror dip! 😀
Andy = legend. What a natural in front of the cameras
Can't wait to see this in the infamous Land Rover graveyard in a weeks time 😂
I looked it up and apparently it is a real thing, lol. Thanks for this one, my man.
Wish i had money to burn and time to get there and take home every one of those Rangies.
This would be a fun car to build into a sleeper, super quick and reliable, would be a huge series as well
Reliable?
Are you nuts, they barely stay together with the stock power
Although I miss Alex you still make good videos, just exciting seeing a new post coming from you. Also would be nice seeing an update on older cars, even if they're scrapped would be nice to know what's up with them. Keep up the good work!
What happened to Alex?
Hearing the various dash beeps takes me back to my old '96 P38 2.5DT, it had plenty lol. That looks a bargain TBH!
Love the P38, I’ve had mine for 11 years now and I’ve always done preventive maintenance on it so it’s been perfectly reliable. The beauty of owning an old Land Rover is that you know what’s next to go wrong because all the faults are commonly known so you can prevent it before it happens, simple. I certainly won’t be parting with mine.
Congrats guys!🎉
Very cool to see y’all get that sick GTI back on the road!
The P38 has been a favourite of mine for a while. It's peak range rover. It looks muscular and has serious presence. Just a shame so many have deferred maintenance and are showing their age.
>peak range rover
I’ve had a extremely nice example and still have to say they are pieces of shit. Love hate relationship. For me the facelifted L322 is peak RR.
Loving this format guys, and you three make an epic team 🤟🤟
I bought my £800 p38 2.5 diesel manual about 6 years ago. It costs about a grand a year to maintain. It's easy enough to work on. Just replaced all the air bags and EAS pump myself. 28mpg if you're sensible.
The engine disabled is the battery in the key not making contact. Happens on mine and you just have to wiggle the battery cover on the key and try again!
The remote on the key has the same frequency as WiFi so it can drain the car battery depending on where you park as it keeps the car awake.
For the eas if it ever starts locking out definitely get an easkicker which resets it without a laptop. Also if it doesn't go up leave the door open and car running so it can get the air tank up to pressure before trying to go up.
Excellent video again 😊 love these cheap car video! Keep it up 🎉
Wow! AJD! This takes me back, they fitted a Turner Engineering engine in my Series III .. YEARS AGO! Top bunch of blokes.
I bought a 1 owner 2000 4.6hse p38 here in the US for $2400. I’ve had it for a year, and so far the only stuff that has gone wrong are wheel speed sensors, cruise control, wiper motors, window motors, gauge cluster, sat nav screen, AC controls, every bulb, and it leaks from the radiator, front main, rear main, oil pan and valve cover gaskets. So it’s going great!Might trade up to an L322👍
Oh so not much then 😂
I think RR use Lucas for their electronics as other British manufacturers used to. They are notoriously bad.
The only stuff.... Lists half the car 😂😂😂
Mine only needs a head gasket, a transmission, the air suspension rebuilt (it works, but I think it needs new bags, and a valve block rebuild). The ac display is disappearing, the radio needs the code (the code I have no longer works). I think that will fix the problems…. 😂
It’s a 1996 SSE modified by Cameron concepts. It’s supercharged so it’s not slow (it’s not fast, but it was in 1996!). Probably one of the first ones they did. One of my favorite vehicles.
Oh boy this episode really took me back in time to when I used to own a P38! Such a beautiful trip down memory lane. Please post more videos of this lovely monster
Awesome vid , Uncle Andy what a legend.
More videos of this incoming please 👌
11:30 is that comb gibbet? if so that's like 5 minutes from me hahah, great video lads. Also me and my good friend go green lane-ing around those tracks in his defender, its great fun!
And a great episode too - really coming in to it's own now since Alex departed (who of course we all still love, but ya know what I mean!). Keep it up boys!
More Andy and Jack content please! One of your best vids this - very entertaining
Enjoyed that. Been daily driving a 96 P38 for 6 years & 60k miles now, love it!
Love the one-ten in the background at 15:01. A very rare sight in such original condition.
