Oh my god, your hooper reaction is the most emotional one I have ever seen from you on your channel! you must read the following it is a book chapter on the same event, it is beautiful you will love it even though it is a lance in the book, not a battle axe:
Hopper came and left the ground in a leap, soaring like the eagles. The Whitecloaks had only a moment to begin cursing before Hopper’s jaws closed on the throat of the man with his lance leveled at Perrin, and Perrin was one with the wolf. Hopper, the cub who had watched the eagles soar, and wanted so badly to fly through the sky as the eagles did. The cub who hopped and jumped and leaped until he could leap higher than any other wolf, and who never lost the cub’s yearning to soar through the sky, Blood matted his fur, a gash down his face crossed the empty socket where his left eye had been. His good eye met Perrin’s two for just an instant. Run, brother! He whirled to leap again, to soar one last time, but Whitecloak's lance pinned him to the earth, Pain filled Perrin, and he screamed, a wordless scream that had something of a wolf’s cry in it. Without thinking Perrin leaped forward, still screaming. All thought was gone, he did not know if it was Hopper or himself who died.

I’ve seen a lot of people complain about Nynaeve’s story arc this season, but I thought it was handled really well.
This whole season has been about slavery, in one way or the other. Egwene is a slave to Renna (most obvious), Moiraine to Siuan (drawing comparisons between Renna forsing Egwene to channel and Siuan forsing Moiraine to close the waygate), Mat to his fears, and finally Nynaeve to her hatred for her powers.
They have already established her as someone with incredible potential, but who absolutely refuses to work for it. Think of the first episodes of this season where she would rather immediately drink dirty water than even TRY to clean it . During her acceptance trial, she chooses to leave the tower and live a normal life. She does not think that she needs her channeling abilities, she does not want to channel, and thus, she cannot channel at will.
This season had to set up the change in her attitude, so they made her utterly useless. None of her plans work. It is Elayne, who in the end saves the day by bargaining with the Aes Sedain in Falme, concocting a plan to meet with Loial and even healing Rand. Healing being specifically Nynaeve’s special power! In the end, when Nynaeve is sitting helpless next to Rand watching Elayne healing him, you can see how helpless and useless she feels. And if there’s one thing we know about Nynaeve, it’s that she hates being helpless. I believe that next season she will begin training very hard, and we will see an incredible power up from her. It’s a great way to set up a longer arc for her, and shows that the show’s creators are confident in their future seasons.

Some Season 1 "Behind the Scenes" potential Spoilers below, about Brandon Sanderson's reaction to the final episodes.
      .
      .
      .
      .
      .
      .
If I recall things correctly, he had comments that instead of being these Overpowered conduits, both Egwene and Nynaeve would instead falter in a way that could have been prevented if they had been trained. This would make them see that they have potential but due to their lack of training they were in danger and the whole world was in danger (remember tha they think Rand died and she's hoping she being trained could have saved him). I think they took that criticism to heart in this season.
Egwene says in S2 Ep4 when Nynaeve tells her she's going to help Perrin and Loial that she's training so that she will never be useless and instead next time be able to defend the city and help Rand and their friends. She even says this explicitly to Nynaeve. I'd say the arc for Nynaeve is the same here, she realize that she cannot just wing it (YOLO doesn't really work in Wheel of Time I guess) and go by instinct the way she's done before. She will need to train, practice, try to break her block or at least find ways around it. She realize now that someone like Elayne (who she disliked in the beginning but has grown to like during the season) is way more useful to her towns people than she herself. That is a tough blow for her.
So I agree, I think we will see Nynaeve start to train and practice a lot more in Season 3, even if it happens more off-camera.

People complained that Nynaeve didn't do anything, but I think it's a good thing. They have powered her up SO much that non-book readers only depend on her to save the day. You and most other non-book readers all said the same thing, Nynaeve will save them all. If that happened, it would have ruined the whole episode. Nynaeve had a chance to shine the whole of season 1 and the first 3 episodes of season 2. It's time for the rest of the Edmonds 5 to shine. In the book, she was dealing with her block for 7 books! It was really annoying.

My only real complaint with the episode was the sidelining of Elayne and Nynaeve. Would have rather had them rescue Egwene and then all three of the girls defending on the tower. Would have made more sense in terms of power levels if all three of them held off Ishy too.

