Tell me about your homeworld Usul. Thank you for some great memories, acquired long after the film was released just to give you an idea of the legacy you helped create. You were a massive part of the two most influential films in SciFi history that had such an impact on my young psyche, I thank you for that. x.
This was an awesome video! I have to say that I've watched this movie (Dune) for the better part of my life and have never found myself wanting for anything when it comes to it. The movie was great and your acting in it (as was everyone else) superb. To make a film like it at that time......must have been incredible. Thirty minutes to get in your suits and then to have to wait, whew......
And also makes it seem like the movie was made a century ago. Then again I doubt she could have gotten clearance for the actual soundtrack but youtube has an ok collection of music nowadays.
Music choice aside it is unfortunately overwhelming your voice and makes it difficult to keep up as well as it creates pacing that does not flow with the video at all.
I was an extra in that movie in Mexico City i was in the same scene with Sting, he is a wonderful person and I use to translate because of- no hablar español. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet all these Actors at the same time and director David Linch was a Genius. at the same time in the same studio, they were making Conan the Barbarian with Arnold Slazenger, at lunchtime we did not change our customs you can imagine the bizarre scene with all these different customs. After the movie, we work with Carlo Rambaldi the creator of King Kong and we work with the huge worms in a huge scenario like dessert made with "micro-balloons" like mini basketball balls. For special effects and remember we were in 1983 no computers, no digital, it was a wonderful time of my life working with wonderful people.
I remember watching a documentary about those micro-balloons, when the fans powered up everyone had to wear maks because they could cause lung problems or did i dream it ?
@@davedogge2280 No you are right - not for snorting. This stuff is a filler for resins used in fiberglassing and is a very fine mineral dust. You don't want to breath those, same as you don't want to breath fumed silica (cabosil) which is used similarly, and is the stuff in a small percentage in some spice powder blends and other things to make them free flowing. (ever seen the notice "may contain chemicals known to the state of California...") Although they are just mineral powders, tenaciously stick to the tissues in your lungs and sit there aggravating the tissues until - sometimes - the worst happens i.e. the big C. I use the stuff all the time - with a mask!
What a delightful inside look at a sci-fi classic with a--pun intended--galaxy of stars. In contrast to the serious mood of the movie itself, it's fun to see all of you sitting around having breakfast, laughing and chatting. So much talent everywhere you look and what a time capsule! Good for you, Sean, for having the prescience to capture all that on film. There's a lot of generosity and goodwill in all these scenes.
Do you genuinely have good intentions for Sean when you say, "Good for you, Sean"? It comes across as quite distracting and potentially inappropriate for this context. Expressing gratitude with a simple "Thank you" might be more suitable. Unless you are older than her or serve as her mentor, that statement can be interpreted as someone positioning themselves above, peering down, and projecting a condescending impression.
I watch Dune every birthday, it started in my teens, now its a personal tradition. I think its one of the best films ever made and all the people involved should be proud of it.
Dune is a great movie. I stand aghast at how many dislike it. Blasphemy. Im sure as birthday viewer, it's great for family events too, especially while imbibing drinks.
Blasphemy is ignoring the main Herbert's message, exactly what they did. I understand that there are a lot of people who like the film especially because it is visually impressive, but it is not a worthy adaptation, and its mistakes have nothing to do with the footage. The script was the blasphemy. By the way I hate to use that term talking about Dune. It is just the sort of thing a follower of a messianic leader would say.
msyPARIAH You are teasing now, that is unfair 😉 There are thousands of people who would love to see it, myself included( still, after 8 years since your original mesage ☺ ) so, no excuses - you must upload it. Such an uderrated film Dune is, however butchered it might have got by Hollywood execs. Anyway, I know it is well appreciated among sci-fi community in my country (Poland). It ranks among my favourite science fiction films, alongside "Bladerunner", "Dark City" "Alien" , both versions of "Solaris". I just realised that I recognise some esthetic qualities of Jennifer Connely's character in "Dark City" that seem to echo your Rachel...Well, one more reason to like it.
it took me nine years to come here and watch these beautiful souvenirs, hope you'll post more (and if you had this camera with you on Blade Runner's set, I don't mind either)

I was a utility stuntman on Bladerunner and watched them film your street scene. I didn't know who you were at the time, but I vividly remember how stunning you looked standing there in your long fur coat. I remember it being a tough shoot, lots of smoke and rain. We worked from 6pm to 6am every night for two weeks, but it was worth it. Hope you are doing well and know that your wonderful performance in Ridley's classic film will insure you movie immortality for all time. Be well.

