Fix Panasonic Plasma TV Vertical or Horizontal Bars

- This video covers how to fix a Panasonic 42" Plasma TV model TH-42PX600U that has vertical distorted or solid black bars. This fix may also apply to other Panasonic Plasma TVs models as well as other Plasma TV manufacturers. Most Plasma TV's have a similar design and therefor can be effected by a similar problem (poor ribbon cable connection).
A similar fix is possible for horizontal distorted or solid black bars on your Plasma TV. Instead of cleaning & reseating the ribbon on the bottom of the TV, you clean & reseat the ribbon on the left (or right) of the TV corresponding to the bad row.
It has been over four years since I made this video and the problem has not returned. The TV picture quality is great. I hope others have similarly long lasting results.

Okay, just wanted to say thank you for keeping this extremely helpful video up. We've had a 58" Panasonic TH-58PZ700U since 2007 and it's a beautiful tv. Well we were getting an intermittent black bar showing up in the upper half of the tv slightly to one side for long periods of time. Sometimes it flickered, sometimes it was solid and other times it would go away. We called a tv repair service but they no longer came to our town and we were also told there were no parts to be had for such an old tv. Well, we figured it was a connection issue not a bad part and then found your video. It helped immensely. I cleaned the associated ribbon contact points with 70% iso alcohol with a cotton swab and then wiped it clear with a coffee filter to remove any fibres that could have deposited on the contract points. I let it dry and carefully reconnected everything and voila! The bar is gone and we can enjoy our lovely tv and not have to worry about spending thousands on a new one. Thank you so much!
That's great! I'm glad my video helped you out and kept your TV running.
Hey there :) I just want you to know that even though this video was older, it was very helpful. I also had a Yellow Bar, same size on the opposite side. Its my Garage/Shop TV, a 60" mounted up on the wall. Its a nice feature.. so I was disappointed when the bar appeared. But, after some research and watching your video - I also pulled the TV down - and cracked it open. First, I used a small vacuum (as suggested in the comments), and got rid of the majority of dust. Then I made sure to use an air compressor and blasted it (1/2 pressure)carefully around the entire circuit board and ribbons. I crossed my fingers - attached the back and it worked 100% Thanks for sharing this experience with us - It helped me in fixing it in time for the game!
Thats great! I'm glad my video helped you out.
Thx
@Purple Rose Congrats!

It must now be more than a year since our venerable, and now 12 year old, Panasonic 50" plasma developed the horizontal, oops sorry, vertical distorted bar pattern problem on the left hand side of its screen. And almost that long since I found and watched this video. Today I finally decided to stop putting up with the issue, got off my backside, and using the advice shown, opened up the set and fixed the problem. So our old battleship plasma, though now relegated to second line duty, lives to fight another day. I'm a very happy bunny. So cheers Pet Rock's Garage, your video was a massive help, and you are a star!
Better late then never. I'm glad my video helped you out and that it worked out for you. Mine is still running strong all these years later (also on second line duty).
THANK YOU! I was able to fix my 50" model following this video. The first time I made the bar twice as wide, but the second time I got it!
Thats great! I'm glad my video helped you out.
I have a 46" Panasonic plasma TV for years. There had been a 2-inch-wide dark vertical band in the centre intermittently since a few years ago. I referred to your steps and unplugged the corresponding cable in the bottom centre, cleaned the dust around, plugged it back and the problem has now gone. Thank you so much for your sharing.
Thats great! I'm glad my video helped you out.
Just finished fixing my 50' Plasma from 2008! Amazing tutorial. The internals are a little different but your instructions are so good that I managed to find the needed part
Thats great! I'm glad my video helped you out.
It worked perfectly just as you described on my 2010 42" Panasonic Plasma TV. Much better than shopping for a new LED TV! Many thanks.
Thats great! I'm glad my video helped you out and saved you some $$$.
