What's YOUR art enemy?
Oil paints... I'm looking at you.
Kasey Golden honestly watercolour :/ I really suck at watercolour
same. I CANNOT USE OIL PAINTS
My art enemy...? Well, back in 1987, I had a tussle with Oil Pastels...we'll get em next time
Honestly, SAME 😣
Thinking about what to draw.
Hey Kasey! Please don't throw away the oil paintings, once you're done with oil paintings, you need to varnish them so they will not be that wet anymore! You can check out some tutorials about how to varnish oil paintings!!!
Like so Kasey can see!!!!!!!!!!
I did a quick search and read if you varnish WHILE WET it will keep it from drying any further. I will do more research! Haha.
Kasey Golden this is true, you can not use a hair dryer or heat gun either, oils take TIME to Dry!
Yeah honestly just leave it for a good while 😅 I had an exhibition as an exam and I was working on some things up until the very last moment so I literally exhibited wet oil paintings 😅 but yeah... You can even hang it while still having wet spots as long at it's not a place where you'll bump into it
@@KaseyTheGolden Why let you're enemy scare you away if you can concur it? Try Gamblin solvent free gel. Non- toxic speeds drying time and levels brush strokes.
i mean, you have to wait to varnish until they're ACTUALLY dry. there are right mediums to speed the drying process
Oh no! you are missing a panel. I got three in my box. XP
btw, I think the birds at the end look like bats. fits the theme! 💜
FYI: Some of van Gough's oil paintings took 2 years to dry, because he made so many thick layers. 😳
So one of his paintings would be done by now?
I’m funny.
Right?
😨
Poor guy :'( i hate it when i have to wait for my art to dry :(
*Most people's biggest enemy:* Their boss.
*Kasey's enemies:* Colored pencils and oil paints.
I love her lmao xD
Don't forget watercolor pencils
@Lovely U have a nice point
My greatest enemy is my bed sheets lol I can never get them on my bed!! It drives me nuts and also pastels THEY DRIVE ME CRAZY AND THE ARE SO MESSY!!!
I still actually dont understand why Kasey doesnt like Watercolor pencils....
Watercolor pencils are basiclly my favorite art medium since theyre very easy to use...
next time u do oil paints try following a bob ross tutorial! he's rly good at explaining how the medium works (but don't follow his example of beating the devil out of ur brush, you don't want to inhale solvents. that's bad for u)
Oh my god, is that why he got cancer??
oftenretold Did bob ross use acrylic 🤔
I’m sorry I’m very slow so I really don’t know
@@izzyaddicted965 im not sure if he ever used acrylic in his career, but the wet-on-wet painting techniques he taught in The Joy of Painting only work with slow drying mediums like oil paint.
oftenretold he made like 3 paintings for each episode, I think 2 were and the final on tv was oil
Nah, Bob Ross used acrylic
The next time you play with oils, remember thick over thin (you can lay thicker paint over thinner paint)! Start your first layers with thin washes of paint and build up, it'll help make the experience more pleasant, oils can be daunting.
The actual most toxic paint ever was made from rat poison. Also my art enemy is myself.
I thought it was lead?
@@julien4305 Lead takes a while to kill you. Arsenic based paints... well arsenic can kill much quicker than lead. Though also in low doses can take a while and just make you really sick. Its kinda funny in a not funny way that the Victorians were happy to use arsenic to kill rats, but then didn't comprehend at first that maybe it might be a bad idea to use it to make dyes and paints and have their rooms wallpapered with it and their dresses made out of fabric dyed with it. Honestly I'd have probably died from it too if I'd been alive back then because arsenic green is the best green ever. The second best green would be the glass they used to make with uranium - it fluoresces under UV light. Why do pretty things have to be so deadly?
@@AlexaFaie oh wait isnt Arsenic used for paris green back then i think??
@@julien4305 Paris Green is one of them, it was a bluer green to emerald depending on how it was ground up. And another arsenic based green was Scheele's Green which was more of a yellow-green. So pretty both of them. And so deadly!
@@AlexaFaie Im googling these colors...
They really need to include a fast-drying agent in these boxes. It is such a game changer for people new to oils.
Totally agree. You don’t need a slow drying medium for oils. At least not at first. Liquin would’ve been great.
@@LysanDharker Liquin really is fantastic. I could always make do with oils before, but the ability to do underpaintings and glazing and work in layers with oils is just too good to work without it.
I don't know they didn't add the M. Graham Walnut Alkyd Medium instead.
But the slow drying time is the whole point of oil paint, if you use a fast drying medium you might aswell just use acrylic. You need to use the drying time to your advantage, not fight against it
@@pianomanwithapianoplan504 to how some people work, sure. Even with the fast drying agent, it behaves NOTHING like acrylic. We're talking speeding up the drying process from multiple days to ten minutes or a little less. This still allows for the beautiful blending oils achieve without having to wait days or weeks to not mess up a section you want to leave alone.