I too think Dune is one of the greatest movies ever...I'm 65 and have been a Frank Herbert fan for a very long time...I have watched it countless times and use it sometimes to fall asleep...I find it to be soothing background noise...is that nuts or what?... thanx for being beautiful Sean!
So, here I am 9 years late. I loved the movie when I was a kid, the books and the actors. A special place in my heart and memory is for Sean Young who I loved in blade runner as well. Lots of thanks for the upload from one of your unknown fans.
My dad took me to the theater one day and we were to pick a movie sight unseen. We chose Dune based on the poster and I really wasn't excited to see it. I thought it was boring and that I would never see it again. Years later when I started watching Lynch movies I couldn't leave out Dune. Every time I watch it I like it more.
I decided not to say a lot of things in this video. I thought why bother to reveal all of David's secrets....and I HAVE minced words many times. It is not possible to really say your truth and be considered safe to work with. Hollywood is filled with this fear. Something David Lynch came to be disgusted with in his journey through La la Land....

and to think if Dune made money, Lynch was on board to make the next two books (Dune Messiah and Children of Dune). I would have loved to see Lynch's adaptation of Dune God Emperor.
Jodorowsky's Dune would have been an art-project. It looked very promosing and might have been a stunning ScFi movie but with hardly any connection to the original story.
It's 2020. So many years have passed, yet Dune remains one of my all time favorites. It was released in 1984, the year my second child was born. As my 3 kids grew up, Dune was a movie we watched as a family many times. In fact, randomly quoting a line from the script has given us many occasions for smiles. The movie prompted me to read the entire Dune series, which are incredibly complex novels. The themes and issues addressed in the series are timeless and very relevant. Sean, thank you for being a terrific actress in this and many other films. Your comments about Hollywood film culture are very interesting. As a very young actress I can't imagine what it was like to work on huge productions like Dune and Blade Runner. I hope you write your story so someday we can know those truths that can't be openly discussed even today. Best wishes and many thanks for your stunning performances.
I watched Lynch's Dune again very recently and it still holds up well. The costumes and set designs are absolutely outstanding. Everyone's acting performances are wonderful, and it's also just nice seeing old faces you have come to love over the years. I saw the film in the theater a few times when it came out, and was impressed back then as well. It was a weird, different kind of space epic. I like to describe it as Game of Thrones in space now. Thank you so much for posting this, Sean. And it was also delightful to see you in Bone Tomahawk, if briefly. What a different sort of western that is! I am a huge fan of that director now.
Nobody was allowed to be around Silvana. She had her own Make up room and was basically guarded so nobody had much contact with her. It was a Dino thing...
The movie is worth watching again just to see Sean in the black still suit. She is lovely as is Francesca Annis. What a great cast too. Anything Max Von Sydow is in, is worth watching. The same is true with Jurgen Prochnow. I think the film is very underrated.

Dune is one of my favorite films, and one of the most epic and ambitious sci-fi films of all time. Sean was terrific as Chani and it's great to see this behind the scenes footage that she put together! Apparently 13 people don't agree that the spice must flow....
Maud-dib himself tried to alter the flow of events and at the end of the first book had apparently succeeded. There is another theme not taken up in Dune alas.
Kyle's hair is the most unbelievable thing in Dune. Imagine keeping that hair as you trek through a desert. Where was he getting the water and conditioner?
With the release of the new version of Dune I'm even more aware of what an amazing film the original was. I think the biggest reason is the cast was incredible. How lucky the young David Lynch was to work with you all. Thank you for sharing this!

