I met with Ferenc Puskás once in my life on a train station in Budapest - Keleti. I am Hungarian, and I was about 22 on that time. He asked: Hey, my son, do you play football? I told: yes, of course uncle Feri! He sad: It is very god, very-very good my sons... Always play football, always... :)

The final of the 1954 Soccer World Cup was played on July 4 at the Wankdorfstadion in the city of Bern, Switzerland. The party is also known as the Miracle of Bern. The two winners of the semi-final matches, West Germany and Hungary, meet in a single 90-minute match. Against all problems, West Germany defeated Hungary 3: 2 and became World Champion for the first time in its history.
West Germany's victory sparked jubilation there, nine years after the end of World War II. This sporting event helped the German economic miracle that saw the rise of the Federal Republic of Germany, in addition to increasing the nationalist spirit and self-esteem in that country.

I was fortunate enough to visit Budapest, and was awestruck by the place. No attempt had been made to remove the signs of the 1956 invasion by the Russians. Shell marks were still in evidence on the walls of many buildings. Magical Magyars.

Too bad no one mentioned the influence the Hungarians had on Brazilian football in the 1950s... One of the coaches of the Hungarian Hónved team, Bela Guttman, coached São Paulo FC in the 1950s and popularized in Brazil the 4-2-4 formation used by the Hungary Golden Team... later used to great success by the Brazilian teams of 1958 and 1962.

Bella Guttman was so good that he had a wall when he trained São Paulo, he draw several squares on the wall and he demanded the São Paulo's players to hit the ball on each square, he wouldn't release any player of shooting the ball until each one of them hit the right spot of each square, São Paulo's players became so good in passing the ball, they hardly ever had a wrong pass. This way he influenced the tactical mindset of Vicente Feola Brazilian coach in 1958 world cup who was Bella Guttman's assistant in São Paulo in 1957. Brazilian squad in 1958 had great passers with this kind of mindset: Didi, Djalma Santos, Zagallo, all playing in the 4-2-4 system deployed by Vicente Feola influenced by Bella Guttman. As Argentinian football with Maradona, as Brazilian with Pele, as Dutch with Cruyff, as German football with Beckenbauer, as Italian football, as English football as Romanian football with Hagi, as Bulgarian football with Stoichkov, as Polish football, as Swedish football, as Greek football etc!
Puskas lived many years in Greece and my grandparents have met him many times! He used to sit in a bakery cafe in their neighbourhood!
If someone is NOT Hungarian, Spanish or Greek, can not understand what we think about this GREAT LEGEND!

Something about the total football: the ball was passed to Puskas by Czibor, from the position of the RIGHT winger, who was the LEFT winger as a totally RIGHT foot player and Puskás scored from the position of the RIGHT midfielder when he was a LEFT attacking midfielder. You can't see in this video, but Czibor (the LEFT winger) has got the ball from the RIGHT winger (Budai) and one can see after the celebration of the goal that Kocsis (the real RIGHT attacking midfielder) was in the allegedly position of Puskás as a LEFT midfielder, waiting for the pass to goal.
      Check-mate.
What is left from this video: how beautiful people these guys were. I'm a Hungarian, and i saw and read a lot of documentaries about Puskás. His best friend was Bozsik (the defending midfielder) since childhood, but when reporters asked Puskás who is the best international friend he named always two guys: Billy Wright and Fritz Walter. When he was the coach of the - then - nonamed greek Panathinaikos and led them straight into the final of the Champions League against the Ajax (led by Cruyff) one of his player's mom got cancer. Puskás asked Billy Wright to help, what he selfevidently did, and the mom of his player cured in UK and made her to live 12 years more.
That kind of people were Billy Wright and Puskás.
      THAT is football.