    • @AndyLuu72
      @AndyLuu72 Před 10 měsíci +10

@@talmanes4589 I understand what you are saying and that is more accurate to the book. However, I like what they did in the show because Egwene has been under the shadow of Nynaeve the whole time and she needed to shine. Also, after all of her struggles under the Sul'dam, it would have deflated her victory to have her being rescued by someone who has been outshining her. They want to show not just her strength in the One Power, but her mental strength so that non-book readers can be prepared for what she is going to do in the future.

@@AndyLuu72 I don't disagree with a lot of that but unfortunately doing it the way they did removed any need for Nynaeve to be in the episode. All these characters get plenty of opportunities to shine eventually, it's more about Nynaeve just having a reason to be there.

The problems with the show is not Covid, or episode constrictions or budget, it's the hiring of an inexperienced show runner who makes poor choices like adding made up content to a story that needs to make cuts. Rafe believing that he can make the wheel of time better then what the original author intended is the problem. The show is not great, not even good, is it entertaining at times? sure if you shut your brain off and ignore all the inconsistencies in the writing, ignore the characters either reacting out of character or just doing nothing. If I could forget what I read in the books, the show might be a 4/10 at best and I would have stopped watching somewhere around episode 3 or 4 in season 1.

Book readers are a mixed bag on everything, because we have expectations, and when the show deviates from those we can feel disappointment instead of enjoying the positives. It’s sometimes human nature for people to focus on the negative. One might have otherwise enjoyed 90% of an episode, but if the 10% that isn’t like the books is considered blasphemy in the mind of that reader, it can ruin the whole experience.

I'm a book reader who _does_ like the show, but I'm also the kind of person who allows adaptations to be their own thing.
The important thing to me is that these characters feel right to me, regardless of the fact that some of the events and circumstances are different in the show. I'm able to enjoy the show for what it is, but also use my knowledge of the books to see a bit deeper into what the show is doing, seeing how they're setting up and paying off key moments, and it is fun to speculate as to how certain events from the books will play out in this new story, or if they'll be included at all. The show is _very_ different from the books, and the show is by no means perfect in my opinion, but *the books were never perfect in my opinion either.*
I definitely think the show has done a MUCH better job with Lanfear, Ishamael and Liandrin than the books did, for instance, which gives me hope that Moghedien (our spidery friend from the end of the finale) and Graendal (the other female Forsaken who Lanfear referred to as a "vain idiot" in an earlier episode) will be done well. I'm interested to find out who "the boys" are that Lanfear referred to, as there were 13 Forsaken in the books and apparently there will be only 8 in the show. We know that Ishamael, Lanfear, Moghedien and Graendal are four of them (and realistically none of them could be excluded from the show), but the identity of the other four will be a fun reveal. Of course I have my theories, but that's spoiler territory, so I shall say nothing to non-book readers.
Love the non-book reader perspective, it really helps me see what the showrunners are doing to set up the series long-term. I'm glad it's landing the way it is, I am so happy these wonderful characters are gaining new fans. ☺

For your last points about other's opinions of media: I had the EXACT same reaction to The Last Jedi as you and seeing the reaction after was truly wild. For Wheel of Time, I think people have pretty clearly 'picked sides' on the show and those of us who enjoy it are rolling with the changes and feel like you do: it's really a great show. Personally, I still think it remains incredibly true to the characters and the overall story - I recognize everything that's happening even if sometimes the order of events get shifted around or moved locations (for example, Hopper in the books actually died back in book 1 when Egwene and Perrin are captured by the Whitecloaks the first time). Those who have decided that they don't like the adaptation...well, they've decided that and so they'll scream about every single change made from the books as though it makes the show 'bad'.
The way I see it is that they have 14 super long books to adapt and Amazon is only giving them 8 episodes a season and only one hour per episode. Things are going to need to be - ya know, - adapted to fit in that format (plus a ton of the books are focused on internal thoughts and feelings which are impossible to translate on screen - the show has to SHOW them instead of just having an internal monologue explaining the characters reasoning). If we did a direct translation from the books (like some claim to want), it would take DECADES to tell the story and these poor actors would be so old by the time we get to the end!
So I honestly wouldn't even give the people who hate the show based on 'it's not a 1 for 1 copy of the book' any notice. There's nothing the show could possibly do to make them jump on board and accept any changes/adaptations to the source material. As the show runner has described the show: it's a different turning of the wheel than the books. So while it's the same conflict, characters, and many of the things that happen are the same as the books, it's going to happen in slightly different ways for the show because no two turnings of the wheel are ever exactly the same.
Love your love for the show and I'm so happy it's found a wider audience than just us book readers! It truly is an amazing story with such powerful characters and messages I think will really resonate with a lot of people.

