Hey team - DJI have released a firmware fix for this issue - check out my update video here czcams.com/video/u2px0BHOH2s/video.html
Noob
I have no idea how this is a thing when unlike their fpv drone the batteries don't have their own firmware. I tried to test it but, the charging hub check battery charge gets triggered just bouncing around in there occasionally and that resets the timer from my understanding.
I don't know why, but the pause to remove had me howling.
Why can't EE's make batteries, that when full, stop taking charge? Doesn't seem like it's on par with fusion.
How do my batteries use the firmware to fix? Do I need to plug the batteries into the controller? Thanks!
Thanks for this original video and for the update!
thx! very usefull! but don't go too heavy with the sound effects... that was a bit annoying.
Thank you for watching, and for the feedback! Yes I have had a couple of comments about the sound effects - I was just trying to switch things up a bit but it appears I have overdone it 😬- definitely a learning for future videos - thank you 🙏😊
I didn't even notice the sound effects😂
@@dimagass7801 Yay! Somebody who didn't mind! 😁👍🤣
I agree. I stumbled upon this channel the other day and it's a little gem that seems massively under-subscribed in my opinion as your content is clean/smooth, easy to listen to but regards the sounds, one or two is OK but that's about it.
@@whothefcukrmutd2008 Oh wow thank you so much for your support! Yes I am hearing everyone loud and clear about the sound effects - well noted. Thank you for the kind way you expressed your feedback :-)
OMG thankyou! just bought the Mini 2 and didn't know about the inability to discharge when left in the charger or drone!
You're very welcome - best to know right?
Haven't used mine in 3 months and they discharged and went into hibernation. They were stored in the hub. But after learning about this I'll start leaving them like that to be safe. Thanks for this video. Keep on top of firmware updates for older batteries.
Sounds like your ones were ok, which is great. Thanks for watching - I appreciate the comment 🙏
@@GetBusyLiving Just charged them fully and ran them app is saying 22min at 100%
Ok - that’s interesting 🧐
Really valid point on the batteries...glad you made a big point about this. Lots of pilots may not rotate their batteries also which means over usage on one battery. Really pleased you brought this up. Thank you
Thanks MrClarky, I appreciate that! The good news is DJI have released a firmware fix - check out my update here czcams.com/video/u2px0BHOH2s/video.html Thanks again for watching! 🙏
Yes, rotating use of spare batteries is relevant for all battery types. I do this with the three batteries I have for my Canon 5D DSLR camera, to prevent problems with battery life.
@@petesig93 Good call!
czcams.com/video/zRY4S73BEkU/video.html
used to this already due to flying fpv quads with non smart lipo batteries. Was actually suprised the DJI batteries discharge themselves to storage levels which is pretty convenient. Nice to know they need to be out of the charger to do this I did not know that.
Hey no problem AndrewF - by the way not sure if you knew, but they have released a firmware fix for this now - check out my update video here - czcams.com/video/u2px0BHOH2s/video.html

Instead of turning around the batteries in the hub, I bought a small Lipo battery storage bag. Allows auto discharge and small enough to fit inside Mini 2 bag. Bag is fireproof so useful for airline holiday flights when we eventually get back to normal holidays!
Oh wow that sounds perfect! Are you able to post a link so I (and others) could check it out? Thanks for the tip!
@@GetBusyLiving you can get them really cheap on ebay. If you go on holiday you are supposed to use them to transport the batteries in the airplane.

your videos helped me get off the ground in minutes, not crash, and really enjoy the product. Thanks!
That's awesome mate, I'm glad I could help! By the way, regarding this video, DJI have released a firmware fix, you can check out the details in my follow up video here - czcams.com/video/u2px0BHOH2s/video.html
Thanks for the tip. I am waiting on my Mini 2 fly more kit now. This will really help me out. Thanks for making this video; so glad I ran across it.
I was in a panic when I watched this video but then I discovered that the batteries do actually discharge on their own while in the charging hub. All my batteries have dropped to 70% in a week after fully charged. It’s possible that DJI made some changes since you released this video. But thanks for bringing this to my attention
Youare correct, they updated the firmware

1. Don't store your batteries in the charging hub or the drone
2. You can use Mini 2 and Mini batteries in each drone, BUT the Mini 2 with a Mini battery will NOT be less than 249 grams because the battery is heavier
3.Use the hub to charge something like your phone to discharge the batteries to between 50-60% as recommended by DJI for storage until you charge for use
4. Mini batteries are a bit cheaper to purchase spares for either.
Thanks for the builds Gomez, agree with all of your points 👍
You deserve an award
this video is filled with 7 minutes of pure BS. thank you for the summary!