Oil paint: takes literally ages to dry
Instructions: Use Walnut oil to slow down the drying process.
*insert villager's sound*
P.s. The piece looked amazing Kasey 😍 the kind of streakiness on the ghost whales added some spooky factor! 😤
It really doesn’t if you dont lather it on. Mine take aprox. 3 days🤷🏻♀️
whatever. My winsor and newton oils literally dry in a day on canvas and I don’t understand why. 😐
if you use a better medium they dry faster. i use liquin and mine are dry to the touch overnight. (still not technically dried, but to the point where you can’t tell)
acidthoughts I use Winsor and newton oils as well. Do you want them to dry slower? If so just use walnut, linseed or any slow drying medium! If you want it to dry faster use Liquin or any other fast drying medium!
What are you guys talking about, my oil paintings take about 1-2 WEEKS to completely dry 😂
I usually apply the first few layers of oils by thinning it with solvents like turpentine. This method helps dry the layers relatively quickly. The upper layers should be thinned with oils so they dry slower so you get smoother blending and the painting doesn't eventually crack. The rule of oil painting is "fat over lean" for this reason.
Kasey: "I wish the white was dry so I could paint over it for the shine in the water"
Me, an oil painter: omg no tho, it's so much easier to do while it's wet, that's the *whole point*
fwiw, maybe go watch a bob ross video or two? it makes a huge difference
YESSS! That #magicwhite moment ♡
Right?! I was like no that's perfect. And then she was laying it on rly thin when it would've been better thicker than thick when it would've been good thinner, and wet paint isn't always your biggest enemy. ^^;
I just wish I could help her through the screen :(( I understand that oil struggle
I feel your pain, Kasey!! I'm no lover of oil paints either... Messy, smelly, need of carcinogens to clean up with, dry time... Ugh... Now the water soluble oils are awesome!! 💖
Love how the moon came out! 💖
Thanks! I think the sky is my favorite part!
I also kinda hate them! I feel every con what you mentioned (not a smell tho i've got anosmia haha) - those are sooo messy
I actually enjoy them. I like to do realistic portraits and want to enhance my abilities.( As a 13 year old)
I use the medium Galkyd for my paintings can dry overnight.
I’m thinking of trying them out but, I can tell I’ll suffer.
Adding solvents will bring out the nuance of color in the paint. That's why the Payne's Gray looks so dark. Thinning it out will help with that.
I recommend Gamsol as a clean up and a thinner. It's not the toxic, smelly terpintine that people associate with oil paints. (The oil paint isn't toxic to the skin, just don't eat them lol but the turpentine *is* very toxic, so use mineral spirits).
This is coming from someone who oil paints and has taken a few oil painting classes.
*does anyone else want Kasey to do a monochromatic Bob Ross painting with the oil paints....*
or is that just me?
As someone who loves oil painting I recommend getting liquin light gel if you want your painting to dry faster. The thing about mediums is a little goes a long long way. Temperature and air flow can both affect how your paint dries, if its really cold it aint drying and it needs air to dry because oils harden through oxidizing. Oils usually arnt the go to for any Illustrator because its not very time effective when you need to get illustrations done quick.
" Oil is like the sand of art supplies "
Are you Anakin ?
Yay another paletteful review. I love these. I look forward to these reviews so much!
Yay! Hope you enjoy it!
I can’t stand pastels.there messy.i have tried using them in art class but I vnst
Aniyah Martin samme. They are the Satan of art supplies
I haven't given them a proper try, but I can't imagine liking them, hahaha.
Dude the texture is so bad too, it hurts
I used to feel the same but eventually I grew to love them!
Yeah there messy and I guess there more abstract but I kinda got used to them after a while
My art enemy?
I dont have an enemy.....
*looks over a oil pastels*
Ummm
Funny, i loove oil pastels!
I love oil pastels too.
Oh no. Please no. Why.
When I was a kid we had several oil painting around my house, and I remember them being there ever since I was born! Sometimes, I would get bored and pick at the little tips in the paintings AND THEY WOULD STILL BE WET UNDERNEATH!! It puzzled me so much! How could they still be wet after all those years!? Anyway, reading the comments here... I get it now...
I used to be terrified of oils until I started using them at school. They are now my preferred medium! I feel like I've been missing out on this huge area of art simply due to my fear. They are super forgiving and there are much less limitations. Somehow I love art even more than I did before! Everyone finds a different path of fulfillment in art, I'm sad oils are not working for you.
