An overview and demonstration of the quirky and incredibly useful neutral finder lever on the Enfield bullet 4 speed gearbox. Unique to this motorbike and such a great idea.
Wow, that's amazing, I'm just getting a '65 G2 restored, and I was doing it all wrong until now. This video has ensured that I'll do it right from now on, thank you very much!
I HAVE BEEN RIDING THIS SAME OLD STD MODEL FOR 5 YRS NOW BUT NEVER KNEW THE TRICK ABOT USING YOUR HAND FOR PUTTING THE BIKE BACK IN NEUTRAL THATS AWESOME WILL TRY IT TODAY
I had a 350 bullet back in the 1950,s first one with the nacelle head light, I agree with you the neutral finder was helpful and so easy to use I do not know if all the gearboxes are easy but I used to change 3rd to 4th up and down without the clutch miss the old bike
It's a legendary piece of tech, imo, the Old Standard Bullet 350. Though it's pretty rugged compared to other bikes of its category, it stands out tall among them all in terms of convenient features like the neutral finder, slow lugging in high gear(15 kg crank) etc.
HI spidiq8 ! Thanks for sharing, we sadly miss this mechanism in new Unit Construction Engines. As a writer for the Royal Enfield Blogs we often love to share & view the stories of classy things they did in good old Royal Enfield and this is one of that contribution you made. Thanks !
Thankyou very much, i'm glad you enjoyed it. I do like the new model and the idea of it being easier for modern users to maintain but theres a certain charm to old pre unit construction engines and the fact that these are changed so little to the original build. They truly are a window to the past and a less hectic time, fingers crossed RE doesn't start changing the styling to be more modern and lose that old school charm, there'll always be a market for it as a lot of new bikes see to show.
I have 1985model bullet but it was little tough for me to make it neutral but after watching this video I feel so easy to make it neutral 😀😀. Thnx for uploading this video
Thanks for posting this video and I have a suggestion on shifting to neutral from 1st gear. The other way of neutralizing from the first gear is, put your heel on the neutral lever and simultaneously press gear lever down on your foot slightly, you'll feel slight shift. That's it, it is neutralized.
Excellent tip...never knew that the bolt that stopped the neutral finder could be used to tune it from now putting the bike into 2nd...my bike always goes into 2nd gear when I hit the lever...Thanks
As in struggling to find neutral I assume you mean? :) Hopefully this will help you then. Check out my other bullet videos for a few more tips and hints and useful bits on servicing and such. Enjoy your bike
Thank you! I had no idea what all those levers on the right side did! Just saw one and was confused as I have only ridden 'normal' bikes and a few Harley tank shifts.
Thanks for the comment. As long as you don't expect fast you'll enjoy it. They're easy to work on. I recommend getting a manual and joining the forum on the Hitchcocks website, lots of helpful guys on there. Also, make a list of bits you'll need then order a batch from ebay, india, I used a seller called Pummy something, if you search bullet spares you'll see his listings. about 1 to 2 weeks delivery time but dirt cheap, head and base gasket for £3.50 for example Hitchcocks are great and quick
No problem, If I can help with anything during your rebuild just send me a message and I'll do what I can, hope it all goes smoothly and you enjoy your bullet.
To get neutral from first gear, put your heel on the neutral finder and give the gear lever a prod with the ball of your foot. Sounds hard but is'nt and works every time. I love daft old motorbikes.
Yes, this is how the real bullet is.. Not like the kids edition RE bullets with low height and side stand and self start. Kicking itself will give such power and energy. Its tricky and little bit tough, so give this to the kids and some girls who likes kids edition RE bullets, they will try this and avoid it later :D
The inspection cover with the two screws on it? If you've dropped anything inside the gearbox it's a problem, if it's a tiny screw you MIGHT be OK for a little while as the bullet gearbox is lubricated with a grease/very thick oil but I would recommended you take it apart and retrieve it as soon as possible.
ThankX for explaning this wonderful feature & also this kind of feature in jawa yezdi 250 could U explain, I think the gear stick is the same stick used for kick plz explain all details, buy for now..
+Pankaj Borade You're welcome. Re the Jawa, unfortunately I can't give an explanation to the workings of it but again this is a great design, I have played with one years ago and you do indeed flip it back and use like a conventional kickstart lever then once running flip it forward and it operates your gear changes, I can only assume that it utilises a partial gear mechanism that engages a starter dog when moved backwards but disengages when forward.
? Which ones? I'm assuming you're talking about something much more recent possibly electrically or electronically operated? None of the Kawasaki's I've had ever had (pre 2000) a neutral finder. Also bear in mind this design is British 1950's
It’s totally mechanical Positive Neutral Finder on Kawasaki’s. Ball bearings on 2nd gear shaft to lock it when stationary so you hit neutral every time. Modern petrol Kawasaki’s 👍
@@Moto.roller. I think you need to elaborate more, do you simply mean the green neutral idiot light when neutral is selected because that's an entirely different thing.