As an avid book reader of this series I was lukewarm on season 1 with all the changes and the flaccid season finally. But season 2 is TOP KNOTCH!! I am loving it and think the season 2 finally was the best episode so far. With Eyes without pity as the next best episode. So I am really excited about season 3. But changes from the book, but I look at the TV series as a different turning of the wheel and am fully invested. It is really nice to see a whole new fan base. If you ever read the books you may end up being disappointed with them! Glad others are finding this episode as fun and exciting as I did, not everyone feels the same but that's ok. Differences of opinion are just fine.

As a huge fan of Nynaeve I originally felt like I would have liked to see her more involved but I actually think for her arc this is a good move by the writers. The stuff with Mat was fantastic, and so awesome to see on the screen. Season 2 as a whole was a big step forward for the series. Season 3 was in production already before the strikes so I am hopeful that the wait between 2 and 3 will be shorter than 1 and 2.

Welcome to book 3+ Mat, it's a hell of a ride the rest of the way and not just Mat.
Moggy is literally The Spider. If you pay attention to the lighting during that scene it becomes clear Moggy wired the whole room with her hidden little webs to trap Lanfear. It probably took everything she had to hold Lanfear even wuth getting the drop on her. You notice she doesn't dare turn her back on Lanfear as she leaves.

As a book reader I generally I enjoyed was what on screen in the episode, my main struggles was that they tried to get everything on screen for one episode, I think this could have easily been a 2 episode battle to get it better paced. That's not a knock on the showrunners, more so a knock on Amazon for forcing them to 8 Episode seasons where in my opinion a 10 episode season would have giving them more leeway for story progression and character development leading up to a 2 episode finale.
They really set it up well for 7 episodes getting everyone to where they needed to be in the story but we haven't seen much of Rand's progression with the power really so they kinda went 0-100 real fast, same goes for Mat who in my opinion hasn't had enough screen time to evolve as a character. This again isn't a knock to the show, a few more episodes in the season would have made it more natural I think. In Egwene's case a lot more time was put into it and it felt more natural than other storylines.
All and all it was a good ending to the season seeing what they had to work with and the season in full has been really good, differs a lot from the books for obvious reasons but I've been on board with most changes they made if not all.
Also I have been thouroghly enjoying your reactions to the show, watched all of them but hasn't really commented until now so here is my wall of text I guess xD

I believe the writers wrote the script for season 2 when season 1 aired. They have also filmed most of season 3, and I believe it wraps next week. It will then spend a year or more being tweeked. That post production time was woefully missing from season 1. We have Covid to thank for that, and the small battles in season 1. In a way this makes me very happy since season 1 was still the top streaming show, and yet is soooo much better now. I do really hope this lasts all 8 seasons. Where it all goes is craaazy. You see Ishamael brush dust off his hands halfway through the episode, quite likely related to him breaking the others free. Lanfear also tells the Ship Captain that Moiraine talks to in Ep1 that she has a bunch of objects she want him to throw into the sea far out where no one will find them. She had planned to dump the other Forsaken and let them rot in their prisons!

    What does that mean?!
Remember, Wheel of Time. Everything repeats. This is not the first time the Wheel has turned, it is not the first time the Dragon is Reborn. The Wheel has spun so many times that those with memories that transcend it (e.g. the Heroes of the Horn) call it "times beyond numbering". This has all happened a silly amount of times, and it is also why Ishamael (and Dana the Innkeeper from S1 Ep3) want the Dark one to win. So that this can all stop happening, so that people stop being born into poverty, disease, war, slavery and all the other nasty stuff.

Hopper will always be best boy 🥺 we knew it was coming but it still hits hard. Here's to hoping the wait for season 3 isn't 2 years 🤞
I think the reason why some book readers dislike the show so much is due to so many changes. For example Mat and Rand in the books also help search for the horn, not just Perrin. Rand doesn't pretend he is dead and they all go to the eye of the world and then after to the tower. Just stuff like that. Other things are left out completely from the books. I for one can enjoy both the show and the books as seperate entities. Season 1 was wonky with some good and other not so good parts but I really enjoyed season 2!

