Paul Pierce and Kyle Lowry's last-second battle to determine who's going home needs a deep rewind

- The 2014 Nets and Raptors had a lot in common! They both have a history of terrible records. They both started the year in an embarrassing fashion. And they're both facing elimination in the first round of the playoffs. Seeing as how it's at each other's hands, I don't think they'll be bonding anytime soon.
And besides, their differences are more defining. The Nets spent lavishly to boast one of the best (in theory) rosters in the league. Their starting 5 at the beginning of the year was Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Brook Lopez. That's 5 all-stars.
Whereas the Raptors have a quiet payroll that supports one all-star (DeMar DeRozan), a bunch of young guys, and a point guard who was their second choice and they tried to trade away. (Kyle Lowry)
To find out how these similar but different teams got this win-or-go-home battle, we have to rewind.

The rapid decline of Deron Williams is insane to anyone who watched it in real time.
It still boggles my mind how he went down hill so fast. From what I remember he never had a serious injury. I know he had those ankle problems but he was always a big guard who was good at using his body. Idk I think after he got that big contract he just didn’t want to play anymore
He really could have been top 5
Reminds me very much of Isaiah Thomas. One year he was a bonified superstar and the next he was a rotation player.
@@Aaron-ud8md IT tore like everything in his hip tho, kinda just seemed like Deron Williams didn’t care once he got the money
MAN….
Ah yes the first major heartbreak for Raptors fans during the DeMar era pre-2019. Right before LeBronto, there was Paul Pierce who was killing the Raptors but for only a couple years.
The Vince Carter era doesn't count?
@@johndebono1870 Just edit it. During the DeMar era I meant. My bad.
@@AirRusher1992 All good, I kinda envy Raptors fans who didn't have to deal with the pre-Masai agony.
I swear Pierce switched teams just to see how many teams he could mess up my raptors with
@D Bechtel remember that dunk on bosh where he clearly kneed him in the dino eggs and then mean mugged him 😂😂 clasic
The Nets would make a fascinating collapse episode. Their all-in push fell apart and gift wrapped the Celtics their core of Tatum and brown, and when they managed to get a big 3 of KD Kyrie, and Harden, it only lasted 16 games and they had to blow it up too.
2x in 10 yr span
The sad thing is there is a real argument the Nets were never good enough with either Pierce and Garnet or KD, Kyrie and Harden to warrant a collapse.
@@johndebono1870 Huh? They were 13-3 in their 16 games together, and up 2-0 against the Bucks without Harden, then Kyrie got injured. I watched that whole 2021 season, yea they WERE good enough.
@John Debono I think you could do a mega Collapse (like the Cavs rewind) or a 40 min video if you did "The Brooklyn Nets", all the big trades from 2012 to now
Can’t collapse if you never fully “stood up.” It’s like saying they were knocked off from being king of the mountain, but they never even made it to base camp…they just kept falling down like Jack and Jill (end mixed metaphors…)
this was the first taste of playoff pain for this raptors team with demar. remember it like yesterday
It's a shame. I like DeMar. He just never adjusted to the modern game. At least he can pass now, and he'll shoot it occasionally. A fun player to watch in his prime, though. Such an athletic freak.
The number of draft picks the Nets gave up for that one block is still unbelievable to this day.
It was because their Russian owner back then bought the team and mandated that they would win a title within 5 years. This matchup came in year 5. When you have a boss like this who doesn't understand that "No, that's not possible" is a perfectly valid response, sometimes you spend a ridiculous amount of money to learn that it's a perfectly valid response.
@@imightbebiased9311 The 2010-11 season was his first as owner, this matchup was from 2013-14...which was his 4th. I agree with everything else you said...just worth noting that in theory he did still have one more season to come through on that promise. I'm surprised he didn't mortgage the Barclay's Center to bring in a few more old dudes for year 5 😂
@@zeked4200 Weird, I thought he bought 'em in 09. :D Thanks for the clarification.
@@imightbebiased9311 he’s still better than our current owner
I been saying the same thing, The Nets gave up a lot and also were $90 million over the luxury tax I think and all they had to show for it was taking Toronto to the last play of game 7, what a joke
This is a tough block to watch, but man… seeing Kyle break out in 2014 to become the East’s most well-rounded PG for a 6 season stretch that ended with a ring was great, and now he’s the savvy vet proving he’s still got stuff in the tank ala Pierce here.
oh yeah he was well rounded alright
@@GuntherBovine I mean, yeah… if you want to make the obvious “thicc” joke, it’s on the table. But Kyle’s game was well rounded. He could drive to the rim & get buckets alongside foul calls. He became a better three point shooter. His defence got better off-ball, picking the lane for steals & putting his body on the line by taking charges. Lastly, he elevated every player he played with, something he’s still doing now in Miami these playoffs. His intensity & mentality rubs off on other guys & they all buy in. He was the leader in 2019. Kawhi was just a fun guy who needed Kyle as much as Kyle needed him.