+SteelCurtain222 I was 10 when it came out and never saw it, maybe cause I thought it would be too scary. But I remember seeing the posters of it at the shopping centres and thought it looked cool, kinda Star Wars like.
I saw it a few years after it came out in the UK, on TV, I was probably about 7 years old and I absolutely loved it although I didn't understand it! I was fascinated by it's weirdness, I used to watch it constantly on video, and then all of a sudden I realised that I was terrified of it! Something just suddenly started to upset me and I couldn't watch it again for years, until I finally read the book when I was 15, and I was able to rediscover it. Definitely an underrated classic.
Personally, I love this movie. It has a creepy tension to it which draws you in and holds your attention. I guess it was just too "weird" and perhaps kinky for the mainstream audience.
I can't believe I have only just found this! I have been 'Dune' crazy for almost Thirty years. I wore out two VHS, I have three CD's, one audio book on cassette, a digital download & that many copies of the book I have lost count.Plus all the sequels and preludes. Dear Sean, you have performed two sublime characters (Rachel & Chani) in two of the most visually groundbreaking Sci-Fi movies of the early 80s : Blade Runner and Dune. These two chefs-d'oeuvres have been in my heart for 40 years now. I have seen various cuts of Dune, official or not, and no matter what cantankerous critics might say, it is a work of art! I have seen the new Dune diptych and it doesn't hold a candle to it. It has no passion, no warmth, no sensuality, (and also... since when the people on Arrakis would actually say the word "Okay" ? Bad writing!) Anyway, your performances are forever in my heart. Thank you.
I came out of the theater after the movie on fire. I loved it. I was a 17 year old dork and I thought it was the greatest thing I'd ever seen. So many good and interesting actors and actresses.
This is so wonderful. You are so wonderful! Thank you for uploading this; it's so great to see this kind of home-footage! Dune is such an important film.. And I'm glad it has this cult classic status now. It's so artful, and cerebral. Qualities that are are lacking in too many new productions. If people try to make a film adaption of Frank Herbert's work again, I'm worried they'll make it into a brand, or a hashtag. I'm glad this is the only film-adaptation of this story at the moment, because the complex and deep nature of the story deserves this level of eccentricity!
+ProtoGuy Denis Villenuve is directing a new Dune movie, and there is a script for 2-part movie, or more if needed (as he stated). Why not give him a chance?
I always loved this movie and felt it never got the recognition it deserved. It was perfectly cast; Sting? What a crazy idea...that worked out to be absolutely correct. Sean Young was beautiful but neither prissy nor a weak damsel, Richard Jordan, Max von Sydow, Patrick Stewart and Kenneth McMillan delivered kick ass performances as usual. The evolution of Paul, from spoiled dauphin to rebel leader was wonderful. Literally everyone, Linda Hunt, José Ferrer, Brad Dourif, Virginia Madsen...they were all exceptional, even in the small parts. The soundtrack was engaging. The film properly balanced spirituality with technology. The production design was top notch. And while some cuts are better than others, none of it is ever boring. I think the mark of a great film is to construct a world the audience feels is real. Indiana Jones did it, Harry Potter did it, Star Wars did it, and so did Lynch's Dune. Every time I watch it, which is about once a year, I see something new.

