  • Hello Art Friends! I'm Anoosha Syed, a professional children's book illustrator and today we are talking about Publishing Portfolios!
I have a lot of people who are interested in becoming a picture book artist asking me what are the steps you take to illustrate books for a living. And I also have people who have been trying to make this into a career for a while, but aren’t really able to find work, asking me what they’re doing wrong.
There are a lot of things that go into becoming a successful illustrator, but really the most important thing you need is a good portfolio.
So today I will go over all the things you need to create a well-rounded portfolio that will attract art directors if are looking to work on picture books, chapter books and covers!
I will be talking about the following:
    00:00 - Intro
02:01 - Creating for your Target Audience
05:15 - Publishing Jobs: Picture Books, Chapter Books and Covers
06:48 - What to Put in Your Portfolio
    13:15 - Personal Projects
    19:20 - Arranging Your Portfolio
27:03 - Picture Book Checklist - What to include!
35:46 - Standing Out from the Crowd
41:41 - Other Things to Note
37:43 - When You and Your Publisher Have Different Ideas
    39:32 - Conclusion

I illustrated my own book... Then I illustrated a children's book for a student organization. I was going through a rough patch personally when I did my last book project and I don't think that it was my absolute best work. I would like to spend the summer working on a professional children's book portfolio and start looking for work! Thank you for your advice.

I love how transparent you are with everything. There's nothing more annoying than artists/makers that won't help or share to help others grow. I'm mainly interested in going into chapter books and book covers, but I love graphic novels and I'm going to write and illustrate one for my bachelors thesis. Does that make sense in regards to my portfolio? Would I make an extra rubric for it or include it in "chapter books"?

Avoid using copyrighted material for your portfolio! I was thinking using song lyrics as more like inspiration than actually using the text within your project :)

    Dear Anoosha.
Thank you for sharing such valuable content and for all the inspiration. Your energy affects and makes us to create more and have fun.
I have a question if you could kindly answer, or direct me if you have video about it.
What printer (if you print at home), or printing companies you use to print your artwork professionally/for sale?
    I truly appreciate your reply.
    Thank you again. ❤️

Hi! I use a canonTS6220 at home, or use catprint.com for outsourced printing

Thank you so much for making this, so helpful! I am confused about the fan art though, since it seems so legally risky. I've been avoiding it due to copyright reasons, even though it may help me a lot. Would you care to clarify? Thank you!

Some hard truths in here for me. I thought my portfolio was starting to look halfway decent, but I'm way off the mark. Again.

I have a question ! :o You said "if you are weirdly obsessed about a very specific topic and known for drawing it all the time, lean into it!". I loooove the color blue, and have the same love for cats. So in my art I often make blue backgrounds, things that are blue, I draw cats a lot. But I feel like building a porfolio around a specific color isn't the best idea. I'm I wrong ? 😅 Could I focus on cats ? Thank you if someone answer ! 😁

If you don’t have a portfolio then why not start with blue + cats? In my experience art about things you love often has more heart and it shows, plus you can always add other elements later?

Thank you so much for this, Anoosha!! I'm trying to figure out how to re-design my portfolio (and finally make it specific to children's book illo) so this couldn't come at a better time! 💕 All your content is so insightful and helpful, you're seriously an inspiration 🥰🥰
