- This is a detailed video on how to clean EGR Passages and throttle body in V6 3.0 engine. The car is 2001 v6 3.0 accord coupe. This is J series V6 that was also used on Acuras (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002).
P0401 could mean one of the following:
1) Differential Pressure Feedback EGR sensor is faulty
2) There is a blockage in the EGR passage, most likely carbon buildup
3) The EGR valve is faulty
4) The EGR valve may not be opening due to a lack of vaccuum
Recommended tools:
1. Screw driver set: amzn.to/2XAk3sH
2. Sockets and wrenches set: amzn.to/36xLnMn
3. Pliers: amzn.to/2U4rY0q
4. Carb cleaner: amzn.to/2XUfmtY

Thanks for a great video. I have a 2001 Honda Accord V6, when I removed the intake manifold the ports were solid shut with crud in the intake and the engine port was 80% clogged. Cleaned the ports and the throttle body, put everything back together and no more P0401 code. I'm at 600 miles plus now and no issues so far.
Igor's how to tutorial was so helpful to me. My background/experience with working on cars is very limited. I always been afraid of fixtures, because I didn't know what I was doing and feared making things worse. Igor really breaks things down, and proceeds at a pace that even I am able to keep up with and not get lost. I was able to take care of the problem code P0401 (insufficient EGR flow) and get my car inspected. I am grateful for Igor taking the time to make this video. It was certainly a blessing to me, and I would highly recommend his teaching skills to anyone experiencing problems with their vehicle. Thank you Igor!
Thank you! I am glad you liked it :)
Igor, thank you for posting a great video! For me the hardest part was getting to the bottom throttle body bolt on the firewall side. You can't see the bolt head so you end of feeling around for it under the throttle cables. I also removed the EGR valve. That allows you to clean up all the carb cleaner that is sprayed in from the top side. I used carb cleaner, an old bike brake line as a snake and compressed air to clean the passage from both ends.
Oh...one other thing:...your camera work was superior!
Thanks, I do some photography and video work, so my equipment comes in handy for this
@@IgorKadulenkov👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
This was one of the most helpful videos I have seen. You couldn't have walked me through this any better than if you were standing right next me. You saved me from a huge mechanics bill and kept me from replacing an EGR valve that wouldn't have solved the problem anyway. Thank you very much!!!
+Ken Drake hi Ken, thanks for your comment. I am glad I was able to help you to save some money! :)
@@IgorKadulenkovwhat issues did you experience before cleaning? My car radomly starts surging when on the highway. I give it gas and it dies. Then suddenly it gets power again. It acts like a bucking bronco. One min it only goes 30 mph the next it races really face then it loses power again. This happened about once ever 5 months for about 30 mins of drive time. Is this erg port related?
Bud. Can't thank u enough. I had the same code and it took me 20 mins to get it FIXXED The mechanic wanted to charge me 300 to fix the problem !!!!!! 👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋
+oreohope1 haha, I am happy I was able to help and you saved some $$ :))
Igor Kadulenkov your the man bro !!!! Very nice video man thank you
That was fast. It took me almost 3 hours to get it fixed. The Check Engine light gone instantly. Lol
Igor, your video is great w hat exact tools are you using I'm having a terrible time getting the manifold bolts off
@@pengfeili1988 hey thats all that matters
Wowsers, I agree with all the other commenters: Clear explanations & excellent camera work = Fantastic video! Many thanks for your great work : )
Best video for the fix. Just fixed my Acura CL with some minor changes.
Thanks for making these videos. I just got done fixing my EGR following your video. Saved me $700. Thanks man.
Damm its alot of cashed saved
Took around 5 hours but it was worth it!, thanks for the precise instructions! No more codes!
this is a great video, the 3.0 on the Honda and acura motors are known for their carbon buildup. instructions were spot on, easy to follow. my check engine light is gone, and all it cost me was 45 minutes of my time, and a 3 dollar can of carb cleaner
What kind of problems were you having before you cleaned ?
I just finished a few minutes ago. Took about 1 hour to do. It feels awesome to have accomplished this. Thanx a million brother !!!

March 2022 I was extremely hesitant to try and do this myself. The mechanics around here charge 140 and hour and said just in labor it would be 3 hours plus a new EGR valve so I decided to try. My experience is oil change and an alternator so next to none. This video leaves nothing to guess about everything is included. The author needs a Venmo bc I feel like I owe him a 50 dollar bill for saving me so much money. It did take me 5 hours but that included trips to the parts store for torque wrench rental. Thank you a million times over!
This video was extremely helpful to me as I needed to replace the EGR port, but also realized after watching that it would be a good idea to clean out everything first. Thank you so much, you saved me a lot of money and your video was thorough and explained everything perfectly!
Thank you! Glad my video helped you!