@@codyssmith73 lmao I like how you defended Kyle here with facts bruh. 😂
That 13-14 Raptors squad really became the foundation for everything we eventually became in ‘19:
- Greivis Vasquez turning into OG & Norm
- JV turning into Marc Gasol
- T-Ross turning into Serge
- And of course, DeMar and Poeltl (who was also a 1st rounder from the Bargnani trade) turning into Kawhi and Danny Green
Thanks for this bittersweet rewind
Pierce has been relentlessly clowned on post-retirement and rightfully so, but his post-Celtics heroics (especially with Washington) were fun as hell to watch. I called game is an all-time great NBA quote
Pierce with Washington was exactly what Allen was for Miami. He was great in that role, perfect for that team at that time.
Why? Was it really crazy for saying he better than dwade???
Why are you trying to hurt Raptors fans today!?
I will say seeing this moment from Kyle Lowry makes the championship that much sweeter.
Man left it all on the court for us every single game and turned our franchise around.
He was so pissed his shot got blocked in Game 5 by Draymond he scored 11 straight to start Game 6.
@@codyssmith73 Lowry really matured after he lost his spot to Calderon. Both he and DeRozan should be HoFers in my opinion. Both will certainly have their numbers retired with the Raptors.
Paul Pierce way too underrated. He has had so many clutch moments.
Paul Pierce and Charles Barkley are the most actively disrespected and underrated legends in basketball. They spent portions of their careers matching LeBron and MJ, respectively
That’s the truth
Pierce the only guy to get the best of Lebron and Kobe. Legend.
It had to have been the fact he was more a crafty guy with the ball than overly explosive/flashy. He still had some hops, could hit any shot, get to the spots he wanted to, and never shyed away during crunch time
@@MPHswayze They're post NBA careers as analysts has really tainted the view of them for many people. Both have said some ridiculous things that it makes some people forget how good of players they both were
So thankful for 2019 to make this just a step on the road to history.
Though this still stings a bit.
I'm not a Raptors fan, but I always liked DeRozan and Lowry. Lowry is the type of player that every franchise wants. Kind of ironic that he plays with Jimmy Butler now, because they're very similar in that regard; they'll do whatever it takes to win.
I remember watching this game like it was yesterday. I was 13 at the time and was heartbroken. It was all anyone could talk about at school for a week. Made the championship in 2019 all the more sweeter
This series is one that can be aptly described as a "battle of mid" lol.
Thank you for covering this!!
Crazy how the Vince Carter game 7 loss to the Sixers was not mentioned. Being a raptors fan was pure heartbreak until 2019
You got to give Clara more rewind videos. First m, she’s always amazing no matter the video. Also, I really am not a fan of that other guy they added in the last couple years
Literally no one cares what you think
Wonderful editing and narration! Very enjoyable.
You guys are killing it 🎉
Not talked about enough in this was how amazing Joe Johnson was in this series.
This video was very interesting and I loved the narration.
I watched this as it was happening in 2014 I believe maybe 2013 . Missed lay up at the buzzer. Awesome that you made a video about a game watched live ten years ago. Thanks sb
I'll always remember this moment. Pierce's Nets tenure was forgettable, but we'll always have this
Thank you for listening and not putting an in-video ad in this one. It's much appreciated
LOVE when these rewinds are for somehting idk about or don't remember at all
The only good moment from the Billy King era for the Brooklyn Nets.
This was a fun Raptors season and a great game to watch!
man I remember this like it was yesterday 😭 last time I wholeheartedly enjoyed a basketball game as a Nets fan
Not sure why I would want to relive such a vividly painful moment from my past...but lets do this!!
This did deserve a rewinder, I didn't remember what happened.
Good night and good game.
Kansas vs. Memphis. 2008 National Championship. Mario's Miracle deserves a Deep Rewind.
Oh boy am i happy to get a new rewind episode
This is great,i even forget that I know how it finished and watch it like it was for the first time
Lowry is hof for me. His clutch gene is unbelievable.
Also, in one of my ultimate 2k redraft runs, him, post injury Drose, and 313 Blake Griffin spearheaded my team to the finals, only to lose in 6… incase you were interested.
He should have more accolades than he does IMO. Deserved at least 1 more All-NBA team, never voted All-Defensive Team despite being one of the best at the PG position, especially off-ball… and you cannot tell me he hasn’t earned recognition for the NBA Hustle Award. He’s all hustle!
@@codyssmith73 also he deserved all thicc team aswell. Like DAMNNN.

YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!
One of the most underrated and clutch players in the history of the game. #34 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Ouuuuuuuu didn't think this would make the cut!
