For me this movie is best in every way: the picture, the mood, the score, the cast and EVERYTHING! David Lynch is a genius!

Sad that this movies has not received the reception it deserved. I agree with your point and would like to add that also the Script is very good. It took the essentials from the book and made a comprehensible Story Out of it. These Elements are also included in the new movies but with far more Screentime.

That was the studio's idea, David Lynch hated the rain addition to the ending, A lot of important moments from the book were cut from the theatrical release due to the film being 4 hours long (which is why Lynch requested that the adaptation should be split into two films) and the studio's interest of wanting a Star wars movie. There is a better version on CZcams that is 3 hours long that restores a lot of deleted scenes (expect Paul's dream of his terrible purpose that you can find on youtube). The only real difference that David Lynch made was that wielding module device.

So much more enjoyable than the re-make. With the script, the set design, the acting choices, Lynch captures the perversity, the fatique, the faded grandeur, just the weirdness of the alternative worlds. They are disorienting. They are cold, harsh, uncomfortable. In the formality of the interactions I feel the heavy influence of Japanese cinema. There is nothing like that in the Villeneuve films. Also the cast. He didn't use "stars", he used actors. Except for Sting, which was a mistake, every single one of them delivers performances you can't look away from. The ending is rushed, which dissipates the mood Lynch constructs, but many incredible films have this problem (a notable example being Altman's Popeye). But that doesn't stop the overall experience from being so much more interesting than the anodyne remakes.

It’s tempting to blame the studio for this train wreck. However, the fact that Lynch never bothered to read the book, says it all.

Lynch said the first thing he did was read the book. Did you watch this video?
