  • *UPDATE* This laptop died in August 2018.
I use a 2012 Mac Mini for almost everything, but still need a portable computer once in a while. I had a 2008 MacBook Pro that died in it's 7th year, so I picked up a used 2011 MBP 15in and maxed it out with 16GB RAM and an SSD. It's stupid fast for 7 years old. It's a fantastic computer 7 years later, works great for most editing jobs I've thrown at it, until yesterday when it randomly rebooted while working with some footage.
It started rebooting itself while I was editing videos, killing time, at the Toyota dealership waiting for some driveline rattle diagnostics in my 2017 Tacoma DCSB 6M. No word on that yet.
Turns out the heat sink fins were plugged up with dust, so that wasn't helping. I cleaned them out, put things back together and it seemed solid - but it has rebooted itself once since... A few months later, it died

I think people must be using their laptops more, this video has surged to the top of most viewed list in April 2020, maybe indicating that everyone is at home using their technology more than usual. Sadly, this laptop died 2 months after making this video. I replaced it with another MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018). I kind of wish I didn't wait so long, replacement has been very, very good.

Can you tell me if there's a difference in the thermal paste or are they all ok

Dunno, this laptop died shortly after the video was made. I upgraded to a 2018 15” MacBook Pro when it died. It’s been awesome

Same thing happened to me with also on 2011 macbook pro overheating crash regularly only someone gave it to me broke for free.. Incredibly i got it working 100% after a clean and re-paste... Although it was a non-GPU version... The ones with GPU will always die when this happens because the Gpu already ran hot as it is.... I kinda recommend staying away from them on the used market because they are prone to die...

It’s too bad, really. The MacBook ran fantastic right up until it didn’t. I have an m1 ultra now, it’s fantastic

Great way to end the video. Nice video! Is that a common problem in Mac books?

Hello! I have a question.. Could this possibly help with my current issue? My macbook showed a black screen and fans went crazy then it turned off. It then restarted but after showing the logo and progress bar, it just shows a white screen, turns off, restarts and does the same thing over and over again..

Without applying new high quality thermal paste for this such old laptop, you won’t get good results

Damage had already been done, it never really recovered. Replaced with 2018 MBP
