Why Building Transit First Is A Good Idea

- A few years ago, the internet was set ablaze by this picture of Caojiawan metro station, seemingly leading to the middle of nowhere. Everyone was making fun of China for building metros to nowhere, and claiming that they’re stupid.
Now, here’s the station today. The surroundings have been built up, and the station serves a brand new district.
In this video, we’ll take a look at why building transit first, and the rest later is actually a good idea, with a few case studies, such as the tram line to Dědina or to Slivenec in Prague, Czech Republic.

I agree, usually the city dont have the money before the district gets built, and so its hard to build the transit first. Planning it and making sure no buildings get in the way of a future line is neccesary.
Maybe you should make a video about fast tram systems, theyre a good middle ground between metro and tram
A good future idea, but the 2 next uploads will be this:

@@TheTramly yes, Ive seen the poll
100%! When transit is added last, you exclude large groups of people from living in or visiting new areas.
Agreed!
There is another important advantage; If the government buys the land from the farmers first at a rate a bit above normal rates for farmland in the area and then builds the transit and then sells the land to high and mid rise developers, they can get a lot more for the land then what they paid for it, offsetting part or all of the costs of transit construction. However, this process takes several years that the government has to bridge financially and politically. Which might be a problem in some areas.
Actually, I will expand upon this topic in a future video!
This is exactly OPPOSITE of what we do in America: we overpay for land, build complete stations (with massive parking adjacent of course) & routes, operate trains to empty stations in the middle of nowhere, sell the appreciated land for less than the agency paid AND provide $ incentives to charge higher prices for tenants! Great video Tramly! I just think that the line could have been extended one more stop, crossing the k barandovu road and serving the residents that already live there better and opening up even more land for dense development. Now it's about a 600m walk from the stop to the edge of Slivenec, which is not a problem for young and healthy people, but i can imagine it being a problem for older people
That is true, they could've as well extended the line to the houses
Trolleybus to Odolena Voda? Well, that will be fun
(For context, aero Vodochody is located near and lots of buses are packed with people trying to get there and to logistic park near to it. )
Great video, i hope that terminal near to aeroport will be done soon
glad you liked it! yeah, i hope the airport train line, and Terminál Dlouhá Míle will be done soon, it's about time
excellent video as always!
Thank you!
Tohle je dokonalý video určitě v tom pokračuj :D
Děkuji! Určitě budu, další video bude o tom jak návštěvuju všechny stanice metra C
@@TheTramly Cčko moje milované Nádraží Holešovice, Vltavská mmmmhhhmmm perličky XD (stanice nejsou zas tak špatné jakožto občan Holešovic je používám obě dost často ale to okolí a divnolidi 💀😫)
ach ano, divnolidi v mhd, univerzální zážitek každého Pražáka🗿🗿🗿
heard the pedestrians connections to new stations were shit from the old single family parts of the district. also pretty sad about the P+R being built, extremely cost inefficient, and no one is incentivized to use them. they could've built bike and ride instead, to boost the transit ridership, for people from the villages. something that used to be common in CSSR.
It's a shame that B+Rs are not getting built, but it's still a step in the right direction
This is very positive change in last years, I absolutely hate buses and when you don't have metro station, there is nothing better than to build a proper tram line into new housing estate. It has high capacity, you know where it is going (because you see where tracks lead to) and it's not bumpy as buses where you will lose your teeth. And these new tram lines mostly have at least partly separate line only for trams with no cars before it gets more close to center, which makes it really fast, trams can go up to 60 km/h on these new lines, that's really fast when you compare it to waiting in traffic jams in buses or cars.
I don't like that Holyně housing estate look, it's that new trend with fences and signs "residends only" everywhere (old communist blocks are better), but that's not fault of public transportation company or politicians who are responsible for public transit I guess, these are doing really good job in last few years.
I agree, the tram to Slivenec is mostly great, although I do agree that the "residents only" shtick rubs me the wrong way as well
Nice video.
Ps: it kinda feels like your voice is a bit robotic
Thank you!
And about the voice, yeah, i know, I sound kinda dead inside..
I'm trying to get better though! I'm trying to speak in a less monotone, more lively manner
@@TheTramlyyay :)
It's hypocritical to mock building public transit to a new development because no one bats an eye when it's a road or highway offramp.
I agree, that's a massive double standard
