    This really improved my consistency. I was using my arm throughout the whole stroke. During tight matches, this method would give and I'd be hitting the ball too late and spray it. But by concentrating on using my body to generate the power, and then using my arm/hand just to guide it (vs to generate power), it led to a more consistent, powerful stroke. Thanks a mill!

    I remember hitting the ball twice with loose arms and a full rotation. I could hear the ball give a nice pop on my racket, I remember how effortless it was and I remember slowly breathing out on the unit turn (like Federer). It was the best yet easiest shot I've made on court! Thanks for reinforcing the unit turn, Kevin!

  • @Slothspeare

    Thank you so much for this video. I've grown to really despise my forehand. My contact point is too late which is why I'm often off balance on my back foot. My elbow is too close to my body because my arms aren't extended enough for the unit turn. The unit turn on my backhand seems to come more natural to me. I presume it's because I'm stepping in with my dominant right leg as opposed to the left on my forehand side (in a classical close stance). It's so frustrating. Anyway, wishing you and your family all the best with your new adventure in Tulsa. You'll both be missed.

    I was doing some practise swings in my room with these tips in mind. Coiling the body and use the shoulder. I sensed that my arm was waaay more relaxed to almost just being there and flop around and that the lag and snap actually came pretty much by itself.
    Now I am still a very low level player, just playing seriously for a year (age 29) and I watched a lot of vids on how to improve my game. And I learned about the lag and snap and was using it ingame but with these tips I figured out I am using my arm wrong. I had too much tention and tried to force the hits too much, forcing the movements I learned with my arm/wrist.
    Hopefully the weather is decent tomorrow so that I can try to use this with practise. See how it feels.
    If you read this and think that I implemented it wrong, please correct me. =)

    Nice explanation of the modern forehand. The thing I don't like about Jack Sock's forehand is that he leads with his bent elbow which puts the arm in an awkward position during the swing. And it might put more stress on the tendons of the elbow and in the long run lead to elbow injuries. The Tsitsipas swing looks more like Feds who at age 38 has not had a major arm injury. If I copy anyone, it would be Fed.

    Kevin--I watched this a number of times and there is still a question. At the beginning you show that shoulders are turned more than hips (I am watching Tsisipas in particular) and your comment is 'hips are kinda facing inward". Are you asking us to turn shoulders more than hips but turn hips too? The reason I ask is I am not clear whether the uncoiling should be hips then shoulders, then arm, or hips/shoulders then arm. I try to do what Naomi O. does, and to me she is hips, then shoulders, then arm, much like a golfer, and it is a very distinct process (1-2-3). What do you advise? Not clear the way you describe or the way the video is shown....Thanks!

If I do a two handed forehand I have no problem getting to hit all the markers and lag, but that is not viable in a match. I need to get my forehand down already.

    The most common mistake that I see as a High School tennis coach is hitting off the back foot. You want to try to step in to the ball and unwind with the hips and core muscles. Yes your arm and wrist do generate racquet speed but the large muscles in your core and legs generate that extra power. So in a long rally or match your have the endurance to hit a heavy ball that wears your opponent down. I also drill my players to constantly hit deep with in three feet of the baseline at a minimum. You want to push your opponent back so you can attach. Pound from the ground by cranking around ( using hips and core like in this video) When I coach between sets I like to give easy to remember sayings that players can remember.

  • @marktace1
    @marktace1 Před 2 lety

    While you are 100% correct, it is important to note that for an ATP forehand once the unit turn is completed as the elbow extends the forearm needs to remain pronated. You can see this both with Sock and Tsitsipas. Of course you can still hit a powerful forehand even if your forearm supinates as you extend the elbow but you won’t get the same stretch shortening reaction that creates a bit more speed and spin. You’ll get lag in either case due to using your body properly but more spin and speed if you leave the forearm pronated as you extend the elbow.

    Dear ET, I agree that body helps to create more power, but You said that the swing is created by the body. After such statement I’m affraid that people will forget about hitting with arm. And in the end it’s the arm that should move faster :)

    • @murdochm463
      @murdochm463 Před 4 lety

      The arm is attached to the body and the hand, the element holding the racquet, is the part which, properly done, ends up moving fastest and thereby transmitting that speed to the racquet itself. Provided your arm/hand is relaxed rotating the shoulders will generate the speed and because of initial inertia the hand lag will happen. Then as the body extremity, the hand, moves along the circumference of the circle around the pivot centre, the trunk, it has no option but to move fastest, simply because those bodily attachments dictate that the time of rotation will be the same for all but the distance covered in that same unit of time will increase from centre to periphery. The racquet head will, of course, travel even faster.
      Lastly, one point not directly touched on by Kevin, is that if this rotation is then suddenly stopped the energy developed will flow towards the furthest moving point (centrifugal force). This is the other end of the lag at the start which arose from the inertia of getting the (relatively) heavy weight moving. Think of the action of cracking a whip and the speed that the tip consequently achieves - sure, that's a pure arm/hand movement but it's the rapid change of wrist direction which accellerates the whip tip.
      The whole process is essentially the same as executing a serve well. In each case the arm is incidental to the energy generation and serves only to, firstly, provide the loose connection so that the racquet head can be accellerated and, secondly, play a part in directing the ball through lateral movement.

