  • Many young Africans are hopeful of a bright future when they make the long journey across the Sahara Desert and Mediterranean Sea to Europe. But reality often hits hard as they face unemployment, poor living conditions and pressure from family back home. Join DW's Christine Mhundwa as she speaks with young migrants in Sicily to find out if their decision to leave their home countries was worth it.

DW Africa Yes it is true. They believe they will have a better life due to what they see in media. Of course if you live in the west you are aware most people do not live the lifestyles that is propagated in media. We need to stay in Africa and build. Many who leave and come back pretending they are doing well because they were too ashamed to tell the truth. Happy to see these brothers put out the truth.

African nations are so corrupt it is hard for even the best of the best to succeed. Believe I've done business in several countries and boy the bribes, kick backs, 'presents' to members of the local government just so they can sign a piece of paper! And, that's just at local level, the main government also wants their cut. I can understand why these people ant out of those hellholes. Unless you have extensively travelled the world and have done £multi-million deals you cannot understand what oppression and inequality this corruptions produces and how it grinds people down all the time.

They are economic refugees, Europe has no responsibility to them, they can send them home. These illegals go to Europe but refuse to change their culture which is at the heart of their problems. If you move house you have to throw out the rubbish, don't take all your behaviours with you. Most lack any real personal awareness of their bad behaviours or cultural beliefs. Even if they go back home, they will still need knowledge, skills and education to acquire a better life. Educate yourself and empower your children and build back better in your own country. Illegal emigration is not worth risking your life. Try put money aside to fly back home or if it is impossible to save up then go to the emigration offices to organize a flight back home.

The whole migration push on Europe is problematic. It starts off on the false presumptions that : 1. migrants can just move to Europe illegally and stay there; 2. That Europeans are responsible for illegal migrants; 3. That its ok to just run away from problems in one's own country and go suck on the welfare of people in another country. What about staying in one's own country, and taking it back from the corrupt, thieving, oppressive politicians, and working towards making it better? Chase out the economic imperialists and all the other exploiters who claim to be 'investors' who have taken over your countries. Kick them all out. Farm your own land, produce your own goods. Stop pursuing European ideals.
There are many poor young Europeans who don't have jobs or much hope for a prosperous future either. Migrants have no right to go there and take the few existing opportunities from them. The economies in Europe are bad, and the lockdowns from COVID made it worse. I'm not sure that these guys on this panel deserve the empathy they're trying to get here. They are criticizing the EU asylum system and claim that they were exploited by the labor system. But in their ingratitude they miss one important point: they should not be in Italy in the first place. The lawyer in this video is a propagandist. She is Italian, and she is saying things that she knows are not true. And saying that she feels guilty is evidence that she is a typical self-hating white liberal. The type who doesn't even think about helping her own Italian youth who can't find a job? There's no doubt in my mind that her investment in all this is connected to some type of intimate relationship that she's in with one of these migrants. The NGOs are full of white women like her who prey on young, black men.
There are some very wealthy people living in Italy but Italy is not a wealthy country. In fact, there are a whole lot of poor people living in Italy too. The Italian economy is in the toilet, and unemployment is sky high. Many young Italians have had to move to other countries to find jobs. "Living the dream"...what a joke! The overwhelming number of Europeans are people of average means and they are not 'living the dream' either. The dreams of these Africans are shattered only because they thought that they could just go to Europe illegally and get the fast and easy life. They think that this is what life in Europe is because of movies, tv shows, and fake people on social media. Here's a reality check: it is EXPENSIVE to live in Europe and most people there are not rich. There are many Africans who live happy and successful lives in Africa. I happen to know a few of them.

