    My 42 in lg tv looks just like yours did before you started touching the ribbons. Thank you for posting this. Now I know which direction to go. And if mine does the same I'm gonna try like you said to make it happy. Thanks again for posting this video. Its the only one that has the same symptoms I have.

    This is very helpful Simon. Very clear visibility into the modular design of the screen. It seems applicable to many different brand/models. My LCD screen has the left half with random opaque white problem. I tried to open the cover to check inside as you do but could not. There seems to be glue holding the top cover. But just by pushing on the top cover from the front the problem is gone (until it comes back :D). So I believe it's also due to the ribbons as in your video. All I can assume now is bad contact of the ribbons which are basically signal cables. Locking the ribbons by glue/tape or replacing it with a new one may fix the problem properly. Now I need to figure out how to open the top cover first xD

    This was very helpful! Good work, very detailed. Best of luck though, sorry to see that it's the panel that's bad, being that's the most expensive part to replace.

    My lg 42" is doing the exact same thing as this one. I figure it is this one mine as well.. Tv is very old in terms of LCDs so it didn't surprise me it busted. And load and behold it is the same problem you had. Little bit of electrical tape. Going to leave the case off the tv until the tape settles to see if it is fixed. Good video. I was about to take it outside and take my shotgun to it :)

    Hi Simon Pitt thanks a lot for this video it really helped me a lot I had the same problem one side of the TV was blank the other side was working but still had a white line going down on the corner on the good side so I took the TV apart like you said and I use a lollipop stick to put pressure on the LCD cables and it worked this TV has been lying in my spare room for the last 2 year so I saw your CZcams video and I thought I would give it a go myself so I fixed it my TV is a 42 inch Philips thank you so much for the video

    Hi simon, cant thank you enough......my lg 42" tv had the same half screen fault, going completely after month's of playing up and had sat in the spare room collecting dust till I saw your vid. so armed with a bit of knowledge and some inspiration I got to work. I only had one dodgy ribbon cable and it seemed to be the actual board causing it not to sit correctly, the board seemed slightly warped and lifting up so I used so some strips of gaffer tape to hold the board down and job done :-)

  • @SimonPitt
    @SimonPitt  Před 11 lety +5

    I managed to improve it a lot! It took some time to find the "hot spots" where the ribbon needed to be stuck down with masking tape. Once the masking tape had been stuck down solidly and in the right places the TV hardly ever played up. If it did I had cut out small grooves so I could prod the ribbon with the rubber end of a pencil. Not quite as good as new but certainly far better.

    Hi Stuart, I'm glad the video helped :)
    Is your LCD mounted (on the wall) or on it's stand? I think the stand is awful and heavily contributed to the fault as when the TV moves it bends the chassis inside.
    As for the heat gun I'm not sure. What would the heat gun do? I'm not sure how it'd help. You'd have to be very careful too as if you heat the ribbons too much they could crumple/contract/shrink and completely damage the connections. Without a good reason I'd steer clear to be honest.

    Why do you need to use a torch?
    Are the left and right backlights illuminated at the back of the TV when it is turned on? If they are both on then you don't need new inverter boards.
    Have you tried touching the ribbons around the screen to see if that fixes the issue like I do in my video?

  • @AznGothic
    @AznGothic Před 9 lety +2

    The panel for any screen is rather expensive and not worth replacing. You can fix the tabs though (and I don't mean a ghetto repair where you just shove something on it to keep pressure on it). Basically the glue that holds the tab onto the LCD panel separated. You can reheat the glue and apply pressure to the tab while the glue cools down to fix it. Just make sure you don't slide the tab in any direction as the connections are very small and usually take a microscope or video scope to realign.

  • @SimonPitt
    @SimonPitt  Před 11 lety

    Hi Chris,
    Yes I did manage to fix it. I used masking tape to stick the ribbon down to the frame so it could not move and disrupt the signal. It took a few goes to get the masking type in the right position and I did a couple of layers to make it stick firm.
    Find which ribbons are problematic and then try sticking them down.
    Please let me know how you get on.
    Thanks,
    Simon.

    At the time I hadn't seen the reply so I stuck the actual board next to the ribbon down because wasn't sure if I could stick anything to the ribbon and also took advice from another comment and took the foam board from the front of the metal casing and placed it on top where the ribbon is. So far so good but had the same ribbon prob as you. Will let you know if it stops working again but your video was the only helpful one I could find. Thanks you have really helped :-D.

  • @SouvenirDin24
    @SouvenirDin24 Před 10 lety

    If u need to secure the ribbon cable then I recommend those sticky floor protectors you get from pound world. They are normally used for sticking to the bottom of chairs etc to stop scratching laminated flooring. You can get felt ones and ones made out of polystyrene type stuff. When the LCD panel surround is replaced these give enough pressure to keep the ribbon cable in place. I fixed a LG using this method and it lasted 3 years - just developed another fault whereby about three inches on the left hand edge is black when u put the set on with a thin vertical line in it. Sometimes it flashes and u can see the picture, sometimes it's mixed with some of the picture from the right so I'm maybe thinking the t-con board??? Any ideas?? I'll try and upload a video shortly.