Thanks for this. My Dad had a vertical bar problem with a different model Panasonic. We watched your vid and got bold enough to attempt a repair last night. Reseating the ribbon connector cleared it right up.
That’s awesome! Thanks for watching and letting me know it helped you out. I appreciate it.
Thanks for posting. I tried this today with my 2009 Panasonic 42" Plasma television. A 2" pink vertical line appeared from top to bottom in the center of the screen a few days ago. I did exactly as the video suggested, and my tv is now perfect!
I’m glad to hear this video helped you out. Thanks for watching and the comment. I appreciate it.
I have this exact problem. Was it easy to fix? And was it a permanent fix?
Pet rock, you da man. Fixed the vertical bar problem after a hour of work thanks to you. Saved me quite a bit of coin. Thank ye sai.
+Kuzna22, glad to be of service.
It's awesome this vid has helped so many people - now including myself! All the best to you sir! Hope life is treating you well!
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it. Hope things are going well for you too.
❤just want to say thank you very much as I was also able to fix the vertical😂😂😂 black line and hoover 14 years of dust. Very thoughtful of you to share ❤
Thats great! I'm glad my video helped you out.
Count myself in with everyone else. Wanted to send a BIG thank you for you sharing this video as it fixed up my 42" Panasonic Viera. Useful walkthrough and I was able to clean out/reseat the applicable connections (the unclip step was so useful!) Now, my TV that had a vertical line is completely fixed, at least for now! Like others, I'd grown used to the line. Thanks so much! Much appreciated.
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it. I'm glad my video helped you out.
Hey is the line still fixed?
I’m considering doing this but if it’s only temporary I don’t know if I should
@@hmankman2793 Not sure if you're responding to the video author or myself, but I can say that 10 months in, yes, my TV is still holding up nicely and the vertical hasn't reappeared, so I say it's worth a shot!
@@blinddog1212 alright I’ve started now lol. Hopefully I don’t break it.
I bought a different Panasonic flat-screen TV with the same problem but I use the same technique and it worked like a charm, thank you.
Thats greats! I'm glad to hear it.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
Thats for watching & the comment. I appreciate it. I hope it helped you out.
Fixed a horizontal (I mean vertical) green bar on my 42in plasma Panasonic TV. Thank you for the video, it was a great help!
+Gregory Kelton, thanks a lot. I appreciate it.
Well, my turn to thank you. 2008 Panasonic Viera Plasma with a a pink/purple vertical line. Opened it up and cleaned out about 10 years of dust. Reseated the ribbon cable clamps as you showed and it is running perfect. No vertical line! Thanks for saving this TV and some money. Great video!
Thats great!! I'm glad my videos helped you out. Thanks for watching & commenting. I appreciate it.
Awesome fix, thank you. My tv has had this same occasional black bar for a loooooong time. sent it to be fixed while it was still under warranty was ok for about a month and then it came back. Did this easy fix 2 days ago and I havent seen the bar since.
Glad to hear this video helped you out. Mine has been problem free for 4 months and counting. Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it...
I watched your video awhile back as my lcd tv in my bedroom had a green tinge to the whole screen, we couldn't afford a new TV at the time and didn't really want to go back to an old tube tv we had laying around after getting used to the lcd!:)
Anyways I pulled off the cover sprayed with air and cleaned all the ribbon cable connections I could find, I wiped with alcohol pad then reinserted them and BAM is been 3 months since and looks better then it did new!
Now I have my in laws lg 42" that has a red vertical line going down the screen, going to attack it tomorrow hopefully it work's as well as lady time.
Great video.
+Phil Peterson, thats great you were able to fix your TV. Good luck on the in-laws TV.
This advice helped me fix a vertical line problem on my 2010 Viera 50", thanks a ton!
No problem. I'm glad my video helped you out.
mine is the same model as yours, but the black vertical is in the middle. I am going to try it soon.
I have viera plasma 50" too. My vertical band is not black, it's like error decode or something moving from the top to down. After approx 5 min, my screen goes error with full of colorful vertical band and the remote will stop functioning. Anyone knows how to repair it?