I remember watching this movie around midnight in Brea, Ca. I was the only one in the theater and I felt like I was watching the greatest sci-fi movie ever. I still cannot understand why it made so little money upon initial release.
I watched this a few times over the years. Lynch's Dune is still a fascinating art project. Full of atmosphere and strangeness and quite unique as a standalone piece. Beautiful vision and sounds, with eerie peculiarities that never break. To me its a moving painting and great theatre. I think people will watch the film again with a new perspective since the latest films have arrived. Also. Sean Young should be in more films. If this is her channel. Thanks for sharing the footage.
This was a great clip to watch, thanks for uploading. Dune is one of my favourite films that I first watched when I was 12 in 1987, it is an epic movie. Sean, if you read these comments, thank you for your great performances in both Dune and Bladerunner. Both yourself and Francesca Annis were, and are still, two very beautiful women who delivered exceptionally good performances in your acting on screen in Dune.
I still find that David Lynch’s Dune is an incredible film. I loved it as a teenager and I love it now. There was nothing wrong with the film. The problem, in my opinion, was that fan base for Dune was relatively small. The general public was probably thinking they’d be seeing another Star Wars, Star Trek, etc. Dune was likely beyond what the average filmgoer could grasp. The film was epic in the true sense of the word. Grand visuals and sounds, the music, all of the actors, absolutely amazing. That’s the problem I find with the current Dune. It feels like a dumbed down version for the masses. It’s brilliant, looks and sounds great, but I feel like a lot is missing. The mini- series was fantastic. It fleshed out a lot of the story because it had time to do so.
I know that “sinking ship” feeling. If a feature is bigger than your experience and it starts going sideways, correcting course is futile. It doesn’t matter how talented, hardworking and professional all the strangers around you are. Just a few bad decisions made early on begin a multi-butterfly effect on production until you are just a passenger on a ship that everyone thinks you are steering - as it takes on water. It’s gotta be even worse when making a famous story that you are not allowed to stray from. Not to mention language barriers every way you turn. I’m glad Lynch somehow survived, healed, and regained his creative footing a few years later with Blue Velvet.
Dune was great, although incomplete. To carry the weight of the first Dune novel will take several films (or a TV series like the one Syfy made), but Lynch knew how to adapt it and made history. It was ahead of its time because there were already Star Wars, Star Trek and Alien and more. The world wasn't ready for the inevitable epic Dune was. As a matter of fact, Ridley Scott was a potential director for the movie. He claimed it would have been bigger than (or as big as) Star Wars, I believe him.
Dune was such an amazing movie. One of those 1980's sci fi masterpieces. I mean everything about the movie, the actors, the sets, the vibe of the movie was so strong. It is Dune. And there have been so many things that this movie influenced its not even funny. I wish they made a sequel with the same cast and director. Maybe Dune 2 and 3 kinda put together in one big movie. Just like Blade Runner had it very distinctive look, Dune had its own look and universe.
Yeah I blame a number of things but the studio and distribution hollywood machine ought to take some of the blame. They should have given Lynch his 3 hr movie on a delayed release instead of 2 hrs movie all or nothing. James Cameron had a directors cut for Aliens, Lynch should have a directors cut for Dune. Lynch needs to return to directing and get a new Dune movie made...
Lynch does not really direct "big movie" like on this scale anymore. In part because of how this movie came out. Kyle MacLachlan said in one of these youtube documentary that he does not really even talk about Dune, because it was just such a bad experience for him. So we will never get a super directors cut, they probity don't even have the hours of film they shot for the movie anymore.
I totally agree. Lynch's Dune is one of the very few best sci-fi epic films ever made. It has a true artistic approach and heart that is not easy to find in big budget mainstream cinema. But it will always be also one of those rare works whose filmmaker is not happy with the final cut. Same thing with Kubrick's Spartacus. I'd love to see also Dune 2 and 3 from Lynch but this will never happen, cause it would be like asking from Tarkovsky to make a sequel to Solaris. So lets be happy and content that this masterpiece exists, even though Lynch does not approve. On the other hand, one can still find and watch the Unauthorized Extended Edition of Dune, that first came out in 2006 as a special Steelbook Dvd, with many new scenes incorporated. Whatever the case, better stick to the original cut, it's still a grand work of art in itself.

Thank you David and crew for making this outstandingly fantastic movie, regardless of what was said when this movie first came out, i found this to be the best sci fi i and many others have ever seen, even though the production didnt work out as planed i had ofen wished to see the other books made into movies as well, but oh well, im sure the folks of today would appreciate them more then they did back then, thank you for making DUNE David Lynch, a masterpiece at it finest.

