- This video shows almost everything with a big build like this and that's why its so long. The first 85% takes about a week and then the last 15% seems to take forever. They need the main platforms up as the machine arrives but hold off on the handrails until they get the other machinery up on the platforms. Then its handrails, a catwalk in between the two platforms and then sometimes stairs. A big thank you to Mike Howe for helping me out with the onsite install!!
I used .o45 dualshield for all the heavy welding but then i swap over to the mp210 with .o25 hardwire for the handrail material.
Another great build 👊🏻👊🏻
weldingtipsandtricks thank you!
I always enjoy watching your work JD. 👍
RetroWeld thanks Douglas!
THANKs JD for uploading that video. Watching you build these great mezzanines reminds me that welding bead after bead on a plate of steel right now in school is actually teaching me a trade that can make me money some day.
Jack Stanger nice! Keep it up!
Great build JD! You have a lot of skill going into a project like this. Thanks for sharing!
Reid Eichner thank you!
Watched the whole thing. Amazed by your craftsmanship.
I have seen and heard everything now. Ironworkers working to Ode Of Joy. I can die now knowing there is nothing else left in the universe.
great build! though that looks like it was a lot of work. quick tip: karate chops save a ton on cut off wheels. ;)
This Old Tony you must teach me your ways of metal work!!! I really need the hand plane for sizing material and flush cutting welds!
I dont want to be a critic but why dont You use a big angle grinder 230 mm for cutting rectangular tubes ? It goes verry fast and with practice verry precise. I bet you have 230 V supply in your shop so if in US such equipment isnt on shelf order over seas ,check out bosch profesional JH range. Oh and love the vids, You provide secrets of the trade that are more than useful
Alexandru Alanei I like the 150mm size the best... idk why..... thanks!
in europe we use only 230mm, the small 125mm is for flap disc 's....
@@landcruisertoy9667 , strictly speaking in Europe we use 115 mm AND 125 mm, AND 150 mm, AND 180 mm, AND 230 mm discs for hand-held angle grinders (that would be approx. 4.5", 5", 6", 7" and 9"). Granted, some sizes are more popular than others - for instance, 115 is kinda relegated into hobbyists market, and the "regular size" is 125 mm. 150 mm is kinda rarity (I happen to own one, and getting discs is pain in the butt). Then there's 180 mm and 230 mm discs/ grinders - in my opinion grinders for 180 mm discs are not that much smaller than ones for 230 mm discs, so again, as in 115 vs 125 case, 230 mm discs wins (in terms od popularity) .
BUT! - that 230 mm is unwieldy beast, and unless you have hands like gorilla or wrestler it is hard to use. And when you accidently kink the disc and it jams - then sprained wrist is like a grace of Lord (or the fate for the m non-believers - people got killed by shrapnels from fragmented 230 mm discs). So unless you really need that deep cut (or far reach), the smaller grinder, one that is "just big enough" is beter solution. And to cut that 10 mm / ⅜ " (or so) of that tubing walls 150 mm disc is more than enough. Heck, you could cut them even with 115 mm discs, albeit much slower (grinder power rating issue), and you'd use many more discs.
By far the 125 mm is the most common - no, wait, it is THE most common size used - and not only for flap discs. You have thin, medium and thick cut-off wheels (from 1 mm to 3,5 mm), thicker side-grinding discs (typically 5 and 8 mm thick), diamond discc (all kind of them), some speciality discs for removing mill scale, for removing rust and loose paint ("octopus" discs), fibre sanding discs (used with rubber backing plate) for quick wood sanding, all kind of wire brushes, and so on - you name it. (There are even sponge discs for polishing car body - only to be used with grinders with regulated speed, of course).
What does make me wonder here though, is why not use plasma cutter? It would do the job in a fraction of time, and much cheaper. And quieter - and NOT breathing in all that dust from desintegrating discs is also beneficial to one's health. (Yeah, yeah, I know - respiratory track protection gears - everybody LOVES them, they make breathing so much easier, and that added overall convenience and work comfort... Yes, I agree 167% here...)
The dross formation in plasma cutting is minimal, quick lick with a small grinder would take care of it (or even just few blows with a light hammmer - those things are going to be welded either by stick or dual shield anyway, so I see no problem here).
Damn!!! Your accurate with that cutting wheel.
Ron Shekelson surgical.
He does it every time. I'm so jealous. My cuts are always crooked. So happy I have the bandsaw to help me out. :-D
Turned out great, nicely done!
David DeMoise thanks buddy!!
this is MEZZmerizing! one day I'll have a shop like yours!.
Brendan G thanks! Go for it
Awesome job as always. Keep them coming man.
Moto Z thank you!
Thanks for no cheesy intro garbage. Just right to cutting. Fantastic.
You now have one more subscriber. I'm just learning how to weld. I'm not sure why you only have 9700 subs.
AR556NATO thanks
Excelent video, awesome gob, fantastic music; greatings from Uruguay.
apcom instalaciones y servicios thank you!!
