    Thanks for the video. I am reviving one of these old MacBooks to run it with Ubuntu. Only one tiny difference in the part where you flip over the logic board there is still one more cable connected to the body. Seems to be part of the speaker (same connector). Needed to unscrew the speaker from the logicboard to disconnect. It was a bit tricky but worked out. The WLAN cable (funny word 😅) has a small glued in block to hold it in place. It needs to be moved to the side by force to put the cable back in.

    Best videos out there!! And this is 5 years after this posted.
    Kinda wish you had something on upgrading the processor.

    You should rename this to Thermal Paste replacement. Unless you actually replaced the heat sink unit which the video did not show.

    After poking around a bit while my battery is calibrating I found out that the 2.66GHz and 2.8GHz 15 inch MacBook Pros do have 2 fans like you show in this video while only my 2.53Ghz Model A1286 has one fan similar to the 13 inch models, however I haven't found the model numbers for the 2.8GHz or 2.66GHz, but will look around a bit more after I've slept and gotten some other stuff done as I doubt that the model numbers would be the same.

    i replaced my thermal paste, screwed up the speakers in the meantime cause that cable broke off the board instead of popping off it properly, got it somewhat fixed by soldering it back down as best i could for now, but only the left side works. kinda annoying but happy that the laptop still works at least xD

    What screwdriver is needed to remove logic board?

    Are you sure you labeled this video right? I recently performed a Ram and Battery replacement on my mid 2009 MacBook Pro and had studied this video first as well as a few others as I wanted to look at the screws and connections to make sure I had the right tools to remove a main-board if really needed and plan out how to do it using one hand. Once opened the back panel the first thing I noticed was only one fan in the center like on a 13" MacBook Pro. Under About this Mac from the Apple Menu it clearly says: MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2.53GHz, Mid 2009), the back Panel says in very small print A1286, and the display measures right around 15" on the diagonal using a long precision steel ruler I used to use measuring bar stock for a few different CNC lathes back when I was a Machinist making Aircraft parts a few decades ago. I still need to go back in and replace the old 120GB SSD that only has about 10 GB or less of storage space while I can still write to it when can get the right parts for that but can wait on the thermal paste now as after cleaning off the fan and air grating it seems to be running a lot cooler than it was. But you may want to check that this isn't a 17" Mac from the same or some other year FYI. Good info otherwise.

      Just replaced the batter in my mid 2009 and you are correct. I only have one fan.

      @@khiggins6311 After doing some more digging found out that 15 inch Mid 2009 MackBook Pro's with 2.6Ghz or higher CPU's have 2 fans. I found some software online somewhere called Max fan Controls that allows setting the fan to run more often which is keeping the CPU temperature down quite a bit though it still runs hotter than I would like to see. Apple throttles the fan speed and frequency down way too low so the machine is quieter, but doesn't last as long. It was an easy install and setup, but I don't remember off the top of my head where I got it or if I had to pay for it, but is a must have utility to keep this thing cooled down. I would have replaced the old thermal paste on the CPU and GPU but as they are on the opposite side of the main board there were a lot of small wires to disconnect without breaking using only one hand so decided to leave well enough alone for now unless can afford another backup laptop of some sort.

    I did a thermal paste reapplication and my temps are 65 C - 75, idle ... is this normal ?? whats your normal idling temp ... maybe i added too much paste ...

    • @GRIBSOFT
      @GRIBSOFT  Před 6 lety

      That’s a totally acceptable range. Just make sure you use it on a flat surface.

    • @YosemiteJohn
      @YosemiteJohn Před 3 lety

      I didn't replace my thermal paste yet but downloaded Max Fan Control and used it to set the fan running most all the time though not at full speed unless it gets real hot and right now it is at 63.6 degrees C down from about 90 C before the fans were still set to Apple's specs, so that thermal paste replacement helped quite a bit.

      Check you keyboard ribbon cable connection. 99% because the power button is part of the keyboard, if it's not sitting correctly in the socket it will not power on.
