Why Tottenham's Son Heung-min Deserves WAY More Respect

  • Many Tottenham fans feared the worst at the start of this season, but Ange Postecoglu's side have defied all the naysayers with a brilliant start to the season. But while the manager and new signing James Maddison have stolen the majority of the headlines, it's actually been Son Heung-min, appointed captain in the wake of Harry Kane, who deserves the most credit.

It's a bit unfair to say his form was bad last season. He was playing through an agonizing sports hernia he kept hidden. That's not a dip in form, that's a peak in legendary heroism and teamwork. What an utterly incredible human he is.

In the Spurs forums last year, many fans wanted to sell him as they believed Son was washed up and over the hills. Not caring to consider that he was often injured and Conte was playing him wrong. The same fan base called for benching him and cheered when it actually happened. I mean, come on! Son was the top scorer the previous year, and he is one of the most leathal finisher in the game when properly served the ball near the box, yet the stupid fan base would want to bench him. They would not know that it was the lousy defense and zero creative midfield that was the cause of his drop in production. 😂

Whenever I see anyone implying Son has it "easy" because he's the striker... or attempting to pass on the credit for his goals to others, I instantly have an understanding of how little the person knows about the sport. As much as the term "ball knowledge" is thrown around in banter, there really is a night-and-day difference in perspective between viewers who've got it and those who don't. If all you're noticing is Son's excellent finishing and points obtained, you're missing the other 90% of what he contributes to the match. Separately, also find it amusing that Kane had the same job and the glory rarely fell to the assist, whereas when Son scores, it's the assist that often gets more shine. It's as if people are afraid to acknowledge how essential he is. Perhaps because the man himself constantly undersells what he does. Excellent segment.

Not sure what data you are looking at. Just look at G+A (goals and assists) records WITHOUT PENALTIES for the last 5 or 6 years and compare it to other attackers in PL, Son has the most G+A in PL and should be considered the best in PL. This is the most objective comparison. Almost 30 percent of Kane and Salah's goals are penalties. When it comes to finishing, no one comes close to Son as the expected goal stats (xG) shows. And you can see the effects of his two footedness just in that second goal in the NLD.
In the 1 on 1 against Raya, he opens his body and Raya leans to his left thinking Son is about to hit hard with his left. Instead Son gently tucks it in with his right to the other corner, giving Raya no chance to even come close to it.
When you're legitimately two footer, defenders and keepers can't just guess which way you'll move. It means they'll always react a split second slower to any of his moves, which probably goes some way to explain why his number of goals has always been higher than his xG.

I read the comments on this video and as a fan of Sonny I hope he leaves this team. Not because I wanted Sonny to hold the trophy. I don't want him to leave for his career. I can't forget what the fans of this team did to Sonny last season. The team's famous fans, CZcamsrs and TV pundits all criticized, insulted, and ridiculed Sonny like crazy. They all cried out for the quick sell-off of all of them. To him, who stayed with the team until the end, playing his best, and even re-signing with the team in a bad situation, When Kane went to Florida because he wanted to leave this team. Think about it. Do you think you'd re-sign Tottenham under Nunu? Even Kane, who started as a Tottenham youth, walk out because he wanted to leave the team. Some fans may have criticized his poor performance last season because they didn't know he was injured. But by anyone's eyes Conte was using him in the wrong position and yet he scored a double-digit goal. He committed to the club enough to play with his hernia without having a recovery period after surgery for an orbital fracture. But with the exception of Sonny's fans, most of them criticized him as if he really killed him. Fans of other teams didn't understand their anger at selling Sonny right away. Not the other team fans and journalists to blame Sonny. It was Tottenham fans and officials who criticized Sonny enough to destroy him. I don't expect the fans of this team to be any different. Because they've always been. The team's fans have always suspected and never acknowledge Sonny's worth. They always took Sonny for granted. That's why I was able to criticize him for being sluggish for a while last season. It's a terrible, sad memory even when I think about it again. It was literally horrible... Still, Sonny loves this team so much. I'm well aware of that. So I want him to leave this team more. Because his dedication and love for his team will never be rewarded. I want him to play football where he properly recognizes Sonny's worth. I just want to see him play football happily without any worries. I hope Sonny doesn't go through the same thing last season again. So those who criticised him last year, please don't tell him to re-sign with this club again. It's your last conscience to just send him to a place where he can happily play football.
Maybe Sonny's fans appreciate your video because they know he's been through a tough time with this team without being recognized. But you told me through this video how well he played on this team while going through that hard time. So I also thank you. I just hope to see Sonny happily playing football for a long time