Loved the video, I think Jack's uncle Andy needs to have his own channel. Keep up the good content
Keep it coming ladds! Nearly legend status...
Love my P38, looking forward to more vids on CTs new purchase! Would love to know where that green lane is they went on? And more info on Jacks P38 as well!
Jack's presenting and on screen presence has really come far! He's a natural.
Great Film Thanks bro
Really enjoyed this one again.
So glad Edwin is in front of the camera. He is the highlight of this channel now 👌
jack and his family are all proper geeza's by the looks. good to see! :D
You guys are doing awesome on this channel lately!
You need to change the RF receiver for the alarm/central locking. Modified version is part number YWY500170 from Land Rover. Helps with the interference from phone masts etc
Rangeys have this uncanny ability to fix themselves. I've had 4 all bought 2nd hand 2x P38s and 2x L322s. I love em.
My dad's 2001 Jeep Cherokee has been evading the scrapyard for the past 5+ years. Been welded twice, multiple batteries, hadnbrake cable replacement and of course it is leaking pretty much every fluid to some extent. It's currently sat on the drive pissing out coolant lol
Stumbled across this video and it made me laugh as well as learning a thing or two 👍🏼
Great video guys! What you need is a Range rover classic next.. I've normally got one for sale
Edwin rocks! We want to see more of him.
How wholesome to see Jack and his uncle 😊
😂😂😂 brilliant episode lLEE, love that sound ❤️❤️👌👌
We have a lovely 4.0 V8 Range Rover P38 and it’s been really reliable 👍
So is mine. So far.
Is it used? 🤣
@@BlatentlyFakeName if I don't use mine weekly it will break. Gremlins move in when they're stationary for too long.
@@richardschofield2201 Sounds like my Lotus. Though it has Toyota running gear, so it's not so bad. Weirdly the only thing which has died on it so far is the GERMAN made throttle body
Yay more Edwin! We like Edwin. We like the other guys too
My dad had one of these as a company car in 2000, 4.6 V8. By 60k miles / 2 years it smoked from one tailpipe on start up, needed the coolant topped up every few weeks and came back on a low loader once a month or so and sometimes the cruise control would refuse to disengage which could be exciting. Loved it though, what a car!
I wonder if land rover management at the time of the P38 accepted as a company car? I know Jaguar didn't, when they were offered the xjs.
second favorite uncle 😆
I snorted at "i thought you said this was a calm one, Edwyn"
"yeah calm compared to the Paris-Dakar"
i love the new photography channel
love your videos!!! you should by lada niva and go offroading!!! I am restoring mine at the moment:)
Yes!!!!
The uncle Andy is a legend! We want him more often!
DONT LET THIS THING DIE!
I had a £900 freelander i had so much fun in it + front diff swap in a work car park and rear prop shaft removal in a pub carpark in bedford then went for a weekend holiday in Great Yarmouth blooming brilliant car, will allways have fond memories
Nice video chaps...... but the $90,000.00 question is the P38 Range Rover gonna be a classic like its original big brother???? The $90k figure is what I paid to buy a 1996 P38 Range Rover in New Zealand in 1998.... second hand with just 28.000 kms on the speedo..... also it was a 4.6 litre HSE in Beluga Black with leather saddle interior.... I still own the Range Rover but it’s in storage and totally stuffed!!!!
My daily drive is an 1990 3.9 V8 auto Range Rover in Camgoran brown!!! Again interesting video!!!! Course I could mention my 1972 suffix A Range Rover.... but that’s another story!!!! Regards Ian 👨🎤🇳🇿
Jack carrying it beautifully. Great show.
LOVE the P38! Had one back in 2010 for a couple of years. Used to go wrong just sitting outside my house.
Have an L322 now which is the same age as the P38 was and that gives much less trouble.
Gotta say - the Bordeaux gives me tingles in my special place 🥰😍
The ignition beeps took me back some years. My dad had two P38s over the years. And I've never heard the fault beeps afterwards.
