    Alternator just went out on my 1984 GL1200 Standard. Great video! Clear and very instructive. Hooptie you're a great instructor and an amazing mechanic. I can't do a project like this but hate to sell my Big Girl as a project bike. Keep wrenching!

    Really like this video and appreciate all the work you did to make it.
    I have two comments regarding the alternator.
    1. With the old stator it could clearly be seen that the cables from the stator came out underneath. When you put on the new stator the wires where shown on top. I really wonder how you managed to get the rotor over it on reassembly.
    2. From what I have heard one of the reasons that the stator gets fried is the connection between the alternator and the rectifier/regulator. I understand that over the years one or more of the connector pins may corrode leading to an imbalance of the currents thru the stator. Some folks recommend cutting both connectors of and solder the leads together directly with some heat shrink tubing over it. That could be the reason why the old stator didn't have a plug attached.

    I like the video but unless u need to change the clutch pack you don't have to take it out the whole rear housing will come off just saves a little time

    Great work man. Nice attention to details as well, measuring clutch disk and spring tolerances would be something most would easily neglect, well done. Nice to see someone following the measurements. Looks like we have similar content channels. All the best!

    12.22.19. The Stator you installed was probably wound as a Delta, instead of Wye wound, thus slightly higher current output. A fresh Stator will put out around 70vac @3000 rpm between any two of the 3 phases. ( 1-2. 1-3. 2-3. ) ....... Wye wound.

    These vids are an excellent resource for these bikes. I have a very small oil leak from that back part of the case but since I'm lazy I just used some rtv for the moment. This engine really makes me appreciate v twins and thumpers. These 4 bangers are smooth but so complex to service and get at all the bits. Most of the work i did on a 74 CB 550 I did with the engine in the frame

    Fortunately on the 1200 you leave the clutch in and just pull the housing. I couldn’t help but notice you put the stator in backwards at first.. hopefully you turned it around.

    Excellent video. Clear, to the point, no (terribly) distracting music. I imagine I could do that work myself, if I could only manage to get that big lump on an engine out of the frame!

    did the stator end coming out of the case wiggle at all? Just did mine and there's a little play in it. It's seated all the way

      Glad to hear you like the videos. I was wondering when someone would notice the playlist :) Those are videos I've finished, but haven't published yet. Basically, I put out two videos per week in the build series (Tues/Fri) and at the moment I am ahead on filming, so for example, the video that comes out this Tuesday was actually filmed a couple weeks ago. The entire Goldwing build series will have more than 50 videos. Don't know how much more, but more. Thanks for watching and for the comment. It's interesting to hear how you found the channel.     Is there anyway to change the alternator without taking the engine out? I'm about to buy this bike and it has a bad alternator and I'm just trying to figure out if I should flip it or put the money in to fix it and keep it?

      This is one of those scenarios where the quickest (not easiest😀) way of getting things done is to remove the engine. The cover for the alternator is the same cover for the output shaft from the transmission that goes to the rear wheel and, the physics of that setup make engine removal necessary. Sorry for the bad news

    Dude, those alternator conections are what kill the alternator. It is very common to rid the bike of the connector and solder the wires directly. You are basicly doing all that alternator work for naught.

    The starter clutches are really bad on these bikes to gum up.I usually clean mine while engine out.

      LOL!! Yeah, I noticed that later on and had to go back in a do the starter clutch. It's video #63 in this series. It's a great tip - and one I wish I had known when putting in the stator. Thanks!!

      @@HooptieDoodle Yea I watched your video of course too late.But will help fellow wrenchers.Also they need to do alot of cleaning and checking while the engine is out.Clean the oil screen.Im doing the hydraulic clutch mod.These old hands hurt at times.Im building another going crazy on it car coil.altenator carb.

      Yeah, like episode #3 or #4, I broke down the first Goldwing engine. This is engine #2. That thing people say about never buy a bike that doesn't run - they're right! 😂😭

      @@HooptieDoodle question.... I've been watching all your videos and thank you for making them. Just curious. Is the stator cable suppose to be infront of the stator? I did mine exactly how you have it but I'm thinking it may not allow the stator to slide in correctly. Is it suppose to be wedge between the stator and crank case cover , instead?

      @@67lnr80 at 9:50 in the video that stator is in wrong, with the cables coming out in front. It should be flipped so that they go out back towards the housing. I made a mistake ☹

      @@HooptieDoodle ok awesome. I flipped mine. Seemed like there was a lot of slack towards the plug end that has the C clip. I pulled some slack outto minimize the excess between the stator and the crankcase cover. You think it will leak? Seems like it was sealed but then I pulled the cables thru a bit. Not sure if I should silicone it. Seems like it would be fine.
