    Loved this video. As an LCSW who works in mental health, I’m still benefiting from my bachelor in psychology.

    As someone who has a BSW and MSW, I agree that you do not need a BSW to become a social worker. However, I would say getting a BSW will provide a lot more social work exposure and knowledge in comparison to those who only have a MSW. Also, a BSW is a well rounded degree which mean a lot of classes from the disciplines she named are required in a BSW program. I took at least one class from all of those disciplines. I also had the luxury of having four internships instead of two (three in undergrad and one in masters). I would also add Human Service degree to this list as it mirrors social work the most. In addition , education, nursing administration, communications mesh well with social work also. In my experience, I have witness people who in majored in the Arts struggle a bit in grad school with practical skills. However, undergraduate majors are not as important as character. This field is more so about the passion to help and the compassion you are able to show for others. Most importantly, being self reflective. Theories and research are the guide but the best tool social workers have are their use of self. This will guide you through whichever social work path you take.

    My undergraduate degree is in criminal justice with minors in political science and international studies. I had statistics and research methods with social work students. I also worked for programs that were specifically for disadvantaged individuals and a great deal of my colleagues had degrees in social work. I was surprised you didn’t say criminal justice.

      I’m currently trying to finish my B.A. in Criminal Justice and I’m considering applying to an MSW program. I think CJ may be a good undergraduate degree for Social Work, especially for people who plan to work in Corrections or with people fighting addictions.

    Thank you so much for this video! 🙏❤️ I’m currently applying to MSW programs and I have a Bachelors in English with a minor in French. I’d make a strong argument for English as an undergraduate degree for entry into social work because a lot of our time in college is spent analyzing texts and characters with various forms of criticism, ie: feminist, environmental, psychoanalytical, etc. we have to become curators of these worlds where things like socio-economic status, language, trauma and other factors come into play. Also, we write. A lot. 🤣Tons of reading and writing. I think this prepares us for longer graduate level essays or dissertations. Lastly, as humanities majors we have to work harder getting in volunteer experience in a variety of settings because frankly a lot of employers won’t understand what you can bring to the table. We learn to fuse our interests with practical service applications, like grant writing for example 😊 I love your videos so much, thank you for all you do! 😘

      Thank you for this comment. I totally agree! I think you make a very strong argument. My director at my prior job actually had a degree in English, even though we worked in Philanthropy/community service.

    So I graduate with my bachelors in psychology in two weeks and I think I wanna pursue my masters in social work. In the end I want to become a clinical therapist so I’m not sure if i am taking the correct route with this. Also my school doesn’t offer masters in psychology that’s why I’m pursuing my MSW but I’m not sure if this is the correct route to take if I want to be a clinical therapist.

    👋 Hello!
    Thanks in advance for these videos they really help! Do you know of any agencies that only require a BSW because it seems like most are looking for an MSW in order to be a travel social worker? My degree is from Barry University with a specialization in social welfare. I graduated since 2013 and since I have been working in nursing facilities as a social worker assistant. I also worked in substance abuse detox centers, psych patients in nursing facilities and as a CARES assessor for the Florida Department of Elder Affairs. I plan to go back for my MSW ASAP hopefully fully online since I still need flexibility in order to still work!
    If you can please do a video regarding agencies that allow you to work with only a BSW/ or related degree and years of experience please share!!! If you know of a school that will accept my degree and experience for advance standing so I don’t have to go for 2 years to get my MSW.
    Looking forward to your response or anyone who comes across this post please feel free to respond!! Be safe and be well! God bless!!❤️

    So all Bachelor's of Arts degrees. How about a Bachelor's of Science?

    • @MindyourSociety
      @MindyourSociety  Před 3 lety

      I didn’t break it up by a BA in arts vs science. So these are my recommendations regardless. Social Work is not traditionally a science based degree so thats why the bachelor degrees I recommend aren’t science based.

    • @jermiahjones3265
      @jermiahjones3265 Před 3 lety +1

      BA or BS for some of these course is based on the school and what they require for the degree. My I have a bachelors of science in Social Work. My school also a BS in Psychology. However we have to take more science class than average program. Also bio was heavily incorporated into my clinical classes. You can take a science major like bio and become a social worker. Understanding how the brain and body works and how it impacts behavior is extremely important. I had to learn about what part of the brain impacts what part of the body. What part effects decision making and etc. Also, pharmacology is important in clinical social work. Understand psychotropic medication, what it is used for, how it works and the side effects are extremely important. As a hospital Social Worker who works directly with a psychologist the social workers makes recommendations based on behaviors and advocates on behalf of clients. Of course medications is ultimately decided by psychiatrist. However, social workers often report what is observed to the psychiatrist. So different science majors can be helpful.

    • @jermiahjones3265
      @jermiahjones3265 Před 3 lety +2

      Also, I would recommend science degree. She say in her videos all the time that you are not pigeonholed to the traditional social work job many social workers are also psychiatrist, lawyers, nurses, politicians and etc. Social workers wear many hats in and outside traditional social work job. Just because your name plate says another title doesn’t mean you cannot incorporate the same skills, principles and values into another practice. I always say once a Social Worker always a Social Worker.