Thank you thank you thank you a million times. It worked for my tv & thank you again because I can't afford a new tv. You da man!!
Great!!! I’m glad it worked.
I followed your instruction step by step and I have a very nice 42" TV!! Thank you!!
Thats great! I'm glad my video helped you out.
This worked for me and resolved a pink, flickering vertical line that had been annoying me for years. Thank you!
Thats great! I'm glad my video helped you out and got your TV working again.
My vertical black bar started from the top of my screen but only went down 3 quarters... so, I followed you instructions to reseat the ribbon, but at the top end. It worked!!! Thanks man :)
Thats great!!! Glad to hear it.
Thanks a lot for this video. I fixed my Panasonic TV today after watching your video. I to had a vertical black line on my screen. I wiped the ribbon with a lent free cloth and alcohol. I also got out the shop vac and sucked out all the dust on the fans and vent holes. The picture is perfect now. Thanks so much again !!!
Awesome!!! I’m glad this video helped.
We recently purchased a second hand 65" TV. It was working fine for a day until a faint line started to appear and then gradually getting worse. I was spewing. I watched your video and followed it step by step. Funnily enough when I unlocked the ribbon from the computer board I found a 2inch hair in their. I removed it and instead of using a air duster (spray can) I used a vacuum. Put it back together and the tv was perfect. We haven't had a problem since. Thanks heaps for the video! Highly recommended :)
+Marie O, thats great!!! I’m glad my video helped you out and you got your TV fixed. btw, your TV is HUGE!!!!
I did exactly what you did and my tv works perfect again! Thank you very much! almost bought a brand new tv...
Thats great!!! I'm glad my video helped you out.
Thank you for your explanation on what the cause was and how to fix it. I've learned something new today.
Thanks a lot. I'm glad my video helped you out. Thanks for watching & commenting. I appreciate it.
You helped me out and I was able to fix a flickering vertical (or is that horizontal?☺️) bar on a Panasonic viera plasma. Thanks for taking the time to share you're experience!
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it. I’m glad my video helped you out.
This was a huge help to me. I had a similar problem but with discoloration. This video contained enough info so that I was able to clean it up and solve the problem. Thanks again!!
Glad to hear the video helped you out.
My tenants skipped out on rent and cleanup...my small blessing, they left this 📺 with a nasty horizontal...oops, I mean vertical black bar. I can’t wait to fix this and mount it in my garage! Thanx bro! 😎👍
Wow, good luck. Hope it turns into a windfall for you.
Thanks for the video. We just fixed our TV! Cheers and merry Christmas.
Congratulations!!! I'm glad the video helped. Merry X-mas to you too.
I just finished putting my 50" plasma back together and it's good as new. The vertical band is gone! Thank you very much for the video.
Thats great! I'm glad my video helped you out.
thank you very much, just saved my tv from going to the dumpster!dirt is not the problem, clamping force on ribbon wire is .never the less you saved my tv and saved me 1200$
Thats great! I'm glad my video helped you out and saved you some $$$.
Thank you very much for posting this video. Your solution allowed me to fix my 10+ year old 54" Panasonic plasma TV. I had a partially pink vertical bar on my screen, but programming content was still visible underneath the bar. Your description of how to unlock the ribbon is very valuable. It's not intuitively obvious how that lock works. My first attempt at readjusting the cable resulted in a vertical black bar with nothing visible underneath - as if I had left the cable unplugged. My second attempt worked great. I had lived with the pink vertical bar for years. It is very satisfying to fix something like this myself for free. Thanks again!
Incidentally, don't feel bad about getting the X and Y axes mixed up. My wife always gets left and right mixed up.
Thats great! I'm glad my video helped you out. I completely agree on how satisfying DIY work is.
Amazing video, fixed my vertical lines on my samsung plasma! Glad I watched this before almost throwing the tv away
Thats great! I'm glad my video helped you out and saved you some cash.