Matt was a 'combat master' many times in past lives. Combat Master is putting it lightly honestly. Yes, he received all his memories back of his past lives. When a Hero dies they become one. The Wheel can reincarnate them if it decides. The wheel weaves what the wheel wills.
Hopper died in the books saving Perin as well.
Lanfear is more of an anti-hero than villain. She can't switch sides ever. Once sworn to the shadow you're sworn, "you can't go back" as Lanfear said to Liandrin. "There are many paths you can walk in the dark".

Part of teh prophecy of the Dragon goes like this
Twice and twice shall he be marked
twice to live, and twice to die.
Once the heron, to set his path.
Twice the heron, to name him true.
Once the Dragon, for remembrance lost.
Twice the Dragon, for the price he must pay.
By this point in the books that's been said about half a dozen times so I don't think it's a spoiler.
Moghidien is actually the least powerful of the forsaken, but she's wiley and tricksy, if you watch the scene again she is in the room when Lanfear looks from one set of stones to the other, waiting in the shadows for Lanfear to step into the trap she already had woven. She was very young when she was sealed and she's an awesome villain. Always one step ahead of everyone, always with a back up plan to her backup plan.

Lanfear is always on Lanfear's side ;). She's always purely selfish. Which is why the other Forsaken kinda despise her as she never worked "with" them and considered some of them beneath her. In the First Age it was a sign of power when people "earned" a third name, some of the Forsaken while powerful hadn't earned a 3rd name yet, so I think Lanfear is still a little snobbish too about the others (Moghedien only had 2 names).
Also Lanfear "claimed" Tel'an'rhiod (world of dreams) (sp) as her realm kinda, but Moghedien was actually more skilled in the World of Dreams and manipulating it and would often "lurk" hence her nickname is the "The Spider", which is a nickname Lanfear came up with for her to mock her, but she embraced it. Moghedien is an excellent spymaster/spy I look forward to see where they go with her in Season 3 especially with this whole creepy vibe.

The short answer is that its complicated. The long answer is that its coooooomplicatttttted.
I knew it was an adaptation going in. What I said was that I want to see the same characters, not necessarily the same events. Because it was going to be cut down. Especially with Amazon limiting it to 8 episodes to make it easy to binge. Also some bits are hard to visualize, there is a reason Wheel of Time has been called "unfilmable" and it isn't *just* because of 15 books and 2700 characters.
The thing is, they also spent *a lot* of time on new material, like making Liandrin not a 2d villian of the week. And they also did such a good job on Eqwene, Nyneave, and Moiraine's arcs. With new material for them.
On the flip side, they obviously didn't know what to do with Mat, which.... fair. But, if they've cut his growth out of next season like the finale set up, that is some of the best storylines in the entire series.
Worse is Rand. They cut *so much* of his growth from book 2! And he doesn't actually make decisions at all. Plus, they made him sexual with "Selene" and since it is canon that she used Compulsion on him in the book, and since they didn't address it in the show... then I can only conclude that he's been SA'ed for months while magically compelled to love his assaulter. I'm... really not okay with that.
Plus, the story has inconsistencies *within itself*, like how Moiraine could attack the ships under the Three Oaths, and how Loial was stabbed by the dagger in 1:8
Also, Min. She was supposed to be a main character with strong ties to multiple characters.
Elayne should have ties to other characters she'd never met in the show, and her meeting Rand was really janky and weird.
I'm trying not to spoil the books or the show, but it isn't minor plot points that have been cut. It would be like if Harry Potter 3 dropped Sirius as a character but then had a plotline around Hermione's family not wanting her to be a witch. Yeah, the movie dropped some things I liked from the books, but the plot was recognizable. And changing the plot this hard *does* change the characters. And that is the sad thing, I see hints of how Mat and Rand could be (Perrin is fine, as long as they give him his time next season to shine. Hopper though, was amazing), but they are just so.... watered down (and consenses is that Rand is bland until you get to know him better). Show Min is F tier, book Min is S tier. And obviously Rafe stated Eqwene is his favorite, but even with her, she makes choices in the show that are much better done in the book and wouldn't cost time or money to implement (read book 2 to see if you'd agree).
Personally, the test is next season. Specifically, Rand develops independence. If that, or Mat's story, or Perrin's Book 4 arc take a hit... (or Eqwene's plot line either) I'm done. I cannot watch it if they botch book 4, which is still my favorite book of all time and got me through some dark times. I still won't begrudge those who enjoy the show... and I do enjoy the show, but not enough to see book 4 not done justice.
I honestly think that is the most positive I can make this. Do I like it? Yes. Am I also disappointed? ...also yes.
Edit: Though it should be said that I'm really pissed at all the toxic people that are fans of the same stuff I am. And to anyone harrassing other people or hating on the show because some characters are non-White and/or gay, I say that they are crappy as people and I'm ashamed at how many like the same things I do.

