  • Finally! After much struggle and trying to catch a sporadic-E on the VHF FM band, here it is!
In this day I was reading on the Internet about an FM pirate station in my city, so I pick up my Tecsun PL-310ET and tune in, if I can catch anything...
And then an radio station pop in, in Spanish.... but I listen carefully... This is NOT Spanish... it's ITALIAN! WOW Sporadic-E booming!
Then I run to my cellphone to capture this video, and then searched for more stations and also find Arabic speaking.
NOTE: Can anyone tell me what stations are? It's very difficult to know for me without RDS.
Note 2: Some parts of the video, the audio has been recorded externally
    Lessons I learn:
    - Yes, you CAN do Sporadic-E DX with only telescopic antenna
    - Do NOT rush scanning the band (you can't pay careful attention to weak stations)
    - The signal is very directional, especially with other local stations on the same frequencies
    Frequencies captured:
92.2 MHz - Italian (from Italy)
91.5 MHz - Italian (from Italy)
93.3 MHz - Italian (from Italy)
96.5 MHz - Arabic (Maybe from Algeria or Tunisia)
    Transmitter info (TX)
    Band: FM VHF
    Modulation: FM (Frequency Modulation)
    Receiver info (RX)
    Receiver : Tecsun PL-310ET
Antenna: built-in telescopic antenna (55 cm or 21.7 in)
    Local reception: Porto (Portugal)
Time reception: 2015-07-17 (friday) 16:30 UTC
Camera: OnePlus One in 4K UHD (Ultra High Definition)
    Recorder: Zoom H1 Handy Recorder

Many congrats on your first E skip catches with the Tecsun PL-310ET. The Arabic station on 96.5 sounds like Tunisia, RTT Radio Jeunes, in my opinion. They have a strong 80 kW transmitter. Algerian stations tend to have more compressed audio, this one sounds cleaner. 73s!

Many congrats on your first ever Sporadic-E catches! Nice catches with good signals! I fully understand your excitement although my first Es catches were back in 1987. Sporadic E is always an exciting event.
The language on 96.5 is Arabic indeed and I agree with mutezone that it's most likely Radio Jeunes from Tunisia. In Algeria, there is only Chaine 2 on 96.5 and they don't broadcast in Arabic.
Of course, a portable with a telescopic antenna is sufficient for Sporadic E (I used a simple boombox with analog dial 28 years ago when I had my first catches from Spain, by the way). The Tecsun PL-310 is quite good for that purpose as it is pretty sensitive despite its short whip antenna and quite selective thanks to DSP technology. I like using my PL-380 for Sporadic-E DXing although it is lacking RDS. 73!

The more difficult to catch, the more excitement, and also not knowing you can catch those unusual radio stations from FM band (I always thought that only can hear local stations from VHF FM band). The Tecsun PL-310ET is far more better on the FM band (especially selectivity) than Tecsun PL-680.

How do search FM broadcast stations? I find fmscan.org quite good website.

The PL-680 is based on conventional analog circuitry. It is equipped with a rather wide analog filter, hence its selectivity is not the best (the same applies for many other similar radios). The PL-310ET and its "brothers" are based on a DSP chip offering much better selectivity.
I'm also using fmscan.org for researching station information and distances. It's certainly one of the most useful sites for DXers. 73!

Very nice to hear that! Yes sporadic-E propagation can be very amazing, especially by only using simple receivers!

Do you know what those stations are? Please leave a comment. Thanks!