@@nicsa1073 That's not fair. This is information that may be common knowledge to some but is still unknown to others. Even though he is a bit dramatic about how quickly things can go south, I believe he is spot on. I have used LiPo batteries with airplanes for 10 years, those did not have management boards but would puff if left at 100% for extended periods od time.

My mini 2 just arrived today and the first thing I did was charge all the batteries in prep for tomorrow’s maiden flight. Jumped into bed, watched this video then proceeded to remove all the batteries from the hub. Glad I found this video. 😁
Ha ha thanks for that and sorry I disturbed your sleep! I think you'd have been fine but hey, better safe than sorry right? I have seen this tip before and tested my three batteries by charging and then leaving in the hub. Results is each battery discharges 2% per 24 hours so I am confident my batteries will stay in good shape still leaving in the hub. Some may be having firmware issues..
Good work mate - yes based on lots of comments I am seeing it does appear to be an issue for some but not for others.
Still better don't charge them full if not needed. Extra charging cycles are also adding to battery degradation

I tossed in foam inserts so I can use them as a storage case and not worry about the battery issues like swelling or whatever. I can pop them out anytime and use it as a charger again. I ended up spending $40 bucks where I can charge all 3 or 4 at once. I so far haven’t needed to use it after I went through all 3 batteries and still need to get back in the air. Loving my Mini 2. I hope by Black Friday I can maybe buy the Air 2s and getting it on a sweet deal. “Crossing Fingers”

Mini 1 is lithium iron so not a problem
Simply Brilliant. Concise and entertaining ;)
Thanks Bunjee82, I really appreciate that!
Extremely useful information, Thank You
Don't Panic! My understanding of LiPo batteries is that, yes you need to store them somewhere in the 50-60% range when they will be not used for extended periods of time, like several months. I fly 3 or 4 times a week but never know when that opportunity might arise. Keeping the batteries stored at 100% for days or even a couple of weeks at a time should not hurt them or make them puffy. If I know for sure that I will not fly for a couple of weeks or longer, I will drop the charge to 50%. I have followed this rule and have had my batteries for almost 2 years with little or no loss of flight time or performance.
Plus the cost of a new battery is minimal, I would risk damage to have batteries ready to go and not miss a chance. I was lucky enough to catch a coyote killing a goose because I had fully charged batteries ready to go.
Namaste Bitches!

Turning batteries round puts to much stress on the hub sides I think, I pop a penny under each battery in the charging hub when not getting used for a while, works for me👍
Yes after trying that myself I tend to agree. I've ended up just putting them in normally but not pushing all the way in. I do need some sort of buffer/pad though, that's a good idea.

@@GetBusyLiving right . but can we still put discharged battery inside hub? I have another issue like not getting satellites signal for gps. May be I was flying indoors.
@@LittleSteps000 Yes you can put a discharged battery in the hub. The issue was/is with a fully charged battery in the hub and not discharging properly and therefore risking the chance of it not discharging, and then swelling and/or damaging itself. As for your satellites yes, it probably was because you were flying indoors, the drone needs clear line of sight to the sky.
@@GetBusyLiving thanks for the reply....but the putting battery in the hub without latching it fully was an awesome idea 👍

Another tip: buy a quick charge power bank. I use mine to discharge batteries into when I want to bring the charge down, and then to top them back up on the go. Means you don't have to wait at home while they charge.
OH THAT IS A SUPER TIP! Thanks for sharing that one, I will do that and I hope others see this tip as well! 👍👍👍
@@GetBusyLiving brilliant! If you get one with a double output (I have one with USB C power delivery and standard USB with quick charge 3.0) you can actually charge two batteries simultaneously on the way to your location. One in the hub and one in the drone. If you choose your case carefully you can have it all plugged in charging while you are walking. It's one reason why I'm hesitant to upgrade from the Mini 2 as I don't think I could do without this option now!
@@chrisbaishdrones Oh MAN the tips keep coming! This is gold!
Where do you get the quick charge power bank? Are you speaking about the one that comes with the fly more combo?
It’s important to know Lipos also hate being stored at low voltage. So you don’t want to leave your batteries discharged after you’re done flying especially if it will be a while until you fly again. They like to be mid charge in that 40-60% range you mentioned. You also want to store them in moderate temperature environments. Lipos are awesome but they’re also pretty dangerous if people don’t know the basics.
Yes very important points - thanks for the reminders! 👍
Thank you!
It’s incredible how little people understand these. It’s possibly the power source most Americans handle most often and they’re clueless
Ok this is great and thank heaps for the updates, much appreciated. Very informative.