    • @Marek333MM
      @Marek333MM Před 4 lety

      Murdoch M Dear Murdoch, what you’ve written it’s all true, but it works In discipline like baseball- one strike without a lot of control. Tennis is about power and precision with loose arm like here said you will never be precise. Among pros only Roger is so relaxed, but he is not the hardest hitter and he frames a lot. Almost all other pros hold their racquets much tighter then people think. And that’s why they are hitting with such power. Certainly not because they are super relaxed.

  • @Tennis_MenACE

    It has been well documented how terrible Jack’s action has been over the last... probably decade or so. The difference between him & Stefan is night & day.
    Jack attempts to swing his racket so close to his body that it’s almost impossible for him to swing it at all.
    Trying to massage the ball somewhere toward the general direction of the target.
    It doesn’t matter how fast you can push the racket. Pushing the racket, is still, pushing the racket, cough, JACK SOCK!!! cough, cough.
    Tsitsipas in a lot of ways does the complete opposite. After watching all the analysis however, he does only what he has to, what one should do. He just simply sticks his racket out at a decent arms length & swings it. He *belts* the ball.
    You couldn’t even rank them in the same solar system so to speak.

    • @Tennis_MenACE
      @Tennis_MenACE Před 4 lety

      It’s really ironic because your boy, Kevin, spells it out in the first... what? ten, twenty seconds of this video.
      “So many players get caught up in the cosmetics & don’t understand the fundamentals.”
      Alberto & Jack are *nothing* alike.
      There is nothing wrong with Alberto’s technique at all.
      The way it looks is not what it is about.
      Alberto saw the success he did because more often than not, he chose to actually *hit* the ball. Something that Jack indeed seems to know at least a little bit about, but hasn’t really physically done much of, if at all, since early 2017.
      I don’t “talk shit” about anyone.
      That would be rude......
      What I actually do is make the blatant observations that most certainly need to be made. I don’t “fail to realise” anything about Alberto’s tennis. I wasn’t talking about him in the first place; you dragged him into this. How could you possibly know beforehand my opinion on how good I think his tennis is?... You didn’t.
      Extravagant takebacks, pushing the racket along some “correct swing path”, trying to disperse force through the ball by massaging the surface of the ball; aka brushing up the back of the ball, & then finally pulling the racket up to an “ideal finishing position”; aka following through, is what Jack most often chooses to do.
      Where has that left him? Injured, tourless, & soul searching.
      Making millions is not definitive proof of a good ball striking action.
      The limitations have been removed. For God sake, people can “make millions”, a decent living now by simultaneously shaking their ass on Instagram, & promoting products they don’t believe in & would never buy themselves.
      Of course, in the end, tennis coaching is not about what works anymore. It’s about fooling the snowflakes who can’t strike a flying projectile into thinking that their tennis is improving, & draining their pockets of their hard earned money once these “pros” have finished dumping tonnes of bullshit advice on top of them.
      It’s not like Jack is incapable. Jack, when he gets his mind right, can strike. Violently well at that. He just for the longest time has not had faith in himself. He just chooses not to.

      Wi!l How can you compare Millions earned by Sock with money made on Instagram?
      Jack made it competing against other pros. He is injured not because of his tecnique.
      I wonder how much money did you earned on the court?
      Reading your comments one can easily understand that your knowledge about high level tennis is none - so, your personal tennis level must be low - 3.5 NTRP max, obvious conclusion is that you earned Zero money on court.
      So, Please do not advise Jack Sock how he should play, because it’s simply ridiculous :)

    • @Tennis_MenACE
      @Tennis_MenACE Před 4 lety

      Alright... I’ll just address the points you noted.
      Because like tennis, you can make millions doing almost anything without *actually doing it* using smoke & mirrors, lying to yourself, & being fake.
      Donald Trump is “president”, Cardi B is a “musican”, Jack Sock’s form that has him losing early in ITF challenger tournaments is for whatever reason sighted as “good technique one should use in their game”.
      He’s not injured because of his technique... well, he reckons this time around he fell off his snowboard... 🙄
      How much money have I made playing tennis? Well, thankfully plenty enough to afford a mobile phone with an internet connection which allows me to tell you how things really are.
      What’s truely amazing is that you’re telling me I’m wrong, yet providing no explanation or evidence to prove any of the points you’ve made. Apart from “durrr” Jack Sock’s a pro” of course.
      It doesn’t matter what level I play at. Some of times greatest coaches & mentors have been terrible ball strikers themselves, but that does in no way mean that they know nothing about the physics of ball striking in general.
      Simultaneously, many, if not most gun players couldn’t explain the physics behind what they do to save their lives.
      Again. Jack knows how to strike. He’s just to practise striking & not try take these dotty shortcuts.
      I am not advising Jack of anything. I have better players to deal with. ; )