Dune is still one of the best movies I have in my collection. And over the years i have bought Dune 9 times as it has changed from VHS to DVD and directors cut etc.

msyPARIAH i lived in the funky town of Crockett, Ca where he grew up. Bay Area Cartinez Strait. Port Costa close by is like going back 100 yrs. on day go to the bar/restaurant. The Warehouse there.
Was there ever need to compare Avatar to anything? It is a hollow, hyped-up film that people will forget as soon as the next hollow, hyped up film hits the theatres.
Disappointing as Dune was for me back in '84, it is still 10X better than Avatar. I enjoy nearly all of Lynch's movies but his style of storytelling did not fit well with the expectation of Dune readers. It's a shame so much work and good intentions came off so poorly.
That footage is so full of light and life ! It's almost like we're part of the crew with you. Those must have been such precious moments. Thank you Sean for sharing that video, and for being part of two of the most iconic SF films of the 80's.
In many ways this cult classic is a fascinating film and even at times a great one. It should be of special interest to sci-fi fans in particular. For them, I would say this is a 'don't miss film.' It was certainly a beautiful film to watch and the special effects are stunning
But Lynch WAS making a great movie. Lots of folks still watch it and think of it fondly. If it was made today, when geek culture is celebrated, it would have been a hit. (And thank you Sean for sharing this! You are amazing!)
I've said for a long time that Lynch's Dune was the right film at the wrong time. If we could somehow have that exact same cast, art direction, music but with today's multi-picture deals I have no doubt Lynch could have made a hell of an adaptation. Many of the issues the movie's biggest critics have are the shortcuts Lynch had to take in order to squeeze this incredibly dense book and background information into a singular 2 1/2 hour film.

What a delightful inside look at a sci-fi classic with a--pun intended--galaxy of stars. In contrast to the serious mood of the movie itself, it's fun to see all of you sitting around having breakfast, laughing and chatting. So much talent everywhere you look and what a time capsule! Good for you, Sean, for having the prescience to capture all that on film. There's a lot of generosity and goodwill in all these scenes.
I agree. And back in the early 80's there was a lot less social stress in my humble opinion.
Do you genuinely have good intentions for Sean when you say, "Good for you, Sean"? It comes across as quite distracting and potentially inappropriate for this context. Expressing gratitude with a simple "Thank you" might be more suitable. Unless you are older than her or serve as her mentor, that statement can be interpreted as someone positioning themselves above, peering down, and projecting a condescending impression.

I watch Dune every birthday, it started in my teens, now its a personal tradition. I think its one of the best films ever made and all the people involved should be proud of it.

Dune is a great movie. I stand aghast at how many dislike it. Blasphemy. Im sure as birthday viewer, it's great for family events too, especially while imbibing drinks.

Blasphemy is ignoring the main Herbert's message, exactly what they did. I understand that there are a lot of people who like the film especially because it is visually impressive, but it is not a worthy adaptation, and its mistakes have nothing to do with the footage. The script was the blasphemy. By the way I hate to use that term talking about Dune. It is just the sort of thing a follower of a messianic leader would say.

Such an uderrated film Dune is, however butchered it might have got by Hollywood execs. Anyway, I know it is well appreciated among sci-fi community in my country (Poland). It ranks among my favourite science fiction films, alongside "Bladerunner", "Dark City" "Alien" , both versions of "Solaris". I just realised that I recognise some esthetic qualities of Jennifer Connely's character in "Dark City" that seem to echo your Rachel...Well, one more reason to like it.

I was a utility stuntman on Bladerunner and watched them film your street scene. I didn't know who you were at the time, but I vividly remember how stunning you looked standing there in your long fur coat. I remember it being a tough shoot, lots of smoke and rain. We worked from 6pm to 6am every night for two weeks, but it was worth it. Hope you are doing well and know that your wonderful performance in Ridley's classic film will insure you movie immortality for all time. Be well.