I legit panic opened my battery out of my drone and put it into the hub when he said he'll wait lmaoo
Ha ha that's classic! 🤣
Waiting 5 days to discharge my batteries really annoys me. I hadn't thought about using the usb to slowly discharge the hub with my cell phone. Great idea. Also, seating them backwards is another great idea. I love my mini 2 and even bought 4 extra batteries for the future. I also have the Mavic Air 1. I learned the hard way as I flew it so much that I wore out all three batteries over one year of constant flying. So this time I'm paying attention to the maintenance of all my drone batteries. It is very difficult to find Mavic Air 1 batteries because it's already considered outdated by DJI and I don't think they make them anymore. This leads me to one other good idea. Buy extra batteries. There is no point in buying an expensive drone if you ware out your batteries and can't get new ones. DJI kicks out drones so fast that they often discontinue support once your drone is a couple years old. These are all intelligent flight batteries. Your drone will not fly with substitute batteries. So in order to stay in the air, keep some new batteries in storage or get used to buying new drones about once a year.
Hey thanks for the amazing response! That's a good point actually, might as well buy some more batteries to help future proof yourself - at the end of the day it's a relatively small investment. 👍👍 Thanks for tuning in and for sharing your thoughts! 🙏

First of all congratulations for the video... what I understand is... that once they are 100% loaded in the HUB... you can use the HUB to load them, but once loaded, remove them from the HUB compartment and store them for example in a BACKPACK or BAG that can store the batteries? I contacted dji about this. They said if your batteries are discharged to around 70 percent then they may be stored in the hub. After all they do ship the batteries in the hub. And who knows how long they sit at a retail store. It's not as if people are dropping hundreds of dollars everyday on drones or equipment.
Yes that is true. It only seems to be a problem if they are FULLY charged. Lipo batteries do not like to be stored fully charged.
Thank you for the great informative video on batteries, I was wondering if I was doing the correct things , I wasn’t

Thanks for the great video,,,, 👍 down here in Manawatu just got my first drone and am loving it,,,
It's better to just charge your batteries up to 60% after use, rather than fully. You don't even need to think about auto discharging then. Also, you are wasting charge because that extra 40% you don't need is a wasted part-charge cycle, and lipos have a finite number. On the flip side, if you do fully charge the batteries but end up cancelling your flight, just use the hub to manually discharge them back down. However, I don't agree with your advice to leave them discharged until just before you fly. It's bad for them too. Top them up to 60% for storage.
Hi there - yes I agree, you raised some good points. Sorry if I wasn't clear in the video, I wasn't meaning leaving them FULLY discharged until needing them, only down at around the 50-60% level.
I am not going to obsess over this. I don’t want to leave the batteries partially discharged, as that stops going out flying on impulse - but what I will do is turn the batteries around in charging hub once charged, so they can slightly discharge if left. In actual fact I usually fly my Mini 2 at least 3-4 times a week, so it is usually only a couple days before I will be using again anyway
yeah great idea - I think that's a really good solution 👍

Thank you so much - I appreciate that! 😊 I love Germany - I would go every year with my job until the pandemic hit, hopefully I can do that again soon!
It’s also bad to store the batteries at 0%. They should be stored at ~70% when not in use. Hence the auto discharge to 70%.
Yes that's 100% correct.
but how should that work, if charging hub, is going to charge the batteries from the most charged to the least charged? You must therefore need to remove each battery and load your phone, than change again...is quite annoying
Thanks for your video. I bought my mini 2 last year and almost always leave the batteries in the charging hub. I noticed that the batteries were not fully charged when I use them in the drone. At max around 95% but sometimes even less. I now understand that it's the discharging function. But it also happens when I leave them in the charging hub. It's maybe an update from DJI...
Hi mate - yes this problem was fixed by DJI some time ago via a firmware update for this now - check out my update video here - czcams.com/video/u2px0BHOH2s/video.html
Cheers! 👍
Thank you mate! That's some excellent advice- much appreciated!