I recently got a 98 accord ex v6 and I had 6 codes on the scanner all related to this, so I followed your instructions and bam no more check engine light and it runs like a dream, thank you so so so much
Thank you Igor! Your video is very easy to follow. I did my EGR passage cleaning and EGR valve replacement with ease after I watched your video!
+J Ang thanks! I am glad my video helped you.
Great video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks so much for this very helpful video! I was able to remove the build up in the EGR passage and my check engine light went off! It was my first time doing this kind of work on my car and your instruction allowed me to save lots of money and have the satisfaction of learning more about my car, too!
So happy for you I did the same thing to my 98 Honda V6 first time I ever done it, they were clogged up running very good now!
Hey Igor, thank you so much for this video. Very detailed. I don't have much experience working on cars but I'm sure that I will do a good job with this guide.
+Carlos thanks! Glad my video helped!
Thank you for this video! I have a 99 Accord EX V6 and as many others have said, the ports were totally blocked off and clogged through from one end to the other with carbon build up. I cleaned the ports as you did and put it all back together and wow, not only is the gas pedal responsive from the very top, but my acceleration greatly improved, the car runs and idles smoother, and the exhaust used to reak but now almost no smell at all. Thank you!
Thank you for the video, my 2001, Honda accord 188,000 miles check engine lights are off, and I have more power, running like a champ
Great video. I would not have even considered trying this before, but watching you and following the instructions, I feel confident I can do this. Thanks, Igor!
I have a 2001 Honda Accord F23A4 engine 4-cylinder, but this video is still excellent to watch! Very detailed and important information is mentioned or cautioned! THANK YOU!
Igor! Love you, man! Thank you. I had you on my laptop in the garage and your video walked me through fixing my super clogged EGR on my 1999 Honda 6cyl Accord. It was like you were there with me. So easy. I watched two other videos TRYING to explain this procedure, but my guardian angel brought me to yours. Great Video. Your step-by-step was perfect for this rank amateur. I hope you do more for other repairs. Thanks again!
Jack Burnham that's right
Thank you Jack, so glad my video helped you! :)
@@IgorKadulenkov Time you got paid Igor right🤔
Great video, clear concise and easy to follow. The channel from the throttle body to the EGR valve of my Accord was clogged solid, it took a hard push of a screw driver to clear it. So far so good. Cheers
This is the clearest instructional video i have ever come across! Many thanks Igor, i couldn't have done it without ya. I had a lot of fun and you saved me a bunch of money - thanks again!
Very thorough with details and instruction. Plus, camera work and illustration detail save me a lot of time and money.
Actually saved my life man most helpful maintenance video ive ever watched
I changed out the EGR valve but my check engine light came back on. after getting a $350 quote to clean out the EGR port I decided to take a stab at it myself. i dont do much auto work and it took about 1.5 hours using this video as a reference. car fired up first shot and check engine light is off. Thanks a lot!!!
Hi Hyuma, thanks for feedback! Glad you saved some money. It's insane how much mechanics charge for a simple job.
@@IgorKadulenkov uhh yeah especially if you need to pay the rent
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Cleaned passages. Cleared code. So far so good. Easy job. Took one hour(I'm kinda slow!)
Changing my valve cover and tune seals I came across this video. Having to take my air manifold off to get to the seals I wouldn't have known to clean the EGR passages like that so thank you!
Had a p0401 code on my 98 v6 honda accord and followed this video step by step and no more check engine light, thank you!
For how long did your check engine light stay off once you cleaned your EGR valve and its ports? I spent so much at the honda dealership repair center getting so much work done, took my car to Auto Zone for the free check engine light diagnostic and it came up with the P0401 code as well.
Before I cleaned it I just tried to reset the CEL and it came on after ~30mi or so. Afterwards I did this cleaning I had the battery disconnected so the CEL was turned off but I did the cleaning and the CEL hasnt come back on yet and thats after ~200 mi or so. I also took a look at the EGR valve also (2 bolts and a sensor takes this off) and it looked almost brand new, but I still cleaned that anyways just to be sure. Ill let you know if CEL p0401 comes back on but I dont think it will unless it gets clogged again. It seemed like in my case it was just the entrances of the ports that were clogged and not all the way through. Good luck!
rons2021 That sounds about right. Thanks for the luck. I will definitely get someone to o what you did. It can't hurt to clean it like you did.
What were the Symptoms with your car? Was it not Accelerating correctly?
@ron
Fantastic video! Much appreciate the detailed steps, torquing sequence and torque values of the intake manifold bolts. I will be using this video as a reference when I perform the same procedure on my 1999 Honda Accord V6.
This is absolutely fantastic work. Thank you sir.
Thank you so much Igor you saved my car, my CEL was flashing but I followed the video exactly and my car is back to normal
matter of fact approach, great pictures, thank you and you have my subscription!!