So, here I am 9 years late. I loved the movie when I was a kid, the books and the actors. A special place in my heart and memory is for Sean Young who I loved in blade runner as well. Lots of thanks for the upload from one of your unknown fans.
My dad took me to the theater one day and we were to pick a movie sight unseen. We chose Dune based on the poster and I really wasn't excited to see it. I thought it was boring and that I would never see it again. Years later when I started watching Lynch movies I couldn't leave out Dune. Every time I watch it I like it more.
I decided not to say a lot of things in this video. I thought why bother to reveal all of David's secrets....and I HAVE minced words many times. It is not possible to really say your truth and be considered safe to work with. Hollywood is filled with this fear. Something David Lynch came to be disgusted with in his journey through La la Land....

Jodorowsky's Dune would have been an art-project. It looked very promosing and might have been a stunning ScFi movie but with hardly any connection to the original story.

It's 2020. So many years have passed, yet Dune remains one of my all time favorites.
It was released in 1984, the year my second child was born.
As my 3 kids grew up, Dune was a movie we watched as a family many times.
In fact, randomly quoting a line from the script has given us many occasions for smiles.
The movie prompted me to read the entire Dune series, which are incredibly complex novels.
The themes and issues addressed in the series are timeless and very relevant.
Sean, thank you for being a terrific actress in this and many other films.
Your comments about Hollywood film culture are very interesting. As a very young actress I can't imagine what it was like to work on huge productions like Dune and Blade Runner.

I watched Lynch's Dune again very recently and it still holds up well. The costumes and set designs are absolutely outstanding. Everyone's acting performances are wonderful, and it's also just nice seeing old faces you have come to love over the years. I saw the film in the theater a few times when it came out, and was impressed back then as well. It was a weird, different kind of space epic. I like to describe it as Game of Thrones in space now.

I've seen this move so many times and I had to Google to see who she was in Dune.. Siân Phillips on the other hand, very memorable.
The movie is worth watching again just to see Sean in the black still suit. She is lovely as is Francesca Annis. What a great cast too. Anything Max Von Sydow is in, is worth watching. The same is true with Jurgen Prochnow. I think the film is very underrated.
They are great actors but I would say they couldn't save Dudge Dredd with Sylvester Stallone. eeeeeeeeek

Dune is one of my favorite films, and one of the most epic and ambitious sci-fi films of all time. Sean was terrific as Chani and it's great to see this behind the scenes footage that she put together! Apparently 13 people don't agree that the spice must flow....
I didn't know her character was Max's daughter either. Interesting.
The spice must flow, but we also must be careful with messianic leaders. In this adaptation nobody warned us about that.
Maud-dib himself tried to alter the flow of events and at the end of the first book had apparently succeeded. There is another theme not taken up in Dune alas.
Kyle's hair is the most unbelievable thing in Dune. Imagine keeping that hair as you trek through a desert. Where was he getting the water and conditioner?

I saw Dune when I was 13. Still the only movie that handed you a cheat sheet before you entered the theater so you understood what everything meant.

I saw it a few years after it came out in the UK, on TV, I was probably about 7 years old and I absolutely loved it although I didn't understand it! I was fascinated by it's weirdness, I used to watch it constantly on video, and then all of a sudden I realised that I was terrified of it! Something just suddenly started to upset me and I couldn't watch it again for years, until I finally read the book when I was 15, and I was able to rediscover it. Definitely an underrated classic.
That cheat sheet would have helped! I saw it on cable when I was a teen. Was hard to follow since I had not read the book or anything.

Personally, I love this movie. It has a creepy tension to it which draws you in and holds your attention. I guess it was just too "weird" and perhaps kinky for the mainstream audience.

I can't believe I have only just found this! I have been 'Dune' crazy for almost Thirty years. I wore out two VHS, I have three CD's, one audio book on cassette, a digital download & that many copies of the book I have lost count.Plus all the sequels and preludes.