I run my 4.6 (lpg thankfully) as my company car. 115k miles, cost me 1300 quid 3 years ago. I do lost of the maintenance myself which is mainly basic spanner work. Great support on Facebook groups now including electronics, parts (including keys) from independent supploers. To monitor the various computer modules i use a cheapo OBD2 reader for live engine data and RSW solutions software and cable for digging into the BECM, EAS, HEVAC etc. So far so good, i love driving the old girl.
A starter car? This car is a finisher car! A transporter of gods! The golden god! I am un-tethered, and my rage knows no bounds!
Awesome, love the cheap car adventures
Fix it lads! Upgrade the shocks. Do a general service. Throw some all terrain tires and you got a budget overlander that's a win
Love your uncle’s general vibe!
Just the right amount of Ethan in this video
Mirror dip CANCEL 😱 Nice ❤❤
Please don’t stop making all the content. I’m very much addicted currently
After watching this video, it inspired me to get my 4.6 P38 running again, (ECU lost sync with BECM)…
After some fiddling about with the relays, she is up and away….
I had forgotten just how superb the P38 was to drive, thanks for the motivation….
;-)
Comments like this are EXACTLY what I was hoping these guys would achieve with this video, I knew she'd be going green laning (and considering what a stroppy old bag she'd been the last 6 months I figured she might not make it unscathed) but I hoped so much that whatever the outcome, it might encourage people to save a couple.
I loved this thing til I had to use it daily, neither myself or the rangy were ready for that situation and I don't blame the car at all, I did my best considering how rapidly the faults escalated and if nothing else I got her to the next relay point in her race so she had a chance! 😂
Very best of luck with yours, I hope you get it sorted and can enjoy what these wonderful, wafty, satisfying barges can offer once again 🤙
Thank you for your reply
I have owned mine for 8 years now, but when the electric gremlins started to occur last year, I must admit I kind of “lost the love” and basically parked it up.
Thanks to this latest “Car Throttle “ video, seeing how much fun they were having with their P38 did inspire me to take another look at mine today.
Finally got it resynced again by using an old school technique, then spent the rest of the day just driving it around the back garden..
Thanks to this video, my Rangie is now up and running again, and the love has definitely returned for it….
;-)
@j.d.sunderland8113 absolutely INCREDIBLE news friend!!!
Just that reaction alone when the key was turned and it didn't show any faults said more than a thousand words :D My guess here is the system that registers faults, is itself, faulty
Nope, I can assure you it doesn't have any issues (that the information centre will tell you about at least 😂)
@@skyrocketautomotive670 In fairness, after having finished watching the video, it does look like it's in better shape than what a first glance would have me believe, knowing what they paid for it, with the exception of the electrical gremlins
All in all, i've seen worse cars for more money. Pretty good going for a near 25 year old £400 land rover😅
Hahaha, I’ve done the memory mirror dip everytime I connect the battery after storage
As much as I despise range rovers, this is easy the best content CT has ever done. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS
"it's not excessive though innit?". Yup, that's been the motto when designing and building them as well.
There seems to be a cereal stain on the dash.
I had to find out 🤷♂️
You guys are a RIOT!!🤙🏾🤙🏾
As for fuel, I consistently got 15-16 litres per 100km open road, 18 in the city 😂 as for the suspension, you can bypass the compressor and install valves instead, and pump them up at the service station.
Your Uncle is class, Jack!
Wish I had know it was so cheap before spending £3000 fixing my freelander!
Will you be doing mire videos about the p38, my dad has one which is dying quite rappidly st the rate he is getting jobs done, would be intereting to see some more comtent about it, i found the p38 bashing quite funny and fully relatable. 😂
Great episode, chaps 👍
There are some out there with over 400k running well. I think it has worst reputation than it should but then again I just bought one with 170k :) Save the p38!
Can someone please buy Edwyn a bigger t shirt haha - love the video guys!
Your idea of off-road is cute. I have seen rentals Kia's do the similar off-roading.
Jack is a top presenter and Uncle Andy seems a top bloke too!
Edwin joining the gang was such a good idea.
No one was interested… ‘til Car Throttle arrived! 😂
Looking forward to seeing the Golf
I'm so glad they were, I held out for SO long hoping not to scrap it. This is the best possible outcome for all involved
Except the guys
She's their problem now 😂