Brilliant video , I followed your instructions and the line is cleared. Thank you very much.
Thats great! I'm glad my video helped you out.
Thanks for this video! Just fixed our television. I wasn't ready to part with it yet! 🙂
Thats great! I'm glad my video helped you out.
Hey Pet Rock's Garage,
Super helpful video, you just saved my hide, not to mention my wallet! It fixed my virticle blue line issue on my Panasonic TH-42PV60A.
Good work I really appreciate your generosity, Thanks

Glad to hear it worked (at least for a little while)
Thank you so much for posting this. You saved me roughly 500 dollars!

G’day from Oz! Worked like a dream mate. Cheers, I owe you a beer!
Thanks. I'm glad my video helped you out. Beer is good... and stuff... czcams.com/video/O-jOEAufDQ4/video.html
@@petrocksgarage so I came for a t.v. fix and left with a song looping in my brain. BEER IS GOOD BEER IS GOOD!🍺🍻 Gotta love youtube. I'm nervous about the capacitors. My bar(not the good kind...beer is good) is in the dead center. More screws. *sigh* beer is good.
@@ellenh278, yeah, that song is a bit of an ear worm. A lot of Psychostick's songs are like that. They are amazing live. If you liked that song, here is another on the topic of beer from my buddies band (The Devil In California): czcams.com/video/yKRqcotheik/video.html
Re your actual question: I wouldn't be worried about the capacitors. Just take your time and be gentle with the electronics components and you should be fine. Good luck.
SuperChucky63 i live in australia and have never in my life spoken like this
Thank you for posting this!
no problem
I saw a 50-inch Samsung Plasma with a horizontal black line across the entire upper area of the screen. I might be worth the $75 investment as a second TV. I have not tried your instructions since it's still at the store, but I am impressed by your presentation. Congrats.
A 50” TV for $75 is a bargain. At worst you could sell it for parts and make your money back. If the black line is horizontal, then the ribbon cables you want to look at would be on the right or left side of the TV. Vertical lines are controlled by ribbon cables on the top or bottom of the TV, like in my video. Good luck...
Thanks, appreciate your input, no pun intended...
Hey, THANKS Pet Rock!!! The old plasma still lives, 10 years and still going thanks to you!
Thats great to hear! So is mine, btw. I'm glad my video helped you out.
Nice vid bud, very clear and most helpful, thanks a bunch dude ^_^

I want to thank you very very much I had the same black bar down the middle of my screen I did what your tutorial explained and it worked thank you very much
Thats great! I'm glad my video helped you out. Thanks for watching & competing. I appreciate it.
This video is the most promising I have seen to help me fix my vertical line problem.
Tried before but didnt realise some connections are behind the speaker box. So I didnt get to them.
I'm glad my video helped you out. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
I had a thin vertical line that would change from green to red to black, etc. after extensive time messing with remotes and resetting all to factory settings, etc, it turned into like the big black line you have on your video. Does that sound like the same problem? I am a little hesitant to try this without any electronic experience. Thanks.
Thank you for posting this video. I have an LG plasma and because of your awesome video was able to fix it in an hour. A little different set up - but pretty much same principals apply! Thanks so much again !
Scarlet V, no problem. I’m glad it helped you out. Thanks for watching & commenting. I appreciate it.
what is best for cleaning contacts
I just fixed my 2010 p42g25 with your help. Thanks!!
Thats great! I'm glad my video helped you out.
Thanks so much for uploading this! Mine had this problem for a long while, but then "magically" stopped for months. It's back today, though. I have one question: My line is very close to the center of the TV--just to the left of the "Panasonic" written at the bottom. Is there anything else I'll need to remove to get to that connector?
Thanks, man! I also have a 42" Panasonic Plasma (different model, but close enough) with this same problem. Alas, mine is a vertical (aka horizontal...hilarious) column dead center down the middle, so I'm concerned that more tear-down might be necessary (based on what I saw in your video).