JD only one thing comes to mind and one word as always. ....
... LEGEND....🖒💪🤘👊
James White I beg to differ, but thanks!!!
Man who is that extremely helpful and extremely good looking fellow?
mike howe thanks for all the help, Mike!
JD Brewer lol no problem Sir
Never seen one of those flange wizards before for when you marked out those beams, despratly want one now because I am a structural steel fabricator welder and can't think of a handier tool, now time to save the pennies to buy one and get it shipped to Scotland. Loved the vid, keep it up
Martyn it is useful, thanks!
JD I like the music. Beethoven's 9th. It fits a man working steel for a living!
JC S thanks
You're killing it
Amazing metal work and Music!!
Carlos Servidio thank you!
great music, amazing build, tremendous skill!
milbert thanks alot!!
Amazing torch work.
Everythingisgoingtobealright thank you
That 6” Metabo grinder with the cut off wheel is my weapon of choice for many things also, like the square tube columns. I’m always asked why don’t you use the saw or the torch, I can only say that it is so much faster with the grinder. Another great build, they can’t say that it’s not up to code, I think if the building blew away, your mezzanine would still be there. Love the square tube hand rail too, so much easier to work with. Good job fellas!
Michael Albro yep, that's exactly how I feel too. I'm lazy and it's easy
Great, great choice of music!!!!! And good job too
Gustavo Menezes thank you!
I Love my Ellis horizontal bandsaw. Perfect miters without moving stock and no cut off blade stink.
That flange wizard tool is awesome, i never knew they made such a thing!
Awesome Video.
Michael Ellis thanks!
These time lapse videos are great, awesome watching you work a big project from start to finish!
Ben Krynski thanks!!
I admire the fact you can run your business so efficiently. I'm thinking about taking on some paying work with my everlast welder and powerplasma cutter.
Another Neverlast Spam.
Nice build
Simon Alkalay thanks
thank u so so much to your video...im learning more...mwaaaaa..and im enjoying listening while watching....the best...
I'm really feeling the music
I’m very disappointed. I didn’t see any fireball squares being used. LOL Great work.
wayfastwhitie455 Haha! I know, right........ so I did this last year right before I got the squares at fabtech. I've been sitting on this video for awhile. I have another one come g up and can't wait to build it with the squares!!!
As Jody calls them "heavy hitters" are chiming in on this video. Great to see the WTT community that I hear on the podcasts are the ones on the videos as well. Jody, when are you going to get This Old Tony on the podcast?
Robert Palmore thanks alot, really appreciate it....... Tony should definitely be on the podcast, he definitely knows metal and welding!!
Thank you JD. I'm jealous of your gantry crane shop. Looks like you've really learned to use it like a third hand. I have some cranes and use them similarly but still not as fun as a gantry in the shop. Cheers.
Good job
Giuseppe Peluso thanks
The "works" of a master, oh yeah the music is good.
Carlos Morales thanks
Duuuude this was epic
Chris White thanks!!
One of the rare examples on CZcams, when it cuts normally. sparks from themselves.
not on yourself and your clothes - how to cut all * great welders * in CZcams.))))
good job.
svarnoi69 thanks!
Nice to hear some music other than Gangsta Rap so many videos seem to have. Like that flange wizard!
Surprised you guys didn’t make the hand rails up ahead of time, nice work
Kevin smith they ask to install the equipment before I put the hand rails up, makes it alot easier.
Badass brother
Sonny sparks thanks!!
Good music choice
love the music!
I love this, what is it though?
Sweet 👍🏻
Luke Podmore thanks
very nice ,,
krazziee2000 thanks
Fantástico!!!
Douglas Santos thanks!
Great work jd! I want to start my own business like this. Where did you aquire the laws for owning your own fab shop.?
I like the video...like the music....you don't often hear Beethoven on a construction build......wondering why you don't use a plasma cutter for chopping up those I-beams?
Nice
Another great video JD and the job came our great. What were you using for for wire in the shop for fabricating? Dual shield ? what gas? who makes the wire? Part #? or spray? if spray what gas were you using? wire part #? The welds were flawless.
Gallagher Metal Works I was trying a few different wires but liked the dual shield the best. 75/25
Thanks JD
Nice build, JD! At 10:35, what caused theses little grooves right along the the center of the weld?
That flange wizard is brilliant. Why would you not plasma cut the I-beams. Man that overhead crane is invaluable. Must get one of those in my next life.
G Kuljian didn't have the air hooked up inside the shop yet for the plasma
You sure did a hell of a cut considering. I built a mezzanine once, and welded my column floor plates on like the floor was flat, and it wasn't. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Nothing like making good assumptions and getting bit.
Hey JD very impressed by the skill, but do you have much kick back from using the grinder that way? Sparks shoot away from you but most grinder accidents and near misses I've seen have been using it that way. Is the Motabo different, or is it a superhuman grip?