Those are the Heroes of the Horn. They are people who accomplished something so amazing in the past that when they died they became bound to the Horn and will appear when it is blown. That's why everyone has said that you need the Horn of Valere in the Last Battle.
So as a book reader, things weren't exactly the same but there were a lot of the same scenes just happening in different places, if that makes sense. And many lines in the show were taken straight from the books, so that was great to see. Overall I thought it was a fantastic finale. There were a couple of nit pick things that I wish they had expanded a bit more on (Ingtar, for example, has a whole backstory and a reason why he sacrifices himself here but that's never discussed). Also Rand and Turak had a whole sword fight in the books instead of him getting Indiana Jonesed. It was a cool scene, but it wouldn't make much sense on the show as Rand doesn't have much sword fighting experience. The stuff with Mat and the Heroes of the Horn was fantastic (I yelled "Yes, Mat, DO THE THING" when he blew the horn). Moghedien is appropriately creepy, possibly even better than in the books. I never believed that Lanfear was ever "good". More that Lanfear cares about her own interests, so if helping Rand accomplishes her goals then she's all for it. But she's also perfectly willing to murder tons of innocent people to do so.
This season really gives me hope. Book 4 is my favorite book in the series and from everything I've heard they plan to cover it in season 3, so I'm looking forward to that.

One caveat about the Heroes of the Horn. They are bound to the horn and will appear when it is blown except when the Wheel has spun them out for another life. Mat is alive so he remembers being a hero, but is not bound to it. The same would have been true of Uno except his latest incarnation was killed. (Book readers should know Uno’s identity from details in this episode, but I won’t spoil it because it might become important later.)

It isn't accurate to the books, but this does bring the story much much closer to the books than it was. Truly, a great episode. Sincerely, a book lover.

Oh mate it's great to see you so invested and loving it - I am one of those book readers you don't understand but i begrudge no-one their enjoyment of it - i think it looked really good, i'm sure it was a sick TV show for ppl like urself :-) It's just not RJ's story they are telling which is what makes it hard to divorce from your mind if that makes sense? Ppl will have different opinions on that, but they are kidding themselves tbh. The lads have just been butchered mate, it's as simple as that. I think the girls are being done really well, too well in eggys case tbh and they kinda missed with Nyn this ep but she's had a fair go so that's prolly alright - but yeah, changing character motivations for characters when you've read and re-read them for decades is just really jarring and at times, yup, offensive to see play out on screen is all :-) But!! I personally get a bunch of enjoyment from watching ppl like urself explore the world and catch the bug so there is always a silver lining, as they say.

the book battle is way better :D but the show wouldn't have been able to do the battle that way due to changes they made in season 1 and the vast amount of screen time given to liandrin and the white tower at the start of this season. they have no choice but to do the battle on a smaller scale compared to the books. the final episode was better than i expected it to be :) pleasantly surprised. but no where near as awesome as the books lol. SPOILERS AHEAD IF YOU DO INTEND TO READ THE FIRST 2 BOOKS.
the battle is much bigger with bigger armies and when matt blows the horn, it's not just like 10 heroes. it's like an entire army sort of like the LOTR undead army.
rand in the books has been learning to use the sword since book 1 from lan. so rand actually has a sword fight with turak who is a full blademaster and wins. then he fights ishamael who wields a staff and using a tactic lan taught ran in book 1, he let's ishamael stab him in the side with the staff and gets wounded so he can give ishamael the killing blow.
ingtar is a dark friend who was responsible for many deaths at fal darrah. when he goes on the hunt for the horn with rand, matt and perrin, he gets to know rand better and starts having hope that the light could win against the dark one and makes it his sole purpose to help the boys get the horn back so he can maybe find some redemption. in the end rand forgives him and he sacrifices his life for rand.
egwene doesn't save her self. nynaeve, elayne and min help egwene escape.
the rand vs ishamael fight is sort of "telecasted" in the sky and all the cities, towns and villages in that area of the land see rand fighting ishamael and know that the dragon has been reborn.