That block is the last good thing to happen to the Nets
Pierce always commin up Clutch
As a Boston fan it was hard to see Pierce & Garnett leave
Morris y are the best thing that this brands haves ❤❤❤
Ah. A classic of Derozan Lowry era pain.
thank God we won a championship after all that disappointment. Seriously thank God, not everyone even gets the opportunity. thank you God thank you Jesus.
Yall gotta do a game 7 2021 kd shot one and how it affected the nets basically ending thw glory😊
Also it is crazy that this game was at 1230 on a sunday. The disrespect for both teams
Pierce killed the raptors a year after with the wizards, Pierce had the most point scored by a raptors opponent prior to Lebron breaking the record 2 or 3 yrs ago.
It’s still weird seeing Paul Pierce in a Nets jersey and also because he was there for one season
You gotta review Armando Galarraga's 28 out perfect game
Alright here we go bring on the pain
Please do a rewinder of Marlin Jackson's interception in the 2006 AFC Championship that sent the Colts to the Super Bowl!
Man I remember Dwight being on the fence between Brooklyn and my Rockets that 2013 summer
Also the Raptors really misses Lowry now. As a 25 years Raptors fan, we took him for granted. Last time Lowry was with the Raptors we did amazing with mout kawahi.
Look at Miami Heat, along with Jimmy, Lowry never fails to boosts the teams morale.
Lowry's last season with the Raptors was a disaster and he's an incredibly minor piece in Miami. He's old. Majiri let him go for a reason, at the right time.
@@jamesdrummond7684 my mistake i thought his last season was 2020 where he forced the game 7 against celtics. but you're wrong about Lowry not contributing in Miami. Jimmy already mentioned how Lowry plays a big part morale wise. Lowry is probably the only player in the Miami team now with Finals experience. Not taking account on knowing who else has it within the team.
@@jamesdrummond7684 He's most definitely NOT an "incredibly minor piece" on this Miami team!... -_- ... He literally leads the 2nd unit when Jimmy's on the bench catching his breath, which is arguably THE MOST IMPORTANT role in Miami's success or failure if Jimmy is playing well / up to his "Playoff Jimmy" standard. If the team falls apart when Jimmy isn't playing under Lowry's leadership THEY LOSE, GUARANTEED! Tell everyone you don't actually watch basketball without telling everyone. xD
ERIC LINDROS VS FLYERS ORGANIZATION
Do Bautista's bat flip next
Two of the picks the Nets traded the Celtics became Jaylen Brown and Markelle Fultz(#1 pick used to trade back to #3 for Jayson Tatum)
You should do the Lebron shot from the Cavs Bulls 2015 series
0:09 The Toronto Sun had a pullout sports section cover of "Raptors vs. Dinosaurs with Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett on one side lol (and the next year they had Paul Pierce photoshopped as Gandalf when he was with the Wizards lol)

Please make a nets video of the "big three" disaster and how Kevin Durant's toe being off the line would have changed a franchise m
Demar Lowry Era , The start of having a playoff run with Dwayne Casey as their head coach , moretheless their playoff run was nothing about getting Eliminated by Lebron James at the East Finals , Or Semi Finals.
Masai knew that firing Casey and Trading Demar was their good choices , since Demar is nowhere being good at the playoffs .
Likewise , i'll give my efforts on Masai trading Jonas for Marc Gasol. He deserved that championship , and Ibaka aswell , he also deserved it.
Facing against 7 games , a do or die series from the Superteam Nets and the Young Raptors , Pierce made the clutch winning block against Lowry and faced the miami heat. But , this team was old and can't make a deep playoff run with their worst trade ever .
shows how much the nba has evolved in a short time. patterson left his pick trying to get open too close to the weakside only to leave lowry in a 3v1 with no passing options. screens matter. spacing the floor matters.
When Lebron isn’t killing Kyle, there’s always Paul Pierce to finish the job.
Not the rewinder about the Nets that I expected.
I did not remember that Toronto set up on the wrong side of the court with no timeouts to adjust on the final inbound play. That was a major error by Duane Casey. He did a great job developing the young Raptors players but unfortunately had a few too many coaching errors in the playoffs.
Also god awful play by lowrwy god damn 😂😂😂😂. He had 3 open dudes (not at the dame time, but at diff points of the last 6 seconds) to pass to and each time refused to
I think it would be amazing to rewind on the 2021 finals. Bucks winning the first championship in 50 years. Giannis getting a gruesome injury against the hawks and coming back to average 35 ppg in the finals. The suns using their bubble momentum and Chris Paul reaching his first finals. It’s a super underrated narrative and would make a fantastic video.
Lol obviously still hurt and shell-shocked Bucks fan needs to see something soothing and validating after the Jimmy Butler utter domination to the point that Giannis is acting like a scared puppy on the court that just happened. xD Sorry, not sorry.
