    We’ve had a lot of viewers asking about the Mini 2 issue where the batteries are not auto-discharging like they should when in the drone or in the charging hub. In this clip I explain why this may not be happening and show you a few things you can do to keep your batteries safe. Please let me know if you have any questions and thanks again for watching!

  • @davekidd7811
    @davekidd7811 Před 3 lety

    Great video so thank you for that. In my own test in the last few weeks as to how the Mini 2 batteries currently behave outside of the unit, it would appear that they go through two phases of auto discharge, first after 24 hours or so down from a full 100% to 96%, but instead of discharging further at around 5 days, it seems to take that bit longer and around day 6-7 is when the 2nd discharge phase begins which sees the charge drop eventually to 72% over a 24 hour, so the manual stating that by day 5 it should have dropped to low 70s is misleading. I did get notification of firmware updates for my batteries last week and then left them in the hub for 3 days but they stayed at 100% so it looks like DJI to date haven't pushed out a firmware to facilitate auto discharge when they are connected. That said I'm not too bothered and happy to keep the batteries unconnected to anything when storing them

  • @piee683
    @piee683 Před 3 lety

    Great information as always thank you,can I ask so is it perfectly safe to leave the battery in my air2s drone

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for the post and it's a tricky answer. If you leave the battery in the Air 2S it will auto-discharge normally so no worries about the charge. Where it gets tricky is that the auto-discharge produces some heat and that's never a good thing for the quad. It's small, but over time it worries me that it might unnecessarily fatigue the quad. The other concern is that if a battery does decide to go non-linear and misbehave, if it's out of the quad, you've only lost a battery. if it's inside the quad you've lost everything. To put this into perspective, I have a ton of quads in the shop and literally a hundred or more Lipo cells. I've been flying for years with a lot of other pilots and have never had, or heard of a Lipo fire with any of them. Its a rare issue, but like with home fires, we have to be careful because of the possibility. I hope that helps and my advice is always to fly more and worry less. Rick

    Hi, if you store the DJI mini 2 batteries out of the drone and either in the pouch or backwards in the hub, as you recomended and let the batts discharge, say down to 40-50%, or maybe less, can you then charge the batteries up to 90-100% just before you fly? Thanks!

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  Před 2 lety

      Yes, that will work fine. The key thing is not storing the cells at full charge for long periods of time. The latest firmware from DJI for the Mini 2 includes a self-discharge feature to automatically lower the charge after a few days to protect the cells. Be sure to download this firmware to help protect the cells. Thanks for the post! Rick

  • @20yearsagotoday1
    @20yearsagotoday1 Před 3 lety +7

    A quick fix is to use an elastic band. Place the batteries in the holder the right way around and put an elastic band around the top of them where the terminals are. This stops the batteries falling into place and because it’s elastic when you take one out it holds the other two in place.

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  Před 3 lety

      Gary, thanks for the post and that's a great suggestion. I have a few other pilots I fly with and they use a heavy-duty rubber band to do a similar thing. Anything that keeps the batteries from falling all the way into the socket is a good thing until we see a firmware update to sort out the logic.

      Thanks for the post and honestly the best plan would be to charge them the night before so they are fresh the next day for flying. If you have to charge them a few days early because you're traveling, you should store them in the hub so the "brains" in there can monitor the batteries and discharge them after 3 days in case you don't get a chance to fly. my 3 batteries - all charged in the same charging hub - seem to not be working. They were showing as fully charged. I put them into my drone and they showed as having 96% charge but they simultaneously said 00'00" flight time remaining. One battery wouldn't even get the drone off the ground "unable to take off" and another one forced the drone to emergency land even though it had 48% battery left.
    My first thought was that I had put too much voltage through them when charging but now after watching this video I'm less sure. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks team!

    Maybe it’d be helpful to edit the title of the video adding the issue has been fixed by DJI.
    From the recent comments and the ever more exposure to the drone market, people may find this video confused, but the video still serves as part of the history

    Hey Rick what if I got a brand new mini 2 that I haven't even opened the box yet? Am I going to be in good shape or do I need to do something???

      George, you're going to be fine and it's an incredible machine that you're going to love flying. The only thing you'll need to remember is to never put your batteries away fully charged, especially into the hub. If you have them out of the hub (and drone) they will auto-discharge if needed. My routine is to fly them down to about 30% and put them away. The next time I want to fly I charge them and head out to the lake for some fun. Let me know if you have any other questions and consider subscribing to the channel so you don't miss anything. Rick

    Good info. But my issue is my Mini 2 nor my controller will not turn on. All batteries are charged up. Push the button to turn on and the lights light up and then go out. Nothing will turn on. Any ideas?

      Harold, I replied to your other comment with this solution - hold the power buttons until the LED's strobe all the way up and you'll hear a tone to turn the drone and controller on. Try that and let me know if that's the fix. If not, we can try something else.

    I can do the battery out of my 3 pocket storage, but I canot turn them around and and reinsert. My DJI Mini 2 storage has a moulded guide runner that fits each battery and does not allow the battery to seat to the bottom, only half way in. So I will try small block of fire proof stuff inside a metal contatner.

    out of 3 batteries, 2 were fully charged but the 3rd was initially charging but somehow it went cranky with only one light blinking. How do I rectify it? Many thanks

    Hello kind sir, I finally got the correct video showing how to charge both battery & controller usung the mini hardware. The video I had posted was as you stated charging the controller using a battery to do so. This one is physically increasing the voltage on the battery & the controller at the same time. Sorry for the bad video. Ray C. Florida

    If your leave the batteries on the 6 way white charger unplugged the 4 batteries will auto discharge as normal. You can also discharge the batteries it appears with the 6 way charge if you plug them in with it disconnected but have to test further. It appears the pins must be pushed in for the batteries to auto discharge now...

    You can’t out batteries of the Mini 2 in to the hub backwards on all models I guess because mine won’t do that. There is a tung and grove feature there to prevent the battery from sliding in all the way. So I use a fat rubber band around the contacts of the hub and then slide batteries in normally.

    Fast forward 14 months (7/22). I just bought a Mini 2 Fly More. One battery shipped in the drone, the other two in the charging hub. I've read that DJI was working on this "problem", but yet... So I charged all 3 batts, removed them from the hub and I see no discharge after three days. All indicate fully charged. I don't know what to believe.

    But how do you know if it’s 30% to 40% charge to keep them up in the winter for storage like in my spark batteries that has a button to check what level of charge they have.

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for the post and you have to slide them back into the drone or the controller to check the charge level. I wish they put an indicator on the batteries as well but they were trying to minimize weight. Stay tuned for more clips posting soon. Rick

    How to put the batteries backwards in the charging hub tho there is a plastic line on the inside which prevents that to happen?

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  Před 3 lety +1

      That rib makes it a little tight but they will slide in OK after a few tries. You can also use a rubber band on the top of the batteries to keep them from fully sliding into the holder. The key is to prevent the contact from touching so they can auto-discharge when now in use. The best idea is to pull them out of the charging hub when you get home and pop them into a Lipo bag for storage. Thanks for the post!