In any case, your video was a really quick way for me to know instantly that the problem was with the itself, and not with my PC, stereo, or HDMI cables. Long story short... even if nothing I do fixes the problem, you saved me a whole pile of trouble-shooting time!
Thank you.
Thanks. I’m glad my video helped you out. There is a similar board with ribbons on it that is on the left or right side of the TV that controls the horizontal (serious) pixels. You likely need to find the corresponding ribbon on the right or left side and reset it. Good luck...
Pet Rock's Garage last Panasonic tv 5 blink question was for you pal
Yeah, i know. I replied to it. If you have questions or want to make a comment about the video its best to start your own comment rather then reply to someone elses. Thanks.
FYI this worked like a charm (different model Panasonic plasma) thanks for the info.
+Mike Natale, no problem. Glad it helped.
I will need to try this, as I have the black bar problem.
Thank you for posting this.
+Greig Reilly, no problem and good luck.
Well, I did everything that you did, mixed results. The black bar now only appears sometimes, flickery. Don't want have to keep pulling it apart. Just have to live with it I suppose.
Thanks again.
Greig Reilly, if the bar only appears sometimes, then you definitely made an improvement and the problem is/was a loose connection. There may be more then one. Next time it shows up, try giving the back of the TV a smack (mild/medium force), a.k.a. a "technical tap”, and see if it improves/changes. If it does then it definitely is a loose connection. Good luck...
Thank you! Despite your deep seated need to say the word horizontal when you mean vertical, this video totally just saved my ass!
Yeah. sometimes your mind gets stuck on one word. I'm glad my video helped you out.
excellent advice, for those who have a vertical line problem, since the description of the connector removal is vital. a credit is due for the explanation and action. Certainly the grounding of oneself to the tv metal work before touching anything. A very good - powerful vacuum cleaner tube, and a paintbrush used at the same time, will remove external dust on components and on everything under the cover. Cleaning the connector terminals with a not contributing thing - like a quality artists fine paintbrush using pure alcohol is just as important since micro fibres, like dust, can stop connection between such fine strips as the connector uses.. My panasonic viera 50 inch, has 15 vertical line connectors, and my line was in the middle. So, i took apart connectors 7 and 8 to be sure of the line inclusion. - i expected to have chosen the wrong 7 and 8, since 15 means an odd number.. i also opened but did not disconnect all the connectors, and snapped them shut again... and on reassembly and power up, the line was gone... :) Therefore, on my experience, i recommend this post of Pet Rock`s Garage.
Good tips and thanks a lot. I appreciate it.
thanks for the info I fallowed your steps and my TV is working again
+roel boers, thats great!!! I’m glad you got it fixed.
It worked!! Thank you so much.
Thanks. I'm glad my video helped you out.
Good video man, bookmarked for future use as I have a Panasonic plasma from around 2010 (touch wood of course). +1 for the Star Wars title style crawl at the end! :-D
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it.
Excellent video, really interesting! Thanks!
Out of curiousity, have you by any chance tried adjusting voltages to lower your plasma TV's mll (minimum luminance level, or "black level")?
Thanks. I appreciate it.
No, I haven't tried hacking the circuits on my TV. I have, however, used its built in color balance & luminance features to great success. There are various settings & levels I can change on the TV via its own menus system.
Thanks for the video, huge help! I had a similar issue with my Panasonic 42" TC-P42S2. I had vertical pin stripes down a block in the center. TVs are similar enough to get it working again.
No problem. I’m glad it helped.
Great tutorial . Thanks.
+Joaquin Hernandez, thanks I appreciate it.
Where can I find a new panel with new connectors on it? Bc one fourth oh my whole screen has a solid white box and another one fourth had a solid black box next to the white one so only half of my screen is visible. TV is probably screwed but any help?
Zach Johnson, I'm not sure. I'd contact the manufacturer of your TV and get the panel's model number and then use Google to see if you can get it cheaper then from the manufacturer. Good luck...