The fact that you aren’t using a bigger brush is killing me 😭
Kasey why didn't you use the pallet knife when you were swatching

Love the new vid! You continue to inspire me with every post ❤️
Have a good day
Hey Kasey, I’m so proud of you for hitting 1M!! I have been here for a long time and to see you hit 1M makes me so happy. You deserve it so much! You always work so hard to keep up with everything and you always keep content going. Seeing all your hard work pay off is amazing. You have came so far. Love you Kasey :) 💕

I hAtE oils too, I like my layers, and hate waiting
Try gamsol! It’s amazing. Thins out the paint and helps clean brushes. Try a spiral brush cleaner too I love mine! Liquin really helps speed up drying too!
Omg I love the way this painting turned out!🤩🤩🤩
I love the gray sky on your painting I think u nailed it ❤️
cool! The moon drawing is super pretty, I like oil paint well watching it lol.
I love how this came out! I feel like having the white blending with the background water makes the ghost fish look transparent and really gives the ghostly vibe you were looking for
My art enemy is markers! They're expensive and hard to use.
I am also a jerk because i use acrylic and gouache as watercolor 😔 I just can't help it
I do that to acrylics too.
@@menap1337 Yaay! I'm not alone
I always dillute my acrylics with water! I don't necessarily use them as watercolors but water is a big part in my mixing process.
Love this channel! Your art is really good, keep doing what ur doing!
Aw, thank you! I'll keep at it!
I love This! It looks so cool in my opinion! I love the water in it so much!
I love the atmosphere of your painting
I'm glad you didn't let the walnut oil scare you off - you definitely needed it with this brand of oils to get a workable consistency for smooth work. Hopefully the painting should be ok after 4 or so days in most areas as you painted so thin (its only really the thick impasto areas that could take longer) I wish they included an alkyd medium instead of walnut though - It SPEEDS UP the drying time to mostly overnight which is great! HMU if you have oils questions anytime
Came back from school and checked if u uploaded and you did!🥳🤗
Looks beautiful thank you so much
I love watching your videos as I work on commissions. Idk what it is but your videos give me creativity 💕
I understand you So so much , I am an extremely inpatient artist because I nearly only use copics,
Paint for me *is death*
But I love how you made the sky ! It’s so beautiful 😍
I really love your final painting here! It's beautifully eery with the starless full moon sky and the still sea with ghost fish peeking out of the water everywhere creepily.

Kasey: I DONT REALLY WORK WITH OILS
Kasey: I don't have patience
Also Kasey: draws thousands of ants
I'm proud of you for using supplies you don't like. Thanks for making this video so we can all relate to being intimidated by supplies!
To fill the "holes" of the canvas, you need to criss cross. Like make tiny crosses everywhere, it's also easier on the brushes. I really enjoyed watching this and I hope you don't give up on oils yet😊❤
Oil painting disaster? Sorry, Kasey, you're wrong. It's awesome! Love the scales on the ghost fish and the use of the pallete knife. Always love your videos.
I was literally just thinking about you trying oil paint while watching your acrylic painting video this morning!!! Im so excited to watch this 😄🥳
That’s amazing !
Liquin is your frieeeeeend!!!! It makes the oil layers dry overnight so you can work on it more the next day! It's honestly the only reason I attempt any kind of oil painting :P
It's not a disaster! I think it's really cute!!! You did much better with the oils than I could probably do!
This is super cool you are my favorite art youtuber go on 😀
Oils are my favorite medium 😍🤤 Thats part of why I love watching you! Oils give me the time to fix all my anxiety/art fear mistakes haha but you’re so confident with watercolors! I love watching your technique, it inspired me to try making watercolor Christmas cards for my secret Santa events this year💞
YESSS KASEY UPLOAD
I love the little ghost fish, I'm glad you ran with that thumbnail idea!
That looks beautiful
Hey Kasey! I JUST got a notification that you posted and had to come as soon as possible XD
Love your vids, I watercolored while watching your videos today. You rock! >v
I bought one of the dennis plushies! Can't wait for it to arrive!
I Love this painting the birds look like bats that's so cool🤩❤😍
i love the look of it
I like the black and white look!
Ok so as an oil painting student I will say adding that much oil to your piece makes it not archival and through out time it will begin heavily yellowing. Oil paints are great Im glad to see you trying more!!
Wow, that is a painting to be proud of, I would be very happy to be able to create such a good painting. You did good Kasey!
That looked great
I quite like the way this turned out!
You can mix oil paints with turpentine to make it thinner instead of oil, it doesn't add sheen but it does dry a lot quicker (you can bring back sheen with a shiny varnish though). Oils dry because they form bonds with oxygen, not because the oil evaporates, like alcohol or water based art supplies do, so if you mix it with a solvent that does evaporate it will dry more quickly :)
If building layers you should put more fatty layers over the thin layers that are mixed with turpentine, otherwise the difference in drying time will cause top layers to crack. You can also use acrylics as a base colour and do the oils on top when they are dry.
