Umm, ok?
Maybe the incorrect name for that kind of hobby tool but good for 0 rincles too!
Thanks for the in depth demonstration. I’ve had this camera for some years but recently found the shutter speed hard to set. Watching you handling it you either use a finger of each hand from the back or your two thumbs looking from the front. This is what I found best too. Gripping the speed dial between finger and thumb makes it too tight to turn. I’ve now subscribed so I can enjoy your very wide range of videos. Thanks
Thank you and yes I found the same. It feels much easier C more controllable using a finger of either hand. I hope you enjoy using it. Once you've gotten used to the zone focusing guesstimation these are amazing cameras. Thank you for the subscription and I hope you enjoy some of my other videos.
@@spidiq8 You would be doing the Rollei owners a huge favour by creating a video with the tight shutter speed dial problem in the title for searchers and demonstrating this method of overcoming it. Might save some inappropriate use of the dreaded Wd 40 ! I’ve recently bought a 35S which is great so was checking the 35B out before considering listing it for sale. Discovered that the B setting is not holding the shutter open on pressing the button so was looking round for a cure. If I can’t find one I’ll have a good reason for hanging on to it! Thanks again.
That dial is spectacular!
Absolutely fantastic video, thank you for sharing your knowledge. Definitely takes the mystery out of servicing these amazing little machines, and makes buying a used and abused one less of a risk. Just managed to get one for a song, and yes, all the seals are shot, but now I know what to do about it without spending mega-bucks having it serviced by someone else!
In the slow motion video I can see the balance swinging 360°, not 180°. Please educate me as I must be missing something 🤔
Certainly, you're missing that we calculate amplitude from drop and lock of the pallets on each rotation. While the balance wheel rotates a full 360 degrees that's halved because the pallets actuate with each directional rotation and the point where the impulse jewel interacts with the pallet fork is about halfway in that full rotation clockwise or anticlockwise. Hopefully that clarifies things. It's trickier to put into words than show visually.
I had this kit as a boy and it came with springs and levers to fire rockets….. that’s why the pods aren’t accurate 👍👍
I remember the early ones having the springs and levers. I think I mention it in the build somewhere. The overall design of those rockets was incorrect to the movie though.
This is so helpful! A while ago I bought a working Canon Demi S and was really enjoying shooting with it, but it actually jammed on me mid-roll. Judging by the description you gave of how your camera was broken when you got it, I think it might be a similar issue on mine where the shutter leaf blades were sticking together and need to be lubricated. My camera actually consistently had a problem where if the zone-focus was set to "slightly beyond infinity", the leaf shutters would jam open until the focus ring was moved. Which obviously lead to some funky pictures lol. But the shutter sticking is making me think that it just finally gave up and stuck closed. Question about the disassembly: Do you think it's possible to access the shutter leaf blades just by taking off the front lens element with lens without disassembling the body? From your teardown, it sounds like the only thing required to access that part is a lens spanner/wrench. I'd definitely prefer to do that instead of tearing down the whole camera, since this would be my first ever camera disassembly and I'm nervous about breaking things.
I believe you could yes but the important thing to remember is don't flood any solvent in there that can creep into areas it shouldn't be. Now I'm no camera expert and any decent tech would tell you the 'proper' way to do it would be a full strip and service of at least the shutter assembly but as a quick bodge you can try like this. My thinking was it was worth a chance given it wasn't too expensive.
I am working on fabricating a new date jumper spring but I don't seem to see one on this watch. Did I miss you remove it?
That's an excellent question and I honestly don't recall I'm sorry to tell you. It was so long since I did this and I've only ever had a couple in. Are there any tech/parts sheets on the group? Edited to say unless it has a built in spring like some Seiko parts then it must have one. I'll rewatch my video to see if it sparks any memories.
Okay, quick check of the rebuild video shows it about around 11 minutes. It's a fairly standard shepherd's crook style. czcams.com/video/PMopyo47qiE/video.htmlsi=mX2Q1cVsGcxp3Fnf

Hi, love your videos of repairing chronographs, what is the good price for the Hamilton x patrol, I don't want to overpay? Thanks 🙂
To buy or to have serviced?
