This song is already incredible, but the line "nuns in blue jeans" always makes me smile. My grandma was a working-class skilled laborer, after she left the convent. 💕
This is one of the most "honest" songs I have ever heard... "sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do and pray that people you love will catch up with you" -Mary Gauthier
me too...just tonight its midnight here in Canada bin listening to Mary, Ben Glover, and Anthony Toner, since after supper...bonus!! 😍💫👌...sing me to sleep Mary
Saw them last night in Rosendale , NY. Going to see them again tonight in Newburgh. One of the most amazing performances I've ever seen. Powerful. Beautiful. Each song so meaningful. She was introduced last night as "one of the greatest songwriters in America"
First saw in Bellowsfalls. Vt 1999 opening for Fred Eaglesmith in the Church(Meeting House) on Sunday morning and fell in love with her songs full of soul. heart and hope!!! Fell in Love with Mary too she signed my T-shirt and cd's !! Thank-You Mary for being who you are and sharing it with so many lucky souls! I felt blessed and still do by your inimitable voice in song(s)...You are a Wonder!!!
mary is just awsome and tania on that fiddle that was marvelous im british you americans your so lucky to have musicians like this hope you dont mind me listning to
Amazing that some has to judge you cause they are so perfect, but even though you are not the greatest singer in the world, your touch places few can with the sincerity of your conversation and in the long run it made me nothing...if not completely human. Thank you!
I just shut this song off..., because its my story... My brothers and sisters too.... I did what I had to do 2 nights ago and Mary is singing it to Me. Thats eves dropin Darlin, welcome to the show, and Happy Veterans Day
Had photo with her some time ago at WILLIE concert,in LIVERPOOL,UK.What a lovely warm person, I wish her every success. She is touring UK now Oct,2019,but I am unable to attend her concerts. I will inform a relative who lives in SCOTLAND, that she is appearing near him.Cheers to all,John,Liverpool, UK.
My dad mentioned Mary Gauthier. Saying that she writes her songs well and describes her story through them. He wasn't lying. I'm not a big fan of country music, but I don't mind this.
Love it so much!! Cant believe Im just finding your music now!! Some seriously giod writing .. " ... and pray that the people you love will catch up with you!" - ok. Im off to Drag Bingo with my daughter. Maybe. We'll rent a limousine! 😘
I hated high school, I prayed it would end The jocks and their girls, it was their world, I didn't fit in Mama said, "Baby, it's the best school that money can buy Hold your head up, be strong, c'mon Mary, try" I stole mama's car on a Sunday and left home for good Moved in with my friends in the city, in a bad neighborhood Charles was a dancer, he loved the ballet And Kimmy sold pot and read Kerouac and Hemingway Drag queens in limousines Nuns in blue jeans Dreamers with big dreams All took me in Charley and I flipped burgers to cover the rent And Bourbons at happy hour for .35 cents One day before work we got drunk and danced in the rain They fired us both, they said "Don't y'all come back here again" Drag queens in limousines Nuns in blue jeans Dreamers with big dreams All took me in My dad went to college, and he worked for the state He never quit nothing and he wanted me to graduate My brother and sister both play in the marching band They tell me they miss me, but I know they don't understand Sometimes you got do What you gotta do And hope that the people you love Will catch up with you Yeah, drag queens in limousines Nuns in blue jeans Dreamers with big dreams Poets and AWOL marines Actors and bar flys Writers with dark eyes Drunks that philosophize
It's odd. When I was young I was arrested at a sit-in at the South African embassy. We see how shining a bright light on a poor situation can help. I am not "intolerant" of your views Sir. I fought to guarantee that you are allowed them. Shining a light on them does not make anyone intolerant, just thoughtful. Semper Fie
I am in tears as I write this. She is not a songwriter, she is a poet, with an eye that sees the harshness, and a pen that renders it so beautiful..
It is poetry, and the way she sings it adds a lot.
Just heard "Mercy Now" on a TV show and the first verse had me teary eyed. Lol.
was it Yellowstone?@@crackerjackrappr
This song is already incredible, but the line "nuns in blue jeans" always makes me smile. My grandma was a working-class skilled laborer, after she left the convent. 💕
Awesome image...its great when a snippet of a song can resonate so deeply
",,and pray that the people you love will catch up with you." I'm sobbing into my bandana.
This is one of the most "honest" songs I have ever heard...
"sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do
and pray that people you love will catch up with you"
-Mary Gauthier
Michael O'Donnell AMEN

me too...just tonight its midnight here in Canada bin listening to Mary, Ben Glover, and Anthony Toner, since after supper...bonus!! 😍💫👌...sing me to sleep Mary
Awesome. First time hearing a female sing this. Wow ! Loved it. 👏
Basically,
The story of my life, and probably many of us that came of age in the sixties and seventies. Thank you, Mary.
Yes!!
Me too! (My high school was "the best money could buy", in the top 5 in the country. This song speaks to me and resonates!)
Mary Gauthier is an amazing talent!! She can tell her story SO well!!
Would love to see her in concert, she is Brilliant.
Story of survival behind this song... Love it...
wow, Mary takes us where we thought we just couldn't go.... deep, and thinking outside the box. .. more compassionate, and understanding. thanks Mary.

She’s a poet
Mary is just superb, so powerfully moving, tells it how it is, and Tania on violin is superb too, compliments Mary so well.

My dad mentioned Mary Gauthier. Saying that she writes her songs well and describes her story through them. He wasn't lying. I'm not a big fan of country music, but I don't mind this.
It's not so much Country to me but rather "Hurtin' Music".. the broken-hearted songwriters are always the best of the lot.. luv it.
Really love these middle years, because they always be great.
This Lady is a GREAT Artist !!!!!

You are amazing!

I hated high school, I prayed it would end
The jocks and their girls, it was their world, I didn't fit in
Mama said, "Baby, it's the best school that money can buy
Hold your head up, be strong, c'mon Mary, try"
I stole mama's car on a Sunday and left home for good
Moved in with my friends in the city, in a bad neighborhood
Charles was a dancer, he loved the ballet
And Kimmy sold pot and read Kerouac and Hemingway
Drag queens in limousines
Nuns in blue jeans
Dreamers with big dreams
All took me in
Charley and I flipped burgers to cover the rent
And Bourbons at happy hour for .35 cents
One day before work we got drunk and danced in the rain
They fired us both, they said
"Don't y'all come back here again"
Drag queens in limousines
Nuns in blue jeans
Dreamers with big dreams
All took me in
My dad went to college, and he worked for the state
He never quit nothing and he wanted me to graduate
My brother and sister both play in the marching band
They tell me they miss me, but I know they don't understand
Sometimes you got do
What you gotta do
And hope that the people you love
Will catch up with you
Yeah, drag queens in limousines
Nuns in blue jeans
Dreamers with big dreams
Poets and AWOL marines
Actors and bar flys
Writers with dark eyes
Drunks that philosophize
Thaks!
Amazing
my life too Mary
WOW! !! Fabulous!!!
