EBAY Muscle Car Tubular Front Suspension - Cheaper Than Rebuilding Stock! 1957 Chevy Black Widow

- Like always, I was scrolling through the internet looking at car parts and found some discount, Chinese tubular control arms for my 1957 Chevy. These brand new control arms would end up being cheaper than rebuilding my existing stock front suspension. I couldn't believe it! I realize these are not top quality items. That being said, my experience with new name brand parts has been pretty bad lately. New parts broken right out of the box, bushing deteriorating within a year ect.
So I took a gamble on these Control arms and the installation was super easy.
They make front ends for most popular cars like 55-57 Chevy, Chevelle's, Camaro's, Mustangs ect.
Im excited to try them out and give you guys a review after they've got a few road miles under em.
Now tell me in the comments how I did it wrong.....
Also buy a shirt so I can buy more hood scoops:

Dan is the man, he shows you that you don't need a big fancy shop to make some bad ass hot rods
I try man
@@DDSpeedShop people in comments talk smack and never have a single hotrod. meanwhile you have shipping containers with cars cooler than they could dream of... you're doing just fine bud.
When replacing tie rod ends u should use a chisel or flat head screwdriver to spread the body apart then u don’t need the heat and it’s way faster
+1, that is the path I take. When there is room on the vehical, will chisel it open there to get it started turning there. The benifit to the chisel is you can stick a long pipe on it when wedged in the sleave if stubborn to turn.
Moog was my favorite parts . But it's like a lot of parts being sent out to be built cheap across seas. Looking good and have a great weekend.
It's sad to see that companies moved their production to China.
Coming along nicely.. Dan saves another Tri-5 !! This will be one Kool Hot Rod... Hey to all the Nay-sayers on your builds Go out and save some of these tri-5's yourself... Better than Rotting in the field somewhere, plus most have already been butchered in the 60's & 70's. You GO DAN!!!!
Agreed, George. Too many of these cars would up as figure 8 cars and demo derby cars back then too...
Hey Danny, A discount code for Rock Auto would be cool, plus you get a little money from it too. If we're going to buy something from them anyway then why not get a discount for us and give you a little at the same time. You should get as many of these as you can (only from good companies) as it would help both you and us. The new parts look great but why don't you give the frame a coat of paint when you have it apart? Would make it look cleaner - Oh yeah, not your style - lol - Later
Haha it might get just a little splash o paint.
@@DDSpeedShop , Brush on rustoleum works well. Keep up your great work.👍
@@327JohnnySS Rustoleum "Hammered Finish" looks great on frame and inner fender parts. Thin a quart with a splash of mineral spirits, load your gun and spray away.
@@paulhare662 Yes true. It depends on how pitted the frame is. This one is pretty good yet when you brush it on you have no overspray and it will treat the rust and fill in any imperfections. Yet I understand that he is not going for a show room effect. A very great channel definitely.
Winter is coming next week. I enjoy watching you work.
I did rear brake lines, and cylinders on the Dodge today. I could only play a video of it if I muted it. Alot of struggling. Thank You DDSS
Welp you went and did it AGAIN!! saved another one from the crusher and, it used to be a 4 door. Great job THNX
Watching you always get me motivated to work on my junk!
And yes Moog frt. End parts were the best on the market when i was still doing repair work . The shop i worked at was all under car repair from tires to frt.end , brakes and drive line .
When I rebuild one of these steering boxes, early VW boxes, or similar I've gone to filling with john Deere cornhead grease. Very smooth operation, but of course that's with new seals and the box brought to spec. If you're pulling a box apart its good stuff.
Used a fair amount of it myself. It works really well even in gear cases situations where seals are oil leakers.
Ah. Good to know. Thanks!