@@spidiq8 to buy, but also how much is servicing for this watch? Thanks a lot
@@BokiPetrovic88 I believe new they were around £1200 and I'm not sure if this specific model is still available but there'll be something similar. Pre owned I would anticipate anywhere between £600 at the low end to perhaps £900 at the higher end. But you must take into account age as well as condition and if it's been serviced. If it's 8-10 years old and hasn't been serviced it will be due one to ensure there's not excess wear internally. A service will range between £300+ depending on the watchmaker.
@@spidiq8 ok great, thanks. I hope some new watchmaking videos coming, really enjoying your videos with explanation easy to understand. Thanks
@@BokiPetrovic88 Thank you. I hope to get some filmed soon when I start on my own projects as I've been so busy with others I've not had the time to film and edit much of anything.
I have just received a watch saying that it has a PT5000. In the video I was waiting to see you wind the movement and hear how grittiness and difficulty in winding. The winding feels like it will break a gear by the difficulty so I wind by using the rotor which does not sound to be rotating freely. Do you have this experience or is my example just a poorly put together and lubricated movement?
There is no grittiness and it winds smoothly. I'm currently wearing this exact watch just now and it gets a lot of regular wear.
Thanks so much. I tried and tried, then searched CZcams. You saved me hours of frustration trying to get these air inlet rubber boot installed 😃
Glad I could help. They're horrific aren't they, whoever designed that really hated people in general I think. 🤣
PT5000 i s a crap movement !!! I have 4 watches with the PT5000 movement and all of them have broken; none have lasted more than a year. I can only conclude that it's pure Chinese junk. I have a Pagani Design with the NH35 that has been working perfectly for 7 years.
What brands names are the watches that the PT5000 have failed on, just out of curiosity?
@@nickjohnson217 Proxima and Cronos
The environment where the watches are cased and the storage of the movements beforehand are the main contributors to early failure or poor running. Even a cheap nasty DG2813 cleaned and lubricated will run reasonably well for a long time. Most of these factories are buying movements in bulk with the most basic assembly and lubrication and the same applies to NH35's, they simply have more 'leeway' in their assembly than the ETA2824-2 this is based on and that's why they're less accurate but they can fail just as easily. Frankly when you pay between £80 and £150 for a watch you cannot expect careful assembly in a sterile environment. It's the equivalent of 'I have a mate that can do it cheaper'.
Can leak from under end of roof rail channel
I guess it is the same to fold them back again... I will find out.

I'm not taking on any more work currently, i'm in the process of clearing my workload of customer watches and trying to get to some of my own projects and filming for youtube but thanks for the enquiry
Great video. I love watching the shutter in slow-motion. My daughter and I have this particular model (the Super B) and the one that once belonged to Lady Rose Talbot is on display here at Malahide castle. Daugter's works so far, mine looks great and has a clear lens but the mechanism is gummed up, possibly with a stuck self timer. Your video is the nearest I've seen to a teardown tutorial but I'll search for a more experienced repairperson before I have a go at it.
That's interesting, thanks. Unfortunately i'm not a camera repair person, just beginning to tinker internally with them though many mechanical time parts are similar to watch movements i'm finding, just larger and less susceptible to dirt stopping play. You might be able to find a service guide for the camera but if in any doubt i'd look for a camera tech who is familiar with this model of camera. I'd like to get this one working again but it's not high on the list due to the lens not being he best and numerous other waiting projects.
Absolute hero, thank you!
Crap-I thought you were actually gonna show us how to make something. Coulda summed up this video with- if you need a video to figure this out, just buy a ready made hose clamp

Hello can I replace the cattin c66 movement of my Mortima 28 Superdatomatic Skin Diver with another more precise model? thanks
The anser to this is always, 'maybe'. Is there a direct replacement drop in? No, the only exception to this rule so far is the Seiko NHXX series which will replace the 7S26 movement.