Omg! this worked for me thank you so much.
+beanie1886, thats great!!! Thanks for letting me know.
I love the term “technical tap”! 😝
That fixes most things - tap aka BANG!
Yes, yes it does. :-)
almost as good as knowing difference between horizontal and vertical....
yeah, almost.
Regardless of your X/Y Axis problem lol - - this was very very helpful. I just got a free plasma that has this very issue. Since i'm a techy - I figured TV's are all the same as computers - so i'm going to give this a shot and see.
Good luck and thanks for watching & commenting. I appreciate it.
Thanks for this. I got rid of a vertical bar on my Panasonic TC-P42S2 by following it. Would not have found the flip up clamps on the ribbon cable without seeing you do ti.

30+ screws later....no more flickering vertical bars!!! Thank you!!!
Awesome!!! I'm glad my video helped you out.
@@petrocksgarage just my luck....it is back. So I am thinking it is one of the chips that needs replacement? What are your thoughts?
I got a couple of these lines appearing on my tv, usually a smack sorts the issue for a while. I'm gonna try this later during the week. thanks for the video
+choffidge, no problem & good luck.
Great video.
thanks a lot...
hello Pet Rock, any idea where a screen ribbon would be located in samsung pn50a400c2dxza? I have a 3 inch solid black vertical bar on the screen and it's only getting wider. I want to give it a try and fix it.
+VJ DANKO, I don't know that specific TV, but the ribbons are typically on the top or the bottom of vertical bars, and right or left of horizontal bars.
2019. Just about to try this on my 58" panasonic viera. I'm kinda excited.
Good luck!
Took the back off. Cleaned 10 years of caked dust. Titened the 4th Ribbon cable at the top. BLACK LINE GONE!! For now lol. Thanks tho. Great video dude
That's great! Glad to hear you got it fixed. If it comes back, you'll know how to fix it again. :-) Mine still hasn't come back after all these years and a couple cross state moves.
Can't wait to do mine! Manufacturer date is December 2007 lol
Great fix. Didn’t take more than an hour and I had inputs in the way. No more colored lines.
Thats great! I'm glad my video helped you out.
I normally don't comment but this video was great showed me exactly how to fix the problem my problem was in the centre of the screen I did as others suggested and used a small vacuum to clean out the dust bunnys and there was a lot, I then used a dry microfibre cloth to wipe away a lot of the remaining dust and I vacuumed again to be sure all dust was removed, I then took off the one ribbon suspected to be causing the problem I cleaned the ribbon and connector with 99% alcohol on a cotton tip, I then reassembled the tv connected the power and has now been working for two days and the line has not returned my tv is a Panasonic TH-P42U20A.I suspect my problem was manufacturer related as the ribbon was not seated straight in the connector allowing dust to enter the connector over the years I have owned the tv.
Big thanks to pet rock's garage for the upload saved me some money and time with a great video
Thanks a lot. I'm glad my video helped you out. Thanks for watching & commenting. I appreciate it.
Hello dear and tnx for this video.I have a question. I have a Panasonic vt20 plasma and there is a vertical bar at the vary left side but it's transparent and you can see the screen behind it .it's also in half of the screen not a full bar.and sometimes it's disappeared and after a while back again.do you think I can fix it with cleaning?or there's something that I should repair? Because in that case I can't repair it and there is not any repair service in the place I live.will be so thankful if you help me.
Yes, if it comes and goes its most likely a loose connection. A cleaning & resetting the connection might help. Good luck.
Great job brother! I have a Panasonic Dinosaur Monitor before they ever came with speakers. I've had it for well over 15 years now and I just got a "horizontal" line across the middle of the screen. I'll try your method and hope I can fix it as well. Wish me luck, thanks again for your video
XxUSMCForceReconxX, good luck. If your line is horizontal then the ribbons you want to check are on the right or left side of the screen. Good luck...
Ok I will try that today when I get home. If it's the panel then tv is probably shot , right?
