  • On this episode of Crazy Will Tech Show, I show you how to fix the 2011 15'' Macbook Pro GPU problem. So I had the problem 5 years ago, the graphics card died. The AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics comes unsoldered and can't really be fixed. Trust me I have tried, even the backed apple approach which involves you putting it in an oven which reflows the solder. I even tried a heat gun...and that killed it lol. So after apple fixed it I just kept up with the heat using smc fan control and it worked for those 5 years. I knew the problem would come back to haunt me, and last Wednesday it did. I was working on thumbnail for youtube and bam the MacBook Pro 2011 GPU Glitch was back with a vengeance. This time it was rebooting my Mac book pro over and over agin. So after lottttt of research I found out that this particular 2011 MacBook Pro has two graphics cards and you can run off of the Intel HD Graphics 3000 with 384MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory. Now this is not the best of solutions but beats the hell out of taking apart your Mac and possibly damaging. This worked for me and now I can get back to using my 2011 15'' MacBook Pro with a little bit of a handicap. This video also shows you how to get around the booting problem that I was up against.
    The Guide I used
    gist.github.co...
    Disable verbose boot mode
    sudo nvram boot-args=""
    Enable SIP
    csrutil enable

So I thought I'd dig up my original 2011 17 inch Macbook Pro which is older than the one fixed 2 days ago so I can try to fix it with your solution. It has OSx 10.9.5 Mavericks. The csrutil cmd is not recognized after using Single User Mode & Terminal while in Recovery Mode. So I decided to go onto the next steps since I got nothing to lose. Well lo and behold. This fixed the bad GPU/display issue and the display is behaving normally even though I could not use the csrutil cmd. I am so happy I found your video!!! Thank you once again for sharing your detailed solution which has given new life to 2 Macbook Pro's both over 12 years old. Again, you are a genius!!!

THANK YOU!!! I had the same problem with my 2011 MacBook Pro. I took it to an authorized Apple repair shop and they replaced the graphics card for $450. I didn’t use my MacBook for a few weeks (should have). When I started using it more frequently I started having the same exact problem again and unfortunately I was past the repair warranty. My boot loop had a purple Apple logo with low resolution, pixilated graphics. I followed all of your steps here and I’m back to a working computer again!!! Seriously can’t thank you enough for your video and this solution, it’s NOWHERE to be found online! I’m going to forward this video to the repair shop so they can learn how to properly fix this problem.

I can't thank you enough! I just fixed two 2012 17" macbooks using this method. I have to add that it took me several tries but after I understood the logic and got the computers to actually disable csrutil and successfully move the AMD extensions, and then reset the nvram using the code...voila! I also have to say that I have been reflowing the logic boards successfully for the last year, several times each. Always only temporary. Also, I just took them both to the repair shop and they analyzed them to see if they could fix... one denied outright, "we are unable to fix" and the other went through "rigorous testing"... not sure what that means. I brought it home and it worked and then a week goes by and now it won't boot! Which brought me to doing further research and to this video. I'm now looking at two working laptops!! Yes!! Thank you!!

Mine was stuck too... Simply create a bootable osx drive on another laptop... You can use windows also with transmac or create a bootable usb using virtual machine... I used virtual machine by following a guide from geekrar website. Then downloaded os using dosdude1 patcher... Once my usb was setup i booted into my laptop holding alt(option) key and booted into usb... Then from top i selected utilites and selected terminal and turned off csrutil that way... Other steps i followed from this video...

Thank you so much guys for this. It really saved me! Just to note for people that are still on Mavericks Os X that the command csrutil disable and enable is not necessary. When I was writing it, I was receiving the usual notification that the command does not exist when in recovery mode. However I tried csrutil disable; reboot and it rebooted while I don't think the command scrutil worked and then I moved the files as shown in the tutorial. Maybe Mavericks doesn't have this kind of security.

After 5 years... I just got mine working thanks to this guide. My MBP LATE 2011 was on Yosemite, i figured out that was why CSRUTIL wasn't working. I was able to update to High Sierra luckily because the disable GPU part was in the beginning of the process. Otherwise, it wouldve shutdown or blackscreen on me.
Also i did get stuck getting error 2002F on the recovery mode part i think it was having trouble connecting to the internet during that process. I was able to access terminal by doing CMD+R by itself, i think that way it by passes the internet connecting part.
Thanks again, now I'm planning on upgrading ram and the HDD!

This saved my early 2011 17" MBP running El Capitan. Instructions worked perfectly. I may attempt to open it and fix it properly if possible. This may have all happened like this: i was using it fine, then closed it for standby mode, but heard the fans across the room - machine was cooking itself. Opened it, no screen, so held down power button to force off. Next day: apple logo boots up but then goes to blank white screen. This fix worked!