Being European doesn't make you rich (unfortunately) and I know people here (European and other) struggling to put food on the table. Struggling to not end up on the streets. Sure, we have healthcare and safety nets. But the system is so complicated that even natives often require help to get all the paperwork done to apply for them. And don't get me started on birth certificates and passports. Even locals can get in real trouble if their house burns down and the hospital/school didn't keep copies. Never mind arriving without them.
It is so sad to see the hopes and dreams of these people crushed. They really deserve to be welcomed and given a chance. And not to be used as underpaid black workers (note: there is no connotation to skin color intended here. Black/nera is meant as "under the cover of darkness", "hidden" and should be translated to "illicit work" instead, this is a translation error (false friend) and in no way racist. I am born in Europe in one of the poorer parts and I can tell you that there are people in my country and not only who are living in poverty and are struggling to make ends meet.
People from my country work in agriculture in countries like Spain and Italy, they go there legally with a contract and work very very hard, they make some money , pay their taxes and then take whatever money they have left and go back to their countries and look after their families. They are not always treated nice which is very wrong, but they work hard and they are appreciative of the jobs and the opportunity.
It is a false pretence believing that if you are illegal in Europe you will be given money and opportunities just because you come from a poor country. No place in the word does that, and it seems to me hypocrite that while everyone is complaining about Europe being so bad they still risk their lives and their children’s lives to come to Europe.
I’ve seen countless examples of immigrants coming to Europe legally working hard, paying their taxes and making a life for themselves, those people didn’t have a hand held out for a free life , they educated themselves and worked hard.

Just because they can handle it doesn't necessarily mean they like it. Millions have left the country for Oz, NZ, SA for the sun and there are heaps here. White Australians here don't really like the cold either they also moan here in the winter when it's not even that cold as they much prefer the heat. "First world" is such a white concept. If I/people thought white people were genuinely happier in these first world countries, maybe we'd/they'd buy into that model. I think that's the take-home message in this video. They suffered to get to Europe just to work shit jobs and do a lot of paperwork. Most people don't seem to understand how back-breaking and filled-with-drudgery it is to keep/make a developed country (I say that as I'm thinking about the many waterways built/fortified in Italy). Moving to a place is an investment in upholding/bettering that place and these people should have known that. Whatever, at the end of the day, all you all do is just get old and die, no matter where you come from or how "advanced" you are. Your enemies lured you to Europe, not sisters and brothers. If I come to any African country wirhout documents and local language, what career can I expect? And who’s fault it’ll be if I end begging bread in the street? Appreciate honesty of these migrants- better later than never.

I have nephews who were born in Africa but have lived in the USA for a while. So, they have a SENSE of what it takes to make it here. Having said that, they cannot CONVINCE their friends back home that the USA is NOT paved with gold!! I imagine lot of young people in Africa perceive Europe the same way. I suppose it's been the media that gave Africans and other peoples outside of the western world that impression. Admittedly the prospects for young people are often VASTLY different in western countries compared to non-western countries - at least at the moment. Did I NOT hear that that guy is a Ph.D candidate? He's VERY articulate and seemingly very knowledgeable about the situation for African migrants. I hope people heed what he's saying. Perhaps, he should do some journalism!!

If something sounds too good to be true, It's not true. Africa is such an amazing continent, her people should take their countries back once and for all, build their own future. And all of us Westerners should only be allowed there as paying tourists, honest traders or other kinds of customers to fuel the economy.

There is no problem leaving Africa for an overseas country in search for a better life. But you have to have a plan, a job, an education. Know and consider all the basics. Unemployment, racism, basic needs and living costs in general. Most Africans think everyone in these first world countries are balling. There are a lot of poor white people and if these people aren't getting handouts form their white government what makes you think you will. There are successful emigrants outside Africa but what they had that these guys don't, IS A FEASIBLE PLAN!

VINCENT MUCHIRI - Sorry, mass migration is not . . . NOT the answer to poverty in Africa, or anywhere else, as long as they "have a plan." The "go to" countries are, due to mass immigration, becoming the same over-crowded, resource depleted, socially, economically chaotic places these folks are trying to leave behind. Let us help our global neighbors create their own prosperity IN THEIR OWN HOMELANDS. Peace.