That connection where black line is which is connected to the c2 buffer board. Could it be the c2 board?
If the ribbon you disconnected is between the panel and the board, and the panel still shows a problem then it is likely a problem with the panel. By disconnecting the panel from the board you isolate the board out of the equation. The panel is the heart of the TV and is usually more expensive to replace then the TV is worth. Mine was quoted as $200 more then I paid for the TV new. Good luck...
Thank u so much for the video , i just wanna ask about the a black vertical thin bar is it the same issue it appear today on my 60 inches LG screen ,
Zaid Farouk, it could be. I can’t say for sure from my keyboard. Good luck...
Thanks for your video. U fortunately the Panasonic I opened up looked different to yours (this one was very flat entire thing was around 2 cm depth at the top) and I tried to have a go cleaning some components with a brush and vacuum but it didn't work. It is 10YO now though and my mother in law was happy to buy a new one so I had a go just incase but thank you for this video. If you have any more recent ones that would be super! All the best.
Sorry it didn't work for you. Even though it didn't look the same inside, the general technique in the video still applies. Clean the ribbon cable connection for the area where the issue is occurring. If it didn't work then the problem wasn't a loose or dirty connection. Glad to hear you got a new TV out if it though.
@@petrocksgarage no worries my friend! Perhaps I needed an air blower or perhaps it was a different cable connection. It's all good though! Thank you :)
Have a viera panasonic 42" plasma, horizontal issues, the middle to the top half of screen section, has grainy faded pixels compared to the bottom half, in the middle of screen, have one horizontal line that changes colors during gameplay at different angles, then goes back to normal until the angle changes. Cleaned the 4 upper half ribbon connectors on the left side, the other 2 on rhe right side, didn't work, the upper half of tv is still faded picture. Any ideas what it could be. My t.v issues are nothing like the issues i have seen on CZcams.
I'm not sure. Since the color changes it definitely sounds like a loose connection. A horizontal line does mean you want to check the ribbons on the left/right. If that doesn't work then it could be the circuit board itself, which are replaceable. Good luck.
My joy was short lived.... After the TV was on for about an hour and a half the dreaded blue line was back ..... Grrrrrrrr!
If it worked, even for a short while, then it means you have a loose connection somewhere. In other words, you can fix it. Take the back cover off and wiggle the ribbon a little and see if the picture changes (even a little). If it does, then the ribbon cable is still loose. If not, try the other ribbon cables, as well as lightly press on the board that the cable attaches to. If the picture changes, even a little, then the loose connection is in the area you are touching. Good luck...
Hey PRG, thanks for a well done vid. Soon I will endeavor to eliminate my green racing stripe and toast you upon completion. And at the same time will see if I can fix the random power down that is happening.
A question, though: You mention that you wiped the ribbon connector off but you didn't say what you used., if anything. Would denatured alcohol be the way to go or do you recommend aerosol contact cleaner?
I am tempted to use the latter in a number of areas but don't know if it's too harsh for delicate electronics. Please advise.
Thanks again!
+Gary Mastro, thanks a lot and good luck. Denatured alcohol or Isopropyl alcohol will work just fine. Contact cleaner should work too, but it may be a little harsh for the plastic coating on the ribbon. Use a cotton swap or q-tip to wipe with. Also make sure that everything is dry before powering it up. If you have a random power down issue, I would concentrate your search in the power supply. Possibly a blown/bad capacitor. Good luck...
my 4k Phillips tv shit the bed on me this morning, so i grabbed a free one of these from fb marketplace....works great except for a black bar along the bottom of the screen..... definitely gonna give this a shot!!
Good luck!
thanks ,very interesting
Thanks.
Good job.
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it.