Could hardly keep myself up some days, and I have a fairly sedentary job. Tricky part of it is that on some days, it doesn't feel like you're injured at all. On other days, it's excruciating. The fact that Son was out there running and kicking for an entire season with the tears in his groin - the precise area you need to shoot properly - is absolutely insane. And I have a hunch on precisely what happened. Son was injured and needed surgery but the club/Conte needed him and couldn't afford to lose him for 3-4 months, so they offered him the option to play on, knowing his character and knowing he'd stay on. He tried doing the exact same when he broke his arm under Mourinho.
Also, an interesting anecdote. Not too long ago, I responded to a Spurs presenter's comment on social media (Nihal), asking why a player was allowed to play for 9+ months with such a painful injury, and why Spurs never made a proper statement owning up to it. Surprise, a few hours later and my comment was curiously hidden from public view lol. Quite displeased with the club's handling of this matter, but I'm glad Son got the surgery he needed and the captaincy he deserved. If he's able to move forward, so am I.

Solid video. Should have mentioned that Son had an injury all of last year that required surgery at the end of the season. It was painful to run and make cuts, so essentially the whole game he was in pain. Not to mention the orbital fracture and his World Cup duties as Korean captain (The is a gigantic pressure on Son during World Cup). Son, if he played centrally and took PK, would be one of the best strikers in PL history. It's incredible what he has been able to accomplish playing winger and not taking PKs. The man is a natural striker. Hope Tottenham smash the league this year.

He doesn't have a weak foot, his engine is insane and his finishing is unreal, so he can just pop up anywhere and be an absolute menace. Ange's system suits him so well.
It's no coincidence that we arguably saw the best version of Spurs under Poch when Son filled in for Kane injuries and we had Eriksen or Dele cresting. Now we have Son down the middle again with Maddison and others creating, we're probably seeing the best version of Spurs since that time.
On another note, i just love the man. Openly turned down Saudi money, said how much he loves the club, took on the captaincy and goes the extra mile to connect with the fans. He's a massive psrt of why the mood has shifted this season.

The thing with Son is that he has always flourished when playing centrally, as long as there was a creative force playing behind him. In the Champions League run, Kane was mostly injured and it was Son who scored many important goals leading up to Ajax. But that was when Spurs had Eriksen and Dele at their collective best. In his Golden Boot winning season, Kane and Kulusevski provided the creativity and much of Son's productivity came from central areas -- not the wide left that people believe is his position. Last season, Son was injured and Kulusevski was oft-injured and not at his best. This season, with Maddison and the "inverting" fullbacks, Son has the support he needs and he looks so much better in the middle than he does to the left (sorry Richy).
As an aside, Son really should have a hat trick with a (possible) winner in the second half -- Kulusevski fed Porro and Son had made an amazing run into the box, but Porro's cross was poor and deflected out for a corner. To me, that's where Spurs should have gone ahead.

The biggest and soooo heavily dismissed aspect of Son is his Leadership, positive energy, and personal care to his teammates, he brought to the "new" club , give it to the coach to maybe notice that in him to appoint him captain. But what he proceeds to do after freaking change the WHOLE club!! Players aren't fighting for themselves like majority professional athletes do, to get theirs... but rather Fighting selflessly to not disappoint his fellow brother in arms. Son lifts up supposedly fallen players like Richarlison and praises him when he succeeds probably wouldn't care if the roles were switched in terms of who starts. Teammates seems to be encouraging rather than pointing fingers at each other and sulking to themselves... after that OG by Romero, the goaly who shoulve been pissed... rather came to Romero and exchanged what seemed like up lifting words than screaming at him.
I can go on but maybe you should make a video on the new culture Son has brought to the club through his style of leadership. And it seems everyone's on board.

Son's finishing has been bonkers for many years now (let's forget about last year, carried an injury, Conte wanted to burn spurs to the ground, what can you do). I think at one stage a few years ago he was statistically the most clinical finisher in Europe (might even be pretty close this season). He's a really intelligent player, his runs are always really clever, and long may that continue.

The best analyst in the UK at the moment. I've always wanted to talk to people about how good Sonny is at putting forward pressure on his opponent when he doesn't own the ball. I've always wanted to talk to others about how he makes the ball flow as he intended with forward pressure. When you see him putting pressure on his opponents, you can see how outstanding his football intelligence is. His instant judgment and football intelligence during the game are amazing. His forward pressing was excellent in all games, but especially in the previous game against Burnley, his forward pressing ability really shined. And thank you for dealing with that part. As far as I know, you are the first person in England to deal with Sonny's forward pressure and football intelligence. I'm glad that I feel like I've shared what I always thought was one of his strengths with you. You're a smart, sharp analyst who knows how to see what people don't see. On top of that, it's even pleasant👏 I really like your analysis. I enjoyed the video🥰

I think an awful lot of people, myself included, underrated Son a bit because he was seen as Harry Kane's partner and they had this great linkage, but it partly concealed his own personal qualities. Now that he is leading the line and the team, it's a bit of an eye-opener, and he is already linking very effectively with James Maddison.

