Does spray painting a coil work? Step by step guide and test

- Yes, spray painting a shock coil/spring works. I'm not sure this holds true to every brand or type of spray paint out there, but for the paint and methods I used it worked great. For me, it was far cheaper to buy the three cans of paint rather than send my coil to a powder coating service. I've taken the bike on three rides since painting the rear coil. My riding conditions are pretty harsh with lots of small sharp rocks and compression and so far there is absolutely no damage to the coil. I will update the status of my coil in a few months. Thanks for watching!

Sorry for making the video so unecesarly long, final steps are at 4:25
Definitely wasn't too long for me. This vid really helped me decide to go forward with and paint my coils too. Thank you Andrew
Goodstuff bro! Doing this for my son's bike. Thank you for sharing!
Seeing you go at it with sandpaper made me grateful that my dad got a sandblast cabinet before he died.
Glad you made this vid. I just did a similar job on a spring for my electric unicycle and in the metalcast red. It looks beautiful but had the same concerns as you. Good to see it holds up well!
Great work!
For 38 subs you really have some editing skills. Subbed just for that.
This complimentary comment earned him my sub.
Thanks for the video I’m going to use this on my transmission!
Great video !!
Keep videos coming man
Thanks bud
I missed something . How do you get the spring off and put it back on ?
So does the bottom of the spring simply go unpainted?
Are you still happy with it a dews years later?
Thanks
HOW IS THE PAINT HOLDING UP
I have a 1999 kx 125 rear shock that I am wanting to do. Did you rebuild the shock when you had it apart?
No all I did was take the coil off
@@andrewschwartz_ ok
Hye, does rhe paint crack after time of use? Im afraid to have a go because you know the spring compress and all, thank you, great tutorial btw!
A year later the paints still holding up. As long as you take your time I'd say the spray paint holds up just as well as powder coating
Does it look the same until now i want to paint mine in Candy Red
Yep it's held up better than I imagined. No damage at all
hey what is the difference between normal spray paint and spray paint that is made to be a base coat? is it just a primer?
Been a while since I last looked at the can, but if I remember right the color coat is slightly transparent, so the primer/base will show through.
I used brush on paint stripper to remove all my paint, then glass media blasting finished it off, inside the coil and out. You didn't demonstrate flipping the spring to paint the base coil and full coverage of your top down paint application.
Is the color still holding up? Do you still own the bike?
Yeah it's hiding up great
How is it holding up bro? Any chipping due to compressing?
No not at all. Rocks, pressure washer, jumps, it's all still there
@@andrewschwartz_ Good to hear! Thanks
How has it held out
Great. Haven't been riding my bike a lot recently, but after 2 years of frequent riding there was no damage.
Soooo, it has been more than 2 years :) How's the paint holding up?
Great. It’s protected from the back wheel, so there’s not really any risk of rocks unless you get roosted by another bike. As far as from compression, still no cracks or flakes in the paint. Just use a good quality spray paint and don’t take any shortcuts and it should be fine.
@@andrewschwartz_ Thanks for the quick reply and advice! And best wishes from Ukraine riders ;)
You never showed what it looked like on the bike in good light!
Sorry I kinda rushed the last part of the video but I looks identical to the stock 2020 crf250 if you search some images up. Paint is still holding up fine and looks the same as when it did a few months ago
Is it permanent?
yeah it's not coming off unless you sand or strip it off. If you want temporary you can try plastidip
