    I love Pele's smile after he told the story of when he and Garrincha played together, Brasil never lost. It was smug, but at the same time it wasn't arrogant. It was pride and kind of matter-of-fact. It was awesome.

      Sadly, Mane Garrincha was an alcoholic, to a fault... it affected his health, big time... nonetheless, he's my favorite player of all time. Ode to breakin ankles, sometimes, three defenders at a time. During his time with the Brazil national team, he was #1 assists and the greatest dribbler in the world. He literally had defenders tripping over each other in every game he ever played and he played happy... Popolo Allegre... the joy of the people.

    The 4-2-4 formation wasn't new in 1958. It was the formation used by the Golden Team of Hungary in 1954. In fact, one of the trainers of then great hungarian team of Honved Budapest moved to train Sao Paulo FC (I think). He imported the 4-2-4 formation there and it was soon adopted by a lot of teams all the way up to the national side.
    Brazilian then perfected it and added their own touch, but that football was inspired by the hungarians of the 1950s.

      You are right to say Brazil have played better football than anyone else and produced better players. Brazil do need to learn how to defend corners at the world cup. When they fail to do that they get eliminated.

    • @Giorno.
      @Giorno. Před 5 lety +1

      It's not that they don't know how to defend corners. It's that corners are almost the only way opposing teams have a chance of scoring against Brazil, given Brazil's vast superiority in open play. By the way, even though Brazil was the favorite for this world cup they put their odds at less than 25% of winning, so not winning was very expected. Winning a world cup today is much harder than it was in 1958-1962, not only because teams got more competitive but now they study Brazil in depth before they play a match Brazil, unlike in 1958-1962 (because Brazil is already a legend now as well). Also, the tournament format today makes it harder for a favorite to win because of the fact they use extensively rounds of elimination today: a team has to win 4 elimination games straight before winning the cup so it is much more likely than an upset will occur. While in 1970 they used two group stages.

    • @wonjubhoy
      @wonjubhoy Před 5 lety +3

      Look at games when Brazil got knocked out at the world cup. Portugal in 1966, Italy in 1982, France in 1998 (twice), Holland in 2010, Germany's 1st goal in the 7-1 game in 2014 and Belgium's 1st goal in 2018. You can't afford to neglect the defence. Brazil conceded goals from corners in all of these games that ended their interest in the world cup.

    There were two particulars on this narrative :
    1. Host nation won WC1930, Host Nation won WC1934, so Brazil hosting WC1950 thought along the same line.
    2. There was a trend that European team won in WC staging in Europe and SA team won in WC staging in SA. It had been that way in 1930, 34, 38, 50, 54.
    Sweden hosted in 1958, presumably European teams had the big advantage.

Pelé and Garrincha were reserves,our coach had them out, saying Pelé was to young and Garrincha wasn`t feet to play because he had a mental problem besides not a team player.After the first two matches,Didi,Nilton Santos and Bellini the captain called Feola the coach,Brasil would play Russia for a meeting. Well they were the players that own Brazil team on the pitch , right way they said we want Pelé and Garrincha to start the game. Feola said no , he was the coach and so on. Their answer was you are the coach but we own the team and we know better. He gave in and they start and played the entire match. Brazil won neither one score but the assists for the two goals came from them. Next game Brazil play against Wales won by one goal scored by a 17 years old kid. Than came France the favorite to win the WC since thy had Fontaine, consider by Europeans the best player in the world,Brazil beat France 5 to 2 three goals by Pelé. Final again same score Pelé 2 goals and a pass to Vavá. Without Pelé Brazil would not win 1958 and you are so blind, must be Portenho and never 1970.