Another tip: oils aren't entirely opaque, so adding white on top will work as a highlight, not as a pure white. Oils are great for painting transluscent and shiny things because of this (and because of the drying time, you have plenty of time to blend haha) :)
Hope that might help someone! :)
Great job! I love it. You are so brave. :)
I love the eye omg
Hey Kasey! Just a tip! If you use the oil included in the box(just a tiny bit will do) it will help the paint thin out and flow better onto the canvas. It makes a tremendous difference in the overall look of the painting and make the paint application a LOT easier. I used to be afraid of oil paint too, but once you figure out how the medium works it’s not half bad. Also, the more u thin the paint out with either mineral spirits or linseed oil, the “quicker” it will dry. ❤️ Hope this helps!
I love these episodes!
loved this. this box is also my first time working with oils and im actually enjoying the process. ive found that if you do a layer then wait about a week then its pretty much dried and you can do the next layer. im trying to do a portrait for my nan for christmas.
They gave such a tiny brush to work with as the only brush!! Also I know they didn't include anything for it here but priming the canvas with a neutral basecoat really helps with the texture issue
I'm scared, I'm excited, but I'm also early ;D
(love u Kasey ❤️)
i really love how the ghost fish came out!!!
Oil paints:
Kasey: were in the endgame now
Lol I love your editing 😂
Kasey, you did amazingly. It is such a difficult medium to use, but you really embraced it. You’re used to seeing your art a certain way, but this screams of a Kasey art piece. The discomfort is simply from adapting to a new medium.
*Have a Great Day Beautiful Souls, Artist here* 😭♥️
Omgggg u r perfect!!!
I think the background turned out pretty good!
lmao watercolors are the absolute BANE OF MY EXISTENCE. oils are my love❤️
You're GOOD at oils
I cant wait for you to do a review of YOUR scrawled box I’m so proud of u I feel like a mom🤪
I love your vids :3
You can use linseed oil to thin out the pigment so you could spread it out better and also wash your brush out in paint thinner but don't leave it in for too long because the plastic may dissolve
I showed my mum your previous oil painting video and she wanted to give it a go herself, so I bought her the Scrawlr Box box from that vid and she's enjoying it. Her jaw dropped when I told her it could take up to 6 months for it to dry though. She's keeping them above the door frame so our cats can't get to them xD
Oh my gosh Kasey, this is literally so beautiful
I love the moon reflections on the water. I think you nailed it!
(Sorry if my English is bad, it’s my second language)
Well thank you!
You did great on your English! Better than most people who English is their first language! :D
@@KaseyTheGolden Aaaaahh you replied!! No problem 💞 I love your art so much
@@xxthat_weird_enbyxx2438 Thanks!
Recently, I’ve used oil paint for the first time too, and I think it’s quite fun! Most people use liquin to smooth out their paints, it’s soooo satisfying! Turpentine is for cleaning, and you normally don’t use straight oil paint because it has the consistency of peanut butter (unless dry brushing. Oil paint is actually just oil and pigment! It’s non-toxic, unless you somehow manage to breath in pigment particles. Just wash your hands, and you’ll be set!
Painting looks really good :) 🐟🌕
I once used acrylic paint 🎨 first then used oil 🖌 and the end result wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be
Def acrylic for me oddly (?) I took a paint class and we did mainly oils so I guess that's why I prefer it over acrylic (but def not watercolor or gouache)💖💗
Tip: if able too always store oil paintings in the coldest room you have, it 'dries' faster that way then your able to layer and be done with it as a whole after words~
I bought one of your Dennis plushies!!
I really like the answes from the box
I don't know if anyone else mentioned it or not, but oil paints aren't toxic in and of themselves. It depends entirely on the pigment (which are used in other mediums as well). You should use the walnut oil to "clean" your brushes and then use dawn dish soap to get the oil out after you're done. No solvents necessary. Also, if you want to make your life easier, look into quick drying mediums for oils, they make the paint dry to the touch over night and make the paint flow better while painting. Gamblin even makes some solvent free versions to make it so much safer.
If anyone is interested to know: there is such thing called 'retouching varnish' - you can varnish the oil painting when it's only touch-dry instead of having to wait months for it to completely cure. It still allows the oil paint to oxidise beneath it, and when it has completely cured, you can just varnish it normally again :)
Hey Kasey, you should try following a Bob Ross tutorial!
That looks fantastic. 😉 You should do more oils
Reminds me of the album “o my ♥️” from Mother mother. Love your vids!
Kasey, get two metal cups, fill one about a quarter of the way with solvent (gamsol is good), the other the same amount with the oil, and then when you want to change the consistency of what's on your brush, give it a quick dip in one of those two. That might help if there's a next time? Also get a glass palette for this--if you have like, a picture frame you don't need, the glass in that will work! Easier to clean, and doesn't waste watercolor paper lol