Hello Pet Rock, thank you so much for this video. My Panasonic Viera plasma is from 2005 and has been going fine all these years, until now. It developed a black band, to my great surprise I found a relevant video, yours. Yesterday I took my TV apart and got to the stage where you release the ribbon clamp thing, the two little white pins. However try as I might I just couldn't get it to release, I've looked as closely as I can to the video but I just can't see how it's done. Is there any chance that you could tell me how it's done?. Do you push the white pins backwards and up or pull them down?. I've tried to do both but nothing happens. Thank you once again.
You mean the connector at around @5:54? If so, and assuming yours is the same as mine, there should be a thin plastic bar (for lack of a better word) going the width of the connector. It's parallel with the board. Pull the bar down with your finger nail 90 degrees (be very gentle) to make it perpendicular with the board. That should release the ribbon cable. Hope that helps.
thanks very helpful
No problem. Glad to be of service.
Thanks man!
XxUSMCForceReconxX, no problem.

I have a 50inch plasma . Had the black 2-3 black line . Found the culprit ribbon but when I unplugged it to make sure it was it. It was half black and half white (white having vertical colored lines) when left unplugged. Any thoughts
White is the default color for most manufacturers (in my experience), so if there is anything other then white in the column when you unplug the ribbon then those pixels are getting a signal from somewhere other then the ribbon you pulled. Most likely its due toto an internal short in the panel itself
With that said, try unplugging the ribbon to the right & left of the one you unplugged and see if they turn solid white.
Hey Pete thanks for opening up your plasma to solve the vertical picture problem. My 42" Panasonic plasma has a mostly blacked out bar but it's only 1/2 way down from the top. The picture bar also shows a little bit of color image with some images. Any ideas before I open it up?
Pet Rock, not Pete. :-) Its hard to say what your issue is without having it in front of me. But if you give the back of the TV a “technical tap" at the top & bottom of the bar and the bar changes then its a loose connection like mine was and this video should help you out. Thanks for the comment & good luck...
Have the same TV, it is a legend! :)
yeah, its a beast. Mine is still running strong.
works like a charm
Thats great! I'm glad my video helped you out.
exelente video muchas gracias
de nada
Thank's for the video. Your comments have led me to do a cleaning in the
ribbon cables connections, that worked fine for solving the faulty
condition I've had, which was a blinking white and vertical bar,
comprehending the half left of the entire screen.
The ribbon cables I've cleaned was not the same you did, but worked. Nor my plasma TV is the same as yours: Mine is: TH-42PZ80LB (Brazil).
I've found a service manual for a similar model (TH-42PV80LB) that was useful for me to be able to locate the components, since they both has virtually the same design.
The ribbons I've cleaned are (according to the troubleshooting manual I said) those ones connected to the SS board, which are placed at the same side of the white bar, the left of the frontal screen (right when you look to the back of the TV opened).

I'm not sure. Its hard to diagnose from my keyboard. Sorry and good luck.

Thanks again, but, unfortunatly, the problem came back and, now, I got that blinking left half of the screen permanently off. Aparently the problem could be in the C2 board or in the conector between the A and D boards, that has very bad conection.
Ouch. Sorry to hear that, hope you get it figured out inexpensively. Good luck.
I have a pink-ish line that comes and goes in the middle of my tv that just started a week before Xmas, would this be the same kinda troubleshooting that I need?
It is possible, especially since it is intermittent. That indicates a loose connection somewhere. Good luck...
Great video. Unfortunately when i looked at the ribbon on mine instead of the strip being silver its gone gold and bubbled like its burnt out. Can i replace this bit?
A burnt out connector is not good. The connector got super hot. It is hard to say what caused it. If the ribbon can be disconnected from both of the boards it is attached to then yes it can be replaced. Where you would get a replacement depends on the TV model & brand. I'd contact the manufacturer. If it can't be removed from one of the boards then the board needs to be replaced. Again, contact the manufacturer. Good luck.
Hey there, I have a similar model of T.V. but I believe that it is a L.C.D. display rather than plasma. Do you think that it is a similar fix? Also the problem that I am having, is that the Right side of the display is displaying more green than usual. Thanks.
Yes, it could be the same problem.