I used them on my 67 Camaro workout good but I did change the ball joints to Moog. Better Chinese quality. LOL
Haha high end junk
Coming along great Dan. This is going to be a good daily driver. Can’t wait to see it going down the road. Take it easy see you on next one.👍😎✌️
Any discount code would be a good one, but a DD Speed Shop code would be the best! Love what you are doing to the car, thanks again for working hard to keep up entertained and educated.
Holy crap i have been watching you for over a year now and I think that was the 3rd or 4th time that I have seen you use a tape measure lol love it 👍
Haha I don't use em often
Sure if you get credit for the rockauto sale. I get the same long digit code for my orders. I get all my early beetle stuff from them when I can, helps with keeping cost down on my "fleet".
I'm 63 yrs. old and I haven't seen those screw in coil spring spacers since I was 16-17 yrs. old. I tried some when I was a kid and they didn't work then. They would turn in with a half inch extention and rachet. Those were the days. People throw off on China parts, but those upper and lower control arms work really good. I put some on my friends 68 Firebird and today they are still doing good. Nice job, Thanks for taking the time to show us the ins and outs of the tri 5 front end Ronnie.
Hi Danni and Dan, Dennis here from Filer, Idaho, USA. Wishing you both a Happy Thanksgiving. And a huge thank you all your shows. I am glad I found your channel. Thank you again.
Thanks for the support!
Great job as always Dan won't be long you'll be on the first test drive.
It's been 5 years . Same A-arms , and bushings, setup on my 57. I've had no problems .with 6000 miles. Keep up the great work DD speedshop dude...
Great progress Dan...its amazing how much you are getting accomplished with the shipping and availability of part problems right now.
Yeah. Its a constant battle
I always fasten my benches to the wall. But that's just me. :)
Keep posting, Dan. I'll keep watching.
Great work like always..... Cant wait to see the interior in and you driving it soon. Shout out to you from México bud.
Hey Danny keep up the good work looking forward to seeing you drive this 57.
The amount of mileage you'll put on the "Widow", the chassis parts will last for a few years or when you decide to sell it And if that doesn't work, put a tube of Right Stuff in your grease gun and and give er some, they'll never wear out! (kids, don't try this at home).
Haha
Mike: The first time I thought of that a few days later in an old car magazine I saw an ad in the back of the "little ads" for a kit to do just that! Never saw it again!
Lookin good, gonna be way cool Dan! Great job as usual my friend!!
Looks great , definitely more header room with the LS ! Rock on , Dan !
Yeah. Its a nice fitment
Dan , I am like you. I like brand new parts on old junky stuff too. The widow is starting to look wicked. Love the new front end hardware. Great job. Good video. It’ll be cruising soon.
👊😎👍👉🇺🇸🇨🇦👈
Dan keep up the good work building cool ass cars . i like what you do .
Back to the good music! Nice work as always Dan
Looking Good!! You talked about the inside am having my seats redone on my hot rod(ford Excursion both front seats $2 200.00 ) you can can put a bunch of $$ inside easy
I know what you mean about Moog these days. Got a few bushings recently along with some sway bar end links, and the welds on the links are absolute crap. Great job on the Widow so far, really enjoying the build! Get that thing out here to Alberta next summer!
Dan you are a hard working man you put what you want to get done you go for it really like your videos love how your woman supports you she is very talented we just love you guys, all the way from Charlestown west Virginia.
Thanks for the love!
Great video glad you posted keep them coming thanks
Hey Dan, It's coming along faster then you thought. You'll be driving before the snow starts to fly. Looks great so far. Wish I was young again so I could build another car. See you in the next video.
DO NOT USE THE "S" WORD UNTIL DECEMBER!!!!
i don't know how old you are but , im 65 and i'm building several old cars .. don't give up now .
@@60chevyjim I'm 64 till March. I would love to work on another but the back went bad in my late 40's. After my first surgeon promised me after surgery I would be like new, he screwed my back up worst. New surgeon wants to operate on me in two different spots to fix what the other surgeon did. He can't promise anything but 50/50 chance. So, I pretty much done. Good luck to you.