Born Polish and have lived in America for 38 years. Have been analyzing games of the greatest national and club teams for years. As a result, I have a great collection of famous games, which you can't buy any more. Well, even though I have been partial towards Brazil, I must admit that the Hungarians of the 50's were the best team ever played. They were cheated of their world cup twice; First, in the final game of 54 cup by the referee, second, by the Russian invasion. Because of this, they did not make it to Sweden in 58. I feel bad for the great Hungarian players and great Hungarian nation for this tragedy. To me you will always be the best.

Yes it was arguably the greatest football team of all time if not for the unexpected shocked 3-2 defeat to West Germany in the 1954 World Cup final at the Wankdorf Stadium at Berne,Switzerland.
Hungary or the "Mighty Magyars" as they are affectionately known were the hot overwhelming favourites to win the 1954 World Cup as they came to Switzerland with impressive credentials and that included the mauling of England at Wembley 6-3 and at the Nep Stadium,Budapest 7-1 inside six months from 1953-1954.
But for the unfortunate tackle on skipper Ference Puskas which resulted in a swollen ankle in Hungary's 8-3 win over West Germany a fitter Puskas would have aided Hungary to Word Cup victory in 1954.
That swollen ankle was costly but then Hungary were playing very well in their quarter final and semifinal win over Brazil and holders Uruguay by 4-2 margins.
But the brawl with Brazil in the infamous "Battle of Berne" did affect Hungary psychologically and with Uruguay they were almost a whisker away from imminent defeat but two extra time headed goals saved the Hungarian.Hungary and the defending champions Uruguay were playing perhaps one of the greatest World Cup matches of all time with both yielding nothing.
The same opponents whom Hungary had defeated met in the final but West Germany were a different team this time around after their 6-1 annihilation of Austria in the semifinals.
And what a tragedy for Hungary as within minutes they took a 2-0 lead only for the West Germans to level at 2-all and Helmut Rahn scored the winner.
That 1954 World Cup final defeats is the only defeat Hungary suffered in an otherwise unblemished unbeaten record from 1950 to 1956.And even after the 1954 World Cup final defeat Hungary were still unbeaten including a 4-2 win over Scotland at Hampden Park.
But then the Hungarian uprising in October 1956 broke up Europe's finest ever post war national team. Many of the Hungarian players including Puskas and Koscis fled abroad.

The Hungarians showed the world that it is possible to be big even as a small nation. The golden team remained undefeated in 42 matches over 4 years. The Hungarians launched a revolution against the oppressive communist regime, with this revolution they hammered the first nail into the coffin of communism, the last nail was hammered into the coffin in 1989, and that's when the first stone was knocked out of the Berlin Wall.

(By "chemistry" I mean the simple fact, if you see the game film, that the Germans were running FASTER during the second half than they did the first. It is anyone's guess what that doctor injected them with when he was in the locker room during half time. The finest and perhaps the greatest all time national football team in Association Football
They could have deserved to accolade as the greatest team in Association Football and the World Cup.
But for that tragic and unfortunate 1954 World Cup final defeat to West Germany at Berne Switzerland. It was this blot on an otherwise perfect unbeaten record from 1950 to 1956.
Yes the "Mighty Magyars" arguably would and could have been the greatest ever national football team in history.
They had prior to the 1954 World Cup finals in Switzerland had raked in thirteen goals against England at Wembley and in Budapest just inside six months.A 6-3 win at Wembley in late November 1953 was followed by a crushing 7-1 win at the Nep Stadium in late May 1954.
They even scalped Scotland 4-2 without much difficulty.
They arrived in Switzerland as the overwhelming favourites.
A 9-0 win over South Korea was followed by a 8-3 win over West Germany.Seventeen goals in two matches then eight more in the quarterfinal and semi final with Brazil and Uruguay respectively.
Uruguay ran them close in the semifinals but they prevailed 4-2 in extra time.
Puskas came back for the final but was not fully fit.The West Germans capitalized on it to eventually win 3-2.
If not for that single defeat Hungary would have and not Brazil 1970 team the greatest team of all time.