Sonny's first goal on Sunday was perfection. If he had blasted his shot I personally don't think he would have scored, but a gentle caressing of the ball allows it to pass through everybody. What a goal. And what thought process determines that decision in any event. He is a very special player

Honestly if you’ve been watching the last few years his off the ball positioning has improved drastically. I think his football IQ is now super underrated.
When he first joined Spurs he definitely wasn’t the best decision-maker, but this season he feels like just one of those guys in sunday league who just makes the right plays, the ultimate dad ball. You know the guys that just make one touch passes to free your teammates, the guys that make dummy runs to make it easier for the midfielders and the wingers around him. Except he can still make runs past the last line of defense when need be and still is one of the most clinical finishers in Europe.
He is not strong enough to be the best back to the goal no.9, but in a false nine kind of role between the lines when the opposition sits back and playing off the last defender when the opposition plays w a high line Son I think is gonna be amazing this season, could see him banging in 25 goals

  • @paulominster5077

To be fair he played with a sports hernia most of the year last season. On top of that he fractures his facial bone right before the World Cup, and played through the tournament. Two three years right before last season, anything he shot towards the goal went in. If he can stay healthy this season, and get back to his old self, he will be lethal.
His approach to football is like a religious devotion. He doesn't do anything that will distract him from playing his best football. He doesn't go out to party, he stays away from having relationships, and go out flaunting his new found wealth. He admitted his favorite pastime is to stay home, and play Fifa online.
Plus a new found responsibility of captaincy took this pious guy into the next gear. Not having a personal life will give him plenty of time to take care of his teammates as a captain of the team. He probably makes way too many calls, and texts to make sure everyone is doing well.
I could not ask for a better player, and captain to lead this team. Without playing the European cup, and the league cup they will definitely stay fresher compared to the competition. If they can stay without injuries, this team will go very deep, and have a very good chance to play Champions league next season.

WhenSon first signed for Spurs, I said to a mate who’s a Chelsea fan. Spurs just signed a player that’s going to light up the premier league. The day before Son signed for spurs he scored a hat trick for his country. No one knew who he was.
Years down the line it seem only spurs fans knew son’s class. Kane wouldn’t have scored so many goals if it wasn’t for son.
Now for the first time son is not in the shadow of Kane who got all the credit and limelight. Now your see how good son really is. An his only going to get better as the seasons go on.
It’s fantastic that four four two are the first to highlight son and how good he really is.
Son feels that he let they fans down last season, which he has said himself. He’s going to make a point this season. So take all those players loved by the news media and pundits, but I guarantee this real football fans in every club love him and would love him playing for their club over the players they have.
We are all watching a player we will talk about in years to come. It will be did you see that son play at…..

In the last season, he suffered from two major injuries. In addition, Conte's strategy required him to take more responsibility to back up for Wingback in the defense. Tottenham had Harry to score the goal but defense line was too weak so I think it was an inevitable choice. But this season, Tottenham has better defender like Van de ven and Udogie and Son just needs to focus on the creating chances and scoring as Harry did. Maybe his physicals is declining as he gets old but his skills and experience won't go away. Plus he's a great team players who always put team first before his own interests.

Yes, we know he is amazing but still doesn’t get the caliber of praise he deserves.

The British media used to talk about Harry Kame when they won, and now the media talk about Jannes Maddison when they win. Maddison here and Maddison there. And they only talk about Heung Min Son when they lose and blame him, e.g., vs. Fulham, in which he we was substituted and made the penalty. But when they win, the media don't even give him credit. Instead, it's all about Maddison.

At the end of last season we learned that Sonny was carrying an injury all of last season and avoided surgery so he could feature for South Korea at the Qatar World Cup.
At times at last season I was like WTF is up with this guy... Its like we were playing with 10 men whenever he was on the pitch. Made even worse by Conte tactics.
It made so much more sense that it was because he was injured which explained the drop off from the golden boot winner he'd been the previous season.
We've got our Sonny back this season. The guy's a Spurs legend.
Really looking forward to the rest of the season with Ange at the helm and the squad enjoying their football again. COYS

Thank you for showing us this impresive analysis. I'm just wondering how Son did it in the season before the last one. I bet he was great then. Last season seemed very special in the bad way to Son. Some people act like they completely forgot he was a golden boot winner, but it happened only a couple of seasons before and he was good, too, even before the season. He was genereally and consistently good. If i defend him, not only did he suffer injuries but also he was forced to play the wrong role in the position which is not the best for him at all because of the incomprehensible ball by Conte. Finally Son seems to be allowed to play in the position cut out for him. I really enjoy watching him play with his great teammates every week, expecting something great will happen again. Thank you for the interesting talk spotting Son's fantastic play once again.
