      Yup, because this interview was only right after the film so it was still fresh. Today, it's now different & he despises being associated with the movie after all the negative critiques it got for the next 2 decades after. And also had no control over later edits/cuts I just hope that he realizes today that his movie is now at cult status. So far the Spicediver +4k upscale edit seems to the best & closest to the book so far. I think Frank would have also been proud of the Spicediver cut.

      @@robwebnoid5763 I don't think he despises the film, rather he despises how he "sold out" and didn't have final cut. He often says there are aspects of Dune that he likes very much, it's just not the version he would have released. If anything I think he just regards Dune as being a lesson learned.

    • @bravothreeninesixeight6663
      @bravothreeninesixeight6663 Před 10 lety +9

      It was a mind-blowing experience until I read the book! I saw the Lynch film, then the Harrison Syfy mini-series, and only then did I read the book! AND THAT WAS MIND BLOWING!! I read the entire book in about a 48 hour period, which is very unusual for me since I usually take my time reading. The scale of the book is such that I personally consider that the only way to truly represent the epic scale of the work is to do it as a TV series. The David Lynch film is visually beautiful but it ultimately fails to capture the complete intricate scale of Frank Herbert's genius. Upon having read the book, I felt as if I had been robbed; the film is practically a trailer to the book. You get absolutely no inkling as to the comprehensive size and detail of the Dune universe. IMHO Frank Herbert was a writer of genius comparable to Tolkien, perhaps even exceeding him since the substance of his work is much more relevant. To me it is an absolute tragedy that most people may not ever come to appreciate Herbert the way Tolkien is appreciated because no one has ever made a 3 part 9 hour cinematic trilogy out of his work. I was so disappointed when Peter Berg dropped out of the reboot project, until I saw 'Battleship'!

      Many others on the other hand blindly disregard this movie purely to jump on the bandwagon of agreeing with critics as they think it gives them some credibility (in that regard, these sheep don’t seem to have the capability/courage to form an opinion of their own).

He didn't want to have his creative control limited by that, but ironically he ended up losing creative control on Dune anyway. It's a shame because George could have been the perfect mentor he needed to translate his ideas into cinematic effects. Before Dune there were interesting sci-fi elements in Lynch's work, but after Dune he was traumatized and stayed away from sci-fi.

    The film is such a flawed gem, I can understand the problems with it and certain criticism, but I think it's immensely rewatchable. If you can find it, there is a fanedit that runs for three hours that includes almost all of the available footage that has been released called Dune: Third Stage Edition. I was lucky enough to get the 7GB DVD version some time back, I think it's a bit scarce now however.

Feyd should have been more fleshed out, he was a bit like the dude at the end of The Phantom Menace, just turns up at the end and tries to cause havoc, him being groomed to be the Barons' relacement and also his fight in the arena with that Atradies slave which was disguised to not look to be so.

    David Lynch I think climbed into my head before making Dune. Every one of the scenes in the first 45 minutes was absolutely exactly how I had pictured it. Even if something happened toward the left or right, that was how it was in my head. Watching the movie was an eerie experience for me, until finally one of the scenes broke with my brain. David Lynch was amazingly faithful to the book. It is perhaps the best Sci-Fi book in our history so far, and it deserved the fidelity Lynch brought to it.

    Only the final product matters. Simple logistics are the reason for Dune’s 135 minute running time. In those days it was the longest a film could be and still enable theatres to do 2 shows per evening (when reel 2 started, the 1st reel was brought to another auditorium and started after fifteen minutes “spill over” time.) Oh, and I’m not high and mighty, I just so happen to agree with Lynch who called the film an “empty product that waterskies on the surface.”