@@fredgillick3071 man i am sorry to hear that , i wish you the best what in what ever you do . jim
Dan I'd love to see a review of these cheap chinese control arms after you start using the car. You've rebuild enough factory front ends and interested in your opinion on how these compare. The car is really coming along!
Yes please!
U got it!
Haven't read all of the comments but I use a dielectric grease on spark plug ends come off easy also seal out water, eliminates tracking an miss fire.
Dan the man!!! Lovin the projects as usual. A discount code for rock auto would be wicked. Keep up the good work man.👌👌👌
I used the CPP system including the sway bar (which I installed in my driveway with the car on it's wheels) I also installed the CPP 500 Steering box which just blew me away afterwords with the car handling like a go cart!!!
I have the 57 Chevy 4 door hardtop (all 4 doors) with electric windows and as I have owned this car for 18 years there are many many mods done over those years!!!
Well Dan, if you will, look at how much you're already done! This is going to be one sweet driver!!
I love all your cars Dan but this one has to be my favorite, I love black widows to begin with but this one is packing a punch lol Awesome video series as always
Yrah. I'm.stoked on this one big time
Doing another great job as usual looking great 👍
Awesome black widow build lots of great info about front end
Hell yeah a discount code would be great! Wish I would have had one this summer when I fixed my son's focus.
Good job. Front end will ride nice l see a lot of tabular control arms on fox body GTs. If ur going to make a change that's the way to go 👍🏼😎
It's taken me 11 hours to watch this!!! Unusually busy for a Sunday!!
Good problem to have man
That first-person mode was fun. It’s like playing a build-a-car role-playing game. 🤪
Invest in a front ARB Dan. Makes a big difference. Yes please on the Rock Auto discount code.
Looking forward to seeing the end result.
I hope the control arms work out for you. A friend bought some and regretted it soon after. Different car and a couple years back so maybe no big deal. I have my fingers crossed they work out just fine.
Cool D D thanks for sharing your video
Got the same control arms for my 57. They're bad ass.
was about to buy a bushing kit but for the cost and time savings these seem like the best way to go.
Good Vid 👍 Dan !!
Great progress, Great vid!!!!!!!!!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍
pipe wrenches are wonderful, versatile tools
Your videos have came a long way since I started watching years ago... Doing good as always and yes we would use the Discount code for Rock Auto 👍👍🇨🇱
Awesome Dan dd speed shop 🤘
You definitely need to get that discount code. Cheap parts for even cheaper is definitely a win.
I am doing brake lines too! On an F150 I am trying to sell, and a friend's beater Gran Prix. The brake and fuel lines are the first thing to rust out up here. Gotta do some insulation in the shop this year so I can work over the winter, too much stuff to do and no warm months left.
Yeah rotted lines r part of my every day life haha
Can't beat that price, maybe the ball joints are junk like people say or people maybe didn't grease properly, time will tell. Another solid video Dan
You driving something with wipers is almost hard to sell. Happy for you Dan, should allow you to do another build and finish it before driving it thing. Once they start, its time for you to see it do a burnout. I was just thinking, when this is done, what is the next project
D & D, Hey Dan, I agree with one of your subscriber's on the Moog comment, when I can get them I would rather use Moog....be safe, God Bless!!
Great video. I can see a trip around the block soon……
Hopefully!
Love the videos and a Rock Auto code would be fantastic!
I've been happy with the cheap chineese heads I put on my SBC 400 10 years ago. Sometimes you get a good deal.
Great video man
yes pls to the rock auto code, something easy to remember vs the 37 digits you gotta find each time!
Haha right!?
I'd love a Rock Auto code!! Your stock is going up my friend
Super video!👍👍👍
I have same upper control arms as you have. The stop’s disintegrated after only a few years. Chinese garbage material. I’m looking for rubber stops now. Same will probably happen to the lower control arm coil pads.