Dear Sean, you have performed two sublime characters (Rachel & Chani) in two of the most visually groundbreaking Sci-Fi movies of the early 80s : Blade Runner and Dune. These two chefs-d'oeuvres have been in my heart for 40 years now. I have seen various cuts of Dune, official or not, and no matter what cantankerous critics might say, it is a work of art! I have seen the new Dune diptych and it doesn't hold a candle to it. It has no passion, no warmth, no sensuality, (and also... since when the people on Arrakis would actually say the word "Okay" ? Bad writing!) Anyway, your performances are forever in my heart. Thank you.
I came out of the theater after the movie on fire. I loved it. I was a 17 year old dork and I thought it was the greatest thing I'd ever seen. So many good and interesting actors and actresses.

This is so wonderful. You are so wonderful! Thank you for uploading this; it's so great to see this kind of home-footage! Dune is such an important film.. And I'm glad it has this cult classic status now. It's so artful, and cerebral. Qualities that are are lacking in too many new productions. If people try to make a film adaption of Frank Herbert's work again, I'm worried they'll make it into a brand, or a hashtag. I'm glad this is the only film-adaptation of this story at the moment, because the complex and deep nature of the story deserves this level of eccentricity!

I always loved this movie and felt it never got the recognition it deserved. It was perfectly cast; Sting? What a crazy idea...that worked out to be absolutely correct. Sean Young was beautiful but neither prissy nor a weak damsel, Richard Jordan, Max von Sydow, Patrick Stewart and Kenneth McMillan delivered kick ass performances as usual. The evolution of Paul, from spoiled dauphin to rebel leader was wonderful. Literally everyone, Linda Hunt, José Ferrer, Brad Dourif, Virginia Madsen...they were all exceptional, even in the small parts.
The soundtrack was engaging. The film properly balanced spirituality with technology. The production design was top notch. And while some cuts are better than others, none of it is ever boring.
I think the mark of a great film is to construct a world the audience feels is real. Indiana Jones did it, Harry Potter did it, Star Wars did it, and so did Lynch's Dune. Every time I watch it, which is about once a year, I see something new.

I remember watching this movie around midnight in Brea, Ca. I was the only one in the theater and I felt like I was watching the greatest sci-fi movie ever. I still cannot understand why it made so little money upon initial release.
We had a good crowd in our theater and it was well received by the audience. Was years before I heard it didn't make money.

I watched this a few times over the years. Lynch's Dune is still a fascinating art project. Full of atmosphere and strangeness and quite unique as a standalone piece. Beautiful vision and sounds, with eerie peculiarities that never break. To me its a moving painting and great theatre. I think people will watch the film again with a new perspective since the latest films have arrived. Also. Sean Young should be in more films. If this is her channel. Thanks for sharing the footage.

Sean, if you read these comments, thank you for your great performances in both Dune and Bladerunner. Both yourself and Francesca Annis were, and are still, two very beautiful women who delivered exceptionally good performances in your acting on screen in Dune.
I still find that David Lynch’s Dune is an incredible film. I loved it as a teenager and I love it now. There was nothing wrong with the film.
The problem, in my opinion, was that fan base for Dune was relatively small. The general public was probably thinking they’d be seeing another Star Wars, Star Trek, etc. Dune was likely beyond what the average filmgoer could grasp. The film was epic in the true sense of the word. Grand visuals and sounds, the music, all of the actors, absolutely amazing.
That’s the problem I find with the current Dune. It feels like a dumbed down version for the masses. It’s brilliant, looks and sounds great, but I feel like a lot is missing.
The mini- series was fantastic. It fleshed out a lot of the story because it had time to do so.
I know that “sinking ship” feeling. If a feature is bigger than your experience and it starts going sideways, correcting course is futile.
It doesn’t matter how talented, hardworking and professional all the strangers around you are.
Just a few bad decisions made early on begin a multi-butterfly effect on production until you are just a passenger on a ship that everyone thinks you are steering - as it takes on water.
It’s gotta be even worse when making a famous story that you are not allowed to stray from. Not to mention language barriers every way you turn.
I’m glad Lynch somehow survived, healed, and regained his creative footing a few years later with Blue Velvet.