Excellent video, thinking about trying this myself this weekend! This video has given me a lot of confidence, doesn't look too difficult to do.
Really good video compared to others. Good job man!
Worked like a charm! Thank you
Right on Brother
1998-2001 Honda J Series engine was such a beauty
i did the very same procedure on my car. cleaned the egr. drove a bit the lite came one. went and bought and an egr. drove 200 miles no prob. on way home the lite came on. then i pulled the trigger and took off the intake plenum and cleaned it like that in the video. the engine felt good and free. drove 20 miles and the lite still came on. i am not even bother trying any more. the video was a great help.
i disconnect the battery and held the 2 battery leads together for 30sec and the check engine lite went out. it hasnt come on back yet.
Which code are you getting? Could be some other reason.

@@fyahwerks Frankenstein would love that
Egr clogged fill with Oil, at first I thought some kind of oil hose connection but aft watching ur video I goona clean it top to bottom 👍👍👍
Good teacher. I learn something, thanks for sharing this video
Now I know how to fix the check engine light issue on my 2001 Accord V6( w/310,000 miles). I'll be able to get it to pass emissions again this year, so my son can continue driving it to work. Instead of him worrying about how to come up with a whole bunch of money, buying another vehicle to replace it with.
Very thorough and easy to understand. Thank you for taking the time and effort to make such a great video!
Thanks David, hope he could enjoy driving it as long as he wants to. Good luck!
@@IgorKadulenkov thanks Igor!
Thanks for the awesome video. Got me through all the steps without any problems.
Well igor I did it too. Problem fixed. The moment I started the car the cod disappeared, didn't had to reset it. Thanks a lot you are the best.
Thanks! Glad it worked for you!
for those that dont realise this on like my 99 model 3.0 the pcv hose is in a different spot and its much safer to actually just pull the pcv itself out and leave hose connected.. if u try to pull this hose off after 150k miles more then likely u will be buying another... just sayin. very helpful video though. seems to have worked for me so far as well and i can see it was done on my vehicle by previous owner a year ago at a shop for $100.. took me 15-20 mins and a $8 can of cleaner
Your videos are great. I had error code P1491 and so I tried replacing the EGR valve with one I was able to snag for ~$50.00 on Amazon. After clearing the code and driving another 50 or so miles it turned back on, but this time gave me P0401 - EGR "A" Insufficient Flow. I'll give this a shot!
+Omid Feghahati thanks and good luck !
Thanks you... I've been looking everywhere on how to open this one. And I finally did. Except the tubing to the air filter is so old, it crack to pieces when I pulled it off. EGR problem fixed but gotta buy that huge tube now
Excellent video on this repair. Great tip on using the magnet to hold the nuts in place while being removed. That will save a lot of time looking for fallen nuts. Such a simple idea that I have never seen before.
I think I saw it in some video about 10 years ago and have been using it ever since. Magnet is the most important tool, when working with a car.
Excellent video. Well done with good instruction. Thank you very much , as i have a 2000 Accord V6 with same issue.
Thank you so much! This saved me a ton of money. Thank you thank you!
This was very helpful but my intake manifold wouldn't come off until I completely separated the right side inlet. I think because of a couple bolts that were studs with nuts on both sides sticking up. Still a very good video. I found my passage was clean but I still took it apart to make sure after seeing other Accords plugged. Nice to see a video like this where you can see what's going on without someone talking 90 mph and missing video pieces. Very helpful. Thank you.
Thanks for this video. I performed the work and I was able to keep the check engine light off.
Thanks Igor for the great "how to video"!! mine was so clogged I could even the red extension tube on the car cleaner can in the port hole it was so clogged! after soaking, poking, and air hose got both upper and lower ports free again! new egr, plugs cap and rotor and wires, oil change and front O2 sensor too! put her all back together cleared the codes then went to crank her up and nothing......... had wires wrong on cap!? but she purrs now and it us to bogg out on freeway. so thanks again sir for your video with it and $250 in parts and 3hrs i got it done! your a badass! keep making great videos!
+Eric T awesome! Thanks for your review. I am glad my video helped! It's not a very hard job, but mechanics would rip you off for sure

Thank u so much made the job so easy , my car so much more power. Thank u
I want to thank you for sharing your skills with the public I learned how to do this through this video
I am a rookie average mechanic but even I can say with certainty that motor sounded like shit run over twice .sounded like it need it oil .my Honda runs smooth this motor was running either dry or rough .
Bought a 01 accord v6 and I was having this issue for the longest. I cleaned it 6 times and that didn’t fix. Then I realized the EGR wasn’t the OEM one... bought one from the junk and BOOM! Fixed
Awesome
Thanks bro, Sweet Camera Work too! hope this cars still holding up!
Thank you for helping me through this. Great video too
Your awesome. Saved me a bunch of money. Easy fix too. thanks
Thank you very much! My ports were completely clogged!