That's an awesome feature you pointed out there. I own and ride a 2005 similar right footed gear motorcycle. I am customizing my bullet into a cafe very soon. So, i was wondering if there was a possibility to change the orientation of the gear lever. (not the neutral finder) I wanted to know if i could orient it in the opposite way using links. But, then the problem there is the kicker. I would highly appreciate suggestions on this regard.
To change down through the gears you move the shift lever with your toe to the opposite direction of changing up the gears. The neutral finder is specifically for going from any gear to neutral quickly.
Hi Sir, I. Recently restored my bro in law bullet and I am driving an old machine for the first time. While I shift gears, it is getting into neutral everytime in between. I will have to press hard twice to go from first to second. Same from second to third . Also, the neutral lever you demonstrated, that doesn't move always, i will have to manually come from fourth to neutral at a stop. Am I doing something wrong here or is my bike having any problem?
Most likely your gearbox would benefit from cleaning and re greasing. They aren't the smoothest to begin with. Another thing to check is the flex of the outer case when you actuate the clutch. Some are cast quite thin and flex considerably which means your clutch doesn't fully disengage. This can be addressed by rebuilding and adding spacers internally on the fasteners to help maintain the shape.
@@spidiq8 I will get that checked once the lockdown is over. Also, yesterday I filled almost 80% of tank with fuel and today when I started the engine in idle, the petrol was coming in continuous drops from carburetor bottom. I had to close the fuel On/Off knob to stop that. So, I just parked it.
That's not so. Depending on the space between gears there are often gaps where neither ratio is fully selected and these are referred to as 'false neutrals' there's only one true neutral position in a gearbox, false neutrals are a side effect of sequential boxes because a gear has to slide and fully disengage one before it engages another
If correctly adjusted you simply press it down with your foot while the clutch is disengaged and you're rolling and it will move the gear shift lever to neutral position.
divyansh bhojane its simple bhai sabse pehle fuel tank ke neeche tujhe ek neck milega usey poori tarah se left mein shift kar de fir kick ko dheere se poora neeche tak la to khatak karke awaz aaegi fir kick upar laake taakat se normal kick maar aur teri bullet el baar mein start ho jaaegi
Before you go for starting try lightly kicking the bike no less than 5 turns with the compression valve held open. Choke release compression valve and give it a good kick if it gets a small putt than turn off choke and try another kick it should start right up. If it does not try a touch (and I mean very small amount of gas) of throttle and try again. If not than give it full gas. If your machine is tuned it should have started by than. If not it will flood out if you make too many attempts to start. Hope this helps!
Before kicking keep the empire metre needle in the centre u have to look the metre while kicking down when the needle came the centre stop downing kicker some bullet need half lowering
Old Mucker Had a watch, sounds nice and healthy so that's a positive start, odds are the shonky lights will be related to the storage th as t gave it it's 'patina' :) I'd go through the wiring and check for bad earths and corrosion as well as the bulbs, but it can't be too bad if it starts and ticks over like that though.
Yes it does sound really nice even the oil is really clean, The patina is nice but got rid of some of it don't want to much :) but i do like a scruffy bike to be honest. I will have to check everything the oil must be ok of it would knock it's nuts off ? might even put oil pressure gauge on.
Old Mucker I wouldn't, you'll only worry yourself over the low pressure which is normal, you can fit a temp gauge by using an oven skewer thermometer through the oil filler cap which is more useful, just remember to glance at it when stopped, get yourself a few filters and have one pre soaking in some clean oil ready for an oil change then dump the old oil anyway and strip and lap in the oil pump surfaces, (see my video on how to), that'll make sure you're getting the best flow you can and most importantly getting it to the head and valve gear which is the hardest bit to reach.
Abhishek Abhi It's the opposite to standard Japanese which is left foot gear change push down for 1st then up for 2, 3, 4, 5 etc the bullet is right foot change, push up for 1st then down for 2 3 and 4, hopefully that makes sense?
Abhishek Abhi you can either kick the lever down from 1st or up from 2nd like you would on any bike or press the neutral finder lever from 2, 3 or 4 and it will move into neutral if the finder is correctly adjusted. It can be adjusted by means of the eccentric adjuster as per the video if needed.
This is one of the pre unit construction engined bikes which were built much the same as the original Redditch models. They were still being manufactured like this until quite recently until emissions laws prompted the update to the uce fi model

Useful video as I've just acquired one of these little machines and was just about to start dismantling things to get neutral light working!
Hope you enjoy it, they're refreshingly easy to work on.
You can weld a metal rod to the neutral finder (you wont need to use the heel anymore) and turn it by hand as well,
lowriderrookie Interesting idea, though when stationary you can reach down and set it by hand but a hand lever would be a good modification certainly.
I love this

Dear Friend..
Thank you for the info on the Albion GB could you or anyone else please tell me how often you would grease the box and how much, thank you.
I don't know what the recommended intervals are but being grease it doesn't get lost as easily as oil, it's just a matter of packing it with grease.
