  • Nigerian women are being lured to Europe with dubious promises of good jobs and a better life. But it's a very different reality when they arrive. The vast majority of Nigerian women arriving in Italy and other European countries are forced into prostitution to pay off the cost of their journey. DW's Christine Mhundwa speaks with former victims of sex trafficking.

DW Africa We need to Learn who we are and the power we possess, individually and as a people. Yes I believe Education is key but not the Europeans way of thinking. We need to create opportunities for our people. And teach our young women that they are valuable and powerful. We need to build up our people from this low state of thinking and living.

One thing that I find painful is the women who are forced to keep babies of rape, because without these kids it's harder to get a stay in Europe, not forgetting the child support money, but the emotional trauma is taken out on these babies.

African leaders have failed, Africans have failed. If she wants to blame European Union for legalising it, what about other countries in Asia and middle East that are against it, still we have Nigerians trafficked there.

@Tobby Isiba dude relax they were having a conversation about sex trafficking and there are multiple factors at play here. Just because you do something for a certain reason doesn't mean people won't exploit that. Prostitution being illegal in Arab countries definitely means the amount of women getting trafficked for sex is going to reduce drastically which is the point she was making. When there's little to no demand for a service, supply for that service will reduce which would lead to a reduction in the sexual trafficking of women to that country.

This moderator is too judgemental and bias to be a journalist. Why doesn't she let the survivors speak.
Invite less people if you do not have more time for such an important topic. And do not influence the content of information if it is just your perspektive.
They are trafficing victims not sexworkers. They do not have a profession they get raped.
If you do not believe or care for your sources do not platform them. Their faces are now branded with the title the moderator gave them.

I believe a successful way to do this is that every young woman that enters europe should be registered under a guardian with a verified address. And the agency comes to visit every two weeks for two months to make sure that the young woman isn't trafficked.

I don't think it can end, why? Because these girls are mostly encourage by their mothers. I once met one girl who said her mother was aware of what she want to go and do in Italy and also aware of the juju practice behind it.
Maybe if European countries law that allow sex work legal be revisit or withdraw totally, maybe it will stop.

True that we also need to get rid off this "aber Glaube", superstitions that people think witchcraft is real is equally as dangerous as religion!! It is also the work of enlightened Nigerians in the diaspora to start communities and NPO's to educate the girls and the mothers about these facts. People remember that no so long ago they were burning witches in Europe but people got educated we can do it too. We also need to be selfless as a people, I bet you if every single person in the diaspora made an effort to educate one child back home who is not blood family will help a lot. I know a lot of Africans who give lots of monies to churches and Pastors in Europe and America if you ask what are they doing to improve the country they will start complaining about the government.