Awesome video mate! San Martin really offers fantastic quality at an affordable price! Do you know if the crown tube is replaceable by the way? Or is it an actual part of the case?
The crown tubes are always a replaceable part if they're a screw down crown, depending on the case it will either be screwed in place or press fit, either way you need a suitable tool and very likely heat, to remove and thread lock to replace with a new one if you can find a replacement part, this in the main problem with chinese cases etc. often it's cheaper to buy a whole new case from aliexpress or similar.
@@spidiq8 Thank you so much for this insightful response! I've had contact with various brands about replacing crown tubes and a lot of them told me it wasn't possible to replace them as they were an actual part of the case. They don't want you to take their watches to your local watchmaker I guess.. Thanks again for your reply, really appreciate it!
how to format card without uninstalling magic lantern
Format in camera. It'll give the option to format without deleting ML or to hit the trash button to format and delete ML. Just use the first option and don't hit the trash button, card will format as normal and the camera will restart.
Thanks for testing the PT5000. I’m a big fan of ETA 2824/2892 and SW200 clone. Glad to see the 2824 Chinese clone looks promising !

Sorry, another query, Ive only ever dis and tried to re assemble a Smiths Empire pocket watch and tinkered and broken an old Timex m24 movement. I know they are difficult to work on and the Timex isnt for taking apart fully, anyway they both shattered my confidence and havent attempted another dis/re assembly. What movement would you recommend for a 1st dis/reassembly? Are these better swiss designed movements easier to work on? If I cant put the Smiths pocket watch back together do you think I dont have the eyes and hands for this work :). I do have basic tools, loupes , screw drivers, etc. Thx again spidy
I also did 2 years .mechanical/electrical engineering and really love this subject and want to get into it more.
For a first one to build confidence I recommend a brand new Seagull ST36 or the ETA6497/8 it's a copy of. Starting with a brand new one will tell you if you've rebuilt and lubricated it well as it will already run so you're not trying to diagnose faults from scratch. These movements were pocket watch movements before wristwatch and are a stalwart of the watch industry, they're as simple as they get and the size is great for handling a practice, most students begin on this. Things like the Seiko 7S26 / NH35 etc are ok but they have some specific Seiko foibles so i'd suggest those if you primarily intend to work on Seiko for mods etc. After you've mastered the ST you can move to one of the ETA auto copies such as the PT5000, the beauty of the chinese clones is that they're legal exact copies, (due to patent expiry) and they affordable.
Brilliant! Thank you!
Hi again :). I bought this Addie Ex homage with the Pt5000 also. Thanks to you're videos I opened and regulated it. It was performing similar to yours. Now it gains half a sec a day :). Im gonna attempt to get that speck of lume off the addie 2028 this week. Thank to these videos, thank you sir. Very helpful. Please, did you find the pt5000 to be lubricated well enough for longterm, everyday wearing on wrist, or do you feel it has inadequate lubrication? Thx again spidiq8.
did the lube in main spring barrel fix the gritty winding?
My particular one, (because i'm picky possibly) I would say was inadequate in the lubrication accuracy and amount, some slightly messy application. I don't know if that's common but as is i'd have expected to see timing variations after about a year but I would expect it to still be running. Because these are produced more cheaply than the Swiss counterparts there'll be corners cut re the cleanliness of assembly lines and whether the lubrication is automated or manual. A well calibrated auto oiling line will have more accuracy than manual. Think monday morning enthusiasm to friday afternoon quality in a factory environment. I've disassembled cheap DG movements before for fun and found them bone dry from brand new, they're the type you used to find in old fake watches and they'd run for maybe a couple of months.
Yes it did, the grating was from the bridle slipping with inadequate application of braking grease.
Nice one spidiq8 :)
How much do you charge for service of this watch
Thanks for the enquiry, i'm not taking on any watch service or repair work currently as i'm trying to clear my current workload.
