I have created a 100 page dummy book, fully sketched out and 1 chapter has been created in full art in Procreate. I have written the full manuscript too. This is the first and only ( maybe ) book I plan on publishing. I do not have a portfolio yet for illustration as this is my first book. :) I am wondering if I should self-publish or find an agent + publisher for this one book. I love all your videos xX i'not sure what the title could be for my proposed video idea but I am essentially someone who has been creating a children's book for some years. it is highly detailed and has taken an extreme amount of time, revisions etc. I found your videos about literary agents highly informative, but what changes when one creates what they feel may be their only publication, one which they feel deserves high appraisal by its own merits, high loyalties etc. I think, perhaps. about jk Rowling and the success of her books. what is the strategy for a first time author/illustrator with a vision of creating that monumental story - how do they then think about literary agents when it is one sole story they are creating, and one they think will make huge amounts of money? I am not someone who can create a book within a year or two. my medium subscribes that I must work on years and years to complete a book.

I was wondering, is it possible to be illustrating as a part-time gig while also being represented by an agent? In my case, I am working as an animator full-time and I’ve always been interested in trying out book illustration on the side. I wonder if agencies prioritize illustrators who are looking to work full time? • @AnooshaSyed
      @AnooshaSyed  Před rokem

      Hey! There are some agents who might prioritize people likethat but I think it’s a small minority and mostly their concern is just artists who aren’t fully commited to the ‘idea’ of illustration (like just trying it out). Most agents totally understand that day jobs are a thing and are ok with part time freelancers

      @AnooshaSyed  Před 2 lety

      Hi karen! I don't know about this agency but personally this feels quite exploitative; I have never heard of a required PAID course for being represented so I am very suspicious.

    Great video Anoosha! I have a quick question about pitching dummies to agencies. Do you just host the dummy in your website and send them over with a link? How do you make sure they won't "steal" your idea for the book? Thanks!

    • @AnooshaSyed
      @AnooshaSyed  Před 3 lety

      The dummy would most likely be either an attachment to their query form, or included as a link to a password protected page in your portfolio site. I can’t think of any reason why an agent would ‘steal’ your work... they aren’t writers or artists so won’t profit from it?

  • @tiarastokes3897
    @tiarastokes3897 Před 3 lety +1

    If one of the main reasons one is getting an agent is to submit to publishers who don't accept unsolicited submissions (besides from agents): once you have an agent, if you already have some publishers in mind you want to submit to first, how do you go about bringing that up with your agent, if you can? Do the agents make the plans on where to submit to, or can you make those decisions as well? And how early can you bring it up with them after you've officially partnered with them?
    Sorry, I have a lot of questions lol. Hopefully it all makes sense!

    • @AnooshaSyed
      @AnooshaSyed  Před 3 lety +1

      You can bring up these questions as early as your initial phone call when you’re looking for an agent! This will also insure that you guys are on the same page on what your goals are. Otherwise, anything in your relationship you can bring up the topic and let them know where you’d like to submit to and how you two can work together and move forward with it. Your agent might suggest where to submit if they feel like your work would fit best somewhere, but you can always let them know if you want to go in a different direction. It does depend on whether your agent has those contacts that you’re after!

    • @AnooshaSyed
      @AnooshaSyed  Před 3 lety +2

      Totally possible to do both! In fact, people usually start part-time first before they go full freelance. People will have a ‘day job’ since at the beginning it is tough to build up your client list and establish yourself as a freelancer, and eventually as you grow you could choose to to full time (for a lot of people that is the goal!). But for others, they decide they just have multiple interests. For me, I recently got a day job in animation, more so because that is another passion of mine and want to branch out from illustration, and now I do illustration work kind of part time.

    where is your art? what are your sales for the year? what is your market? what is your pricing? where did you study? what galleries are you in??.......or are you just making videos on how to, and not knowing how to?

      If you've watched any of my videos you'd know my background.
      You can find my art at anooshasyed.com. I am an award winning professional children's book illustrator with over twenty books published so far, with clients including Netflix, Google, and Disney.
      I can't disclose my pricing or sales because that's private information, but I consider myself to be a successful illustrator. I studied at Ceruleum Ecole d'arts visuels in Switzerland with a degree in Illustration, and have been featured in galleries including Gallery Nucleus, QPop, and Light Grey Art Gallery.
      I hope that qualifies me enough to be creating video content, I'm just trying to share my knowledge and help other creatives.