I did a 100% moog rebuild on my 79 Gmc square half ton. The chassis shop in spokane wa. Could not align the it because of rhe Chinese parts Preedys was the 80 plus year shop that was co fused by the parts I put on ot
Lookin' good Dan.
Looking good, very cool!!!
I tried to order upper rear links for our Jeep Patriot from Rock Auto; the shipping was INSANE! Ended up ordering FREE from Amazon Prime.
All the youtube channels I watch, they complain about the gopro's. I know not to get one of those.
Another great video.
For the love of god man !! Put down some cardboard to slid that fronted on hahahaha looking good Danny keep it up brother!!
27:04 looks like you need some good pipe wrenches to work with. I don't know how many times a fancy smancy tool was called for but good old pipe wrench did the trick.
BTW the black liquid (electrical) tape is great for protecting bolts/nuts. I'm sure same as plasti-dip.
1 whole video on holley install for those of us wanting to try it would be cool
Can’t Waite for next vid
they make a bearing kit for that idler arm called a poor mans power steering it replaces the rubber bushing with a bolt ad needle bearings makes steering a whole lot easier
I used one of those upgrades on a Chevy 2 that I had years ago. Chevy 2 Only was the seller. Worked great, 120,000 miles with no problems.
A discount code from Rock Auto would be great. Very good price on your suspension upgrade
Coming along great!!!!
Speaking French Canadian Dan? 'Nu Guud' Bolts Can be A Pain! LOL!
Pipe wrench works good on those tie rods
The way the radiator was mounted at beginning of video I thought you were doing a Boosted Lifestyle setup LOL
Haha
Next time instead of Visegrips use a large flat screwdriver to remove split sleeves. Pliers squeeze them tighter to the tie-rod ends but the screwdriver opens it up and lets it come off easy.
Great video
Sounds odd..... but I'm watching this (and all the others) with the eye of a Ford. I'm doing a couple of 58 Ford (cars) and parts for them are pretty rare on the "go fast" side. I know, completely different animals, but a lot of it is pretty close. Like getting around that steering box that's in the same place (ford & chevy). Totally dig your stuff & can totally get a feel of what I might be getting into with this....... even though mine has the "oval" instead of the "bow tie".
The good part is even if those ball joints are junk, they are bolt in so it wont be quite as big of a deal to change them. I have a 327 in my 55 bolted in the stock location with stock 55 engine mounts. I am running 2 1/2 inch ramhorns with no clearance issues with the steering gear.It looks really close but there is more room than it first seems. The downpipe on the passenger side self clearanced itself with the steering linkage. It made a dimple in it at full lock.
I love the self fixes
@@DDSpeedShop Me too,I hate re doing things.
Yes. I have bought from Rock Auto before and will again. A discount code would be cool. Thanks.
Ever thought about Cutting the Front Chassis (Frame) Legs off and Replace with Lighter Weighted and Tubular for a Front clip
Only thing i have found on urethane parts are the tend to Squeak like heck if you don't put some grease on them .
Agreed
Cool what parts you didnt buy in that kit you had on a shelf how nice. Went together easily how nice and it seemed like you enjoyed it. I noticed a lot of sirens in your videos lately the Canadian Mounties must be cracking heads on people for not wearing their mask that do absolutely nothing at all. LOL😣 And thanks for another cool video. I hope your parts come in.
All I have to say is dam… the tumbler arms look great..the car is coming around nicely, (Question) your home made spring compressor looks very handy
The compressor is a life saver
How many times did you bang your head on that air vent tube on the drivers side and have ever lit your hair up with torch lol I had little fire going from the torch bent down to blow it out and lit my hair up hahaha looked like you were about to couple times lol 🤙 love your vid man
Happy Thanksgiving, up there.
DD Speed Shop discount code would be nice. It would give your channel a little more exposure too
My 79 gmc is already walking to the right
Looking good bud
Thanks man!