RC planes and heli's use LIPO batteries and it is recommended to store them at 3.8 volts per cell, roughly 30% charge. Most chargers sold for LIPO's have a built in feature that will either charge or discharge to this level automatically. I have been doing this for years now and will store my Mini 2 batteries at 30%.
Yes that's true mate, and good on you - you obviously know your stuff. By the way, in case you didn't hear that DJI have released a firmware fix - I have made an update video here czcams.com/video/u2px0BHOH2s/video.html
Cheers!
What? 30% is way too low. 60% is optimal, not over 80%.
Hey bro ski 3.8 per cell should be closer to 50%
DJI mini 2 manual states store at 30%
You can store the batteries as normal in the hub, and not push them all the way in. That way they can discharge, and if you need to charge them just push them in all the way.
Oh that's a really nice tip - thanks for sharing!
Thanks, I just did that after reading your comment. I just pulled the batteries out a bit to make them not click in.
Wish if i came across this video few months back, could have saved one of my batteries from DJI MINI 2 Fly more combo pack. Left Fully charged all 3 batteries in hub, now 1 battery doesn't charge at all. However, after going through this video feeling luck, other 2 survived. Thanks for video.

Yes, the mini batteries weigh more, but the mini 2 weighs less, so you should be under 250g. By my scales, the mini 2 with mini 2 battery weighs 232g. I know it's advertised 249, but it isn't really.
Which also gives them even more wiggle room to add some sensors in the mini 3 👍🙏
@@GetBusyLiving Not really, I think the reason is Japan has a 200g limit, so putting in a half sized battery they stay under 200g. Something like that.
I've got the dji mini and the batteries discharge themselves automatically
Yeah it was an intermittent problem that affected some people but not everyone. You're all sweet then 👍👍
Wow what a great video absolutely loved it!
Great job
Thx for sharing!!
Oh thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it! That's made my day! Thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to let me know! 🙏
Thanks for this very helpful information. With your tips, I can make my dji drone battery last longer by taking notes of some of the advise.

It bugs me this is no popular opinion. I've been studying lipo, and liion for a few years now and while its not optimal to store your cells at 100 soc, it's not nearly as bad as storing them at 0 soc. When stored at either extreme end of the spectrum, the cells begin to develop what are called dendrites. Which is small metal spikes that build off the cathode and anode. When these spikes pierce the dielectric separating the two a soft short circuit can occur, greatly reducing all usable parameters of the cell except weight. I'd be very curious to see two identical cells stored side by side in exact same process except soc.
Yes you are right it is bad storing them at no charge as well. Finicky little buggers aren't they!? 🤣
Many thanks for your detailed explanations - very interesting! 👍

Amazingly smart and clever man. Where would we be without people like this in the world right!?
VERY informative. As a new drone pilot who owns a mini SE, I can tell you that CZcams is filled with a lot of basic information such as the difference between the SE and Mini 2... All good information but would like to springboard from there somewhat. This is where information such as you are presenting comes in, not only handy, but actually has a "wow" factor to it.
Please, more technical information like this. Would love to see a side-by-side comparison of the internal workings of the SE versus the 2... particularly with the camera which I understand is exactly the same but is software-ed down to a 2.7 quality. Things like that would be really great to grab ahold of especially if it's something that we could incorporate and upgrade our drone. In any event nice job. After watching I gave you a like and subscribed.
Oh wow - that is super kind of you to say! Thank you so much! And thanks for the sub! 🙏
Great video. These batteries aren't cheap but unfortunately I already learned this the hard way. You would think paying $700-$3000 that the company would have said something in the booklet or even the sales people but no. I'm not knocking there products. i love my Mavic but after seeing this video I wanted to thank you. This will save a lot of headaches and frustration for many people

Thanks for the video; very informative as always. I am unable to turn the batteries around on my Mini2 changer (does not fit backward), so I use a large rubber band instead around the 3 batteries. This keeps them from dropping into the charger's connectors.

Auto discharge! Amazing, i was wondering this as I charged to 100% before I learned I shouldn't and the next day one was on 98, so this isn't a failing battery, good to know.

Excellent advice, especially about charging another device to discharge tge batteries. BTW, the Mavic Mini batteries should be stored at 60% for the long term, not being LiPO.

Another reason I'm still happy having Mavic Mini 1: the 18650 cylindrical cells used in MM1 smart batteries don't bloat in contrast to Mini 2's LiPo-Cells, the Mini 1 can't be watched using DJI's spy tool AirScope, antenna directors can be used to increase range, and some other very nice things can be enabled.

It's far from the most important feature of litchi but just one little bonus "that's nice" feature of the after-market flight app. You can set the 5 day self discharge to 70% timer to any time from 1 to 10 days.
I set mine to 9 or 10 due to a common habit of charging everything Friday night, intending to fly on the weekend. Something comes up, reschedule for the following weekend, and prep for that is rushed.
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate your support! 🙏

great video- great info- thanks. FYI, the batteries can NOT be put in REVERSE int he chargin hub. Maybe they could have before but not now. There is a groove and and indent that prevent you from being able to reverse it.