To carry the weight of the first Dune novel will take several films (or a TV series like the one Syfy made), but Lynch knew how to adapt it and made history.
It was ahead of its time because there were already Star Wars, Star Trek and Alien and more. The world wasn't ready for the inevitable epic Dune was.
As a matter of fact, Ridley Scott was a potential director for the movie. He claimed it would have been bigger than (or as big as) Star Wars, I believe him.
Dune was such an amazing movie. One of those 1980's sci fi masterpieces. I mean everything about the movie, the actors, the sets, the vibe of the movie was so strong. It is Dune. And there have been so many things that this movie influenced its not even funny. I wish they made a sequel with the same cast and director. Maybe Dune 2 and 3 kinda put together in one big movie. Just like Blade Runner had it very distinctive look, Dune had its own look and universe.
Yeah I blame a number of things but the studio and distribution hollywood machine ought to take some of the blame. They should have given Lynch his 3 hr movie on a delayed release instead of 2 hrs movie all or nothing.
James Cameron had a directors cut for Aliens, Lynch should have a directors cut for Dune.
Lynch needs to return to directing and get a new Dune movie made...
Lynch does not really direct "big movie" like on this scale anymore. In part because of how this movie came out. Kyle MacLachlan said in one of these youtube documentary that he does not really even talk about Dune, because it was just such a bad experience for him. So we will never get a super directors cut, they probity don't even have the hours of film they shot for the movie anymore.
I totally agree. Lynch's Dune is one of the very few best sci-fi epic films ever made. It has a true artistic approach and heart that is not easy to find in big budget mainstream cinema. But it will always be also one of those rare works whose filmmaker is not happy with the final cut. Same thing with Kubrick's Spartacus. I'd love to see also Dune 2 and 3 from Lynch but this will never happen, cause it would be like asking from Tarkovsky to make a sequel to Solaris. So lets be happy and content that this masterpiece exists, even though Lynch does not approve. On the other hand, one can still find and watch the Unauthorized Extended Edition of Dune, that first came out in 2006 as a special Steelbook Dvd, with many new scenes incorporated. Whatever the case, better stick to the original cut, it's still a grand work of art in itself.

Dune is still one of the best movies I have in my collection. And over the years i have bought Dune 9 times as it has changed from VHS to DVD and directors cut etc.

Dune > Avatar
Was there ever need to compare Avatar to anything? It is a hollow, hyped-up film that people will forget as soon as the next hollow, hyped up film hits the theatres.

unobtainium.....that one word alone is a testament to the level of suckness that is Avatar
Disappointing as Dune was for me back in '84, it is still 10X better than Avatar.
I enjoy nearly all of Lynch's movies but his style of storytelling did not fit well with the expectation of Dune readers. It's a shame so much work and good intentions came off so poorly.
No no no... No and just no. Dune does NOT = Avatar.
DANCES WITH WOLVES = AVATAR.
That footage is so full of light and life ! It's almost like we're part of the crew with you. Those must have been such precious moments. Thank you Sean for sharing that video, and for being part of two of the most iconic SF films of the 80's.

Sean Young, you are an incredibly beautiful woman, both then and today.
In many ways this cult classic is a fascinating film and even at times a great one. It should be of special interest to sci-fi fans in particular. For them, I would say this is a 'don't miss film.' It was certainly a beautiful film to watch and the special effects are stunning
But Lynch WAS making a great movie. Lots of folks still watch it and think of it fondly. If it was made today, when geek culture is celebrated, it would have been a hit. (And thank you Sean for sharing this! You are amazing!)
I've said for a long time that Lynch's Dune was the right film at the wrong time. If we could somehow have that exact same cast, art direction, music but with today's multi-picture deals I have no doubt Lynch could have made a hell of an adaptation. Many of the issues the movie's biggest critics have are the shortcuts Lynch had to take in order to squeeze this incredibly dense book and background information into a singular 2 1/2 hour film.
I loved Sting's wild 80's hair in the movie.