Thanks for the post i got to do the same thing to my Honda prelude.
Thanks! I had already bought a new EGR valve but that wouldn't have fixed it. The EGR port was completely blocked. I replaced the valve since I had it and it was tore down this far.
Thanks for the video.
My homda has this code on definitely gonna do this myself instead of spending 300 bucks.
Really thanks alot for this video.God bless brother
Great video. Thanks. 👏👏👏👏👏
Great video! Spasibo!
Yes this will solve your problem 100% if you have this code. Do it yourself. Hardest part is torque wrenching the bolts to 16 ft/lb. First time I broke my plenum bolts and had to visit Honda's Carland to buy a new set. Charged me about 14$ but it was worth it to have my emissions passed. DIY
Wowwww!!! THANKS A LOT!!!!!! You save me from some mechanicganters!!! They told me a lot of crazy things about that!!! YEAHHH.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🥇
Thank you so much for the video
Thanks for making this video. Although I must say I'm less than thrilled that I've got to pull my intake off to do this. I went into it thinking I simply needed to remove the valve itself and clean it. Oh well. I guess that'd be too easy huh?
Great video!
Thank you sir excellent video
I see you using the stick magnet and I see a man who is tired of retrieving fallen nuts and bolts. I have a Jeep wrangler with TWO 15mm sockets way down in a frame rail...
lmao
Thank you so much for your nice details video

To do this job could you list the tools needed. I'm a newbie. Thanks in advanced.
Shout out to you for the paper trick!!!!
I have to the same issue with same code. I performed this and code remains? New egr installed maybe clean the passageway before the egr valve itself exhaust side ? Any thoughts?
Hey Igor... Thanks for the video. Can you provide a list of tools and cleaner I'll need to accomplish this? Thank you.
That motor is very clean!!!
That’s a lot of work man
It's not too bad at all actually.
Thanks for video
Great video and information, thank you. Are the torque lbs the same for a 2002 TL 3.2 Base? Your video is the best one I've found. Very professional! Thank you
2:56 what is that little hose to the left called and where does it connect to? Also what does it do? Pls help bc my car shuts off sometimes when it’s connect and when I take off the hose it turns on just fine
Nice job, thanks
Best video!!
could carbon build up lead to compression being sent to top of motor therefore sending oil to top of my motor. this motor to be exact, I replaced egr valve code went away, but i am having 3 cylinders misfire with oil being found when i pulled out the spark plugs if you have any idea why this is happening, would much appreciate the advice🙏🏻
Did you take the EGR valve off before you cleaned the port because i can't see the valve
thx for the video
WELL DONE! THANK YOU BRO!
I have 2000 v6 Honda Accord, had egr intake removed and cleaned week ago. The engine light came back on 2 days after cleaning. Car runs okay a little sluggish Today all the interior dash lights came on, what to do now.
after the intake manifold, that hole that was caked with carbon goes into the water passage on the driver's side. when I took mine apart that part was caked with carbon too, get new metal gaskets when you do and replace the giant o-rings on the giant water pipe from the passage to the engine
HOLA AMIGO ME GUSTARIA HACERTE UNA PREGUNTA TENGO UN HONDA V6 2002 Y CUANDO ANDO EN EL Y DESPUES NO PRENDE SI DA MARCHA Y LO DEJO UN RATO Y DESPUES PRENDE QUE PODRA SER OJLA ME PUEDAS AYUDAR
Do you have a video for valve adjustment on this engine?
Great video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Now this doesn’t LOOK difficult at all, but looks like it’ll take me a good 4-6 hrs to do 💯 gotta get a torque wrench 💪🏾 what size torque wrench should I purchase?
The EGR valve can be stripped for cleaning by undoing the 4 torx screws under the graphite/ fibre/metal gasket . You'll need a 7 mm spanner on the 4 nuts . The valve itself can be removed using the next larger size torx by holding the hex part of the solenoid through the apertures . Inside the EGR valve You will find a baffle that will stop the valve being cleaned properly by any other method . Using spray cleaners will not clean the back of the valve but may dislodge a lump of carbon that may wedge the valve open continuously causing hunting or loping at idle .
The inside of the valve body particularly the seat can be cleaned factory fresh and you could even lap the valve to seat using fine paste . Reassembly is reverse order . Use a new OE gasket or make some using heavy duty glass reinforced silicon baking /barbecue sheet , 3 layers will reduce heat transfer from the valve to the solenoid and signal ,supply components .The valve normally cokes itself shut as it opens like an ordinary poppet valve into the transfer port to the inlet manifold and spends much of its time closed or just slightly open and I have seen them with the valve totally coked over . Many of the V6 parts are no longer available in the UK but just about anything peculiar to this model , like the ICM for instance can be made from other common Honda parts .
