Banksy’s Shredded Painting to Be Auctioned for $5.5 Million

- Banksy’s now infamous shredded work of art is going up for auction again. In 2018, the elusive artist stunned a room full of people at Sotheby’s when he shredded ‘Girl With Balloon’ as soon as the gavel came down. It sold for $1.4 million. Since then, the piece has been renamed ‘Love is in the Bin’ and it could be worth as much as $8.3 million according to Sotheby’s. Inside Edition Digital’s Mara Montalbano has more.
I love how Banksy decided to troll people and it’s going to be bidded on for an insane amount
It wasnt a troll. They knew it would be worth more.

*Buh duh pssh

Someone definitely needs to quote this comment for safekeeping.
They dont sell the art itself, they sell concept
Confusing stonks
They have too much money
It's about money laundering
It’s funny seeing all the rich people freak out. That was quite a prank, but he definitely knew what he was doing because it increased the value.
@Kush Patel that sucks even more wtf
He hates his art being sold like this actually. Hence the shredder to leave a message.
It was supposed to shred the entire thing though it malfunctioned.
Actually it wasn’t meant to increase value. His manager or wherever it was stole his work to sell, he doesn’t actually like selling his work in auctions like this. That’s why it was shredded.
They don’t want pay their taxes
Doesn’t banksy hate that people sell his art? Isn’t that why he installed the shredder? I think the whole painting was supposed to be shredded but it didn’t go all the way through.
Nah he left it halfway because he knew the value would soar even higher and it did, and this time who knows the next auction he might shred the whole thing his last stunt maybe?
I don’t think anybody puts their heart and soul into something for it to be valueless lol
It’s like saying “let’s let this million dollar product just be”
Do you hear yourself
@@Emz1738. idk I always heard it malfunctioned
@@stopcommentingshit he could draw a smiley face and it’d be worth a million dollars I don’t think he’s concerned about that
He did intend for it to be entirely shredded, and the shredder did in fact malfunction, there was a video that showed how he even made the shredder. He does hate having his art sold at auctions, it's not that he sees his art as "valueless" it's that he thinks that art's value shouldn't be the dollar bill. From what I have read up on him and learned at art school was that he has more of an issue with the capitalism in the art world. It's an issue as a lot of people now value the dollar worth and status of artwork more than the actual artwork itself. Example: rich people who want to own a Picasso because it's a "Picasso", not because they actually like the piece or the artist.
The most incredible and stupid thing is how much value people give to material stuff 🤦♂️🤷♂️

@@DoDo-lr7xf money to shred *
He figured if it was shredded no one would want it.
Since it did t finish being shredded, he made it more valuable and gave it another chance at being sold.
@@auntiem873 No one would think the original artist shredding a piece would make it unsellable. You would see the people in that room were shocked but excited and the auction house scrambled to get it down and protected. The whole thing was a stunt and a well played one his audience knows it and eats it up.
He did a social experiment a few years ago in NYC by pretending to be a central park art seller (where you can buy a lot of touristy art prints or paintings for under $100) and sold only a few of his original paintings that day for like $40 each. Really just exposed the art world… that art is only “worth” something if it’s hyped up. It was also similar to the reason he chose to have this painting set to destroy itself after being sold at an auction: basically the middle finger to the person coughing up like 20million for it (the price of the piece before it was shredded)
Well, now they're giving him the middle finger right back and saying, "Jokes on you. We're still selling it."
That's the point, ANY form of art is worth only the value we give it, be it paintings or music
painting with girl and a balloon is worth 20 million? why? that painting seems so generic
@@EOh-ew2qf no, he's wrong it says right in the video it was sold for 1.4 million before it was shredded

@@ItsDaOneMac Well, we'll have to agree to disagree. Banksy had a 15 year career before the baloon shredding that included dozens of giant public exhibits that garnered world wide attention which is exactly why the balloon auction sold for such a high price. Banksy is an amazing artist. Art class sure taught me many types of modern day artists out there and his work caught my attention since no one has a clue on what he really looks like in real-life.
I agree wholeheartedly with you, @twist58, his work shines a light on very important social and environmental issues by using comedy and parody to make us all look ridiculous. The best part about all of his works is that he gets the so-called serious art 'experts' and 'collectors' scrambling for his original works and they're all too stupid to realise that he's taking the p*ss out of all of them, doesn't he?
Your comment about him remaining anonymous throughout his entire career is quite valid in that it only adds to his mystique and the value of any of his works when they come up for auction, doesn't it? As my late mother used to say here in England ".....some people have more money than sense, don't they? " and Banksy manages to prove her right on every occasion when his works come up for sale, doesn't he?
By the way, the only thing that even we Brits know about him is that he's originally from Bristol and that's about it....as far as I'm concerned he's a National Treasure and long may he continue to produce such vicious pieces of anti-establishment works and at the same time bleed those idiots dry of all of their excessive wealth. :-)

It’s not all about the skill. That obviously caps at some point. Most of the paintings value comes from being made by a world famous artist and going viral on major news networks after the shredding.
It really is just about *doing it* --- Banksy prbly thought the same thing as you at one point... "I can do that art, that's easy" --- difference is, he went out and did it... Also gotta have a combo of talent and luck... But the more you do something, the luckier you tend to get
You need reputation dude, if putin draw something I'm sure its also gonna be expensive regardless how its look.
Commonsense, this was not a surprise to the art gallery. First, who gave them the artwork to sell? It didn't just appear at their doorstep. 2nd, Bansky installed a shredder, and you really think the art gallery didn't inspect the frame and art piece? They have professionals for just this. To prove authenticity. 3rd, as soon as it sold they panned over to the piece? They knew this was going to happen. It was staged, and Bansky gets paid for this shock factor. But it's worth more if he is anonymous, so he protects revealing his identity. This is his artwork and it cant sell unless he authorizes the sell of it. On a building or property its a different story because it's someone else's property so technically he gifted it to them as they can sell it after. But this belongs to him unless he gifts it or sells it.
Maybe you should read up on Banksy. The man is anti-capitalist. He had one of his men managing a street booth, selling his artwork at $60. Very few pieces sold because the artist was never mentioned. Banksy is disillusioned with the warped valuations that the free market assigns to his artwork.
This is truly this centuries artist. In the times where popularity, attraction, curiosity heavily outweighs the art itself.
The funniest thing is that Banksy was most likely in the auction room lmao that's high level trolling
