  • Bowtie boy Ryan's got a big play for using big displacement to make big power for his entry in our first MuscleTrux series match up. Kevin's not allowed in the shop as Ryan's adding new heads, a new valve train, a pro-flo EFI throttle body, and intake to his 454 to wake up the potential in this big V-8.
    Follow the match up in the MuscleTrux Wars playlist:

      Mr Groovy 2 Shoes , Very true. I usually have at least 4 hours of footage that I condense into a 15-20 minute video. But that’s not even up for debate here as they specifically stated that “someone else has been here so we’re good”. Meaning they didn’t feel it was necessary to touch the shortblock. Obviously opinions very, but I would have felt more secure leaving a completely stock bottom end untouched than to leave one that was put together by an unknown. It doesn’t take long to check clearances and bearing condition when the engines already on the stand.

The show then and now still have allot of cool info and how to's. Budget builds... there is no such thing. short cuts, shabby fixes, and cheap parts only turn a project into a garage queen that constantly needs repair... costing more in the long run than if you just save some bucks, and do it the right way.

This truck has a BBC, it is going to be expensive no matter what your budget is. but this is about 150-200hp over stock and will melt any tires this truck will have and thats the price you pay if you want the Luxury of tire shredding torque, Wanna go Cheap than you better get a S10 with a 4.3 V6. and keep it stock.

    • @k.r.v.4219
      @k.r.v.4219 Před 4 lety +2

      Robert Hawxhurst oh yea the last year produced had the 4 speed automatic, along with a retooling of the 454 engine, that brought the specs back to a more accurate fitting. That also brought a hp increase to 255 hp! It also helped with mileage about as much as 15%. I remember all this as I was ordering a new C1500 in 1993, after I drove a couple of different truck with different levels of trim. It was eight a basic K15004x4, or higher level called Silverado at the time C1500. The 454 SS I drove was amazing, but burned an 1/8th tank on a test drive? Plus on the highway felt like it needed a higher gear, seeing as how the three speed an 3:73 gearing in the 3/4 ton rear axle was to low for performance only. The newer year models were released for order, that came with an $800 increase in price, due to the new overdrive 4 speed HD automatic! But the gas mileage still concerned me. I ended up buying a C1500, Reg Cab optioned with the Silverado Sport Package that included the same chrome wheels and Bucket Seat Interior as the 454SS. But I ordered the 5.7 V8, with a 5 speed stick, that I was able to get a 4:10 Posi. That I used for daily commuting and transportation, along with towing show cars for me an others. After I changed the intake and exhaust manifolds and Holley Projection System, I was able to outrun and 454SS and get 20 mpg at the speed limits at that time of 55!

    We learned from several builds that when you build up the old 396's, and 454 big blocks to the point they are badasses, they will tear themselves apart. Keeping the compression down and running the roller tappets will help them not bend the push rods however, they will still find a way to bend or break. They love to spin lower bearings.
    If you can afford to go through these engines every couple of runs they are very powerful.
    I had a friend who did a full build on a cowl inducted 454 Chevelle. It was scary fast however, on one run I was with him we were at 95 mph and quickly heading upward when we saw the harmonic balancer in front of us and pulling away. This guy was meticulous and swore he had keyed it. I believed him as this was the fourth attempt at one of these big blocks.