  • @SimonPitt
    @SimonPitt  Před 11 lety

    Hi,
    It could be any of the following:
    TCON board
    AV board
    Backlight boards
    Signal cable
    Source device (PS3, Satellite etc.)
    Starting the process of elimination:
    Does the source device work on another TV?
    Does the source device to TV cable work on another device or TV?
    Do all TV inputs (HDMI, SCART etc.) have sound and no picture?
    Do the backlights work when the TV is on?
    Regards,
    Simon.

    Thanks for this demo, I can now assume that one of my driver boards is absolutely dead. My TV (LG 60LB6100-UG) has 4 of these boards, each responsible for 1/4 of the screen. The far right shows a rainbow distorted image (garbled) and unplugging it from the ribbon chain results in that portion of the screen going pure white. That means the backlight and panel (pixels) are fine, but the driver board is toast and can't process a correct image on that part of the screen anymore :(

    i had this problem on 42lg5010 for about 2 years. the left side of the picture was scrambled. started after about a year but i ignored it as it seemed to rectify itself after 45 mins of being powered on (heating up) or i would give it a nudge on the left side of the screen & it was fine. now a new issue has arisen the colours seem to be inverted on the whole screen & after about 10 mins a white misty border appears & any static image burns in really quickly. any ideas what might be causing this?

    Hey Simon, this is a great video, I have a LG 47 Led tv and the left side is good and the right sida has all these soft lines but I still able to see whatever I'm watching anyways I found a video suggesting is the T- Con card or Board but I haven't bought it yet, you also mentioned it in here too but but the video I found didn't mention anything about left and right ribbon function coming out from the T- Con card, I learned this from you know and this small ribbons that you're touching could be hopefully my problem, I'm gonns open it soon and try what you just did and if it works im not gonna buy the T- Con card, anyway did you have any update about this video cuz you published it in 2012 by any chance? And thanks !

    Hi. Thanks for this video. I have a different TV but it was quite useful to understand how to identifty the source of the problem. The left side of my TV gets dark/red and I just found that playing (plug/unplug/press) with one of the 4 ribbon bands from the TCON to the panel it gets ok. However when I turn the TV off and then on again, it just gets bad again. Switching the position of the ribbon bands it happens exactly the same and with the same ribbon position which for means the problem is not with the ribbons. Do you think that the problem is the TCON? Thanks

    • @SimonPitt
      @SimonPitt  Před 6 lety

      Franclim Bento it could be the ribbon ports on the panel or TCON board if swapping the ribbons does not clear the issue. Not an easy (or cheap) one to investigate as you obviously can't replace the panel so you could try another TCON board but it'll cost and it may not fix the issue if it is the panel.
      Good luck and thanks for commenting.

  • @SimonPitt
    @SimonPitt  Před 11 lety

    It could be the inverter boards that power the backlights, however I find it strange that both would go at the same time.
    If you look at the power board do any of the capacitors look "bloated", "expanded" or "dome" shaped? If any of the capacitors look bloated then it could indicate they are no longer working and it could be these that are not powering the inverter boards. Also check the connections to the inverter boards. Be careful here as the power board and inverter boards are dangerous.

    Deixo a minha experiencia recente:
    Abrir a tv e por detraz, no topo do ecran esta uma placa que se chama T-COM. Tem um flat cable por debaixo e por de cima saem dois para o ecran; essa duas de cima troque a posição delas; depois e em segurança ligue a tv, se a imagem estiver com o defeito tambem trocado de lado então é um dos flat cable que esta danificado ! Senão podera ser da T-COM.

    Great work, My 42LG5010 is doing exactly the same - Left hand side only! So maybe it's a manufactuer defect (poor solder or poor quality ribbons perhaps).
    You've saved me a lot of time / money and effort, as was just about to purchase a 2nd user T-Con board. Do you think that blowing a heat gun (at a safe distance) over the ribbon connections would help?

    This can be easily repaired with blu-tack and a few cocktail sticks. A friend of mine lost half his picture on a 42LG3000. So I took it apart, put blu-tac under the ribbon cable on the far left with four cocktail sticks stuck in it. Hey presto, when I put the thing back together it works.

    to Martin Smith, you might have setted the brightness of your TV to its maximum that resulted to burns at topmost layer of your tv screen.

      I have something like this, but with a floral pattern one side. I cannot see why a jar or physical injury to the screen (if that happened) should produce a regular floral pattern. Unless liquid crystal naturally forms into floral patterns.
