If you are staying at some of the small ryokans around instead of the big hotels and the lady's who run them find out it's your honeymoon, they might do a little something for you. Way back when my husband and I went for our honeymoon and some did tea ceremony, mini photo album and a kimono patchwork small purse. They were the nicest ladies and love chatting. Some even told us of good places to visit and the times to do so.

Definitely going to save this video for future reference. As I said before in a previous video, I went to Japan in the beginning of August and was close by when summer vacations started. What a sweltering experience! I had to drink plenty of big water bottles from connivence stores.
Thankfully, it was an experience to never visit again during that time. I’m still aiming for the autumn season on November this year for a more pleasant weather experience!
Thanks for the advice again, Toshi! 👍🙇

A valuable set of tips. Well organized and with helpful tips if one's schedule makes it impossible to avoid busy or weather-unfriendly periods. For fans of Grand Sumo, it is noteworthy that the three Tokyo tournaments occur during auspicious times to visit Japan. While cold, January is one of the sunniest periods in Tokyo making the cold less chilling than in cloudy places (like my home town, Cleveland, OH).

I am Japanese. There are areas of Japan, especially in urban areas such as Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, that are adversely affected by excessive numbers of foreign tourists. However, there are many minor cities and regions that are rarely visited by foreign tourists. If possible, avoid Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto and visit regions such as Kyushu, Tohoku, and Shikoku.

Foreign tourists visit mainly Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hiroshima, which are called the Golden Route. The Japanese government is also considering measures to attract foreign tourists to rural areas as a countermeasure against over-tourism.

The hotels are usually cheaper in Golden Week in Tokyo business districts. Just avoid the week after Golden week as stated here as everyone comes back!!!

I visited Japan in mid-September last year and I still felt that it was too hot and humid for my Nordic body, so I don't even want to think how hot it is in August.
This year I will be visiting Japan unfortunately in the middle of Golden Week due to how it was possible to get vacation from work - however, on a positive side it will be a bit easier to meet some Japanese friends as they are also on holiday. I booked train tickets right away when they were possible 3 weeks ago. And of course my trip extends to after the Golden Week so I get that "better time to visit" also.

Been to Japan three times. First time was in the middle of December and I was staying in Osaka and Kyoto. Apart from Arashiyama and Gion, my whole trip was very incredibly pleasant. Second time was in late April and I was in Tokyo. The sakuras had just bloomed but there were many areas around the city like Kobikicho Square, Nakano, and Kyobashi that were hardly crowded. If you want to see the cherry blossoms, you sort of have to risk it. Your experience will really depend on the mindset you have when you arrive. For me, the worst time to go is definitely Golden Week. Golden Week is HORRIBLE. Just don't go. I wish I didn't go at that time but my friend who I had not seen for 10 years was only in Japan during Golden Week. I think all other times are fine really.

Honestly, I visited Japan last August and I do not regret it one bit. So much so that I am returning in August again this year. Summer is amazing in Japan; less tourists (relatively) and spending time in Hokkaido in the summer is breathtaking! For context, I have hyperhidrosis and sweat excessively when it is even 15 celsius outside. I used clinical grade anti-perspirant for my trip last summer and it worked miracles! The humidity will definitely get you though... But you do get used to it and I grew to enjoy the smell of that heavy air... Weird..
