I learned to drive in Pittsburgh. This was nearly my exact daily drive for many years. I view Pittsburgh as training wheels for Europe. It's easily one of the most confusing driving cities in the US which means if you can handle yourself there, every other city is fairly easy. Every interchange is unique, every bridge is it's own animal, and it's one of the few cities with triangular blocks. The problem with Pittsburgh (other than someone designed the road system in a saloon) is PENDOT. I swear it's a job security racket where they fix the roads just well enough so that by the time one end is all patched up they're back on the other end fixing it.

I was born & raised in Pgh and also learned to drive there. Mostly in the suburbs, but I'd often go visit my dad at his office dahntahn. I lived at home during college; I'd drive from the "Saath Hills" to Oakland to go to Pitt almost every day, in a 4-speed manual transmission and Volkswagen Fox with no AC and no power steering. I'd sometimes parallel park facing downhill on the cobblestone streets. Then I moved out of state and I got spoiled. I went back to my dad's office a couple years ago on Wood Street, and Mr. Regular's reaction reminded me of how I had felt driving dahntahn. Used to be second nature to me, but that was a long time ago.
I will say though, now that I have a Miata that I store at my parents' house ahtside the city, I have lots of fun doing mini hill climbs in Butler County.
Oh yeah I forgot - I made four trips to Germany last year. Driving through German towns about gave me a nervous breakdown. The Autobahn, I freaked at first, but I got used to it. But the cities like Regensberg, or even Straubing, with the narrow cobblestone streets dating back hundreds of years...

Europe isn't bad to drive in. Maybe some of the oldest, most historical city centers in Germany or France, are difficult to drive around, but everything else is quite nice. In my experience, it's as comfortable to drive in Scandinavia as it is in the United States, for instance.

@@peacefrog0521 hey man, can you tell me what freaked you out on the autobahn?
Was it just the speed of some cars?
Because the laws there are pretty strict and straight forward.
Only overtaking on the left lane and if there are three or more lanes only the far left is for going really fast, except the other lanes are completely empty.
It’s absolutely forbidden to overtake on the right, so there’s not so much to worry about.
Oh and you definitely shouldn’t drive too slow on the left lane’s even when it seems empty, because you never now when someone comes from behind, doing 250kmh.
That’s also the reason, why it’s the law to drive on the farest right lane possible, when everything is free.
You will get a Ticket when you’re constantly driving on the left lane, when there’s no reason to do that (I.e. slower cars or semis on the right lanes).

Dear Mr Regular and The Roman,
Please make your next trip to South America or Mexico. I'm a Brit living in Lima and I've noticed so many great 'regular' cars here. They're particularly well-preserved in Lima as it almost never rains. Sure, there are the usual Beetles and US classics, but the regularness maxes out with 90s Sentras that are everywhere. Seriously, they've even continued making them in Mexico and it's pretty much the most common car here in Peru.
If you're hankering for some New Zealand level scenery or British level weirdness, try Peru.
    Best wishes,
    Rich

And while I love it to address RCR’s comment about the automatics being just as good, they are less fun than the manuals. And btw it’s easy to tell who’s not from Pittsburgh in the comments from anyone criticizing how he’s driving. A few things for outsiders. A Pittsburgh left is a real thing and the roads do suck and buildings do just fall on cars and it is very confusing to drive in Pittsburgh, so he’s not driving like a spaz. Pittsburgh makes people who have driven there all their lives want to commit seppuku: hills to steep to walk, roads that have not been maintained since the Pleistocene Era, bridges, tunnels, constant construction (pretend construction)… The Ho Chi Minh Trail was better than any Pennsylvania road.