Ramses Torres - LFVN the metabo is different... they have a great video on their website demonstrating how their grinders have a clutch to keep from kicking back. I actually have a very relaxed grip... I only "steer" the metabo and let the grinder do the work.
Saw the video. Excellent safety feature. Could you however, maybe along with Jody, clear up to subscribers that not all grinders have this safety clutch? Thanks fro the great vids.
Do you generally gets plans provided to you or is it designed based on your experience?
Lewis Renovation no official plans, just guidelines really.
Thanks, btw, i stole the idea of using classical music from you on my videos. Take care.
At 10:36 your gas shield weld has some worm tracks. My students and I get them sometimes too. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I’ve read a lot of different fixes, but no real cause/ solution yet. Thank you.
What size is your C25 bottle? The one inside the home Depot bucket.
WoW
is the Heisenberg lab?
What size beams are you using? How much span?
Hey mate, how did you build those saw horses? plz do a vid! they look sweeeet
jack schlunke I am planning on It!
Yessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
Fantastic work! Approximately what was the total time on this job?
Mark Breidenbaugh around 3 weeks
Great video but you killed it with the music. Lol. Just curious why fabricate the railings on the job site why not at your shop ?
Tito Pagan they like to install the equipment before I put the hand rails up
Tito Pagan and time
Do you have or want to buy a horizontal bandsaw? Or do you just prefer cutting with a grinder?
I knew I wrote too soon. I see it in the middle of the video. Too small for those pieces maybe?
Theball Player some things are easier to cut in place with a grinder and other things cut better in the saw.
New to fabricating and dont mean this in a condescending way. Why do you cut the beams with a power tool then cut it with the torches?
How do you plan for an uneven floor at location since you weldiedthe bottoms flanges at the shop?
JC S I don't plan for it... I just make it all the same and install. Everything works itself out over 20'
I would imagine you write off all the cutting discs you run through in a year on your taxes, yes? The count must be up there in the high numbers. Thanks for the video. Just a thought, but maybe you could include some shop sounds from time to time, if it's not too much trouble. Thanks.
Duncan MacKenzie I would but I record in time lapse and there isn't sound
I see the saw horses that I want to make.
JD, do you have a link to the hinge? The rest of it looks its out of 2" square tubing?
Thanks Nick
Nick Williams I am planning on doing a video on them as well..... I got the hinge from McMaster carr.... they have an awesome mobile app. And yes it was just 2" tubing
I was eyeing those too. I'd love to see a video of them
MAB Machine working on it!
Did you weld the flooring together, to the sides, or just let it float?
JC S it floats mainly and a few screws here and there
Ok thanks!
Nice tool for scribing 👌
Peter de Vries thanks
So what cut off wheels do you like the best?
jj1479 metabo slicer plus has been the best performance/price ratio...... I'm trying out the Walter discs now. They are better but more expensive so testing to see if it's worth the cost.
With an orchestra being played while working, who would not wear an ear muff?
Top👍👍👍👍🏆
Do you listen to the same music while you work?
Mark Tracy yes, sometimes. But I am always listening to something.
the way he holds that grinder when cutting concerns me....that shit will mess you up keep it up and you'll respect it soon enough
john peters been like 10 years.... that grinder respects me.
Is this same place you took down a mezzanine?
Frank South yes, actually this install took place in between the last two removals.
🇧🇷
Looks like an extension to Walter Whites meth lab ;-)
second floor, disco floor, open for business. Party on Wayne :)
Chris R party on!!!
what was that on you beard?
Facundo Nuñez a hair net
Don't see the point in wearing beard nets, to keep hairs out of the factory's products, when you are creating all kinds of weld splatter and grinding dust!
minitici I was thinking the same thing. Grind, weld, drill but don't drop a hair?
Perhaps they needed the beard net if they left the area they were working in. The factory might have closed down an area for construction
Gd brewer what the name of symphony please
زين وناس الزبيدي Beethoven 9th
JD Brewer thank you brother
Time you bought a band saw
scaife fab did you watch the video? I was using one as well as a torch and grinder...
JD Brewer was meaning to cut the box and beams. Wouldent have thought it cost effective to cut with the slit discs or torch . Carnt you buy it in cut to size. Hear in the UK it's quit cheep to buy in cut to length
i enjoy these vids but the music sucks, id prefer just the noise of the work being done.
shaun hoblitzell I film in time lapse, there is no sound.
Seems like a 12" X 36" X 1/4" plate welded to the top of your saw-horses might be worth time and material expense as it would give you wider landing zone..... Just a thought. And thanks for showing your audience that this is true music that will long outlast Rap. But please don't divulge this was (Oh, my God!!!) - Opera!
Chip Friday I'll try that out
you should kill the music and just let the sound of the tools come through, Dirista style.
Iton Joans it's filmed in time lapse, so there is no noise.....
Good job. Very little pissing around. Let's watch the same job :self employed vs union.
D D thank you
WWJD
Ahh that music makes my ears hurt.
